  • I wish that the 9ers still would play like that:(

  • Any team who gave Montana that much time in the 4th quarter deserved what was given to them.

  • I'm a huge Bengals fan (go ahead and laugh) but for this Superbowl, I gotta hand it to the 49ers. Even though, we all know, without Joe, the Bengals would've had this one.

  • @92796Apollo ,49ers still wouldve won, with Rice and Taylor and Roger Craig

  • @tuzwol Maybe. The Bengals had a pretty strong lead until the 4th quarter. But, can we both agree that the modern 49ers and modern Bengals are rather, err, awful?

  • @tuzwol heeeeeeeeellllll no

  • heres a stat four Super Bowls zero interceptions

  • I've been looking a few of the old 49er videos from the glory days, and I agree, Joe is simply the best ever... but I noticed that after every last 2nd touchdown, with everyone else jumping up and down, Bill Walsh is walking around with, dead serious, setting up the next play. What an amazing group the 49ers had.

  • Gives me chills EVERY time!!! This is the definition of greatness. When the chips are down, and everyone is against you, you come back and rip the hearts out of the opposition. Just when they think they have you beat... GUESS AGAIN!!! That was the greatness of the 49ers during those years! Like the Bulls of the 90's, the Yankees/Lakers of the early 2000's. I'm a 49ers fan, and hate the other teams I mentioned, but as a member of the sports media, I can't help but recognize greatness!

  • LOL Where can I get my Professional Oxygen polo shirt dammit!!!

  • Montana is the best, but Brady is better is better than Marino. Stats don't count for everything. Marino would rather have a record than take one for the team.. Don't say he didn't have a decent team around him.

  • Montana has never lost on the big stage. As a Coach or as a fan, thats all you could ever ask for from a player. He is the greatest to ever play because he won large facing the best, as in Dan Marino and John Elway, which are far better QB's than Tom Brady has ever had to face. Montana also won twice without Jerry Rice. You see, Joe cool doesn't need a perfect season or 50 touchdowns. Joe has never thrown a pick in four of his superbowls and has won games the best way games can be won

  • @jp3sucks ,yeah but he had Dwight Clark who was very good in his won right, 85 receptions and over 1100 receiving yards in 1 season,Montana was the best, but he always had help, lets not forget his defense contained the Dolphins who had an explosive offense, they had a QB by the name of Dan Marino who threw for over 5000 yards that season and had 48 touchdowns as well

  • Is it just me or does Sam Wyche look like Montana's twin brother?

  • bengals got cool joe'd

  • John taylor went to college 2 miles from my house and he sold cars for reggie jackson while in the offseason , funny reggie's brother lives 3 doors down from me.

  • whats with all the padding and shit?

  • I am a Bears fan, Super Bowl XX is an awesome Super Bowl, but I also consider Super Bowl XXIII a great Super Bowl, too. Joe Montana and the 49ers offense did great by getting the them down the field and the pass Montana made to John Taylor in the end zone is awesome, a great game, a close one, not a blowout.

  • im only 17 -_- i wish i was born when this guy played:(

  • @johnnyespinoza1 I feel ya man that would be great

  • haha wow, every single comment is a long arguement comment, anyways, ive said this before, Brady's good, but i hate when people compare him to Joe Montana, when you see Brady go to 4 superbowls, and win them ALL, then u can say crap, but for now, SHUT.THE.HELL.UP.

  • @bigbadben7 How are you seriously gonna defend Rapistberger? He's been date-raping chicks since college, it a known fact

  • the mvp of super bowl 23 was jerry rice

  • i remember watchin that super bowl when i was a kid that was the greatest superbowl play of all time

  • all the bengles they show after the catch are like "shit, man"

  • Taylor H.O.F.!

  • @jukebox80sman Yes , best blocking wide receiver in history!

  • Did U know that was Taylor's only catch of the game?

  • i'm a niner fan and this is one of the greatest moments to me as a sports fan. but i can't help but put myself in the position of the bengals and their fans too. heartbreak.

  • i was born in 1995 (year the niners won their 5th super bowl) and ever since birth, ive been a fan. my dad had a niners cap on when i was born and ever since i was 3, my dad has told me everything about the niners. his favorite player was john taylor and when taylor caught this pass, my dad said he and his buds had the biggest dog-pile ever.

sorry, just wanted to say that. i can thank my dad, the niners and john taylor for making me a NINERS FAN!

    GO NINERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 12 catches for 222 yards and a score??!.....in the Super Bowl....when football was still football, and not the ''passer/receiver friendly'' league it is today. There are great teams in league history, but the NINERS are the sole Legendary and most clutch team the NFL will ever see. What they did, and when and how they did it, will NEVER be matched. 5-0

  • if one of those field goals by the bengals in this games was a touchdown the score would have been 20-20 with this score

  • @quarf53206 Why even say that? This statement is ridiculous, because hundreds of meaningful games in NFL history would be different if a FG was only a TD, or a kick wide right made it, or someone got those extra two yards, or if there was only 20 more seconds. The list goes on and on. They DIDN'T score a TD instead of a FG and the game WASN'T 20-20.

  • @Bookem311 just commenting that while this was one of the better super bowls the bengals didnt play well enough to win the game so they didnt win the game. If you score 16 points in a football game but the only touchdown you score was on special teams. you didnt play well enough to win you played well enough to not lose

  • @Bookem311 and there is a difference between playing well enough to win and well enough to not lose

  • Joe Montana said that he used Jerry Rice as a decoy for this last play.

  • 1:10

    lol

  • watched the end of this game on nfl network last week. john taylor talk about an unexpected hero especially when rice had amazing day

  • @jem174 Yeah, in the most exciting moment of his life, on pure adrenaline, he should have known better. Obviously you've never scored a meaningful touchdown, lame ass.

  • @jem174,

There was nothing pathetic about that play or anything that happened post-play.

    In short, you're an idiot.

  • @jem174 also who knows given that the Bengals had returned a touchdown earlier in the game maybe he was just being superstitious. I mean if there was no time left then i would go nuts but until that clock reads all zero's smart thing to do is shut up and play

  • the bengals not being able to get in the endzone was what lost them this game

  • This was the classic rope a dope if you will. The entire game Montana went to Rice, but for the game winner he went to Taylor & what a call it was. Great Super Bowl, one of my faveorites.

  • this was fucking sweet. who doubted montana this day? sure bens good, peyton, brady are good too... but go fuck yourselves, go to your own team's highlight films you fucking pussys... 9ers 4 ever fuck u if u dont like it

  • I dont know anything about American Football. I enjoy watching it when its shown on tv and with some of my american friends. But listening to the commentary, god do i feel sorry for the bengals coach. Like really sorry. Imagine how he felt. Anyway Go 49ers sounds like they are making a serious comeback this year

  • @bigbadben. You put up a lot of stats and numbers which is nice. But imo, the only way to really compare montana's performance to rothlisberger's is to put their team against the teams of their respective eras. Put montana's O against the teams we have now and they'd shine. Put Rothlisberger's O against the Eagles and Reggie white, the bears and Mike singletary, Richard Dent , and the Giants and LT and i'd think it would be much more difficult on Rothlisberger than it would be on Montana.

  • dont forget you were allowed to kill the quarterback in the 80's................i mean kill him. just look at videos of hits back then.

  • @BIGRED224FOREVER I agree. Some of the hits Montana took would be fines and suspensions if they were to happen to Brady or Manning. I nothing against those guys really.

But the NFL is protecting their most important players, especially during this

  • lol Elvis Grbac started for the 9ers in the 1995 regular season game against Dallas and smoked 'em. Steve Bono also went on to start for Kansas City.

A lot of legacies (coaches and players) began with the 1980's 49er organization.

  • Take Joe out of those 49er teams of the late 80's early 90's and the Niners were still an offensive machine. Steve Young, Steve Bono, and Elvis Grbac were all successful running that system. In fact, the years after Montana left, the Niners made it to the NFC Championship 3 years and won a Superbowl.

Take Elway from the Broncos, they win one playoff game in 12 years....that speaks volumes on who was replaceable and who wasn't.

  • That's failed logic. The quarterbacks after Elway wern't as good compared to Young who is another hall of famer. I don't think the 49ers would have been successful if their replacement QB was at the talent level of say...Brian Griese? He was good for a while, but rather inconsistent, and threw one too many picks. You can have all the weapons you want, but nothing works if your QB can't make it go.

You also have to take into consideration personnel on defense. 49ers had some studs on that side.

  • Steve Bono and Elvis Grbac? LOL. They sucked. They both had like 2 or 3 good years between them.

The only argument you have if for Young, but Young just happened to be a great player. And did you ever consider how much Young benefitted from being under Montana all those years.

Montana was great in SF and still good in KC with trash surrounding him at WR. Montana is the GOAT. Accept it, because the rest of the world did a long ago.

  • my name is ben worthlessburger and dae' call me tater head!

  • I will never love another football like this one. What a great moment. 20 years!

  • Joe Cool is clearly the best QB of all time!

  • ush on the defensive side

  • With all due respect to all the great qb's mentioned here, Montana is the greatest qb ever. He had incredible footwork, accuracy, touch, and most important he always came thru in the clutch. If i need a touchdown and it's the 4th qtr with 2 minutes left, i take Montana everytime.

  • Agreed and agreed, I will get in a bar fight defending Joe Montana. It pissed me off in 2007 when they started comparing Brady to Montana, yes Brady set up two field goal winning drives, I've never seen throw a game winning touchdown drive (something Big Ben Roethlisberger has one) in a playoff game. The one chance he could have done it (Brady in the 2006 afc championship game) he threw an interception.

  • @SFFOOL76 What recivers did Brady have in 2006 his number 1 reciver was Rache Caldwell. Brady dosent have game winning td's what about the overtime bomb againts the Dolphins in 2003, the 2003 game againts the Broncos on Monday night, The 2007 game against the Ravens, the Bills comeback in 2009, the 2007 comeback against the Colts, the come back week 17 against the Giants.

  • He threw a straight up interception in 2006, he would have thrown in it with Moss and Welker. I mentioned this fact about him in a PLAYOFF GAME , you nincompoop. SlimJimWorm sounds like your a little butt hurt to the truth. Yes Brady deserves to be in the Hall of Fame and his 3 rings, but he had the same talent in 2009 and they lost in the playoffs to the Ravens at HOME, what is your excuse for that?

    p.s.

You mean 18-1, video surveillance and Montana was 4-0 in the Super Bowls!

  • @SFFOOL76 Are you fuckin stupid Wes Welker was out with the ACL you idiot and plus everyone knows Moss after 2007 has become a slouch and plus what talent did we have last year Chris Baker, Sam Aiken you call that talent your a idiot. And Brady didnt have the same talent remeber we had Stollworth and Gaffeny and Montana had a great defense in all those superbowls right. And people overate our defense it was good and solid but not great we just made plays.

  • @SFFOOL76 And you can very well say the last minute drive in Superbowl XLII to make the game 14-10 you can very well say that drive was similar to a Montana drive and even though we lost that game it was the defenses falt. So stop down playing what Brady has done he has won championships with C level talent campared to Montana who had the greast reciver of alltime in Rice and more talent and then when Brady finally got the talent he goes 18-0 Brady isnt Montana but he is similar to him.

  • @JMullown Keep in mind the 49er's were 11 and a half point favorites in this game and barely won a game they should have won rather easily.

  • @JMullown agreed.....marino, favre and elway may have had stronger arms than montana, however, montana was the best big game QB to ever play the game. 4-0 in SBs, 3 SB MVPS, and 0 interceptions in the big show. There was just something magical about him when he played in the SB. The only other athletes in sports i might compare him to are michael jordan and derek jeter.

  • @JMullown Indeed. And Montana managed to achieve it in the Super Bowl, driving 92 yards down the field for the winning touchdown.

  • Hey, Come on, LOL.

    It's not Elway doesn't have a claim.

2nd most 4th Quarter comebacks to Marino, 2nd most home wins, 2nd most all time wins both to Favre.

Most SB games for a QB.

Back to Back titles and a SB MVP and great carrer stats which are higher than Joe's in terms of yds, TDs.

  • Yes But Elway could only win one SB! Even when he had the Orange C

  • Elway win back to Back Super Bowls with enver in 97 and 98.

The Orange Crush id the freakin' 77 AFC Champ Broncos D.

  • It's not all about yards and TD's. It's the excellence at which you play the game.

No QB ever played it with more excellence than Joe Montana. Period.

  • He was a System QB, A Robot, he was the best West Coast QB ever, that's all.

He did not call his own plays or was even permitted to audible much at the line

  • There is no such thing as a "system QB" that is an over-perpetuated myth.

Every QB plays in a system, some play better than others. MANY players have played in the same system Montana did, most of them sucked. Most QB's today play in a variation of what Montana played in, most of them suck.

That alone is proof that it's the player that makes the "system" not the other way around.

Montana was also successful in KC with a GARBAGE receiving core. He could've made it almost anywhere. GOAT.

  • KC changed from the Power running of Okoye to the West Coast to suit Montana.

They didn't keep their previous passing system

I said Joe was the best at it but Farve won 3 NFL MVPs, 2 conference and 1 SB with it, Gannon was MVP and Conference Champ with it and Hasselbeck was a Conferece Champ with it as well.

That system is a product of the 1978 Rules changes that doesn't allow you to touch the WR past 5 yds.

  • That really made no difference, because in reality had they stuck with a power running system it would've only benefitted him. Most QB's succeed in systems balanced on the run, so what do you think Montana would've done in that? LOL.

Also, you named a few QB's. Let me name some that failed in the system.., Elvis Grbac. Steve Bono. Danny Kanell. Rick Mirer. Randall Cunningham (last years in Philly), Tony Graziani, Brian Griese... I could go on all day.

It's the player, not the system. Fact.

  • Also, you say the West Coast Offense is the product of the rule change? Nope.

Did you know that the late 60's-early '70's Giants ran a nearly identical system with Fran Tarkenton, i.e. short passes to gradually set up mediums and longs? I have an old NFL film explaining that on VHS.

Bill Walsh perfected it, but it had been run in different forms many times before the rule change.

  • Imeant it grand success.

As a Steeelrs fan I'm quite aware that Walsh ran it in Cincinnati in the 70s under Head Coach Paul Brown as the Bengales O coordinator.

Check out Trankenton's Super Bolw perfomances and career QB raiting compared to even the QB who have lost SBs with it in the 80s and beyoynd as well as the winners.

  • Check out his QB raiitngs especiall with the Giants where he ran it, even worse than in Minnesota.

My bad on the SB comment casue he didn't run it in the SBs with The Vikes.

  • better to be a robot than a potato head! heres a play montana never called but i know of someone who did. Its first and ten guys this is the potato head special..............gonna run my crotch rocket through the intersection ill land in the windshield with emphasis on (in) the windshield, you call the cops and we will take the rock that being a helmet and leave it at home as to the whole purpose of potato head special x up on 3.

  • "Worthlessberger"? LOL, 2 Super Bowl Rigns at age 26, the game winning drive in a SB, the youngest QB to win a SB, NFL Rookie of the year, Rookie records for games won, consecutive games won, comp. % and pass rait. breaking Marino's % and rait

3 career perfect rait games, 2 more than Brady one less than P. Manning.

A spiked ball to stop the clock prevented his fourth and tie with manning.

    104 raiting in 07, 96 and 98 raitings in 04/ 05.

15 4th quarter comebacks, most wins ever first 5 years.

  • Joe Montana made the 49ers running game better. He forced defenses to drop an extra defensiveman in coverage rather than stack the line. In 81' their running game was just above league average. Check da stats! Super Joe FTW!!!

  • It's the West Coast system that forces an extra man in coverage, not him.

However, I said he executed the best.

  • go back and read your dumbass almanac....................you sound dumb talking football!

  • I was using abreviations for space reasons.

    Let me explain little boy.

rait is for Passer Raiting, % is for Completion Percentage, 07 , 04 and 05 are for the seasons of 2007, 2004 and 2005.

    I sound dumb? LOL!

Your the idiot who leaves a post about "tater head"

    Grow Up Dork!

  • But he is still a taterhead! c'mon ben in an interview? seriously you know he is a taterhead i know he has the highest percentage throwing under 5 yards to hines ward he is 8 for 10 for 82 yards and a score from willie. A tater head could drive that bus. Actually he has matched brady in rings so he is his equall. Tatehead or not he will not be hanging out in womens restrooms in vegas anymore............ehh rapplesburger!

  • Well, the rape shit has been proven to be BS based onthe accusers own emails and text messages she sent that night and the day after and a signed sworn affidaivt by a co worker who said the girl made it up and wanted "To get some Roethlisberger" and was trying to get his Cell # and Pitt tickets before he arrived.

The most impressive stat is yds per attempt not yds per comletion but per attempts and Ben is better than anyone.

    Keep hatin, he'll keep winning.

  • The reason I say he was the best WC Offense QB is becasue he executed it so well and, unlike many others, he was able to make plays outside of the system.

My point is that I don't believe he could have sustained that type of play outside of that system had he been in a more traditional system which relied more on raw skills.

The fact is that his most impressive stats, Passer raiting and Comp. % stem from a "High % passing attack" which attacks LBs with WRs not Safties and throws to RBs alot.

  • KC went to the West Coast O when Joe arrived and went away from the power running game.

Notre Dame he won a title but he was still a 3rd rd pick, even Walsh didn't take him in the first Rd based on his raw skills.

Anyways, I think Joe is top 5 all time easy and maybe top 3 and I doubt he will ever leave my top 5 no matter who comes along.

  • Brady IS a HOF great

  • shut up dude, young couldn't hold a candle next to montana

  • You cant compare Young to JOE MONTANA,who is the greatest of all time, go suck on tom bradys dick faggot

  • Montana was a system QB.

  • Not precisely, he was in a tight-knit system, but he also made plays nobody else could make (even before Rice and Taylor joined the cast).

Montana could beat you 50 ways from Sunday with his quick release, slick improvising, and scrambles that annoyed the shit out of four star defenses throughout an entire game (broke the scrambling record for a Superbowl QB at SB 43).

Montana went to a shitty system in KC, and STILL made epic comebacks (and playoff visits), the man was a God.

  • Like I have said, he was easily the best West Coast QB ever.

All QBs have certain attributes they can add to those systems fromtime to time but that doesn't mean that they would be able to rely on them all the time.

Some of my clearest memories of Montana is not being able to finish games.

86 Divisional Rd vs Giants, 90 NFC title game vs Giants and AFC title game vs Bills.

    Rice elevated his game.

Joe had 2 rings but without Rice he would have lost his job to Young in 88 when he was benched.

  • I see what you mean but I will object to this:

"86 Divisional Rd vs Giants, 90 NFC title game vs Giants" It's no coincidence that Joe just happened to get "injured twice" by the same team in the playoffs within a brutal fashion.

Parcells and Belichick despised Joe Montana to the point that hidden bounties/incentives were placed on his head throughout the locker room. -They wanted to make Joe damaged goods (like every team which despised the 49ers), cheap shots were a fad back then.

  • @Bigbadben7 I guess its better than being a serial rapist!

  • @BIGRED224FOREVER

Ben is not a Rapist. NO DNA! No Creditable witnesses! The cop asked her that night, "Were you Raped?" She responded "NO!" Read the police report.

You're a Rapist! It must be true because I said it.

It's one thing to be arrested but not convicted.

Ben wasn't even arrested in either instance.

First victim's own emails and text prove she lied and the second was the criminal, underage drinker and wearing a name tag "DTF" she told Ben meant "Down to Fuck"

  • @Bigbadben7 How are you seriously gonna defend Rapistberger I mean Roethlisberger. He's been date-raping chicks since college, and everyone that has been around him knows it. But only a few of them have talked about it. The Rooneys run a tight ship, no leaks. But listen to some of his college teammates and classmates. Listen to former Steelers teammates it's nothing new for Ben.

  • @alexxx679 NOBODY has ever accused Ben of College Date Rape and you CAN"T show me one source that says anyone Did!

Both of his recent accusers are proven liars.

The first by her emails/ text messages dated after the alleged assault saying how she wants to date Ben and what a great time she is having as well as her friend signing an affidavit saying she went to the room to "Get Some Roethlisberger" and the recect accuser told the cop she was NOT raped and NO DNA was found on her by the rape KIT!
