@azeller09 I wouldn't look into these kinds of headphones for strictly gaming use. Go with a headsett that is more suited for positional sound and such. If you are getting a sound card and/or a DAC and/or an amplifier they are really great for just about everything.
@azeller09 I think they're pretty excellent. Great soundstage and positioning, detail, and sweet deep bass. Also, they have pretty good isolation. They make a more expensive version with a boom mic and USB interface called the MMX300.

@FreshBeatz321 you have an interface for recording, which isn't a dedicated DAC. I would suggest a fiio e7 off of amazon/ebay for $99. It has a dedicated DAC, and an amp. It also attaches to an e9. It is small like an ipod and portable, and your really not going to get a decent desktop amp unless you spend more, but for 100 bucks, i think this is one of the best you can buy.

@TalmidimAlex Don't use headphones like this at the gym, you might try using waterproof in-ear headphones. These headphones will damage with water or sweat, not to mention how nasty the ear-cushions will get.
The higher impedance versions need to be driven by a higher voltage in order to achieve the same SPL, but they draw less current. Hence, they do not require higher power.

Are These Headphones Good For Ideally Mixing And Mastering Songs, Because I'm A Musician And I Want To Find A Monitoring Headphones That Will Give Me A Natural Sound So When I Mix A Track With These Headphones The Mix Will Sound The Same On All Devices. Also, Is A "M-Audio Fast Track MKII" A Good Amp For These Headphones?
@Lithium2600 I had the m50s for two weeks but had to take'em back because something was moving inside and making noise, and since they were not in stock i took the 330 pro, i have only used the for like two hours but right now i can say that this are way more comfortable than the m50s and have more bass but they are not portable at all and they have those two little cables that seem pretty weak and breakable, so what do you want? portability or comfort?
@licandres01 I actually bought the m50's. The sound is just great! and i don't know why people say they aren't comfortable, personally i find them much more comfortable than beats studios, and only slightly less comfortable than bose quiet comforts.
The one tiny thing i dislike about them is that my ears get a bit hot after an hour and an hour and a half or so of listening to them- but that's to be expected with over ear closed headphones.
Ah yeah i feel ya, the headband doesn't hurt my head - but it does to my sister when she tried them on. I think im just lucky they fit my head perfectly, its like they were made for me!
I searched quite a bit before I settled on the 80ohm version of those. I *loved* them, but the left driver has static now, and I think it's because a friend of mine borrowed them without my permission and blew out the driver with a low-quality or under-powered laptop's sound card. That doesn't really seem likely to me, but I can't think of what else could've happened.
Otherwise, I agree with sefs85 100%. And yes, the 80ohm version has a straight cord. I'd prefer the coiled cord, though...
how tight does these sit on the head? i need headphones that block out 28db or more and have monitors so that i can litsen to a click track. they need to be tight, i dont want to lose them while headbanging when playing drums!
@SimenNaess dt770 M sounds like it would be for you. It's designed for drums. see amazon.com/Beyerdynamic-770-Monitoring-Headphones-Drummers/dp/B000F4KWQI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1321870703&sr=8-1
Thank you for your video. I have a DT-990 Pros 250 ohm model, and probably I will sell them and buy a DT-770 80 ohm model. Open and high-impedance headphones are definitely not for street use.
@dafasainengades definitely yes. The sound and build quality is definitely better than ATH-M50. However, Audio Technica did a great job with their M50s, so they are highly competitive and very good too.
...to put it bluntly, flat headphones are not at all complimentary to a mix and the only reason anyone has use for them is critical listening when adjusting tonal balance. Some "dj's" do their research and somehow think that applies to them, but if by "dj" you are one who play's back music at a live venue, sorry, this is not you. This kind of dj needs headphones that are ergonomic, lightweight, good sound isolation, and produce a mix that cuts through the noise, ie. COLORED headphones.
...by djing do you mean that you are actually a working professional dj? or you just like to think of yourself as a dj because you bought yourself a Pioneer cdj?
80's go louder, 250's sound better (at least when properly amped) is the simple fact.
Having said that, why would a dj want to monitor with these?
Why not something that all the other dj wannabe geeks will think you are real cool with, like the Pioneer HDJ-2000?
@evilsnakes1 You sound so sour and hostile. I just asked a simple question. I think you should worry about yourself more than what "dj wannabe geeks" do.
@evilsnakes1 All your questions where rhetorical, you moron. I'm sure you're the greatest coolest most unique Dj ever. Hopefully you'll make it big and eventually get out of your mom's basement.
...my questions were not rhetorical and i never claimed to be a dj. you did. but i DO know my headphones so don't get your back all up, just take what I have to say straight up and thank me later
if you actually are a dj then these are not the headphones for you. something like the pioneer dj2000's (do NOT get the 1000's, they break easy and beware of fakes) has swivel cups, a replaceable cable and best of all, stereo/mono switching.
and excuse my realism, if youre a dj, get dj headphones that all the other djs and dj wannabe's will think are cool. Don't get the ones that will make people say "what'd you get those for"? You think people buy beats because they sound good? You think someone who buys beats will be happy with anything other than beats? I dont makes the rules, im just pointing out a simple truth.
ps. personally if i was a dj id get lightweight kit: beyer dt1350 or cheaper sennhesier hd25.
@evilsnakes1 dj's that use beats dont do proper mixing as there a commercially run product aiming at the kids and people with more money than sense, beats are not clear for mixing, way overpowered low end witch can cause mixes difficult. also i haven't seen 1 proper dj use them apart from hip hop djs and wanna b's like will.i.am. they might look good and sound good but for that money you can get headphones that are more true to the original sound than colouring it up with overdriven frequencies.
...cool but i dont know why you are telling me this. did you read my posts? i called them crap. i also did not recommend them for dj use i simply said some people want beats and those are the people who wont be happy with anything else. did you read which headphones i did recommend? i think you misunderstand the context of my point: I did not recommend beats for dj use (and NOT because they are colored because that is not an issue and dt770 are also base heavy).
...further, I think you are a little confused as to the use of flat reference monitors: it is imperative to have flat monitors when mixing, but do not convince yourself that crossfading is mixing. jeez. Unless you are affecting tonal balance (and i don't mean simply using a 3band eq on the final mix), there is no reason to get flat headphones and by far most dj's use colored headphones. Beats are poor dj headphones because of inadequate sound isolation, no other reason.
@evilsnakes1 i am far from confused, flat response is for monitoring in studio's or live events so what you produce will be replicated on other systems so stop the crap, am sorry but over the top coloured headphones for djing dont help you need a sensible amount of colouring around the mids and hi but more of an emphasis on the low end. am currently studing all this at university in studios that have equipment that would make you dribble so before coming back with the knowledge think first.

"over the top coloured headphones for djing dont help you need a sensible amount of colouring around the mids and hi but more of an emphasis on the low end"
...what does this even mean? you think coloring is only about mids/highs? once you've boosted the base you've colored the sound, and hd25's are base heavy. they are "fun" headphones. and they are used because they are ergonomic with exceptional background noise attenuation, not because they a flat. You see dj's using 840's?
...flat is going to help a dj crossfade between tracks? please explain how. I challenge you. Again, unless you are affecting tonal balance (POSSIBLY levels are at issue as well), translation is not a concern. The question is, if the cans are flat, what is going to change in a dj's workflow? nothing. Not unless they are actively mixing in a studio environment and affecting tonal balance.
If you rad my posts from the beginning you will see that I made solid recommendations....
...my point about the beats was not a recommendation for dj's: it was a general truism that headphones, like all things, are subject to the praise/ridicule of a fickle crowd, whether merited or not, so why buck the trend? 840's are great headphones, so why don't dj's use them as their primary kit? If you are a rap dj and beats are still the hot item of the moment, by all means use those silly things because style is more than half the battle (although I don't actually recommend them).
...and about your school: good for you. keep it up. maybe you'll make something of your music education and studio/kit and not end up a quitter/code monkey like me who keeps buying expensive kit and not doing anything with it other then noodling. Maybe you can share some of the work you have produced/cross-fased.
@evilsnakes1 further.... i am a dj and producer with my own studio, there is a reason why dj's tend to buy hd25's is that the frequencies are mostly flat apart from the low end boost and some trouble round the mids but there probably the less of the coloured cans on the market. the reply i did on your comment was on the understanding you liked beats for djing and i was making an opinion on there response and over colouring witch dont help djing. you need sensible frequencies with some colouring.
Well I couldn't wait. Bought the DT 770 Pro 80 Ohm model in Dubai for an over priced 800 AED (218 USD). These are my first full closed headphones since the early '90's. My Aiwa's Sound GT earphones still work! :-D
First thing to notice, they're very very light. Can't actually review them since I need to sort out my sources. First subjective impressions are positive. When listening to FLAC/MP3 content from the headphone output of the Creative Inspire T7700, with the Audigy 2 soundcard.
Hey not sure if you ever heard the ATH-M50 and might comment which might be a better headphone thinking towards bass...I am also thinking of purchasing a portable amp, the E11 all to be used though my itouch for recreational use ~ any comments/opinions/experiences??? Thanks -
@preludedragster I have the ATH M50s, and I was a little dissapointed with the bass. The next pair I am getting are the DT 770s. I would say go with the 770s, and use the E11 as your amp, but I am also getting the E11, so I can give you a better recommendation soon.
@SnifflyNose Thanks for the response!!! Since we're on the bass subject did you see that Audio Technica came out with two new bass headphones? The ATH-WS55 and the ATH-WS70(which I might pull the trigger on, just ding some final homework, its either going to be Japanese or German...) can you check out their specs and give me your opinion on the bass on those?!?! Thank you!!!
@preludedragster Those headphones are only available in Japan. I think they look too pricy for what they offer. I would just stick to the DT770s, and get the E11 amp. These headphones would be very hard to find in the states, and you would probably pay premium for them.
hey man nice review. im into recording and audio engineering and looking to buy a headphone amp 4 channel, do you have any advice on what a good one is???
I know all about resistance and ohms but im new to headphone amps.
@tedbad DT 880's compared to the DT 770's is the Closed End on the 770's and the Open Ends on the 880's. The dude at GuitarCenter said its not worth it to buy the 880's over the 770's unless you got the extra money. They both sound the same though.
thes headphones are not made for enjoying music..but to produse music...if u need headphones for ipon mp3 player etc. i recommend u buy something else..
"The difference between the 990s/880s/770s is quality..."
Actually the biggest difference between the 3 is the 770 is closed, the 880 is semi open and the 990 is open back. The 770 is for monitoring while recording.
"hey.. a friend of mine told me u cant use those headphones on a ipod touch, is it true? and if u can use it on a ipod does it sound good?"
I really want these headphones but i heard from many different people that after a few months they start buzzing and don't work anymore. Have you had any problems while owning them?
These are studio headphones for journalists etc. If you buy them for hifi or portable use you should know this. They can be used for that, of course, but that's not their primary purpose. The diffuse-field eq is especially suited for ENG work.
how to these work exactly? like if im tryna rap over a beat would it be immediate feed back into the headphones or would i not really hear myself? and how would u compare them to beats for the price
from what I understand, the higher Ohm headphones have lighter voice coils so they can respond quicker to musical changes. The 600ohm version has the lightest voicecoil of the three, but the tradeoff is it happens to be much harder to drive.
I Finally got these. In a short, i have tested it with a smartphone and you will definitely want to get an amp to get the full sound. You will get more bass and better response with a proper amp. A big warning to all who wants to buy this, the MIDS are recessed and so it will sound hollow. Highs are good/smooth, bass is not tight, it is loose but have good control. Bass goes down to around 35Hz, where 20Hz is there but dips. So it sounds like a small speaker w/ subwoofer, sound signature.
Think of the ohm resistance like a water drain. If you crank the drain up fully (Less resistance = low ohm = 80 ohm), the water comes out splashing into all direction... much "noise". Else (250 ohm) the water flows out smoothly. Though you don't get the same amount of water (Loudness of audio signal) ;-)
Hi there, I had the 80 ohm version of this cans for a little over a year now and ooohhhh man they're good, defently needs an amp if your gonna use it with portable players.So if anyone is thinkin' of gettin' this cans for portable use without an amp go for the 32 ohm version.
@sefs85 Hi i know this question was asked already but i do not understand. I am about to buy these off someone and they are the 250 ohm version and i want to use them for gaming. Will this be good? Or do i need anything extra to help with sound?
@LifeFitness420 They will be decent for gaming. 250 ohm will mean you will be able to plug them in to about anything. I would get the sehn hd 598 for gaming though instead.
It's good to see an intelligent person who clearly knows what he is talking about on you tube... this site is heavily polluted moron's... at last ! a really good review. thanks!
I've had the 80ohm ones for about 2 years now and they are really great. I love the bass. Its powerful but not overpowering. Despite the excellent build quality, mine are cracking a little bit at the slider. The part where the cups slide into the deadband is splitting, but the way they are designed, they still can't fall apart, even if the crack goes all the way through. I was looking for spare parts to fix this, but I might just make a new slider out of aluminum or something. Great review.
The difference between the 990s/880s/770s is quality. I have personally not used these, so I can't really offer a review. I like the DT770's because they are built well, have great sound quality, and get the job done without breaking the bank. As far as ohms, the higher level, the more power they will need to give you good sound level, but at the same time the less interference. My best advice is to find a store where you can try them out first hand. Good luck.
@JeemOfRunescape Yeah. I've used them through a grado headphone amp and also through my laptop's ministereo jack. Obviously its going to sound better through the amp, but it was acceptable to me through the laptop
Actually, no. If you bought the 250 ohm version and didn't use an amp you would get a, theoretically, less noisy signal, but at the same time, less powerful (dBs) sound.
Great review dude. You convinced me to buy these half a year ago, and I decided to watch this again knowing what they are like first hand. I too got the 250ohm version cause I was very curious to try amping headphones out, and I will never go back. They're really fantastic headphones, though they don't go so well with certain types of music. Personally, they really shine for metal/rock/hip-hop.
hi I bought a pair of 250ohm on ebay, they are being shipped, do I really really need to buy a headphone amp for them? I want to use them to hear some music on my iPhone and hear my electronic drum kit, do I need an amp? thanks
You don't need to buy an headphone amp to use these, it just makes full use of the headphone when you do. For your drum kit, it will most likely have enough power to work fine. I use my 250's on my iphone and feel they are sometimes underpowered. Give them a listen when you get them.
I find it isolates you from the outside world, and the outside world from you, very well. Now, there is always a higher limit to this, and if you have a good headphone amp, you can pump it over that threshold; but I have found it is very good at isolating.
True, but most of the Sony cans you see on the street are only bought by people who assume they must be good because they are Sony, and they don't spend much on them... (They just want the name)
I'm trying to get headsets to use when wife is sleeping for surround. Do these accomplish that type of listening or would i have to really go with a headset that is made for 5.1 surround?
These headphones would be great for that type of listening. The thing that makes it "5.1" is the receiver. The receiver must be "Dolby Headphones" compliant. Just search a "Dolby Headphones Demo" on YouTube and you can hear what it sounds like. You just have to be using a stereo set of headphones. The receiver will do all the processing to make it sound like surround sound.
i got noob headphones called xb500 lol I'm a headphone freak now

@licandres01 I actually bought the m50's. The sound is just great! and i don't know why people say they aren't comfortable, personally i find them much more comfortable than beats studios, and only slightly less comfortable than bose quiet comforts.
The one tiny thing i dislike about them is that my ears get a bit hot after an hour and an hour and a half or so of listening to them- but that's to be expected with over ear closed headphones.
Id give them a 9.5/10

@Lithium2600 yeah they are awesome, but the headband used to dig my skull pretty fast, 9.6 indeed

Im going to be using(if i get it) with fiio e10 or ibasso d zero. Which ones best for me? also, does ohms increase performance?
MultiJohnnyBravo 3 months ago
I searched quite a bit before I settled on the 80ohm version of those. I *loved* them, but the left driver has static now, and I think it's because a friend of mine borrowed them without my permission and blew out the driver with a low-quality or under-powered laptop's sound card. That doesn't really seem likely to me, but I can't think of what else could've happened.
Otherwise, I agree with sefs85 100%. And yes, the 80ohm version has a straight cord. I'd prefer the coiled cord, though...

...to put it bluntly, flat headphones are not at all complimentary to a mix and the only reason anyone has use for them is critical listening when adjusting tonal balance.

80ohm version or 250 ohm version for djing?
Nightx88 5 months ago
@Nightx88
...by djing do you mean that you are actually a working professional dj? or you just like to think of yourself as a dj because you bought yourself a Pioneer cdj?
80's go louder, 250's sound better (at least when properly amped) is the simple fact.
Having said that, why would a dj want to monitor with these?
Why not something that all the other dj wannabe geeks will think you are real cool with, like the Pioneer HDJ-2000?
evilsnakes1 5 months ago
@evilsnakes1 You sound so sour and hostile. I just asked a simple question. I think you should worry about yourself more than what "dj wannabe geeks" do.
Nightx88 5 months ago
@Nightx88
...you just answered my question
evilsnakes1 5 months ago
@evilsnakes1 All your questions where rhetorical, you moron. I'm sure you're the greatest coolest most unique Dj ever. Hopefully you'll make it big and eventually get out of your mom's basement.
Nightx88 5 months ago
@Nightx88
...my questions were not rhetorical and i never claimed to be a dj. you did. but i DO know my headphones so don't get your back all up, just take what I have to say straight up and thank me later
if you actually are a dj then these are not the headphones for you. something like the pioneer dj2000's (do NOT get the 1000's, they break easy and beware of fakes) has swivel cups, a replaceable cable and best of all, stereo/mono switching.
evilsnakes1 5 months ago
2...
and excuse my realism, if youre a dj, get dj headphones that all the other djs and dj wannabe's will think are cool. Don't get the ones that will make people say "what'd you get those for"? You think people buy beats because they sound good? You think someone who buys beats will be happy with anything other than beats? I dont makes the rules, im just pointing out a simple truth.
ps. personally if i was a dj id get lightweight kit: beyer dt1350 or cheaper sennhesier hd25.
evilsnakes1 5 months ago
@evilsnakes1 dj's that use beats dont do proper mixing as there a commercially run product aiming at the kids and people with more money than sense, beats are not clear for mixing, way overpowered low end witch can cause mixes difficult. also i haven't seen 1 proper dj use them apart from hip hop djs and wanna b's like will.i.am. they might look good and sound good but for that money you can get headphones that are more true to the original sound than colouring it up with overdriven frequencies.
DJLEE12345 5 months ago
@DJLEE12345
...cool but i dont know why you are telling me this. did you read my posts? i called them crap. i also did not recommend them for dj use i simply said some people want beats and those are the people who wont be happy with anything else. did you read which headphones i did recommend? i think you misunderstand the context of my point: I did not recommend beats for dj use (and NOT because they are colored because that is not an issue and dt770 are also base heavy).
evilsnakes1 5 months ago
...further, I think you are a little confused as to the use of flat reference monitors: it is imperative to have flat monitors when mixing, but do not convince yourself that crossfading is mixing. jeez. Unless you are affecting tonal balance (and i don't mean simply using a 3band eq on the final mix), there is no reason to get flat headphones and by far most dj's use colored headphones. Beats are poor dj headphones because of inadequate sound isolation, no other reason.
evilsnakes1 5 months ago
@evilsnakes1 i am far from confused, flat response is for monitoring in studio's or live events so what you produce will be replicated on other systems so stop the crap, am sorry but over the top coloured headphones for djing dont help you need a sensible amount of colouring around the mids and hi but more of an emphasis on the low end. am currently studing all this at university in studios that have equipment that would make you dribble so before coming back with the knowledge think first.
DJLEE12345 5 months ago

"over the top coloured headphones for djing dont help you need a sensible amount of colouring around the mids and hi but more of an emphasis on the low end"
...what does this even mean? you think coloring is only about mids/highs? once you've boosted the base you've colored the sound, and hd25's are base heavy. they are "fun" headphones. and they are used because they are ergonomic with exceptional background noise attenuation, not because they a flat. You see dj's using 840's?
evilsnakes1 5 months ago
...flat is going to help a dj crossfade between tracks? please explain how.
If you rad my posts from the beginning you will see that I made solid recommendations....
evilsnakes1 5 months ago
...my point about the beats was not a recommendation for dj's: it was a general truism that headphones, like all things, are subject to the praise/ridicule of a fickle crowd, whether merited or not, so why buck the trend? 840's are great headphones, so why don't dj's use them as their primary kit? If you are a rap dj and beats are still the hot item of the moment, by all means use those silly things because style is more than half the battle (although I don't actually recommend them).
evilsnakes1 5 months ago
...and about your school: good for you. keep it up. maybe you'll make something of your music education and studio/kit and not end up a quitter/code monkey like me who keeps buying expensive kit and not doing anything with it other then noodling. Maybe you can share some of the work you have produced/cross-fased.
evilsnakes1 5 months ago
...
errrrrrrr, cross-faded i mean
evilsnakes1 5 months ago

@preludedragster I have the ATH M50s, and I was a little dissapointed with the bass. The next pair I am getting are the DT 770s. I would say go with the 770s, and use the E11 as your amp, but I am also getting the E11, so I can give you a better recommendation soon.
SnifflyNose 6 months ago
@SnifflyNose Thanks for the response!!! Since we're on the bass subject did you see that Audio Technica came out with two new bass headphones? The ATH-WS55 and the ATH-WS70(which I might pull the trigger on, just ding some final homework, its either going to be Japanese or German...) can you check out their specs and give me your opinion on the bass on those?!?! Thank you!!!
preludedragster 6 months ago
@preludedragster Those headphones are only available in Japan. I think they look too pricy for what they offer. I would just stick to the DT770s, and get the E11 amp. These headphones would be very hard to find in the states, and you would probably pay premium for them.

@tedbad DT 880's compared to the DT 770's is the Closed End on the 770's and the Open Ends on the 880's. The dude at GuitarCenter said its not worth it to buy the 880's over the 770's unless you got the extra money. They both sound the same though.

@jtk474 Beat's have one of the lowest price:performance ratios when it comes to headphones, I'm going to have to suggest you avoid them at all cost.

from what I understand, the higher Ohm headphones have lighter voice coils so they can respond quicker to musical changes. The 600ohm version has the lightest voicecoil of the three, but the tradeoff is it happens to be much harder to drive.
Photo314159 10 months ago

The0IdMan 1 year ago
@tedbad
Good luck.
sefs85 1 year ago
@sefs85 The differences between 770,880, 990
770 pro- HEAVY bass, 770- idk, large soundstage.
880- good balance between everything. All-around headphone type.
990- most colored- sparkling treble, huge bass, at a cost of midrange.
There are differences between the pros and other ohm versions are different.

@JeemOfRunescape Yeah. I've used them through a grado headphone amp and also through my laptop's ministereo jack. Obviously its going to sound better through the amp, but it was acceptable to me through the laptop
jfts09 5 months ago
so if i buy the 250 ohm version, then i will get more background noise if i don't use an amp?
DerrickBouchard 1 year ago
@DerrickBouchard
Actually, no. If you bought the 250 ohm version and didn't use an amp you would get a, theoretically, less noisy signal, but at the same time, less powerful (dBs) sound.
sefs85 1 year ago
Great review dude. You convinced me to buy these half a year ago, and I decided to watch this again knowing what they are like first hand. I too got the 250ohm version cause I was very curious to try amping headphones out, and I will never go back. They're really fantastic headphones, though they don't go so well with certain types of music. Personally, they really shine for metal/rock/hip-hop.

gastonbarker 1 year ago
@gastonbarker
You don't need to buy an headphone amp to use these, it just makes full use of the headphone when you do. For your drum kit, it will most likely have enough power to work fine. I use my 250's on my iphone and feel they are sometimes underpowered. Give them a listen when you get them.

I'm trying to get headsets to use when wife is sleeping for surround. Do these accomplish that type of listening or would i have to really go with a headset that is made for 5.1 surround?
bowtie728 1 year ago
@bowtie728
