Hi, we are a band that are heavily influenced by the kinks! If you could please spare 2 seconds to listen to a band that are still trying to play real music then check us out at our channel.
@TheFacelessActivist This is one of the stupidist comments I've seen. 'I'm Swedish and even I'm not close enough.' Canadians are a lot closer to the English than the Swedes are, most Canadians being descended from Britons. In what way did Swedes invent England? The Normans 'invented' the England we have today. As far as I know, Sweden had no part in making England.
Really? Ever read any kind of history from the 1st-13th century? We colonized stuff all over the place. Founded places like Dublin, and also had great influence on Slavic nations, as well as England. We built settlements strewn across all Europe, and words such as "Window" and "Husband" are originally derived from Swedish.
Don't worry, though. I won't hold your remedial grasp of European history against you.
@TheFacelessActivist Yes, I have read some history from the 1st century to the 13th century. I'm certain the Swedes didn't found Dublin or influence England, that was probably the Norse. You say I have a remedial grasp of European history, though my knowledge of European history is probably better than yours.
@TheFacelessActivist To be fair, having studied the period in question, I'm pretty sure the majority of Scandinavians that arrived in England were Danes, followed by Norwegians. Not Swedes. Even then, the foundation of England as a unified kingdom had more to do with the West Saxons than the Scandinavians or Anglo-Scandinavians. Also, the 1st-13th century is far too wide a timeframe. More like 7th-11th.
Really now? Remind me again: Which year was Dublin founded? And is the Gaelic not a significant part of Great Britain?
And it was mixed Scandinavians, Danes, Swedes and Norwegians. To claim the Swedes didn't colonize is absolutely preposterous, since several English settlements and villages have Swedish names even in modern ages.
The graphic designer who created the cover for this album is Michael Horton and still available as a graphic designer. Although I haven't met Michael yet and only spoke with him on the phone, he is a very pleasant chap and the cover he created for the Kinks and many other famous bands is phenomenol.
With the Kinks it has always been interesting to seperate satire from their true feelings. "Tounge in cheek" may be the message, or not. That is why I am a fan. Although making a joke of things assosiated with "the village green", he strikes me as very UK nationalist...as in we aknowledge change, but not at the challenge of what english means. I can like his music without being pro-UK...:)
@cuteduckies254 I'll take "God save the George Cross, and all those who were awarded 'em", but mainly because it's used as a a rhyme for "consortium". Brilliant songwriting, Mr Davies.
@middleC17 As long as you pipe this album through your speakers 24/7, I'm sure your residents will be rockin' through their later years. It would be ironic, because that's also the name of the album.
It's supposed to be lamenting about old English virtues and values (especially the traditional village green) and the good old cartoons and English literature - something that has been increasingly destroyed in the last 30 years.
Today, it takes the form of a sad song - how far England has fallen from what is was before.
@Olamtir no way you mad man, it's lampooning middle English values, you can't seriously think they want 'god' to save all this shit, 'office block persecution affinity' and 'virginity' are dead giveaways.
'Office Block Persecution' - they don't like office blocks.
'God save little shops, china cups and virginity' - Little shops have been replaced by Tesco, China cups by plastic and virginity by promiscuity at 11.
They're lamenting over the loss of English values...
I liked The Kinks before Hot Fuzz, but I think awesome people found this song because of the movie. With all the complaining retro fans do about the state of new music, you think most of us would be thrilled when new people discover the classics (regardless of how they found them).
I had no idea that people were discovering the kinks through that movie, i've always just assumed they were a band everyone knew like the beatles or something! but that is cool :)
Did anyone else get here via Jam and Jerusalem? The music for that show is a cover of this by Kate Rusby. (Jam and Jerusalem is called 'Clatterford' in North America.)
Does it matter why you are watching, it's awesome, and you're watching it so that's all that matters. By the way, this is definitely the soundtrack to todays beautiful summer day
@Loganberrybunny Good cause I'm in my mid 20's and definitely love them more then those common bugs. Along with Terry Reid ! The man that could have been Robert Plant but isn't...and still rocking it !
Thumbs up if you knew of the Kinks but not their songs, and gradually found out that all the songs you loved were by the Kinks, and they you hear it again in Hot Fuzz but only just found out it was The Kinks.
I will add, that yes, it is obviously about England, but he has said previously that SF is home spiritually for him, and VGPS can be relevant not only throughout England but in San Francisco and elsewhere
thumbs up if youre an American like me (from SF Bay Area) who never saw Hot Fuzz and didnt care because I loved this album when I was one of only 25,000 people who had this album for decades before you Brits realized it was a masterpiece. Ray said in his recent bio Imaginary Man he wrote this album with us folks in San Franicisco in mind because he's in tune with us and wanted us to have something more than hippies playing 25 minute guitar solos...honestly! check out Ray Davies Bio part 5
@kinksboss1 this is just one song out of thousands of masterpieces that are common knowledge to British people... films like hot fuzz jog our memories to the songs we've grown up listening to but which have been pushed to one side by the untold millions of factory standard shit america pumps out ringing in our ears.
@automaterialism I dont disagree about the mainstream shit being pumped out here in the 20th century, it is indeed garbage with some notable exceptions, but dont forget what country invented rock and roll. And what makes me grumpy? I saw bits of Hot Fuzz, and it was no Monty Python as far as great humor goes. Did you watch Ray Davies Bio 5 on YT, about 3 minutes in? He said he also had SF in mind when he made VGPS. Why do have to be so crass and ingnorant?

But what I said is the ALBUM of VGPS speaks directlly to places like San Francisco Bay Area, and I am proud to be an owner and fan of this album since my older brother brought it back from a used record store at UC Berkeley in the 70's
@BeLiketheSquerrl you should be thanking Hot Fuzz, why is it bad that a modern film is embracing a good song? We have to find songs from somewhere, thank you Hot Fuzz.

no way. I had no idea this was one of ray's songs, untill i was reading the notes in his new album, ray davies and friends. the version i always here on rad 2 is sung by a female vocalist. its a bit more folksounding, suits the song, covers for me usally ruin the song. love the kinks.
@MrTillyayre and if you listen carefully you stupid boy, youll here that this is where the theme tune for the cricket comes from. how very apt. i could be back in kent on a sunday avo on the village green in leigh. happy days.

Charlie Watts and Mick Avory were both jazz drummers who played with rock bands. Matter of fact, Mick Avory was considered by the Stones for the position with their band and played a few gigs with them in 1962 or '63 before the Stones hired Watts.

no way. I had no idea this was one of ray's songs, untill i was reading the notes in his new album, ray davies and friends. the version i always here on rad 2 is sung by a female vocalist. its a bit more folksounding, suits the song, covers for me usally ruin the song. love the kinks.

Charlie Watts and Mick Avory were both jazz drummers who played with rock bands. Matter of fact, Mick Avory was considered by the Stones for the position with their band and played a few gigs with them in 1962 or '63 before the Stones hired Watts.
