I highly recommend this series by Berklee's Richard Davis. He was my teacher when I was at Berklee and apparently did a good job teaching me because I ended up scoring The Grudge 3 (produced by Spider-Man director, Sam Raimi) and orchestrating 27 features like Spider-Man 3, Fantastic Four 2, and Ghost Rider. For a crash course in film scoring that doesn't require you to back to college and spend 4 years there, or spend a lot of money visit

I have wrote some pieces and many told me they are suitable for films and movie scoring. You are welcome to check them. I also would like to hear from people about recommended institutions for film composion / animation composing.
That's interesting. I'm here, because I'm writing a movie and one of the characters' parents try to force her into a carreer she doesn't want to persue, lol. I wish you the best.

i always wondered what the preference was when it came to choosing potential creators. Is it educational background or who knows who or what is the process preference? I know it's true with any position the process maybe be the same I think it's a little different when it comes to the arts, thou. When you don't have big names as contracts to drop or big projects you can mention. That was an interesting observation I made from some of the information that was mentioned here.
Just look at the stuff Elfman has done since he began scoring movies in the late 80's: Main theme from The Simpsons " " " Tales from the Crypt Darkman Army of Darkness Batman Batman Returns A Simple Plan Charlotte's Web Meet the Robinsons Beetlejuice the Spider-Man trilogy This guy is amazing!!
Land of Entrapment...lol nice one. Music is such an important part of movies and I never really thought about the time that goes into matching music with a movie perfectly.
I'm so glad the only films I care to score for are my own YT junk. What a disaster: the odds of "making it" are close to winning Lotto. ... I agree: don't spend credit card money on this venture. ... Interesting talk.
I think the Scoring sessions are the most interesting process of Filmmaking besides the editing and vfx. I have a collection of scores and even complete scores. I'm hoping to become a Director, Writer, Producer and Film Editor. This video is very cool.
Hey I'm an aspiring film composer and I was wondering if you all would check out my channel and give me your opinions on my music. I'd really appreciate it.
@Rejekt313 i think you have talent man but the sounds you are using are horrible and it takes you right out of the music. I tried to look past the sounds and just listen to your composition, in that case it is good.
What kind of self-absorbed person opens a door into a room where you have a lecture going on, with cameras and sound and light equipment and all and simply turns around after realizing it's the wrong room and don't bother to close the door?
Geez, look away from your belly-button for a while girl!
*laughing*..it's so funny that I read your post about the door not being closed right before it happened..*LOL* I was trying to figure out why your post said that and then it happened..*LOL*
I hope to get my music in to films one day and would love to eventually be hired to score an entire movie or to be a music supervisor and decide which songs were placed in movies.
Lack of musical composition and anything beyond extremely basic piano knowledge really hinders my short films..sure hope I can get someone to score some for me someday (Even if it's w/ soundfonts in fruityloops..)-but till then I'll keep up the struggle of attempting it myself. ;-)
how long have you been doing music/editing? this is very insightful. good work! I'm interested in scoring for movies and tv as well...just wanting to get my product out there. do you have any suggestions?
Richard Davis has been doing this for a long time... I'm just the guy who did the video. But I'd suggest doing some free work on some short films to gain experience and going to a school that teaches film scoring would be good too.
Who is that stupid girl at 3:46 who just opens that door, and then walks away, leaving it open? How rude can get? I'm glad that Richard Davis was able to block it out and keep talking, because I probably would have been too distracted. Oh, and thank you for posting these!
Well i'd love to do sweeping scores of the likes of Horner and Williams... but obviously that is the SMALLEST part of a film scorers job, but i definitely prefer a traditional orchestra sound to more modern soundtracks, do you compose at all?
I do a lot of movie editing so I work with other people's music and adapting it to the movie. I love working with all types of music and select it based on the story/plot/mood
So true... people forget how important music is to a movie. Some people say that when you get the "chills" in a movie, it is because of the sounds they hear, not what they see.

btw- I agree with zenmachineflims comment regarding Richard's "out of the box" approach. Stay inspired.
I'm a composer and have taught music, and basic film scoring. Richard's book and teaching is the one source I teach from more than any other.
What I like so much about his teaching is that he gives enough room to be creative, and doesn't teach musicians to be stuck in a box, or held to strict foundations of process. Just as an example, he embraces different styles, electronics, unique voices and instruments, instead of just assuming that all scoring must be from a symphony orchestra.
this is really good! I literally finished reading his book about an hour ago, and came on youtube and happened to stumble upon this video not knowing that he was in it!
Anyway, it's one hell of a good book, the 'Complete Guide to Film Scoring' and I'd recommend it without hesitation to anybody interested in the music to film industry
Thx for this video! Great work Mr. Davis!
