  • I Love Her. She had amazingly beautiful voice!!!! That voice is a National Treasure. imagine what she could have done had she lived. Goodbye to Love is Karen at her best!!! This was Richard and John Bettis at their songwriting best.Tony Peluso guitar power ballad solo, it was like the first power ballad ever.

  • This is a "questionable" video. =p

  • This video is a favorite on Ottawa

  • Music is so powerfull. She was a real Pro.

  • This is by far the best live performance I've ever seen by Karen. I have watched her perfrom these songs in a number of clips on YouTube and her voice is at it's peak, here (it is even stronger w/so much more resonance than the appearances from 10 years earlier.) What happened??? She seems so confident in this clip from the Tonight Show. Richard's dumb drug addiction held her back. I think he was jealous of her and that's why she never went farther w/her solo album . . .

  • I don't think anyone can ever get enough of Karen and the Carpenters in general. Miss hearing that perfect pitch and tone.

    R.I.P Karen oo

  • awesome!!! nice to see both Richard and Karen look healthy and happy. if either were ill at thebtime, they didnt show it. refreshing to see past the pills and eating disorder and enjoy what they loved to do!!! i enjoyed this immencely!!!

  • Karen is amazing and so is that drummer at the end! I would love to see Karen do that.

  • this is gorgeous, beyond anything I can formulate into words about it

  • beste stem ooit! er is niemand die zo de stem van een engel benaderd.....

  • the beautiful die too young.....

  • pitch perfect every time. now i know why people can never tell if she's lip-synching to a recording sometimes. her voice was perfectly clear in every recording. and she was so sweet and goofy with her little dance at the end! i really wish i was born early enough to get to see them at the height of their success. RIP Karen

  • hi:)

  • Perfect. Simply perfect. Live, in the studio - doesn't matter. It's 2011 and I am yet to hear a singer as true and real as that of Karen Carpenter.

  • Karen was a perfect perfect singer.

  • tabadababoum bling bling bamtabadambam ....ouiiiiii.(Karen )...blam boum ....bang ....ah the drumer !

  • She looks pretty good here.

What Karen needed was a doctor like Dr Nick to watch out for her and guide her.

  • Here you see how Karen and Richard are incorporating the beginning of the heavy metal age. Karen, a drummer, loves it!! You hear it in all of their recordings. Skilled musicians able to modulate and pave the way for more great music. Not only are they great musicians, but the also appreciate great musicians and great music. Had Karen been able to beat anorexia nervosa, I believe we would have even more diverse and sophisticated pop music today. Really miss The Carpenters!!

  • ac/dc called they want their drummer back!!

  • very beautiful voice...

  • sigh....

  • Fantastic!!!!

  • THE BEST VOICE EVER CREATED BY GOD , AN ANGEL´S VOICE, IS KAREN´S VOICE.

HUMAN LOVE DID NOT PAYED YOU WELL WHAT YOU DESERVED IN THIS LIFE.

KAREN, YOU AWAKED LOVE IN OUR HEARTS AND OUR SOULS, I WILL LOVE YOU FOREVER.

I WILL MEET YOU IN HEAVEN, FOR SURE.

  • I think it's very cool that the drums rock at the end. That is what Karen wanted!!!!!!!!! Good job Cubby!

  • Karen really showing her vocal and performance skills here--like it

  • @wastemytime77

unfortunately she was also showing clears signs of her disease:(

  • @flatswing she looks so frail and weak.

  • Karen Carpenter has no equal.

  • With each day that goes by, now going on 10 months, I'm still sickened by the fact that Karen's friends Carol, Debbie & Frank actually "ALLOWED" Randy Schmidt to bring both himself & his book to East Haven & even worse Nathan Hale Elementary School. I Love & Respect all three of you & I'm really glad that the most precious & private things about Karen Randy will NEVER have to know. The post reaction that Mr. Schmidt was there was Not well received by East Haven. Still isen't!

  • @vmuto1 GIRL, YOU IS TRIPPIN

  • Unusually she was naturally a Contralto but she used to sing in a usual mezzo soprano voice until, almost by accident, Richard changed the key to a lower pitch in a studio session and out came THAT voice ...!

  • No-one ever did an 'ahhhhhhh' quite like Karen :)

  • Cubby on the drum kit!!!!!

  • I didn't think it was really Karen as she is so thin, fantastic voice though !!!!

  • AMAZING

in the chorus with Richard Carpenter ...the blond with glasses, is Gerry Beckley ( one of vocals from the band: AMERICA ) ??

  • @odannon No, it's not Gerry...someone who looks a lot like him, though.

  • I like how Karen sings along to the guitar solo in "Goodbye to Love." :-)

  • Yes,no one can replace them from my heart.

  • Modern situation you'd see the drums behind plexiglass, be able to dial up or down the balance at the control board.

  • When I close my eyes, I can feel the power of her incredible voice, but it's just so sad to see her so fragile and thin in that video.

  • She was herself drummer anytime better than anyone playing in particular song.

  • Drummer is not over-playing. The acoustics/miking of drums was very very poor. Cubby O'Brian is a world class studio and live drummer par none. I speak as a professional studio drummer.

  • gosto muito,toca em meu coraçao.muito bom.

  • A lot of people didn't know Karen could hit the high notes too. We are so much in love with her rich low register that we sometimes overlook her high register. But Karen had a full vocal range that many people weren't aware of. Songs like "Love is Surrender", "Want You Back (In My Life)", and "Making Love in the Afternoon" attest to her skills with the high notes.

  • Karen Carpenter and Julie Andrews are the two best singers who ever lived! and they also my two faves, they both have clear voices and magic in their voices that take you to another world! I would have loved to have seen Julie Andrews and Karen sing together, it would have been amazing!

  • @maleficentdiva I was thinking that too! Imagine if Julie Andrews (the world's most pitch-perfect, crystal-clear soprano) had sung the "Stille Nacht" duet with Karen Carpenter (the world's most pitch-perfect, crystal-clear contralto) on "The Carpenters: Christmas Portrait".... I think the heavens would've split due to the sheer beauty of it.

  • please take a listen on my cover ofYESTERDAY ONCE MORE... thanks

  • where's' it gone the love the true emotions the innocents!!!

  • This is what an angel sounds like.

  • Who is Bassist?

    Very nice Sound.

  • @negundokaede Bob Messenger- he played flute, sax, wind, woodwinds and reeds for them as well

  • listen to the way her voice crackles on the word "by" in "goodbye to love" at about 2:59. i love when it does that. she sounds so tender and vulnerable.

  • Comment removed

  • There will never be another like her. What a voice. Soothing.

  • I am sorry all: As I have said previously I love Karen like I love the sun, but this is a pre-recorded performance meant for live TV. She recored this in front of the studio audience,

off air and this was segued into the live cut. She always strived for perfection!

Karen we still love you just as you were

  • THAT was Music! And Karen was one of the greatest Singers EVER! Such a great Voice...I love it

  • Caren is the best even today

  • What I find most interesting in the older clips is how the singers dressed. There were no "pants on the ground", boxers showing, torn t-shirts, ripped jeans, unkept hair. Look at Richard, on stage with a tie on. That was enteretainment. You did not see male rock stars on the stage simulating sex while singing. It was a good time then.

  • why didn't they let Karen do the drum solo at the end?

  • @taberkuku Cubby O'Brien was a great drummer (and one of the original Mouseketeers), and they decided they wanted Karen up front singing. She was up front most of the time after 1971.

  • I think it's arguably a pity that the Carpenters ruled out rock music, however their live version of Goodbye to Love from 1976 suggests they could rock things up aweinspiringly when they chose - beats anything on Elvis' live albums and it does so without mentioning the Lord, something that really annoys me about Elvis' records: you think he's singing to you almost, or at least for you, well it seems like that, and then he blows it all by invoking the Lord Jesus Christ.lol

  • @paulgarrard501 I agree- I love the Carpenters, but wish they had explored different styles too (Karen tried to do so with her unreleased solo album). Karen could really belt it, too (listen to her solo of "And When I Die" with her college choir on YouTube). And of course, she was a kick-ass drummer too.

  • She has an awesome voice!!

  • What a voice. You can see how thin she is here. It's so sad. She was one of the best singers ever.

  • RIP Tony Peluso.... Gone too soon.

  • I love the carpenters ,karen's voice is unique and distinctive! Great talent!!!!thanks for uploading!

  • nice song 4 me

  • What I like about this voice is how she finds pleasure in singing a straight tune without all the yodelling a vocal acrobatics that goes on these days.

  • About a year after the death of Judy Garland - Karen appeared and there were striking similarities in the way the 2 great ladies had a special magic

  • @Rouben19 i often wish judy and karen had met. i think judy would have thought karen had one hell of a beautiful voice.

  • beautifulllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll

  • If I could just bottle up the sheer magic she exuberates here so utterly Perfect. I'd treasure it for a lifetime!

I have never felt so much joy and sorrow for someone that I have for Karen Carpenter. her tragedy, her angelic voice and profoundly humble nature along with beauty lives on still to this day, I wish with all my heart that I was alive in this era. such an Amazing Woman. Simply Amazing.

"Goodbye dear Karen. May your wings flit again someday. you truly were an angel in disguise" RIP

  • 80 pounds and dieing and she could still pull off a performance like this. There will never be another Karen Carpenter.

  • It's official the drummer was a machine, that is sickening the way he played those drums! I would love to see that today! I love the little dance Kare did at the end.

  • Better than Streisand- better than Celine. To this day, no one can touch the phonetic quality of her voice. A treasure of the Rock era.- God bless The Carpenters.

  • @rickw1100 she reminds me so much of Celine

  • @parachuteboi -SO BEAUTIFUL!

  • @rickw1100 Amen!

  • @rickw1100 - Nah - Keely Smith could do it -

Feddie Mercury had a vocal range and range of styles she could only dream of - and he wrote his own - that said I do really like her style - its just very narrow - like eating couscous - yummy but after a few mouthfulls ya need some sauce. :-)

  • @ginganz13 -How ARE things at the Helen Keller Institute?

  • @rickw1100 Don't know - never been - why do you ask?

  • @rickw1100

    I agree 100% with you!!!

    RossouwR

  • @rickw1100 amen....imo karen has the *most special* voice in the universe.

  • @rickw1100 Totally agree! Karen's voice had a special, unique richness to it. Very unusual and appealing. It's a voice that made you want to listen. Streisand manipulated her voice well and had a bell-like quality to it, but to me it's not "all around appealing", sounding rather "honky". Celine screeches her voice and bellows out loudly. What made Karen's voice different was its smoothness, the rich low notes alternating with the clear high notes that were characteristic of her voice.

  • @rickw1100 Simply the best.

  • @rickw1100 where are you come rom? :)

  • @damnation020109 ...a place that appreciates great music.

  • drummer is overplaying..easy on the cymbals cowboy..

  • @flippyflyer BETTER DRUMMER : THE ONE AND ONLY KAREN CARPENTER !!

  • @elgorguz51 agreed!!!

  • @flippyflyer Really! He's trying to play like Neal Peart. Not cool in Carpenters songs...not cool at all.

  • @oliasdoug lol....good call!

  • So sad Karen. You can see it in her eyes. It was killing her then. In our hearts forever. <3

  • So sad, robotic & finally stylish. As if they were already dead. I miss you, Karen!

  • I know it would have been a waste to have her host a show like, say "Romper Room", but the way she called out those names of the band members after the medoly, she would've held my attention calling out the names of children watching the show on TV through her "magic mirror". But then, Miss Fran (?) would never call my name.

So my dream come true would be to have Miss Karen call out "And I see you, Steven!" at the end of an episode of "Romper Room". I think I would faint. :-D

  • Karen's battle with anorexia was obviously evident. But she had grown as a performer and seems much more comfortable on-stage than in her previous Tonight Show appearances.

And that glorious voice! Truly, Karen remains one of the best pop singers of all-time,

  • @ste3021878 i didnt know she was this outgoing!

  • The drummer should audition for The Muppets.

  • that was simply awesome!!!! what a talent they had and continue to have on the world today. I love their music and miss Karen a lot but at least we have their wonderful music to listen to. Thank you for posting this rarity!! The Carpenters....simply wonderful!!!

  • I get goosepimples every time I listen to the carpenters, best singer ever.

  • Wow, the most beautiful female voice of all time, I love it!

  • ...essa é a maior cantora de todos os tempos, no meu conceito...ao lado do maior showman de todos os tempos, Elvis Presley...

  • Karen looked like she was enjoying herself. Thank YOU for the music, Ms. Carpenter!!!

  • This is the same three songs they did in the medley they did in 1973 with Johnny.

  • Johnny got a wonderful concert this night!

  • That was so CUTE at the end when she went "....And Doug and Bob and Bone and Danny! ...and us" LOL!! Her modesty is very appealing :) And RIP to Tony Peluso! I hope he's wailing away on the big guitar in the sky while Karen sings along.

  • great solo from Peluzo. he just die week ago RIP Tony Peluso

  • @antonio021481 !!!!

  • Why didn't anyone help her.

  • @cunnidvd They didn't know at the time that anorexia was psychological most people had never even heard the term before Karen died of it.

  • I didn't think she became this thin until the 80's.

  • :( RIP Karen x

  • i agree with you mrpage1974 carpenters is such a very very nice and gorgeous voice

  • hello mr page1974 i agree with you carpenters is such a great great voice . . . .

  • georgeous....! performance... : )

  • Thanks for this experience. Amazing! :-) RIP Karen. You are missed girl!!

  • this is live right? amazing!

  • What a drum solo! that rocks my world! I see it rocked Karen's, too! And wow.. the bulge on the background vocalist! He's packin a lunch big enough for two!

  • Is that Cubby from the Mickey Mouse club on drums?

  • i was 9 years old when i hear her voice , since then, i never stop listen her music,

i had a cd collections of the carpenters,i never tired her music now ,iam 50, still

listening, i can call karen my only truly one and only superstar.

  • LOL@ John Davidson being the guest host that night. Johnny missed out!

  • Just sensational :) :) :) RIP Karen x

  • The carpenters need placed into the rock and roll hall of fame!

  • all i can say marvelous

  • The 70's at their very best! We miss you Karen!

  • they should of let girl just stay on the drums--you see how happy she was after that drum solo--especially at 5:56

  • they should of let girl just stay on the drums--you see how happy she was after that drum solo--especially at 5:56

  • @turquoise770 of course she should have sung as well while drumming--which she was well able as everyone knows--but making her get out front which she did not want to do, was her demise

  • It is hard to believe she has been gone for 27 YEARS! She is singing in heavens choir! I am so grateful for recordings that allow us to still hear her heavenly voice!

  • Well GapJustin, I agree she was incredible but we do have a good voices out there now, like Christina

  • @impassable voices like christina arent pure. elton once told her to pick a note n sing it.. karen SUNG every note she touched. there is no voice today out there that can match hers.

  • @impassable Are you kidding me ??? The only thing that Christina Aguilera is good at is vocal acrobatics...Everytime I hear her sing is sounds so soul-less and her electronic voice enhancements in the studio....She is not a bad singer, just not up to the level of Karen.

  • Wowee... at 3:08 her spirit shines through. She's deeply feeling what she's singing. Put a lump in my throat.

  • Stumbled upon a video of her singing Rainy Days... a couple of weeks ago. I was born the same year as her. In my 20's always thought she had a beautiful voice but she just wasn't cool enough like the hippy screamers at the time. But now her voice haunts me. I am humming the melodies constantly. The best female vocalist in my lifetime. Unforgettable! This vid does display her in the weight spiral down. Too sad. KC you were a beautiful woman.

  • I just can't believe all y'all that comment on how this "wasn't her best performance". So what? She had one of the most hauntingly beautiful voices ever! Her...Mama Cass...c'mon, people...you don't find this type of talent in todays music industry. It's all been altered. Nobody has the true talent that women like Karen and Cass did. Show some damn respect.

  • I felt like punching that gutarist in the mouth and smashing his teeth into a curb when he did his solo , he looks like a little shit hole lol

  • The brilliant drummer in this, is CUBBY O'BRIEN----the little boy in The Mickey Mouse Club, from the 1950s

     Baby boomers will remember him.

  • @todbeck Cubby was awesome.

  • Pure magic...

  • Not her best performance. I don't think this version does her justice. But either way, she has one of the best, and loveliest female voice in modern music.

  • I grew up right next to Karen in California, Today I go in for my 16th Surgery. I always come here before I go into the Hospital for the Strength I can only get from my Friends music . Today is her 60th Birthday and my 46th.....Here is hoping for a 47th for me and an eternity for Karen. Hey if things don't go well today I just might be seeing her again later today.....Ill be sure to put tell her that everyone here still loves what she did ...:)

  • I hope you do well...did well...and if, by chance, you must meet Karen this early in life...please do tell her of the people that still love and miss her and find her voice to be hauntingly beautiful and dreamy. But overall I hope you are still here to read this and will be for a long time coming!

  • @N7RUECOM Just saw your comments hope everthing worked out good luck just a fan

Karen is nº 6. She deserves Nº 1!!!

    MARCH 2, 2010 KARENS 60 BIRTHDAY

  • Another "hourra!" for the Carpenters. But here I'm also glad that the musicians could express themselves, wich must not be obvious on a big 1 hour tv show.

  • miss you Carpenters

  • Chills

  • here she is especially slim

  • @jumashumba That's why it's called anorexia.

  • @jumashumba Dont you mean half dead

  • Oooo! these were a gem to watch!!! thank you so much for posting these. I love Karen Carpenter.

  • THat's right I forgot she was a very accomplished drummer! got, what a voice...hope Richard is doing well..

  • KAREN : JE T'AIME !!!!!!!!

  • What a voice ,What a tragic loss,So sad. Thanks for so many good songs

  • That mic is so big you cant see her mouth! HEHE! Thats the 70's for ya!

  • thats even the 90s for you!

  • In this video, which I believe to be 1978, she looks really really thin to me......Bless her so much. She just didn't realize just how awesome she was!....

  • Karen didn't hate performing at all !

She LOVED performing. What she wasn't crazy about was being pushed to the front and off the drums.

Dick Clark has even commented on how much she loved performing 'live', and that he had the upmost respect for Karen because she always gave 'her all'.

  • Well now we know she was and is irreplaceable. That can be said of only a few artists. Also, I loved the fact in performance she does not imitate the records but recreates each song in the moment.

  • JESUS she was thin here.... R.I.P.

  • I love the Carpeners, saddened by the untimely death of such a great talent. If you look here you can see how she was fading. Poor dear, we love you so.

Nice also to see LIVE versions of the songs they did... thank you for posting this.

  • i like too much your voice karen until now your the best music for me

  • wow!! they really jammed on "Good-bye To Love"!! Love it! !!

  • this just made me cry so sad i wish that Karen was still alive i wander what what she would be doing now?

  • I did read the books and saw most of the reality. THey did get along and very well. It was Richard who made Karen a Superstar with his brilliant music and it was Karen who hated to perform - she is human ya know. She did not like to perform, nor does babs and nor does carly simon...it's just personality... don't change a person because of what they can do and what they cannot.. LOVE WHAT THEY DO BEST !!!!! Miss you Karen - now 26 years later - omg !!!! YOu sound the same now !! :)

  • I miss Karen. SHe was my childhood voice and remain such in my brain. TO this day, when I hear her voice, I flash back to being a happy kid in MN ! She is also my memory of halloween because it was her song that must have been number one that month !!!!

Hootie hoot ! Just love her voice and this music. I did research and I've plucked every song never released from her into my collection. It took forever but I have it all - unless the brilliant Richard will give us more? Thanks RICH !

  • Karen was really shy and it took a lot of courage for her to get in front and sing, she would have rather stayed behind the drums and play. One of the most gifted singers ever!!! Miss her..............

  • Some ppl only like things they know and are used to, that's why they never like hearing the songs they like being improvised on stage, however beautiful, refreshing and innovative the performance is :P

For me, I think The Carpenters are equally enchanting on disc and on stage.

  • I've always preferred her studio performances to her live performances. She over did it when she was singing to an audience. She wasn't a natural at performing live; She had to be talked into getting out from behind the drums, and I think in the process of becoming comfortable being up in front she adopted a kind of smarmy Vegas-like stage presence. In the studio, however, she wasn't trying to please a crowd and her emotion was genuine and very deep.

  • And another knife in Karens back when the drum solo was on..Karen was a drummer,,That should have been her solo!!! That Richard just really hated Karen..He's a JERK!

  • I don't think Richard hated her at all. He was great at getting that great voice to sound so great. They were both pefectionist. Thet pushed themselves very hard. All the concerts and in studio making records all the time. It was a tough schedule. So sad she died. We miss her all.
