If someone really is actively connecting to your computer and 'hacking' you, the IP will be useless to you unless you plan to take legal action. If they know how to do such a thing and you have to ask, you're too far behind the curve to 'win' in such a fight.
An antivirus detects and can stop malicious software from being run on your computer - if you use it right. If you are sure that file is Anna Kournikova and click the 'go away' on the AV, its not going to help.

Unless of course they use webmail, in which case the IP will be that of the webmail provider. I don't think you'd want to report Yahoo or Google to the DEA.

Just a general curiosity here, but... How is it that some people are able to produce both physical address and phone number of ip's? I dont know if they can find this info from ALL searches performed, but I have seen it done, and it is a bit disconcerning. Chances are what you've seen is someone finding the contact information for either the domain the IP belongs to or for the ISP that issued the IP. The contact name is normally that of a real person at the ISP (employee) or of the owner of the domain, or employee of the company that owns the domain.

The one doing the trace, was actually... somehow, I have no idea how... able to collect the targets Actual physical address and tel. number. I'm familliar with the material you demonstrated in your video, and they managed to get a few steps beyond that. And it baffles me as to how they did it?
Hint: When the site couldn't figure out where my IP was assigned, it returned a location of 0° by 0°, which is off the coast of Africa. Of course, if you don't recognize the continent of Africa on a map, you probably don't understand Cartesian coordinates either.

That just depends on if your IM session is using a direct connection for text or if you are using voice or webcam (which always use direct connection). A quick netstat -an will show all connections, and you'd just look up the IPs listed as connecting via port 5050, the normal port for Yahoo Messenger. This is no magic bullet you can use to 'hack' someone, nor as noted in the video will you know exactly where they are - but it'll be close enough to know in many cases if you are being lied to.
If you have to come on here and ask, chances are you can't. Also likely is that you'd be caught, and of course it's just a wee bit of a felony in most places to commit computer intrusion, and a felony to solicit help in committing a felony.

I don't use either of those services, so I have no idea how they connect to you or others. If you think that you might be connecting directly to the other users of those services, netstat will show you their IP. I have a video called Windows Security: Find Your Open Ports that explains a bit about using netstat.

Chances are your account wasn't 'hacked' in a proper sense, and nothing on your end can be done to protect your YouTube profile on the YouTube servers from being compromised if could be (or is) being exploited. What's more likely is that you are being exploited, either by a phishing attack or by using a password that's too obvious in light of information readily available about you.
good point, but I have been using strong passwords for my profile already, as you know, with the right scripts any system can be hacked into no matter how tight the security is, and yes, I could've been exploited somehow, but its unlikely as I don't let anyone fool me into anything.
If you mean YouTube messages via it's own internal messaing service, that would show YouTube's IP. If you mean the email notifications of YouTube messages, same deal. Unless there's some way YouTube carelessly passes along the originating IP information from the original sender in their messages, no packet sniffer is going to show you their IP. It would also be of no use for capturing passwords others are sending across the internet, only on your local network (like your family).
guys ips arent like dna codes or anything. they are more like taxis your computer gets in because you always use different ones everytime you connect your router to the internet. If you want to find a certain computer you have to know the mac address which still doesnt tell you where in the world it is just that it is online or offline.
If their website was hacked, you should be asking for the assistance of the web hosting company, because they were also victims of the crime. They also have the information and tools to pursue the problem.

You Can Trace Any body's IP But Get A Location As General As Let's Say Chicago Illinois. But If It's Something To Say A You Want A Certain Location. You Will Have To Contact The ISP. I think you missed the point of the video. You can't just use someone's IP to find where they live. If your XBox and Wii were stolen and the thief is using your XBox Live account, you need to notify XBox live. The same is true if they are using your WiiConnect credentials. If that's not what they are doing, how do you know they've gone online with your consoles?
The YouTube profile is all content from the YouTube servers with the one possible exception of remotely hosted profile background images, so nothing in the profile itself would disclose the YouTube user's IP unless they hosted an image directly from their computer - which is so unlikely for almost all users.
I don't know off hand, but you should be more concerned about posting too personal of information on your profile, or disclosing it in your videos, descriptions, comments, and tags. Things like house numbers (even your neighbor's), street signs, or store names can give away your location far too easily.
A company can't do it just by you connecting to their servers and thus showing them your IP address. The only way a company, just like an individual, could find your real identity from your IP is to request that information from your ISP or actually hack into their systems and manage to find their server logs and other records and reference that information. The former usually requires either a legal action or evidence that it might be warranted, the latter is extremely unlikely.

To the every server you connect to on the internet, you are just an IP address, Mac, Windows, Linux, or other OS. You can't really 'hide' the address from anything you connect to, or you wouldn't be able to connect. It's that simple really. If you 'hide' your IP, you hide the ability to connect.
So what's your opinion on social networking sites then? You can use crude, non technical methods on there to steal people's identities using the electoral role if they are ignorant enough to put detailed stuff (maiden names etc) on there with low security settings. Aside from the finantial fraud aspect, it could be pretty dangerous.
That is clearly a more serious problem. When compared to people's concerns about someone obtaining their IP address, it should take precedence, but the opposite is usually true. Most people don't understand that half of real hacking is social engineering, the human part of the equation. Technical hacking is almost useless without human intuition and information for leads.

Some forums display your IP address by design, and in almost all forum software the moderators and/or administrators can see the IP of the person posting. There could be an exploit of the forum software to disclose this as well. If they have a friend in the mod or admin ranks, they could also get it that way. However, the point is that it's not really such a serious threat - worry when they can tell you personal information you never gave via the forum in any fashion.
Just so you all know, this was all very good. The reason however that it said he lived in Africa (or at least off the coast) is because the map couldn't find the location of the address. That place it pointed to was at the 0 coordinate on the map for both lattitude and longitude which I recognised.
I must admit, I'm surprised he didn't mention the machine couldn't find any IP at all, rather than think the machine actually beliefs he is in Africa or something...
Perhaps you didn't note what I said right before that, when I mentioned the information might not be available or be totally incorrect. Where do you figure the default location is when none is given?
(Of course it should be obvious when you know that computers start counting at zero. ;-) )

Some places a wide port scan without a requested connection is now conditionally considered illegal, basically dependent on circumstances and any subsequent acts. Port scanning random systems or in an unsolicited manner is considered unethical at very least. Port scanning methods can be used by something like a P2P application to attempt to make a connection, but just because both parties are running the same application thus giving consent to such functions is it ethical or basically legal.
I made the video in response to one someone had posted here that was getting a LOT of views - and it was quite misleading. The original author "kipkay" makes very polished videos, most with good information. More about the video I responded to is in the description.

YouTube's system doesn't disclose the IP of a user through it's normal interface (the web site itself).
If her harassment is really that severe, you should be contacting law enforcement.

Just a general curiosity here, but... How is it that some people are able to produce both physical address and phone number of ip's? I dont know if they can find this info from ALL searches performed, but I have seen it done, and it is a bit disconcerning. Which means it would suggest that it is possible, at least in some instances. Any idea what I mean?

Chances are what you've seen is someone finding the contact information for either the domain the IP belongs to or for the ISP that issued the IP. The contact name is normally that of a real person at the ISP (employee) or of the owner of the domain, or employee of the company that owns the domain.

I understand what you mean with respect to what you just mentioned... But that wasn't the case. The one doing the trace, was actually... somehow, I have no idea how... able to collect the targets Actual physical address and tel. number. I'm familliar with the material you demonstrated in your video, and they managed to get a few steps beyond that. And it baffles me as to how they did it?

every computer that got intenet connection got an IP address and there cant be 2 computers around the world with the same IP
But IP is also dangerous if anybody knew ur ip they could hack ur comp and mess it up

Hint: When the site couldn't figure out where my IP was assigned, it returned a location of 0° by 0°, which is off the coast of Africa. Of course, if you don't recognize the continent of Africa on a map, you probably don't understand Cartesian coordinates either.

That just depends on if your IM session is using a direct connection for text or if you are using voice or webcam (which always use direct connection). A quick netstat -an will show all connections, and you'd just look up the IPs listed as connecting via port 5050, the normal port for Yahoo Messenger. This is no magic bullet you can use to 'hack' someone, nor as noted in the video will you know exactly where they are - but it'll be close enough to know in many cases if you are being lied to.

Hmm, I guess I didn't add that to my description. It's internicDOTnetSLASHwhoisDOThtml. That tells you some info, but to get the detailed info you need to see the hosting listed and search their whois.

I don't use either of those services, so I have no idea how they connect to you or others. If you think that you might be connecting directly to the other users of those services, netstat will show you their IP. I have a video called Windows Security: Find Your Open Ports that explains a bit about using netstat.

Chances are your account wasn't 'hacked' in a proper sense, and nothing on your end can be done to protect your YouTube profile on the YouTube servers from being compromised if could be (or is) being exploited. What's more likely is that you are being exploited, either by a phishing attack or by using a password that's too obvious in light of information readily available about you.

good point, but I have been using strong passwords for my profile already, as you know, with the right scripts any system can be hacked into no matter how tight the security is, and yes, I could've been exploited somehow, but its unlikely as I don't let anyone fool me into anything.

If you mean YouTube messages via it's own internal messaing service, that would show YouTube's IP. If you mean the email notifications of YouTube messages, same deal. Unless there's some way YouTube carelessly passes along the originating IP information from the original sender in their messages, no packet sniffer is going to show you their IP. It would also be of no use for capturing passwords others are sending across the internet, only on your local network (like your family).

guys ips arent like dna codes or anything. they are more like taxis your computer gets in because you always use different ones everytime you connect your router to the internet. If you want to find a certain computer you have to know the mac address which still doesnt tell you where in the world it is just that it is online or offline.

You Can Trace Any body's IP But Get A Location As General As Let's Say Chicago Illinois. But If It's Something To Say A You Want A Certain Location. You Will Have To Contact The ISP. Give A Reason Why You Want There Address And Info. It Has To Be Good Too. Now By This I Am Not Encouraging Just Make Up Lies. This Is For Serious Stuff Like They Owe You Money From An Online Package. I think you missed the point of the video. You can't just use someone's IP to find where they live. If your XBox and Wii were stolen and the thief is using your XBox Live account, you need to notify XBox live. The same is true if they are using your WiiConnect credentials. If that's not what they are doing, how do you know they've gone online with your consoles?

The YouTube profile is all content from the YouTube servers with the one possible exception of remotely hosted profile background images, so nothing in the profile itself would disclose the YouTube user's IP unless they hosted an image directly from their computer - which is so unlikely for almost all users.

I don't know off hand, but you should be more concerned about posting too personal of information on your profile, or disclosing it in your videos, descriptions, comments, and tags. Things like house numbers (even your neighbor's), street signs, or store names can give away your location far too easily.

A company can't do it just by you connecting to their servers and thus showing them your IP address. The only way a company, just like an individual, could find your real identity from your IP is to request that information from your ISP or actually hack into their systems and manage to find their server logs and other records and reference that information. The former usually requires either a legal action or evidence that it might be warranted, the latter is extremely unlikely.

To the every server you connect to on the internet, you are just an IP address, Mac, Windows, Linux, or other OS. You can't really 'hide' the address from anything you connect to, or you wouldn't be able to connect. It's that simple really. If you 'hide' your IP, you hide the ability to connect.

So what's your opinion on social networking sites then? You can use crude, non technical methods on there to steal people's identities using the electoral role if they are ignorant enough to put detailed stuff (maiden names etc) on there with low security settings. Aside from the finantial fraud aspect, it could be pretty dangerous.

That is clearly a more serious problem. When compared to people's concerns about someone obtaining their IP address, it should take precedence, but the opposite is usually true. Most people don't understand that half of real hacking is social engineering, the human part of the equation. Technical hacking is almost useless without human intuition and information for leads.

Some forums display your IP address by design, and in almost all forum software the moderators and/or administrators can see the IP of the person posting. There could be an exploit of the forum software to disclose this as well. If they have a friend in the mod or admin ranks, they could also get it that way. However, the point is that it's not really such a serious threat - worry when they can tell you personal information you never gave via the forum in any fashion.

Just so you all know, this was all very good. The reason however that it said he lived in Africa (or at least off the coast) is because the map couldn't find the location of the address. That place it pointed to was at the 0 coordinate on the map for both lattitude and longitude which I recognised.
I must admit, I'm surprised he didn't mention the machine couldn't find any IP at all, rather than think the machine actually beliefs he is in Africa or something...

Some places a wide port scan without a requested connection is now conditionally considered illegal, basically dependent on circumstances and any subsequent acts. Port scanning random systems or in an unsolicited manner is considered unethical at very least. Port scanning methods can be used by something like a P2P application to attempt to make a connection, but just because both parties are running the same application thus giving consent to such functions is it ethical or basically legal.
