A. All European swords were made with grace and finesse in mind. None were made to be used with "brute strength", as you describe it. It's just an urban myth.
B. All swords, Katana included, are vulnerable to strikes received on the edge. It literally destroys your blade. Proof:
2: Katana's are meant to slash and cut your opponnet first than just smack your sword into his blade, and the Katana is about Balance but the Long Sword is used by More Steel which is more powerful with brute Strengh
3: In Battle Stances, The Samurai has his Advatage for the Better cut and Speed while Mr.Knight is Drawing his Sword, His Neck is Gushing with Blood. Or the Samurai will just Drown him Either way
1. You don't speak English either , as it appears...
2. Longswords belong in the same weight category as the Katana, but is generally more hilt-balanced than the latter, so it's actually LESS strength-oriented than the Katana.
3. The only real advantage the Katana has over the Longsword, the speed at which it can be drawn, is easily countered by simply entering the duel with your Longsword already drawn. Otherwise, the Samurai have no speed advantage whatsoever.
2. The Samurai way of Fighting is way different than the Europeans would fight, the Japanese would be One cut One Kill and Withdraw. So The Samurai has Better speed to engage a dude in full metal plating which is heavy and slows him down makes him and easy target, but the Armor protects most of the European warrior which is his advantage.
3. If your an Expert Just spill out all the shit so I don't get so annoyed by some Historian
@brianthao102 im not siding with anybody but if a sword any sword gets a hit a number of times over and over in time it will break just that maybe a katana might take longer to break is all
@eric24567 what I can say for you is because of this bullshit thought that China invented everything, now Chinese only do copy today don't they?. any knowledge has been passed on humanity beyond nations for several thousand years and developed by many different people. Chinese should realize how stupid identity they still hold in 21 century.
@Cartman0112 21st Century? alright then i'll bring an AMERICAN M240 and mow down an army of samurai. there's a reason why people across the world learn history, so we don't make the same fucking mistake again. or would you argue that Japanese only visited China during the early 1900s? and by visit i mean raping thousands of women and slaughtering millions of Chinese people? like it or not, its fucking history, don't try to cheat your way out of it.
@eric24567 Don't be fooled by your government lol, as long as your people are furious with Japan, your government is safe. and your frustration will never be gone away from your life. rape women? Nanking genocide? If you have brain, don't believe history government propagandized. your real enemy is never Japan, that's your people and government absolutely.
@eric24567 Chinese was defeated by France and UK and all others, how can the greatest nation in Asia was defeated by UK coming from almost back side of Earth? If your shitty empire wasnt defeated by Western, JAPAN DID NOT HAVE TO FIGHT AT ALL!! Also many Chinese took side of Western as replacement of western conquerors and willingly exploit South East Asian people, even now trashy Chinese scums taking over economy in Indonesia, Singapore, etc as sucking UK's ass intensively.
@Cartman0112 this is why you need to learn history. Tang dynasty and Quin dynasty are separated by nearly 1000 years. and here's another fact: Japan decided to invade China and the rest of Asia; Japan decided to bomb Pearl Harbor. No country in the damn world would want to invade Japan because there's nothing there!! China is such a big target because of its natural resources. and look at it now, China bounced back to be one of the world's superpower in less than a century
@catalinaguerrero I greatly disagree. Have you ever seen a welded broad sword? Absolutely remarkable how the Spanish and Celts were able to fuse iron and steel they way they did in the early days of the Roman Empire. The fact they were making them that way more than 1500 years before the Japanese started doing it is extraordinary.
Wait . . . I heard off the History Channel that the Samurai constantly switched sides after the battle was lost. As long as they where willing to kill themselves to preserve their honor the Lord of the opposing side might offer them a chance to join his army and the Samurai would, more often times then not, accept. They omit that bit of information.
katana any day over broad sword....in the time it took to get two cuts with the broad sword...he got 3 cuts with a katana...all tht power dosnt do u any good if the enemy is faster
They are, yes, Masters from XIV - XV century, but that doesn't mean that before them they didn't have an specific technique to use single or two handed swords. We do not have any manuscript to tell that (the absence of evidence is not the evidence of absence). Japan is another thing.
Comparing a medieval sword SINGLE handed sword VS a Katana (two handed) is unfair and anachronistic. They are from completely different continents, with completely different needs. In Europe, the knights had Mail Armor (then Plate Armor), and generally fighting on a horse. In order to cut mail, you need a fair amount of blade presence and, when riding a horse, good reach (from 32 to 37 inches of blade). They do not rely on brutal strength at all (search for Talhoffer and Fiore de Liberi)
@scottc13201420 wow.. if ur watching this because of some stupid cartoon hentai anime pussy poly pocket crap.. then stick to watching that unless you really want to expand your cultural knowledge.. weaksauce
If I'm going to battle and is asked to choose among bringing a Japanese sword or a European sword or a middle eastern sword(it has to be my own sword), I'll choose the European sword or the middle eastern sword. The reason is that the Japanese sword is just too beautiful, and I can't bare to see it being damaged in battle.
@harrison28514 You are so wrong, it can be seen that you haven't been paying attention to what they are saying, the Katana is so well made and so perfect that you can not even make a dent when fighting against another sword. is the best sword in the history of the world, beauty and lethal. You must be from the USA.
@Ayatanoaqui Without making a dent? Where the fuck on earth are you from? Yes katanas are elegent, no they are not alien perfect and still are damageable. In the feudal days of Japan, the police department used to keep records of sword damages after every major battle. Getting a few dents were really common. The small ones could be repaired and larger ones sometimes meant that the blade was wasted. There is a whole set of terms in Japanese to describe the shape of the dents on katana, idiot.
@Ayatanoaqui Sorry but harrison is right: How could a very hard sharpen blade not be damaged when hitting another cutting edge the same hard and sharp? It's physics, and nothing that a documentary who says wrong things like ''european swords rely on brute strength'' will change those physical rules. If it was so obvious that the Katana can't be damaged, how do you explain no one has ever seen one cutting massive steel or another blade? Why aren't there videos proving those feats? You got proofs?
@harrison28514 Nihontos truly are beautiful. And yes they'll be damaged in battle. But if you know how to use them (parry with the flat aso...) they will endure a longer time before being useless.
As for the Katana being more beautiful: That's of course a matter of taste, but when you look at good reproductions and not the bad ones of movies and co, there are amazing european swords too:
watch?v=xIyabBglQfA
Aren't they good-looking? The amazing balance, how light and manoeuverable they are? ;-)
@Railriderchris Actually my greatest passion lies in Middle Eastern Swords, and then comes European Swords and Japanese Swords, which I think are equally beautiful. Thanks for the video.
@harrison28514 Woops, sorry, i just noticed i inverted you and Ayatanoaqui concerning the damage who will ocur to swords in battle! It seems you already understood this, but sorry anyway X-(
@harrison28514 The Japanese Swords are very hard, they would not be damaged, additionally, if you die, you have a sword to be damaged; you'll be dead.
block with the back of the sword? that's were it's the hardest wrong the edge is the hardest the back of the sword aka the spine is softer it obsorbs inpact/shock from the edge wich is the hardest part idiot
@Grcar57 at least 2/4 of America is uneducated, capitalism no longer remains in America it's socialism, before the first world war there were no taxes,it was a "temporary" need to fuel our troops.the
The Katana is among best all-rounder blades in history, it's just a victim of it's own success; idiots everywhere claim that it can stop bullets and shoot lightning bolts so it's gained a certain stigma. The Katana is one of the greatest blades of all time, but it's still nothing more than a blade.
this guy dosn't know how shit about katana vs broadsword the katana cut with out motion of the straw and the broadsword made it practicly move the straw off the cam so in other words the katana is far suppirior
on the test cut with the straw, the man weilding the broadsword had to swing with brute force whereas the on wielding the Katana used very little force to cut through that was the subtle difference between the two.
@loujencece Well, first off, if you were going to compare a katana to anything it would be the bastard sword which emerged as the top tactical sword for war in the medieval age over the standard broadsword and shield.
As for cutting through straw: The reason the straw did not cut was because the katana was sharper, not because it was superior. A human body will not sway like straw, it will resist more and thus will be cut. Katanas cannot slice through full plate armor and chainmaille.
@SolidSnakeRules okay....I suggest you watch the deadlieat warrior, they provided some interesting data on the katana and believe me facts ans figures don't lie
@loujencece lol deadliest warrior. From the same people that tried to say a crocodile would kill a shark in the ocean.
I'm posting scientific figures. There's also a very interesting article online about a samurai vs knight situation which was written by a man with 30 years of experience in the field of historical research on the very subject. Google it if you want to know.
@loujencece dude. i wouldn't rely too much on that show. its built around entertainment and not scientific reliability. even if they have figures to show, it doesn't mean they're right. especially since their methods of obtaining their data and their lack of consistency makes their finding highly inaccurate. Don't get me wrong, its an awesome show but don't just swallow everything they show you as cold, hard truth.
@loujencece The reason the katana was used with very little force is because no amount of force will increase the strength of a katana's cut because katanas are very light and do not gain much momentum like European swords. In short, katanas were built to attack the lighter Japanese armor of the age, while European broadswords and bastard swords were built to pierce much greater armor. Should the two collide, I'm sure a European bastard sword would decimate a katana.
@SolidSnakeRules Actually, I think that if a European sword and a katana collide, neither one would decimate the other. Why? b/c katanas are structurally built to be resilient and withstand shock (having a combo of soft and hard metals inside) but since they cut through japanese bamboo armour we can only rely on its potential based on structure. the European sword, u already touched upon. they are specifically built to hack away at steel armour. so i dont think one is better than the other
@ultimatedirtclod yeah agreed and you have to think about where the contrys are in japan the waether was warmer so they couldnt use as much armor in the wars so they didnt need as large weapons as in europe it was colder so they could use the heavyer armor and they would need to use stronge and heavy swords to be useful in wars
HAHA, everyone who comments praising the katana seems to be negged. Everyone here is just too proud to admit japanese swordsmanship and sword making has come further than european counterparts.
The japanese have made an engine for honda which has never experienced a breakdown that was caused by a design flaw. They are excellent at perfecting what they put their minds to.
I prefer japanese swordsmanship, I prefer English longbow archery and I see no problem with it.
He basically meant that the greatest warrior is he who avoids the actual conflict by either politics(words) or intimidation(sight), Something which all modern nations do too.
@Ashitaka1110 I don't hate america.. nor american people.. I hate your government. They say war is bad - they make wars, they want justice - they do right the opposite, they want free speech - but keep secrets from people etc. list goes on and on. American government is fucked up. Sad that one of the most powerful nations who should be an example to us all is one of the most corrupted nations as well =)
@Grcar57 Government officials of all countries lie and keep secrets from their people. Government officials of all countries are corrupt, not just America. The reason everyone says that America is the most corrupt is everything they do is publicized. In other countries, if a politician is shown to be corrupt, the person exposing is usually killed. Less so in America.
@DeathDealer2469 America represent modern day country = a country that should be an example. Instead, they blow up their own WTC, point their fingers on terrorist and declare war on innocent people. Best airforce on the planet and couldn't intercept a fukin plane? And then they dare to talk about justice. They are worse then nazis if you ask me. At least nazis didn't pretend to be the good guys. Don't try to defend them. I might think you are one of the brainwashed ones.
@Grcar57 Brainwashed? On the contrary. I am enlightened enough to realize they all lie. You are right, though America should set a good example for the rest of the world and they do not. I will not get into argument about the WTC incident.
To let you know, yes I am an American. I love my country - I fear my government. America is a beautiful country. Mountains, plains, even a rainforest or two. I am afraid what my government will do to it and the people.
@Grcar57 As far as the Nazis are concerned - yes they led the German people to believe they were the good guys. But, I will not argue Nazi Germany either. Please, if you know the perfect government, tell me. I would be more than happy to relocate there. Let's just agree that they all lie and we all need to watch our collective backs.
@DeathDealer2469 If we get rid of money then we get the perfect government = sadly none yet. If rats invade your home, you don't just leave and relocate.. you deal with them ^^ And if more ppl become enlightened as you are, we just may have a fighting chance. Happy new year =)
@Grcar57 You are absolutely correct about the rats, unfortunately, America is also a land of Big Talkers. People need to actually band together and stand up for what is right. I cannot do everything myself. I am adding an excript from our Decaration of Independence that people need to take seriously and actually do something to bring about change.
@Grcar57 Here is an excript from our Declaration Of Independence: But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.
@DeathDealer2469 unfortunately, not many know Declaration Of Independence as well as you do. But first they need to actually realize how deep they have fallen, get out of the hole, and see the world around them with different eyes. And maybe then.. we will have a revolution <3. Good luck
@Grcar57 we've never "made" a war; we've been attacked, and in turn defender ourselves. But I understand it's the popular thing for all the people from little European nations to go "dur hur, Americans are stupid, dur hur, down with capitalism, dur!!!" all over Youtube from the safety of the computer because their local media has told them that the American government is an evil bully and they've bought it without hesitation.
@Wallu1991 No, that's not what he meant. He literally meant to say that you should use your surroundings and blind your opponent with the sun. He was referencing the duel between Miyamoto Musashi and Sasaki Kojiro in 1612, in which it's purported that Musashi wielded a wooden oar rather than a sword and defeated Kojiro by blinding him with the sun.
@shanglondeiti most of japonese samurais was pro in jiu jitsu and aikido... the greatest samurais like Mussaishi or Sassaki Kojiro was completely able to kill another warrior without a katana...
@shanglondeiti Well, no. That's the best conflict resolution, or best diplomat. While it may be the best way to solve a conflict, the word "warrior" in itself implies someone versed in warfare. That being said, the best warrior is someone who wages war effectively.
Notice anything familiar about that? Like perhaps the United States Secret Service. Created to be bodyguards. Then charged with protecting currency and counterfeiting then into full blown federal agents of authority and powers of arrest and law enforcement. Just food for thought.
katana and sword was the old weapon... today we use gun and respect the old weapon(the katana and sword) but in the future maybe we use laser gun or something looks like star wars weapon and we respect those old gun...
just can't think why ppl compare a katana/sword with gun? there born in diffrent time and use for diffrent purposes
in the far future people will have developed technology to the point that we will stop or slow down time with machines.
Then the gun and sword will become obsolete. And pretty much everyone is going to be fucked. Because how can you fight someone who can stop time? Everyone who fights the guy with that technology would be killed instantly.
what do you mean? what is the Japanese word they use for Himura Kenshin's "Reversed Edge" blade? if that's what you want to know, they call it a Sakabato, if you're asking for what "pet name" he refers to his blade, the answer is none, he simply refers to his blade as the Sakabato, or the "reversed edge" blade
lol @ the comparison @ 4:47. You can clearly see how the katana is superior to the broad sword, as the katana was on the third cut before the broadsword was even finished its second... and the broadsword wielder lost his balance on the cut.
Difficult to tell in these kind of comparisons. The skill of the wielder outweigh the properties of the blade. Katana are sharper on microscopic level and the distribution of balance is slightly different (and no, they are not that much lighter) but all these aspects are taken into account by an experienced wielder.
the katana is superior in speed, and flexibility, as well as its higher difficulty of preparation, and composition. broadswords are geared more for power.
Not at all. Katanas weigh in the same range as Medieval European swords, theres no speed advantage. Also Katanas tend to have rather stiff blades, in fact European swords often have a greater degree of flexibility due to being tempered rather than simply quench hardened and having greater distal taper (ie they get thinner towards the point). Also Medieval European swords weren't 'geared for power' any more than Katanas, European fencing styles were fluid and elegant.
the katana is much faster than a broadsword. the weight difference is incredible, because of the lack of weight of a katana you are able to swing the blade much quicker and efficiently than a broadsword.
Well not there is no weight difference. Check out my comments below as to why this video is a flawed comparison, but generally European swords weigh between 2-3.5lbs, Katanas tend to weigh between 2-3.5lbs. Not only that but European swords are often lighter per inch than Katanas ie there are European swords that are longer than Katanas, yet weigh the same. In both Japan and Europe an optimum weight for a sword was reached independantly.
that is compete BULLSHIT. mideval swords were never lighter. do not post ignorant comments. the samurai sword is the most complex to create. DO NOT POST IGNORANT COMMENTS
I'm sorry but its not bullshit its fact. European and Japanese swords tend to weigh the same. I don't understand what you find so offensive about this fact. Also Katanas are not the most complex to make either, pattern welded sword blade are far more complex. Perhaps you should do some research beyond Anime and the Discovery channel before you throw about accusations of ignorance ;-)
you have absolutely no idea of what you speak, look up any image of a medieval sword, katanas have an extreme difference, as well as two completely different steel types. it is apparent that you lack the knowledge to back up your claim, please do us all a favor, and do some research. with the exception of french sabers, (which were not in medieval times) katanas are far faster and lighter than any of those swords. please research before replying self righteously, and ignorantly.
Are you for serious or just trolling?! I'm by no means an expert but I'd bet good money that I know more than you do. Katanas and Medieval European swords tend to wiegh the same and if you want some back up how about this from the ARMA website: 'As leading sword expert Ewart Oakeshott unequivocally stated: "Medieval Swords are neither unwieldably heavy nor all alike - the average weight of any one of normal size is between 2.5 lb. and 3.5 lbs' Whats the average weight range for a Katana?
i actually read some articles from that website, and they are interesting, but the bias is apparent, i read a article on knight versus samurai. it started out respectable, but i began to doubt as the author continued to ramble about the knight. pros and cons for the samurai. but no cons for the knight. it was sort of sad. but i agree, there probably was swords forged lighter. as i am sure some samurai swords were heavier, but overall, generic katana versus generic longsword, katana is faster
I wouldn't agree that the Katana is a superior weapon. Its optimised for the cut at the expense of thrusting ability. Its method of construction leaves a brittle edge which chips easily if used improperly and its untempered blade makes is more likely to take a set if bent too far. I wouldn't argue that either sword was 'superior' or 'better', they simply demonstrate different design approaches to the same problem of cutting/stabbing. Certainly, I wouldn't draw conclusions from this video.
Both of these videos use accurate reproductions in terms if weight and balance. In the first one you can even see that fast cuts from the draw are capable with a European sword and scabbard. No wild swings and no evidence of using 'brute strength'.
what about when your oponent is wearing full plate armour the edge of the blade won't cut plate armour but the point will pierce or slip between plates thus getting through the armour when this is the case you have to "beat" someone with the sword using "brute force" to weaken or knock aside their defenses to get a successful thrust in to kill the opponent
Setting aside and oponents weapon requires more leverage than brute strength. The standard practice when fighting an armoured enemy was to 'half-sword' that is gripping the hilt with your right hand and the blade with your left. This gives you greater leverage and control over the point. Alternatively you could turn the sword around grip the blade and use the cross to hook away your foe's weapon or even trip him up. Check this video here:
i know what half swording is you could also use it to hit someone in the head with the pommel but if you hit their armour it won't go through (neither will a katana) but it will transmit the shock and could still possibly break a bone. more force=more shock common logic but i'm not saying you can't cut with them you can cleave of three heads with a claymore but with an armoured oponent a harder hit can also knock them off balance and if they fall over you can impale them
You're right, mrbeast. It's clear that the producers of this program purposely denigrate European swords - comparing a 50" broadsword against a 40" katana, then blabbing about how much slower it is. The two swords were used in different ways, so they're comparing apples to oranges. The viking sword is a better comparison: it's similar in length and weight to the katana, had *two* edges, a sharp point, and a knuckle on the pommel that could be used for punching.
The chap using the Euro sword has terrible technique, hes either being deliberately clumbsy or he has no idea how to wield his weapon. For example after his first cut he inexplicably fumbles into a two handed grip when hes using a single handed sword. In my opinion hes deliberately clumbsy, even with his overwieght sword there would be no need for his over exaggerated movements and poor balance; he almost swings himself off his feet!
In fact earlier Samurai valued the bow and spear above the sword as they were more effective battlefield weapons. European swords have never relied on 'brute strength', they relied as much on speed, agility and skill as the Katana. The European sword used in this video isn't an accurate replica of a medieval sword. Its made by an Italian company called Del Tin (DT2140 to be exact) It weighs nearly 3.5lb which is too heavy for a sword of its kind, so the tool being used is incorrect to begin with
First point there is no such thing as a 'broadsword' in a Medieval context. The sword featured here is an 'Arming' sword. Secondly I would take anything shown in this video with a pinch of salt. Its inaccurate, biased and full of ridiculous hype. For example they show a man in mid/late 15th Century plate armour wielding a sword that belongs to the early 14th Century. At the begining of the first part it states that the Katana dominated the battlefield this is also wrong, the Yari and bow did.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I think you will find that bows and spears were very common on European battlefields too. Also the Japanese imported and copied European armour to an extent. If It was unsuited to the Japanese battlefield why would they bother? Also plate armour is reliable protection against arrows.
Do you have a source for that? I doubt a full Samurai harness would weigh just 30lbs. And I'm certainly not underestimating the Samurai. I just don't buy into the hype and nonsense that they were somehow the 'greatest warriors in history' or neat little 'rock, paper, scissors' conclusions about who would win in a duel. Neither has a decisive advantage.
You will know that you do terrible misunderstanding if you can decode a Japanese site.
The Tosei-Gusoku was lightweighted a more than Western helmet and body armor. And, as for the arm part and the bent, it is sewed byrnie and a lightweight plate on cloth.
Pls see Japanese site of "Tosei - Gusoku" in my profile.
I translate the lower part of the Japanese site that I showed.
"Q: How much is weight of Japanese armor?
A: As for the weight, depend on various of armor. >O-yoroi=It is about around 25kg. >DO-Maru armor or Haramaki Armor was about around 20kg. >ToseiGusoku armor of the photograph left,is about 13kg.
A samurai with a katana most likely would beat a knight with armor and a broadsword the fact iss that the samurai will; be parrying and avoiding his rather than sustain them and the armor of a knight has many opening where the armpits are for example and even a small opening would do the trick now for the knight its very hard to hit a samurai and even if he did the armor of a samurai is indeed very durable in the end the decisive point is the samurais dexterity
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Why would a Samurai be any faster than a Knight or have greater 'dexterity'? Both Samurai and European armours weighed about the same. European armour offered excellent protection while also allowing an excellent freedom of movement. Also the armpits would be protected by chain mail which you cant cut through with a sword. The fact is that, on paper, neither has a decisive advantage.
it true that in the end the difference of a samurai with a knight is not big but the samurai has more polished technique i mean there entire lifestyle followed the warrior's code and they were fare more disciplined
are you joking - middle age european knights were full armoured, katana is too light to do something by hitting armour , and asian samurais were with clothes (almost without armour) armored european will win, katana is good for slicing and broadsword for smashing
unless the samurai slides the tip in to the gaps in te armor i mean a fully armored knight will not be fast just strong the samurai will be fast and strong and will get out of view of the knight since the helm will constick the view and the smaari will then kill the knight easaly
European swords are heavy and meant for brute force. The Katana is light and proven to withstand any blade thrown at it.
brianthao102 2 months ago
@brianthao102
Wrong on both accounts, buddy.
A. All European swords were made with grace and finesse in mind. None were made to be used with "brute strength", as you describe it. It's just an urban myth.
B. All swords, Katana included, are vulnerable to strikes received on the edge. It literally destroys your blade. Proof:

1. Born and raised in America
2. The Samurai way of Fighting is way different than the Europeans would fight, the Japanese would be One cut One Kill and Withdraw.

They are, yes, Masters from XIV - XV century, but that doesn't mean that before them they didn't have an specific technique to use single or two handed swords. We do not have any manuscript to tell that (the absence of evidence is not the evidence of absence). Japan is another thing.
Joseph2010MK 7 months ago
Comparing a medieval sword SINGLE handed sword VS a Katana (two handed) is unfair and anachronistic. They are from completely different continents, with completely different needs. In Europe, the knights had Mail Armor (then Plate Armor), and generally fighting on a horse. In order to cut mail, you need a fair amount of blade presence and, when riding a horse, good reach (from 32 to 37 inches of blade). They do not rely on brutal strength at all (search for Talhoffer and Fiore de Liberi)

If I'm going to battle and is asked to choose among bringing a Japanese sword or a European sword or a middle eastern sword(it has to be my own sword), I'll choose the European sword or the middle eastern sword. The reason is that the Japanese sword is just too beautiful, and I can't bare to see it being damaged in battle.
harrison28514 11 months ago 11
@harrison28514 You are so wrong, it can be seen that you haven't been paying attention to what they are saying, the Katana is so well made and so perfect that you can not even make a dent when fighting against another sword. is the best sword in the history of the world, beauty and lethal. You must be from the USA.
Ayatanoaqui 8 months ago

Railriderchris 8 months ago
@harrison28514 Nihontos truly are beautiful. And yes they'll be damaged in battle. But if you know how to use them (parry with the flat aso...) they will endure a longer time before being useless.
As for the Katana being more beautiful: That's of course a matter of taste, but when you look at good reproductions and not the bad ones of movies and co, there are amazing european swords too:
watch?v=xIyabBglQfA
Aren't they good-looking? The amazing balance, how light and manoeuverable they are? ;-)

@harrison28514 The Japanese Swords are very hard, they would not be damaged, additionally, if you die, you have a sword to be damaged; you'll be dead.

You need to understand the difference between hardness and tensile strength, because they're not the same.
For example, your ordinary glass is pretty goddamn hard - takes some specialised tools to even put a scratch on the surface.
But no one makes any support structures out of it, because it lack tensile strength - it's brittle, in other words.
Same with the Katana - it's bloody hard, I'll give you that, but it lacks tensile strength...

The Katana is among best all-rounder blades in history, it's just a victim of it's own success; idiots everywhere claim that it can stop bullets and shoot lightning bolts so it's gained a certain stigma. The Katana is one of the greatest blades of all time, but it's still nothing more than a blade.

on the test cut with the straw, the man weilding the broadsword had to swing with brute force whereas the on wielding the Katana used very little force to cut through that was the subtle difference between the two.
loujencece 1 year ago
@loujencece Well, first off, if you were going to compare a katana to anything it would be the bastard sword which emerged as the top tactical sword for war in the medieval age over the standard broadsword and shield.
As for cutting through straw: The reason the straw did not cut was because the katana was sharper, not because it was superior. A human body will not sway like straw, it will resist more and thus will be cut. Katanas cannot slice through full plate armor and chainmaille.

SolidSnakeRules 1 year ago
@loujencece dude. i wouldn't rely too much on that show. its built around entertainment and not scientific reliability. even if they have figures to show, it doesn't mean they're right. especially since their methods of obtaining their data and their lack of consistency makes their finding highly inaccurate. Don't get me wrong, its an awesome show but don't just swallow everything they show you as cold, hard truth.
ultimatedirtclod 1 year ago
@loujencece The reason the katana was used with very little force is because no amount of force will increase the strength of a katana's cut because katanas are very light and do not gain much momentum like European swords. In short, katanas were built to attack the lighter Japanese armor of the age, while European broadswords and bastard swords were built to pierce much greater armor. Should the two collide, I'm sure a European bastard sword would decimate a katana.
SolidSnakeRules 1 year ago
@SolidSnakeRules Actually, I think that if a European sword and a katana collide, neither one would decimate the other. Why? b/c katanas are structurally built to be resilient and withstand shock (having a combo of soft and hard metals inside) but since they cut through japanese bamboo armour we can only rely on its potential based on structure. the European sword, u already touched upon. they are specifically built to hack away at steel armour. so i dont think one is better than the other
ultimatedirtclod 1 year ago
@ultimatedirtclod yeah agreed and you have to think about where the contrys are in japan the waether was warmer so they couldnt use as much armor in the wars so they didnt need as large weapons as in europe it was colder so they could use the heavyer armor and they would need to use stronge and heavy swords to be useful in wars

DeathDealer2469 1 year ago

Grcar57 1 year ago
@Grcar57 You are absolutely correct about the rats, unfortunately, America is also a land of Big Talkers. People need to actually band together and stand up for what is right. I cannot do everything myself. I am adding an excript from our Decaration of Independence that people need to take seriously and actually do something to bring about change.
DeathDealer2469 1 year ago
@Grcar57 Here is an excript from our Declaration Of Independence: But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.
DeathDealer2469 1 year ago
@DeathDealer2469 unfortunately, not many know Declaration Of Independence as well as you do. But first they need to actually realize how deep they have fallen, get out of the hole, and see the world around them with different eyes. And maybe then.. we will have a revolution <3. Good luck
Grcar57 1 year ago
@Grcar57 we've never "made" a war; we've been attacked, and in turn defender ourselves. But I understand it's the popular thing for all the people from little European nations to go "dur hur, Americans are stupid, dur hur, down with capitalism, dur!!!" all over Youtube from the safety of the computer because their local media has told them that the American government is an evil bully and they've bought it without hesitation.
Ashitaka1110 11 months ago
@Wallu1991 No, that's not what he meant. He literally meant to say that you should use your surroundings and blind your opponent with the sun. He was referencing the duel between Miyamoto Musashi and Sasaki Kojiro in 1612, in which it's purported that Musashi wielded a wooden oar rather than a sword and defeated Kojiro by blinding him with the sun.

CarboneraCarlos 2 years ago
lol @ the comparison @ 4:47. You can clearly see how the katana is superior to the broad sword, as the katana was on the third cut before the broadsword was even finished its second... and the broadsword wielder lost his balance on the cut.
teknotoast 2 years ago 2
Difficult to tell in these kind of comparisons. The skill of the wielder outweigh the properties of the blade. Katana are sharper on microscopic level and the distribution of balance is slightly different (and no, they are not that much lighter) but all these aspects are taken into account by an experienced wielder.

the katana is superior in speed, and flexibility, as well as its higher difficulty of preparation, and composition. broadswords are geared more for power.
0asis99 2 years ago 4
Also Medieval European swords weren't 'geared for power' any more than Katanas, European fencing styles were fluid and elegant.
mrbeast85 2 years ago
the katana is much faster than a broadsword. the weight difference is incredible, because of the lack of weight of a katana you are able to swing the blade much quicker and efficiently than a broadsword.
bmxiscore 2 years ago
Well not there is no weight difference. Check out my comments below as to why this video is a flawed comparison, but generally European swords weigh between 2-3.5lbs, Katanas tend to weigh between 2-3.5lbs. Not only that but European swords are often lighter per inch than Katanas ie there are European swords that are longer than Katanas, yet weigh the same. In both Japan and Europe an optimum weight for a sword was reached independantly.
mrbeast85 2 years ago
that is compete BULLSHIT. mideval swords were never lighter. do not post ignorant comments. the samurai sword is the most complex to create. DO NOT POST IGNORANT COMMENTS
0asis99 2 years ago
I'm sorry but its not bullshit its fact. European and Japanese swords tend to weigh the same. I don't understand what you find so offensive about this fact. Also Katanas are not the most complex to make either, pattern welded sword blade are far more complex. Perhaps you should do some research beyond Anime and the Discovery channel before you throw about accusations of ignorance ;-)
mrbeast85 2 years ago
you have absolutely no idea of what you speak, look up any image of a medieval sword, katanas have an extreme difference, as well as two completely different steel types. it is apparent that you lack the knowledge to back up your claim, please do us all a favor, and do some research. with the exception of french sabers, (which were not in medieval times) katanas are far faster and lighter than any of those swords. please research before replying self righteously, and ignorantly.
0asis99 2 years ago 3
Are you for serious or just trolling?! I'm by no means an expert but I'd bet good money that I know more than you do. Katanas and Medieval European swords tend to wiegh the same and if you want some back up how about this from the ARMA website: 'As leading sword expert Ewart Oakeshott unequivocally stated: "Medieval Swords are neither unwieldably heavy nor all alike - the average weight of any one of normal size is between 2.5 lb. and 3.5 lbs' Whats the average weight range for a Katana?
mrbeast85 2 years ago
i actually read some articles from that website, and they are interesting, but the bias is apparent, i read a article on knight versus samurai. it started out respectable, but i began to doubt as the author continued to ramble about the knight. pros and cons for the samurai. but no cons for the knight. it was sort of sad. but i agree, there probably was swords forged lighter. as i am sure some samurai swords were heavier, but overall, generic katana versus generic longsword, katana is faster
0asis99 2 years ago
ive weilded both and i gotta say yes, the longsword is a bit heavier but as to which is faster? its the same... its all about balance!

WERTY123 2 years ago
I wouldn't agree that the Katana is a superior weapon. Its optimised for the cut at the expense of thrusting ability. Its method of construction leaves a brittle edge which chips easily if used improperly and its untempered blade makes is more likely to take a set if bent too far. I wouldn't argue that either sword was 'superior' or 'better', they simply demonstrate different design approaches to the same problem of cutting/stabbing. Certainly, I wouldn't draw conclusions from this video.
mrbeast85 2 years ago
Take a look at these videos here:
watch?v=9e6x5J7nrKE&feature=related
watch?v=_VkIIj-kyvQ&feature=channel
Both of these videos use accurate reproductions in terms if weight and balance. In the first one you can even see that fast cuts from the draw are capable with a European sword and scabbard. No wild swings and no evidence of using 'brute strength'.
mrbeast85 2 years ago
what about when your oponent is wearing full plate armour the edge of the blade won't cut plate armour but the point will pierce or slip between plates thus getting through the armour when this is the case you have to "beat" someone with the sword using "brute force" to weaken or knock aside their defenses to get a successful thrust in to kill the opponent
aerodynamicband 2 years ago
Setting aside and oponents weapon requires more leverage than brute strength. The standard practice when fighting an armoured enemy was to 'half-sword' that is gripping the hilt with your right hand and the blade with your left. This gives you greater leverage and control over the point. Alternatively you could turn the sword around grip the blade and use the cross to hook away your foe's weapon or even trip him up. Check this video here:
watch?v=ZnqOMbFDEAI
mrbeast85 2 years ago
i know what half swording is you could also use it to hit someone in the head with the pommel but if you hit their armour it won't go through (neither will a katana) but it will transmit the shock and could still possibly break a bone. more force=more shock common logic but i'm not saying you can't cut with them you can cleave of three heads with a claymore but with an armoured oponent a harder hit can also knock them off balance and if they fall over you can impale them
aerodynamicband 2 years ago
You're right, mrbeast. It's clear that the producers of this program purposely denigrate European swords - comparing a 50" broadsword against a 40" katana, then blabbing about how much slower it is. The two swords were used in different ways, so they're comparing apples to oranges. The viking sword is a better comparison: it's similar in length and weight to the katana, had *two* edges, a sharp point, and a knuckle on the pommel that could be used for punching.
citizenfitz 1 year ago
@citizenfitz true, but was usually crappier steel and would get a huge chip outta the blade if it came in contact with said katana.
samindigo2 1 year ago

At the begining of the first part it states that the Katana dominated the battlefield this is also wrong, the Yari and bow did.

samurai armor and the knight armor wasn't the same weight.
O-Yoroi is heavy like the armor of the knight, However, "Tosei-Gusoku" of the Sengoku Jidai is half weight.
O-yoroi was an armor for cavalry of the 12 century.
"Tosei-Gusoku" was an armor of the time in the 16th century when a cavalry went out of fashion.
A helmet and body-armor were solid so as to prevent a matchlock, but hand and leg joint part was lightweight.

This misunderstanding comes from confusion of O-yoroi and Tosei - Gusoku.
However, some people let you confuse it intentionally to let you underestimate Samurai.
O-yoroi=20~30Kg
Tosei-Gusoku=12~15kg

The winner will turn into a samurai and the knight with environment and the situation and a personal ability.
I do not think that a knight of full plate Armour can play an active part enough in a Japanese battlefield.
In the first place Katana was a supporting weapon.
The main weapon of the samurai of the battlefield is Yumi and Yari and a metal rod.
Yari and Yumi easily penetrate an iron plate.
In addition, Yari was useful as the weapon which beat an armor-clad warrior.

The fact is that, on paper, neither has a decisive advantage.

it true that in the end the difference of a samurai with a knight is not big but the samurai has more polished technique i mean there entire lifestyle followed the warrior's code and they were fare more disciplined
jimdemertzim1 2 years ago
are you joking - middle age european knights were full armoured, katana is too light to do something by hitting armour , and asian samurais were with clothes (almost without armour) armored european will win, katana is good for slicing and broadsword for smashing

unless the samurai slides the tip in to the gaps in te armor i mean a fully armored knight will not be fast just strong the samurai will be fast and strong and will get out of view of the knight since the helm will constick the view and the smaari will then kill the knight easaly
