Wonderful arrangement, fabulous performance. How sad that the poster of this thought it appropriate to use profanity in the description of a Christian hymn. Perhaps you should rethink that. Seriously, if Christ were standing right next to you, would you have the gall to use that phrase?
Sounds just like "Eva Cassidy's version" to me. I would love to hear Alexa sing "Somewhere over the Rainbow"......Eva's version. She sounds so much like Eva.....AWESOME!
WOW Alexa! 1st time I watched and heard your ensemble I got goose bumps on my arms. The second time I got goose bumps all over. I called my husband in to watch and hear you. I watched as the hair on his arms and legs raised with goose bumps too! Neither of us has ever had that happen before! Absolutely incredible! Thank you! Beautiful Song, Beautiful Voice, Beautiful Ensemble!
Vocal is a strong tradition at Seattle Academy of Arts & Sciences (SAAS) in Seattle, Washington, an independent school for 6th - 12th grade and Alexa is yet another shining star from the school.
This is very interesting to me. I sang this song in high school. We had a completely different approch on how we sang it. We did it much slower. If I wasn't listening to the words I would have thought it was a different song. I really like it though. You guys did a good job. And the lead girl has a very powerful voice.
These comments on race are so stupid.... Anyone can sing or play any type of music with passion and soul no matter what color they are. look at maynard ferguson, steve cropper, glenn miller etc. these are all very talented influential white musicians that are in genres of music that are heavily dominated by african americans. Let's listen to the song and the emotion and the soul, rather than the color of the singers skin.
Hey, there's a black girl in the back row! She's great, but I agree that there should be a little bit more of the back-up singers, maybe without the recorded track.
Alexa sings this song beautifully. The arrangement is great regardless of the race of the singers. In regards to those of you passing judgement on whether it is performed correctly, perhaps you should familiarize yourself with the concept of artistic license. Keep it up Alexa!
I don't like this version at all. She has a great voice for gospel music, but the arrangement of the song doesn't work. This needs to have a black group for back up and needs to incorporate the background singers a lot more.
this isn't how the song is supposed to be sang. i love her voice but she kinda ruined the song. no offense but i want to hear someone sing the original way to sing it.
There is no one waya song is "supposed to be" sung. The beauty of music is the ability to rearrange for different occasions, styles, times and talents, and what a better song to interpret than this ageless praise of God, "since Love is Lord of heaven and earth?" This is an awesome gospel style version. But, like you, I really would like to hear a traditional version of this song that is well recorded.
Well... Yes there is. If it was an African Piece and a bunch of Americans sang it in a Country Twan it would destroy its original tone. Also destroy its cultural qualities, that made it unique in the first place. I'm sure its the same way with this, but I haven't heard the original. I'd like to very much here the original people sing it, so I can truely understand its meaning.
I understand what you're saying and actually I don't know the origins of the song. I just assumed that it was a country-type gospel song. I do love this version.
Eva turned this hymn, unsually sung as a dreary dirge, into something joyous, in keeping with Psalm 100:
Psalm 100: A Psalm of Thanksgiving. 1 Make a joyful shout to the LORD, all you lands! 2 Serve the LORD with gladness; Come before His presence with singing. . . .
This is the Eva Cassidy version-she did with black choir before she died-email I'll send it!Personally my Favorite version-I love it when songs get a new twist-why does it have to be only one way. There really is no such thing as " This is NOT how the song is SUPPOSED to be done"! Otherwise why did Eva's version of Sting's -Field's of Gold become so popular & #1 hit. I am a 60 yr old white grama who thinks that change & difference is great-so c'mon you'kids'-get with it! PS-It's sung-not sang
okay she has an amazing jazz voice, BUT THIS IS NOT HOW THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE SANG! again great voice, but definetly not how this song is definetly not being sang right.
Great song, I'm interesting in making videos of new and old religions, in my area we have The River Dream Church based in Queen Street it is a Penticostal Church, run by pastors Michael and Marion, is it safe to take my camaracorder inside the church and film clips and put it on youtube as a outsider of this Church, or would I get told off by people standing beside the door for filming the sunday service ?.
@richardbeale To be safe, you'd probably best ask permission ahead of time. Pentecostals treat worship as a sacred act of praise to God -- and they would definitely be offended by your calling it a video of a "religion". Not dead religion, but a living relationship with Christ the Lord!
I have seen many choir performances of this song. I am about to perform it with my choir, but, I wish THIS was the arrangement we would be performing. THIS truly speaks the heart of the song. And DAMN that girl's got PIPES!
You ought to send this clip to Eva Cassidy's record company, Blix Street Records, which is close to you in Gig Harbor, Wash. I bet they'd be really impressed. Excellent cover of Eva's version. Powerful voice.
These kids sing their asses off! Awesome!
