Lmao this is one of my favourite clips on youtube. I love how they frown upon illegality "That would be against the Lawr!...I would be punished by the supreme court and rightly so!" *applause*
I always thought there was something brilliant about this, the script, the peformance, the way it's not a straight parody of American sitcoms, but mocks our perceptions of them, and the comedy of Fools and horses, and all with an awkward tension and self-conciousness that sits between the 2 shows.. I find myself randomly repeating lines from this all the time.. Ello Uncle Albert, Robot.. Nice Jubbly...
No one can really knock american comedy, yes they produce a lot of shite but there is an endless list of top quality intelligent comedy to come out of the US recently, curb your enthusiasm, arrested development, south park etc plus the state of the britsh sitcom is awful at the moment with odd exceptions. plus Rock profiles was funny, little britain is weak and i don't think you could call it intelligent comedy
I think this is more or less poking fun at American versions of British comedy formats which were sold to the US in the 60s and 70s.
For example, they took Steptoe & Son, set around a grandiose, vulgar, self-deluding rag & bone man and his disgusting, dirty, lecherous, unsanitary, vindictive father and turned it into Sanford & Son - a show about two normal black men.
Viz, "you dvirty old man" literally became "you old fool".
This is about ten times as funny than Little Britain, about 100 times less funny than Rock Profile, and about a thousand times less funny than Only Fools and Horses.
... you know, I'm really not xenophobic, all the Americans I've met have been decent, friendly and well-informed; I just wish they would sort out their entertainment media. All the might of Hollywood and all they can come up with are remakes of remakes and prequels and sequels and comic book rip-offs??? Don't get me going on PBS.
I looked it up. It was aired in a lot of countries but never Canada. Perhaps your country has the same tastes in TV as the yanks? Anyway - is it worth watching? Considering the fact that we regard it as a national institution and just about one of the finest comedies we've ever put on the box, i'd say yes! Don't get me wrong, it had it's moments, but it was usually first class. If you can track down a special called 'Jolly Boys' Outing' you won't get much better.
Fools & Horses is based aound the English working class ability to laugh & joke during tough times and in adversity, it doesn't translate to the US because the culture is different, therefore the humour doesn't work. English comedy is usually subtle and ironic, whereas American comedy is more obvious and sarcastic. No offence to the Yanks, but we are funnier by a looooong way!
they're not ''doing'' American comedy- , they're mocking it.... and I think they did quite well... and to add to that, the American version of The Office has been very successful and that was adapted from the original English one!
I think most remakes of sitcoms are a bad idea, though. To turn it around, lok no further than the British "Golden Girls", "Married with Children" or "Mad About You"...
I'm sure if the americans were to ever "remake" yet another English classic like Only Fools, the result would be as ridiculous (if not more so) than this.
Whenever they try to take British comedy, they always churn out a dumbass crapfest with overdone acting, crap jokes, too loud laughter tracks and drama drier than the sahara that only moronic trained seals would laugh at (and they do).
Just search for "Red Dwarf US Pilot" to see what I mean. They fucking embarrass themselves.
I know what you are getting at but you are generalising. The US versions of The Office, Til Death to Us Part and Steptoe and Son were ok. And look at the way we have screwed up some of their shows like the god awful UK versions of that 70s Show and The Golden Girls. Its swings and roundabouts really.
I haven't seen this for ten years, never forgot it tho. Shows how different the show would have been "americanized". Of course in the UK, the show is an institution!
It almost came close to it. The American's were planning to re-name the Trotters the Flannigans in a show called 'This Time Next Year' They were also going to make Grandad the lead character and have Del-Boy as a secondary characeter
Ugh. Don't get me wrong, this is an absolutely brilliant take on American sitcoms - unfortunately, it has made me realise that Americans should be banned from making television.
So it turns out Matt Smith really is a time traveller...

@captainfluoxetine Great news, thank you, really made my day.
As it is American it will obviously be superior, I just hope they have more "heartwarming" moments like when Del talks about his mother.

Nice try, but this isn't what the Americans would do to it.
They would put in fart and sex jokes, as well as replacing every insult with "gay" and "fag" since they are too dumb to come up with anything better.
