Man, God bless YouTube. This devil/grasshopper image has been in my subconscious for decades. The movie terrified me as a kid in the 1970s, but I could not remember the name. It's being released on DVD this month by Hammer, and apparently they are looking for an American distributor.
the movie is called FIVE MILLON YEARS TO EARTH sorry, But i checked at the local video store the movie has not been released yet probably held up by religious morons who think it has somthing to do with satan. its a grass hopper ruler from mars. scared the shit out of me when i was a kid. I stayed up late to watch tv and saw this movie.got some bad dreams out of that.
mmmmm verry strange im starteing to think that alinens and demons and satan have something to do with one another some how im not so sure there from other planets any more
I think it should be pointed out that this is not supposed to be Satan. The premise of this superb film is that Martian creatures infiltrated the minds of human beings in prehistory. As a result, mankind's vision of evil was these Martian arthropods. It is a brilliant story that uses science fiction to explain the human fascination with evil and the devil.
P.S. It's not Satan. Just pretty good special effects for its time. Great memories from my childhood, too. But if you thought you might have found Satan with this search, keep on searching.
The best of all the various Quatermass versions. Thank God for Andrew Keir, to put to rest for good the horrible performances of Brian Donleavy, freakishly miscast as Quatermass in the earlier first two Hammer features. Nigel Kneale (who wrote this movie) is one of the greats! Wish he had done even more.
Scared crap out of me also! Im listening to the original TV series of the PIT1958, not as good but goes into more detail.., This later film is one of my all time favourite SF films,.that last FX is still amazingly scary! What a story!
I saw this on TV in Phoenix around '74 or '75, on a Saturday afternoon (guess that's why my Parents weren't really concerned about what was on the TV - what could be bad at that time of day?)..
Besides the "Peeking Alien" from "Communion", this image has to be the most frightening image I have ever seen on film...it gave me nghtmares as a child! The design of the buried martian ship has to be one of the two very best designs from Hollywood..the other being the Proteus from "Fantastic Voyage" Thanx for posting this Vid!
One very surreal ending. I never thought of the image as being Satan's, but thank you for making me think about it.
Don't replace the noise. A thing that makes the ending so good is the fact that the only sound you hear is the destruction of London and the whirr, hiss, roar sound. The noise makes it all hyperreal, because you tune out to everything in that situation and sound becomes a unseen influence on You. By not having a score, it makes the viewer concentrate on the image of the creature.
Cool! I loved all the Quatermass stuff, scared me silly when I was a kid and still stands up for its atmosphere and brilliant ideas and dialog. Great stuff, recommended to anyone who seriously digs SF/Horror.

Quatermass inspired so much.
Thankyou Quatermass.

That same sentiment goes to the God seekers, too.

5 Million Years To Earth. A true-blue sci-fi film! I saw it at a matinee when I was 10 years old and loved it ever since.

One of the two or three best sf films ever made. Anyone who hasn't seen it should do so immediately.
