  • 97% of the prison population here are Japanese. A few thing my husband has noticed: Warning signs about crime are always in english/korean and only sometimes include Japanese language. There was a sticker on our living room window about "these premises are protected by CCTV"... only in english, no japanese at all. He hated it. It's gone. As for sexism.. well.. in social situations yes but if an employer wants to conform to ISO standards they cannot allow it so.. just work for an ISO place ;)

  • sometimes german sux too.

  • WHAT ABOUT THE JOB?

  • ESO EXPLICA UN MONTON DE COSAS, JAJAJA

  • So MUCH conforming! >.>

    So NOT me!

Well I won't be going there anytime soon!

  • I know this is always hard to talk about, but I wonder if that is a huge part of the suicide rate in Japan? There's so much conformity and speaking your inner feelings is taboo. I have heard of ESL teachers(Westerners) who have had Japanese people come to them in private to talk about how they feel, because their DOCTOR recommended talking to a foreigner about their emotions! Have you ever had a Japanese person open up a little? I would be glad to do that if I ever had the opportunity.

  • @DoctorYesPlease

If you are a true doctor, you'd know the best communication is without words.

As for this point, I think Japanese communication is the best way.

  • I would take all of that over chavs any day.

  • i fukin hate japan

  • @aivnboot The name of a country of your profile is Japan. However, you are Chong.

  • Hey there! I really enjoy your videos! Very insightful and honest! I admit to being one of those annoying westerners in love with Japanese culture. I was wondering if you would do me a small favor of helping me figure out what a couple of my Japanese toys are saying? Thanks so much!!

  • But, I am pretty sure you've made some unbiased opinions and shared facts about Japan in your other videos. Yet, thank you for this video! Helpful as always!

  • you never know what they think... hmmm Paradise for people obsessed with Conspiracies Theories :D

  • My girlfriend is japanese but im never been there. I really get pissed when she dont tell me de truth. It sucks! She always agree with what im saying and when she disagre she just say "i dont know!" or something like "eehh.." (very common with japanese people). This kind of situation happens a lot to me and absolutely suck!

  • your observation on Japanese saying yes but agreeing from inside is quite true . I heard it from many other people

  • It is sad that the relationship is not so close . Not good again

  • Sexism is no good

  • I also forgot the video "Be Good"

  • Well i WANTED to come to Japan but now i'm not so sure after i saw your videos "Bureaucracy", "descrimination in japan", "Healthcare", and this one

  • Thank you for your sincere honesty. You have a good heart. Please keep posting. I really enjoy your videos. I wish you abundant happiness - ALWAYS!

  • wow good help man more videos!!!!!!

  • Treat a girl like a princess and treat your wife/girlfriend as a queen

  • This is extremely helpful! Thank you so much for sharing your honest feelings on the downsides of Japan. It is important for people to know that although Japan is wonderful, it is not the exactly the way that it is portrayed in most foreign countries.

  • I just came home from a 6 months exchange program in Japan, and I agree with everything you're saying. Japan can really suck sometimes, but it is a good country in many ways as well. I wish I was able to stay there a little longer, just to learn the language a little bit better, but in the end I prefer to live in Norway.

  • 英語わかんねえよ

  • @SuperHanks12

    BENKYO BENKYO

  • I read an article said Chinese commit the most crime among foreigners, Brazilians were high up there too. Americans were low on the list because military personnel were omitted.

  • It's interesting with things that suck in Japan, there is explanation. Negatives in every country, but am baffled when can't back up. Japan's not perfect, but it's nice the WHY NOT point of argument. About conforming issue, generally one comes to Japan because they like the country/way it runs. One who disagrees wouldn't live there. But with the 'free thinking' point, Japanese not speaking truthfully something you expect/come to terms with if you're in Japan, and shouldn't be complained about.

  • The way you described friendship in Japan reminded me a lot of the friendships i formed in the U.S Army and i can sort of understand it. In the Army you're forced to be around a lot of people all the time and if you don't form friendships with people you're in for a rough ride so you do a lot of tongue-biting to keep peace. Yet even after forming some really close friendships, i've lost contact with every single person i met in the Army and i don't miss them at all.

  • Sounds terrible! Before I would like to try and live there for a while but now I think it would be enough to just be there for some weeks.

Hate it when ppl cant tell clearly what they are thinking.

  • @rirkla well you wont experience that stuff in just a few weeks most likely, it will still feel all new and shiny etc.... i think ud only see this side of it after a good few months there

  • I'm going move to japan myself when I'm done with college hopefully I'll have a good life there.

  • So I thought there were white lies, black lies, 9/11 lies.. But now I have learnt there are white lies, black lies, 9/11 lies, and Japanese lies! Thanks

  • Why doesn't this guy just MOVE already his videos prove that his life pretty much sucks there.

  • @GrayAu Your a fucking retard. Didn't he say he wanted to live there? You know what, no, there is no explaining this kind of a thing to a fucking autist lmao

  • @cloudstrife1256 autist? oh you're the 2nd person to make that joke based on my name :-) it's short for AuricGray, Au stands for gold and Auric means gold pertaining to that of the trivalent state. But no my comment is a hundred percent serious, and making fun of disability is worse than anything I could have said.

    Have a good day.

  • @GrayAu It still doesn't help the "your autistic" argument.

  • @cloudstrife1256 lol'd. People cannot be 'autistic' they HAVE autism. Do you realize how rude it is to call somebody autistic? At least I don't have an extra 23rd chromosome, sir Downz.

  • @GrayAu Way to call me a horrible person for asserting that someone has a mental retardation only to go right around and say that someone has downs syndrome. Correction, people CAN be autistic, if they were born with autism then they have autism and ARE autistic. And now, your living proof that someone can develop autism post-birth. You are a cancer to the human gene pool, I wish your mother would have learned to swallow.

  • @cloudstrife1256 certain behaviors shown by somebody afflicted with autism can be autistic but not the person themselves, troll. And I never said down syndrome just downz and that you had an extra 23rd. I mean I may or may not be implying something, but you, you actually already said it.

    And hey, fuck the genepool.

I don't have autism, just sociopath thoughts.

  • @GrayAu HAHAHAHA having an extra chromosome means you would have DS, you weren't implying anything else. Don't try to hide it. Ooohhh, sociopathic thoughts? What a unique individual! I bet you want to kill people, but the problem is it's not society to blame, it's you for not understanding social constructs and being a socially awkward faggot. See what I did there?

  • @cloudstrife1256 kewl the new iTroll. I c wut u did der lawl. 2 bad u butthurt.

  • @GrayAu Lmao you tried to tell me that a person with autism is not autistic. I'm gonna go grab dinner and get on with my life, you will keep being a fucking idiot. This verbal bitchslapping has been brought to you by me.

  • @cloudstrife1256 brought to you by me?

Well said indeed, child. Well said indeed.

    Have a nice day! :3

  • @GrayAu

    no clue

  • Every country has a bad thing and good thing

  • I'm diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome and lol do I find it frustrating on a daily basis in Japan. It is nice to hear a very realistic and honest side of things, a lot of Japanophiles seem to be in love with an illusion.

  • i think its not really sexism, its a more realistic portait, western countries portray women way better than they actually are.(here men are portrayed like idiots all over the media).

  • As far as sexism goes in Japan, I read that reported sexual crimes are lower purely because even being a victim of a sexual crime is tainting the person's family name and it is discouraged to bring to attention. I have heard (not sure) that in some places there are actually separate trains for women only because of the sexual misconduct that women sometimes have to deal with when riding on a coed train.

  • Very glad you made this video. Thank you. Of course I still want to go, but it's good to know both sides of the spectrum.

  • In Vancouver, I talked to a number of Japanese women and they all told me they didn't like the climate and natural disasters in Japan. I instantly learned of their ulterior motive (by reading between the lines), but I won't mention it here.

  • @gaiachaos2000 Now you got me curious... You won't say what their motives were??

  • Haha, I like your segue into "Ya, sometimes living in Japan SUCKS!"

Very good way of pointing out that in Japan, in general, it's more discrimination than racism. In the upcoming documentary called "HAFU" one person mentions that it's more "categorization" rather than racism.

  • @yuichituba calling it categorization or discrimination instead of racism is blatantly ignorant, because racism is racism haha.

  • @yuichituba racism is nothing other than to categorize people

  • @Sativa313 It is possible to categorize people without hating or mistreating the individual or group. People do it all the time without thinking about it.

  • @yuichituba of course but it is still racism, only because you use another word it doesn't make it beeter for example it isalso racism if you say that all asians are good in math and there is no hating or mistreating in that statement

  • @Sativa313 That's not racism.....in English we would label it as a "stereotype". Whether if someone takes it as racism or offensive is subjective.

  • Japan is all right, I like Korea and china better.

  • I hope wtf0414 is not American. If so not all Americans are like that.We have good respectful people here to. I am American and those that act like that are a disgrace to all.

  • can anyone else give me some input on him saying that the friendships / married couples aren't that close?

  • There are plenty of people in the U.S. that will blow smoke up your ass.

  • Im glad to hear that even through hardships, you think its worth it, it makes me feel abit better about the hardships ill most likely face when i move to japan in a few years (approximately 5 or 6, once im finished with school and university)

  • Wow, I was planning on moving over there but now, though I still want to move, I think that the possibility of me moving back is real and I wont expect paradise. Thanx a lot

  • A bit drawn out, but yeah, spot on. Part of the reason I left; I didn't want to be one of those angry expats.

  • Would a person be able to hold on to his or her Canadian citizenship while married to a Japanese person? Just wondering.

  • @jexman41 In no way is your citizenship in danger. Your citizenship can play a part, when you file your documents with the Japanese government. So you being a Canadian will actually assist you if you choose to live in Japan with your spouse. Citizens from other less developed nations may be given a shorter spousal visa at first (which sucks). So relax, your Canadian citizenship is perfectly save. I have been married to a Japanese national for 10 years and living in Japan as well.

  • @wtf0414 Well aren't you the racist little shit

  • Thanks man again these videos help a lot!

I plan to go this year for maybe a week or 2 I'm trying to learn the language it's tough but yeah thanks man!

  • If you ask for a honest answer or opinion, do they give it, or do they avoid answering?

  • The majority of crime is committed my foreigners????? I've looked it up. .045% of the crime that is committed in Japan is by foreigners. I'm tired of this misperception. Just because you misbehave does not mean you have broken the law.

  • @wtf0414 let me guess your american

  • @wtf0414 Maybe you're just a dickhead and the Japanese realize it. Japanese food is the shit, the culture is awesome, it's all good. I traveled all over the country and never got treated poorly in the least.

  • I've been to Japan 5 times in the last 4 years. As with any nation, they have problems just like we do in the US. On the whole, I love the country. Speaking Japanese is a real plus and so is being very conforming and respectful. My trips have been great but no one should visit with the illusion that everything is wonderful, be realistic in your expectations and you'll find that Japan is a fantastic place still. Best advice- Leave your "individualistic" American mentality back in the states.

  • こいつなんつってんの?良いこと?悪いこと?

  • @SuperHanks12 He's providing warnings, because you can't say Japan is perfect. It is fair. Not just bad or good. Hope you can understand! 僕には日本語があまり上手じゃないです。ごめん。

  • the land of sheeple

  • not a place for real humans to live, well said.

  • Good thing I'm asian and learning Japanese^^

  • Yes, it's worth it for all of those BL doujinsh-- I SAID NOTHING.

  • What about the relationship closeness part of the video? People are people, I don't see how you couldn't be close friends in a certain culture, or that people do not care about each other in one country. Please explain

    Great channel btw

  • I LVOE JAPANESE

  • Sexism in Japan? Sexual harassment? HA! That does not scare me! I am still going to Japan! I will just learn self defense! I WILL go to Japan! >.<

  • That was very interesting! I always thought of Japan in a fairy-tale way, but it´s good to hear of some unpleasant sides too. Guess the grass is always greener on the other side, isn´t it.

As an individualist which I am, I´d better not live there. But anyway, I´d love to see the country for a holiday - all thanks to your videos. They show me the truth, and that´s a wonderful thing. Reality bites - everywhere in the world.

  • This video is absolutely wonderful! I am the type of person who thinks that Japan would be worth it, but I must admit, that the honne and tatemae thing can really be frustrating. I'm always worried that I will do something wrong and no one will tell me! I hate that so much...Or that someone will tell me they are fine with something and they aren't. But I really hope to live in Japan despite these things. Thank you so much for these videos.

  • wow this gotta be the best video from you ever!

  • thank you for all you're doing ^^

  • I'm Japanese. Thank you for pointing out the downsides of our society. Japan still has a lot of homework to do to be a truly international country. By the way, I think "tatemae" practice exists in most countries more or less, Japanese one may be stronger than others, though.

  • It's great to hear honest opinions from non-Japanese.

  • Great video! greetings from Japan.

  • I have that friend problem in the USA.

  • Anime is despised by the Japanese government. If you come there expecting everyone to be the giant Otaku fan as yourself you are simply wrong.

  • So don't move to Japan if you want to be a genuine human. Got it.

  • i've been through lots and lots of your videos. one question: what is your name? (not family name, just surname)

  • Great video! You really know about what you are talking about.

Great wise man ! Thanks for another awesome report.

  • Thank you so much for these videos! I'm currently planning my move to Kyoto next year, so I'm trying to gather as much useful information as possible about Japan. It's awesome that you are willing to point out all the negatives about Japan. I'm young and easily influenced by what other people say, and I don't want to go there with some sort of naive dream about how everything in Japan is perfect, so again - Thank you! I feel like I'm more prepared now. :)

  • This is why if you want to live in Asia, South Korea is the best place to go. No sexism, better food, friendly, hot headed people (which is sort of bad in a way but it's better than fucking overly sensitive Japanese behavior), solid and warm workmates and more.

  • Japanese people if you read this PLEASE HURT ME ITS OKAY I WON'T BURST INTO FLAMES HURT MY FEELINGS!

  • i can't live in japan cos i can't eat the overly healthy food xD

  • People outside Japan point that much fewer women are in management level than in any other developed country and conclude women are discriminated in Japan. Really?

A truth, I think, is that the most women in Japan do not want that. Without having a stressful work life, majority of women there receive full salary from husbands and have a full control of home finance. So just showing her respect to her husband in public is no big deal. Let's go shopping while men sweat earning money!

  • Comment removed

  • @dzunku1 hmm. i think that conclusion is from more than management statistics. in the west, when some women said 'i want freedom to achieve goals instead of a golden cage,' not all women agreed with them... believing that a womans place is as you say. but i think it's better for individuals to have that choice if they want it, because not everyone is happy staying at home and bringing up children as their meaning in life. i wonder how many geniuses have given up on dreams for that.

  • Well said old chap! Here Here!

  • When I visited Japan and watched TV, I was surprised at how blatant the camera scans women up & down during interviews. Such as at their legs when they are talking. That wouldn't fly on American TV.

  • 6:28 its soooo true :D I remember reading a novel or play about a Japanese women carrying a dead body. Even though it was kinda obvious, no one asked about it so they dont "make her feel bad."

  • so true... worst thing you can do is think negative all the time and just stay in your house all day.

  • as far as like, public displays of affection in japan - i'm just really curious, is that considered rude or is it common?

your videos are helpful and much appreciated!

  • @breathingwishes PDA in Japan is rarely seen. Children in Japan, very often, grow up never seeing their parents hug. So it is almost taboo. If not taboo (mainly younger generation) it will still stand out and people will feel uncomfortable.

Hong Kong on the other hand........damn, those couples easily make out in public, lol.

  • i like the japanese culture how they can't turn down doing a favour but regret it. i'm naturally like that. or you say you're fine just in the heat of the moment. also i wouldnt want to be in a culture where everyone must know what you're thinking like peering into your mind. that said the idea of 'not going out' and suffering the consequences like economically seems bad.

  • Working my way through your video series and finding it to be extremely well done and considered. Are you perchance a fellow Aussie...or a Kiwi? And if this is not too intrusive, what is your profession or trade,,,and what field of work do you currently engage in while in Japan?

Best wishes from SoCal (South O.C.) USA

  • I love Japanese culture but I dont think that I would be able to behave like a sheep in a herd if I lived in Japan.

  • future farmers of japan kids came to my class for a week and stayed with students at night it was interesting they where all very nice and polite

  • Well so does America.

  • i am japanese and this is true. but I am sure that his meaning of "discrimination" is actually meaning "conservative". Japan is very conservative country is unlike people in usa. it is totally opposite i think.

  • Thanks for uploading these videos.

I really want to live in Japan. However, I heard that even latin people like me is seeing in a very bad way by the Japanese, by some of the things you mentioned; but for us is even worse. Can you tell me if the latins are more discrimated than the other foreigners?

    Thanks

    Cheers from Mexico.

  • @squallgallardo

    "How to" playlist.. "discrimination" video.

  • @squallgallardo when did you learn english

  • @h68819 More than 15 years ago. I took several courses since I was a kid. Why do you ask?

  • @squallgallardo cause of you message, it should say, people like me are seen in a very bad way, but for us its even worse and a few other parts like that

  • @h68819 Thanks for the heads up. Seems that I need to keep checking my grammar since sometimes I kind of mess up a few words.

    Where're you from?

  • @squallgallardo America

  • @squallgallardo Well, you can't even live in Japan. They take a lot of pride in being a "pure" country and they don't have any immigration, no exceptions. The only possible way for you to live in Japan is if you marry someone who lives there (which would be hard because of the discrimination) or if you get a job (which would also be very difficult)

  • @furstenfeldbruck Flagged for racist comment

  • @squallgallardo D'aww goes flagging me make you feel like a big man now?

  • @squallgallardo

I don think so, we can not tell who is coming from which nation those days!!!

We treat u all right , I guess, so don be afraid please visit us!!

  • It's nice to know this. Thanks for making these videos.

    :)

  • Yeah I kinda figured they were sexiest after watching Misa from Death Note. (It's an anime if you don't know)

  • I never knew sexist was such a big issue in Japan. It is a very big shock to me.

  • I LOVE SAMURAI JAPAN

  • This guy really knows what he's talking about here. I lived there for a number of years, have a Japanese wife, Japanese friends, experienced the life. While a majority of the time I was able to function fine in society and liked it very much, theirs many frustrations. Frustrations this man puts perfectly into words.

  • I have a question..Why is it that you decided to go live to japan?! i mean imnot sure if you said it in your video but i would liketo know if itsnt too much to ask.

  • This video gave me more realistic view of Japan, so thank you! Still Japan sounds really great, becouse I don't mind going with the flow and do what I've told. Keep these great videos coming and mabey some day I will actually visit in Japan!

  • About communication and relations:

I think the words may betray you, in any country, but not the actions. So, you can know how someone thinks/feels by observing the actions. And some people don't say a word but show their attitude by actions.

If someone is repeatedly helping you, for example, s/he is willing to support you.

In Japan, I think this type of non-verbal communication is almost required and a bit (or more) overused, causing trouble/frustration if one relies more on words.

  • With the rent thing... I'm not buying it. Landlords almost always require some sort of security deposit, and usually in Japan it's a huge security deposit, possibly accompanied by some expensive gifting. Just an excuse for discrimination, just like the "no foreigners cause you don't understand our culture" excuse. Sorry buddy, you can't enter this onsen, you're black, you can't possibly understand the complexities of washing yourself and sitting in water.

  • Fantastic video. I love how concise and clear you are and your points are almost always relevant and interesting. Thanks for doing a video of this type.

  • I have been watching your videos and really like them...but this makes me think twice about visiting Japan....being a Black Woman ..this would Never do. it just seems like a crazy slavery way of thinking....If I wanted Fake! I'd better just stay where I am....I do like the different landscapes and Gardens.....

  • The world has seen what "Japanese culture" is all about during second world war. Every Japanese should have died of shame by then.

Today USA owns Japan economically. It doesn't matter what Japanese people like and dislike about Americans in particular.

  • I'm Japanese, I've been living in Australia for 4 years.I think some of them is true, but some of them is not.Just his opinion and his feeling.I'm also irritated to living in AUS ( sometimes) like him. Because I grow up in Japan sometimes I can't keep up with a system and a custom in AUS.But I like Japan and AUS both.He also said there is nothing perfect place to live.

  • just wondering, i am a female living in canada. i have thought about moving to japan when i am older. will it be really hard for me to adjust to japan culture?

  • @ThePrettypagan watch anime and you will learn about japan go to crunchyroll they have every anime

  • @NarutoRocks2011 You gotta be kidding me. Anime won't teach you a SINGLE THING about Japan.

  • @MrCadefulp Not quite true, a lot of the customs and habits that are natural in japan are included in many animie's (mostly Slice of Life type) but I do agree that basing your love and will to move here is quite outrageous, but if it gets you interested then hey, more power to him.

  • Comment removed

  • @MrCadefulp true lol...i always thought freindship was like number one...its like that in all anime..they'll do ANYTHING for their friends... :-(

  • Maybe its just culture shock ?

  • ummm... I'm Japanese and lived in Japan for 10 years and, well, I haven't had any sexism related problems what so ever? maybe I was just lucky? but either way, I don't think Japan is such a sexist country as many people think they are...?

  • This talk of sexism definitely scares me, considering how I'm doing an internship abroad for pre-med next year and am female.

    Plus the tatamae issue.

The lack of intimacy seems so strange.

Either way, thanks for the treasure trove of info in this video!!

  • Can i ask you, about how much is the average cost of a 1-2 bedroom apartment in Japan?? Also are you simply able to buy a house and never pay anything again or how does it work exactly? please let me know. Thanks!!

  • @NeztyKash

Japan and most countries have a thing called "property tax" that must be paid every year..

look at the "buying a house in Japan" playlist..

  • thanks for the video i don't think i will be moving to Japan anytime soon ( definately holiday though) i enjoy my freedom of speech, anti-sexism and friends i know what is on there mind XD.

I have a lot of respect for Japan and its unique culture but as you pointed out it is a select taste

Thanks for the videos and keep up the good work !!

P.S just wondering are you Aussie your accent seems like it?

  • @byrn3x yes hes aussie

  • I must ask you... What makes you feel living there is worth it? What do you get out of living in Japan?

  • i`m japanese and i totally agree with you`r opinion except the part about the friendship or relationship between the citizen. As you can tell from the tsunami catastrophe, they were helping eachother and people stands up to cooperate for the tohoku region and i was amazed of how every individual(from young to old) was actually doing some sort of aid.I cant compare to other foreing country but i can say the japanese have close relationship as you think.

  • Great video, very informative and helpful. Had mates that have gone there and told me they had a blast but couldn't live there, they weren't able to properly tell me why they found it hard to adapt to the Japanese lifestyle. This has helped a lot, thanks.

  • ps. When you see sexism on the streets how does it make you feel?

  • I've seen a Japanese show about an idol group and sometimes the male host hits the girls on the head. It bugs me but after seeing this I understand why they treat women this way.

  • I'm with you. I love the Japanese culture. The honesty, the shakuhachi, art, Zen Buddhism, the way they talk and gesture (thanks to Kurosawa samurai movies and Toshiro Mifune), and even the bad houses in your "Interesting Japanese Houses" videos.

  • appreciate the honesty, love the videos keep them up!
