@MKUltraProject per wiki and accepted sources"Subaru (スバル?)Japanese pronunciation: [subaɽu]; English pronunciation: /ˈsuːbəruː/ soo-bə-roo is the automobile manufacturing division of Japanese transportation conglomerate Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI)."
Basically a motorcycle with a car body... I think they're cute, but cheap...yes. Cheaply made. Not a high point in the company's history. Basically a disposable car... the bottom rusted out at an amazing rate.
Soo-bahr-ooo! Wow! $1,297 point of entry which means you paid Subaru America that price for the car, and you picked it up off as it rolled off the boat or they delivered to you at an extra cost. Subaru is the Japanese word the Pleiades star cluster. This is the "cheap and ugly" Subaru 360.
What a horrible advertising campaign - "Hey folks, wanna buy a cheap, unheard of, strange, tiny, "ugly" car by a creepy girl who can only say 4 words?"
That brake drum for $12.67 is kind of pricey when you remember this was the early 70's. If my math is right that would price a brake rotor for a Corolla at $169.
Hmm, Malcolm Bricklin's first venture into the automotive business was importing those cars, then Subaru bought him out because they found out what a hustler he was. He then too that money and developed the "Bricklin" car around 1974-75, then in the early 80s started importing the "Yugo", now I heard he wants to sell some crap Chinese car. Cheap and ugly seems to go hand in hand with the man.
The ol' 360 was "cheap & ugly", in a cute sort of way, but a Volkswagen Beetle sold for around $1,600, in 1966. Few a couple of hundred more up front, or maybe $8.00 more per month, and you could have a "real" car. And who cared about gas mileage, when gas was 26 cents a gallon?
Plus, the 360 had a 2 cylinder, 2 cycle engine, which meant you had to add oil to the gas, like a chainsaw. Who'd put up with that?
Automotive Darwinism: Poor lil' 360 couldn't compete against the Beetle.
If fuel economy is your only way of assessing quality... The could easily make 100mpg vehicles, however they would not be very profitable and would possibly be unsafe. Also the way the fuel economy was calculated then was much less "stringent" as it is now. A vehicle that was rated at 66mpg in the 60s and 70s would probably get about 40mpg with the current MPG test methods.
Finally, a 60s VW Beetle's 0-60 time is about 30 seconds.. imagine the 0-60 in this car!
we have the ability to make cars with 100+ MPG but the giant oil corps will not allow it...think we are a free people? think that the free market is open to all? think again.
@daisyroots If giant oil corps you mean government and Ralph Nader types.. then maybe.. Strip all regulations on cars from safety to emissions, disregard any consumer preference, and I'm certain a 200mpg vehicle could be made today.. however it'll be unsafe, crampt and the extent of the accessories would be limited to headlights and door handles..
Two stroke, two cyclinder engine first imported by Malcolm Bricklin (Bricklin SV1) in the late 60's. Imagine a two stroke car, having to add oil. The commercial doesn't show the smoke these cars would make. I think Saab had a two stroke in the 60's too.
several hundred of these sat for a couple of years at Fort Mason in San Francisco after they couldn't be sold; red yellow and white, and after a while you could see them fading. In about '72, they disappeared. I heard a rumor that they were taken out in the Pacific and just dumped. They were taken off the market because they didn't fully comply with DOT regulations.
@ MalWolf01 Banned for 40 years???? They have been importing Subaru ever since this car. FF1, Brat, GL wagon, Legacy... If you don't know what you are talking about you shouldn't post.
Subaru was not just reintroduced in 2009, they were never banned and they were reintroduced circa 1970 with higher quality cars. Since then their quality and lineup has increased even much more.
@bettydaw1970 Inflation Calculator says it's $7504.82 in 2009 dollars. Consider that the cheapest 2009 new cars are about $10000, so this is VERY cheap.
@iTsKoNvIcT 55 mph top speed. NOT a good idea for any roads with high speeds. As a matter of fact, Subaru wasn't a good idea until 1974 or so. But this was the spark that started it.
Such a cool, cheap & ugly car! Suicide doors are the best and the lack of disclaimers is refreshing. No: "Professional driver. Closed course. Do not attempt." or "Do not pour beverages into fuel tank."
Has anybody else noticed the boat's name? In Spanish, "Bastante" means: "enough, sufficient." A veiled attempt at convincing us that the big-ass muscle cars of the time were unnecessary as the little wind-up toy Su-BAR-u was all we needed? Hmmm... A coincidence?

I was just reading about this car in the book about the Yugo The Rise and Fall of the Worse Car This Subaru was imported by Bricklin the same guy that imported the Yugo. They got around safety laws with the 360 because it weighed less than 1000 lbs and the USA Safety laws only applied to vehicles more than 1000 lbs. Technically it was a motorcycle. I believe the original 360 was 1500 lbs but they reduced the weight to get under the wire
@cdilmore Can't happen. The car got 66 mph because it weighed only 900 pounds, and used a 360cc two stroke engine. A car like that can not meet modern safety/emissions standards.
Too bad today's Subarus are such gas-hogs. I'd replace my 2000 Legacy L wagon with another Subaru wagon, if only SoA would make the diesel powerplant available in the US.
But they won't, so I'll look elsewhere for my next car.
Ascot Raceway in Southern California had a demolition derby using all brand new Subaru 360's just like this one. They couldn't sell them even for $1200.
Soon, we will all drive cars much like this one, probably with 3 and even 2 cylinder engines just like this one (360cc 2-stroke)
It will happen. Because Obama and the Terminator (Arnold of Calif.) have decreed that we must have cars that get 55mpg.
Does anyone happen to know when we started pronouncing it "SU-ba-ru?" I can remember as far back as the late 1978-79we were saying it the same as we do today.
@ter1960 its probably would not get 66mpg on the epa ratings they use today. In fact the prius's rating is being revised because most of them were not getting the epa ratings. This is an old fashion carbed engine without all the new fuel saving techology available today.
But as the technology develops so should car design, this car equipped, with EFI, Direct ignition, and turbo should give a remarkable performance improvement without a significant price increase.
I mentioned a 1998 because someone made a comparison between a 1998 Crown Vic and a 1979 LTD.
Fully aware the Panther platform is still in use for current production Ford fleet cars for police, taxi and limo services as well as for the Lincoln Town Car and the Mercury Grand Marquis (the Crown Victoria is strictly fleet at this time).
@NitroGadvRules Now that you mentioned it, the 1979 LTD platform really debuted as the 1972 Torino, similar to the one seen in last year's Clint Eastwood film.
That's like the Citroen 2CV, or "Ducky" as they were called. 2 cyl air cooled boxer engine, built like an anvil. Can only be destroyed by running out of oil.
i like how it got 66mpg! why cant we do that now?

most people don't want to drive around in a 1000 lbs car when the average vehicle on the road is 3000 lbs.

@ter1960 its probably would not get 66mpg on the epa ratings they use today. In fact the prius's rating is being revised because most of them were not getting the epa ratings. This is an old fashion carbed engine without all the new fuel saving techology available today.

I agree with you Nitro.. 100%
But as the technology develops so should car design, this car equipped, with EFI, Direct ignition, and turbo should give a remarkable performance improvement without a significant price increase.

Nah, she died when her 1979 LTD was rear ended and burst into flames.

@ducatinova
are you sure it wasn't a 1998 Crown Victoria? Oh wait, same difference.
WunderDoob 2 years ago
Very observant, considering both a 1979 LTD and a 1998 Crown Vic are basically on the same platform: Ford Panther.
Watcher3223 2 years ago
@Watcher3223 actually you could go even further and say the 2009 crown vic is the same platform as well.
NitroGadvRules 1 year ago
I mentioned a 1998 because someone made a comparison between a 1998 Crown Vic and a 1979 LTD.
Fully aware the Panther platform is still in use for current production Ford fleet cars for police, taxi and limo services as well as for the Lincoln Town Car and the Mercury Grand Marquis (the Crown Victoria is strictly fleet at this time).
Watcher3223 1 year ago
@NitroGadvRules Now that you mentioned it, the 1979 LTD platform really debuted as the 1972 Torino, similar to the one seen in last year's Clint Eastwood film.

That's like the Citroen 2CV, or "Ducky" as they were called. 2 cyl air cooled boxer engine, built like an anvil. Can only be destroyed by running out of oil.

It might be "cheap and ugly", but at least it does not sound like a Cessna.

I dig the enunciation too..su-BAR-u?!
Shovelhd80 2 years ago
Emphasis on BAR, as in you need to go to a bar so as to get so drunk that you don't care about people making fun of your Su-BAR-u.
Watcher3223 2 years ago
I don't think your cheap and ugly little Subaru :)

FART-BARR-ROOO
It did make a loud fart exhaust sound and blue smoke as you had to mix oil with gasoline for fuel to run it on.
