97% of the prison population here are Japanese. A few thing my husband has noticed: Warning signs about crime are always in english/korean and only sometimes include Japanese language. There was a sticker on our living room window about "these premises are protected by CCTV"... only in english, no japanese at all. He hated it. It's gone. As for sexism.. well.. in social situations yes but if an employer wants to conform to ISO standards they cannot allow it so.. just work for an ISO place ;)
I know this is always hard to talk about, but I wonder if that is a huge part of the suicide rate in Japan? There's so much conformity and speaking your inner feelings is taboo. I have heard of ESL teachers(Westerners) who have had Japanese people come to them in private to talk about how they feel, because their DOCTOR recommended talking to a foreigner about their emotions! Have you ever had a Japanese person open up a little? I would be glad to do that if I ever had the opportunity.
Hey there! I really enjoy your videos! Very insightful and honest! I admit to being one of those annoying westerners in love with Japanese culture. I was wondering if you would do me a small favor of helping me figure out what a couple of my Japanese toys are saying? Thanks so much!!
But, I am pretty sure you've made some unbiased opinions and shared facts about Japan in your other videos. Yet, thank you for this video! Helpful as always!
My girlfriend is japanese but im never been there. I really get pissed when she dont tell me de truth. It sucks! She always agree with what im saying and when she disagre she just say "i dont know!" or something like "eehh.." (very common with japanese people). This kind of situation happens a lot to me and absolutely suck!
This is extremely helpful! Thank you so much for sharing your honest feelings on the downsides of Japan. It is important for people to know that although Japan is wonderful, it is not the exactly the way that it is portrayed in most foreign countries.
I just came home from a 6 months exchange program in Japan, and I agree with everything you're saying. Japan can really suck sometimes, but it is a good country in many ways as well. I wish I was able to stay there a little longer, just to learn the language a little bit better, but in the end I prefer to live in Norway.
I read an article said Chinese commit the most crime among foreigners, Brazilians were high up there too. Americans were low on the list because military personnel were omitted.
It's interesting with things that suck in Japan, there is explanation. Negatives in every country, but am baffled when can't back up. Japan's not perfect, but it's nice the WHY NOT point of argument. About conforming issue, generally one comes to Japan because they like the country/way it runs. One who disagrees wouldn't live there. But with the 'free thinking' point, Japanese not speaking truthfully something you expect/come to terms with if you're in Japan, and shouldn't be complained about.
The way you described friendship in Japan reminded me a lot of the friendships i formed in the U.S Army and i can sort of understand it. In the Army you're forced to be around a lot of people all the time and if you don't form friendships with people you're in for a rough ride so you do a lot of tongue-biting to keep peace. I hope wtf0414 is not American. If so not all Americans are like that.We have good respectful people here to. I am American and those that act like that are a disgrace to all.
Im glad to hear that even through hardships, you think its worth it, it makes me feel abit better about the hardships ill most likely face when i move to japan in a few years (approximately 5 or 6, once im finished with school and university)
Wow, I was planning on moving over there but now, though I still want to move, I think that the possibility of me moving back is real and I wont expect paradise. Thanx a lot
@jexman41 In no way is your citizenship in danger. Your citizenship can play a part, when you file your documents with the Japanese government. So you being a Canadian will actually assist you if you choose to live in Japan with your spouse. Citizens from other less developed nations may be given a shorter spousal visa at first (which sucks). So relax, your Canadian citizenship is perfectly save. I have been married to a Japanese national for 10 years and living in Japan as well.
Thank you for the heads up its great to have some real advice. I would like to go to japan but dont know if ill do it for a year or try and do a few weeks first.
The majority of crime is committed my foreigners????? I've looked it up. .045% of the crime that is committed in Japan is by foreigners. I'm tired of this misperception. Just because you misbehave does not mean you have broken the law.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
i hate japanese, i hate japanese culture, i hate japanese food, i hate japanese style, i hate japanese's look. i hate everything about them.
on the other hand. i've been to korea and noticed it is sooooooo much better than those japanese monkey city. people, NEVER EVER GO TO JAPAN. THEY TREAT FOREIGNERS LIKE SHIT
@wtf0414 Maybe you're just a dickhead and the Japanese realize it. Japanese food is the shit, the culture is awesome, it's all good. I traveled all over the country and never got treated poorly in the least.
I've been to Japan 5 times in the last 4 years. As with any nation, they have problems just like we do in the US. On the whole, I love the country. Speaking Japanese is a real plus and so is being very conforming and respectful. My trips have been great but no one should visit with the illusion that everything is wonderful, be realistic in your expectations and you'll find that Japan is a fantastic place still. Best advice- Leave your "individualistic" American mentality back in the states.
@SuperHanks12 He's providing warnings, because you can't say Japan is perfect. It is fair. Not just bad or good. Hope you can understand! 僕には日本語があまり上手じゃないです。ごめん。
What about the relationship closeness part of the video? People are people, I don't see how you couldn't be close friends in a certain culture, or that people do not care about each other in one country. Please explain
That was very interesting! I always thought of Japan in a fairy-tale way, but it´s good to hear of some unpleasant sides too. Guess the grass is always greener on the other side, isn´t it.
As an individualist which I am, I´d better not live there. But anyway, I´d love to see the country for a holiday - all thanks to your videos. They show me the truth, and that´s a wonderful thing. Reality bites - everywhere in the world.
This video is absolutely wonderful! I am the type of person who thinks that Japan would be worth it, but I must admit, that the honne and tatemae thing can really be frustrating. I'm always worried that I will do something wrong and no one will tell me! I hate that so much...Or that someone will tell me they are fine with something and they aren't. But I really hope to live in Japan despite these things. Thank you so much for these videos.
I'm Japanese. Thank you for pointing out the downsides of our society. Japan still has a lot of homework to do to be a truly international country. By the way, I think "tatemae" practice exists in most countries more or less, Japanese one may be stronger than others, though.
Thank you so much for these videos! I'm currently planning my move to Kyoto next year, so I'm trying to gather as much useful information as possible about Japan. It's awesome that you are willing to point out all the negatives about Japan. I'm young and easily influenced by what other people say, and I don't want to go there with some sort of naive dream about how everything in Japan is perfect, so again - Thank you! I feel like I'm more prepared now. :)
This is why if you want to live in Asia, South Korea is the best place to go. No sexism, better food, friendly, hot headed people (which is sort of bad in a way but it's better than fucking overly sensitive Japanese behavior), solid and warm workmates and more.
People outside Japan point that much fewer women are in management level than in any other developed country and conclude women are discriminated in Japan. Really?
A truth, I think, is that the most women in Japan do not want that. Without having a stressful work life, majority of women there receive full salary from husbands and have a full control of home finance. So just showing her respect to her husband in public is no big deal. Let's go shopping while men sweat earning money!
@dzunku1 hmm. i think that conclusion is from more than management statistics. in the west, when some women said 'i want freedom to achieve goals instead of a golden cage,' not all women agreed with them... believing that a womans place is as you say. but i think it's better for individuals to have that choice if they want it, because not everyone is happy staying at home and bringing up children as their meaning in life. i wonder how many geniuses have given up on dreams for that.
When I visited Japan and watched TV, I was surprised at how blatant the camera scans women up & down during interviews. Such as at their legs when they are talking. That wouldn't fly on American TV.
6:28 its soooo true :D I remember reading a novel or play about a Japanese women carrying a dead body. Even though it was kinda obvious, no one asked about it so they dont "make her feel bad."
@breathingwishes PDA in Japan is rarely seen. Children in Japan, very often, grow up never seeing their parents hug. So it is almost taboo. If not taboo (mainly younger generation) it will still stand out and people will feel uncomfortable.
Hong Kong on the other hand........damn, those couples easily make out in public, lol.
i like the japanese culture how they can't turn down doing a favour but regret it. i'm naturally like that. or you say you're fine just in the heat of the moment. also i wouldnt want to be in a culture where everyone must know what you're thinking like peering into your mind. that said the idea of 'not going out' and suffering the consequences like economically seems bad.
Working my way through your video series and finding it to be extremely well done and considered. Are you perchance a fellow Aussie...or a Kiwi? And if this is not too intrusive, what is your profession or trade,,,and what field of work do you currently engage in while in Japan?
i am japanese and this is true. but I am sure that his meaning of "discrimination" is actually meaning "conservative". Japan is very conservative country is unlike people in usa. it is totally opposite i think.
I really want to live in Japan. However, I heard that even latin people like me is seeing in a very bad way by the Japanese, by some of the things you mentioned; but for us is even worse. Can you tell me if the latins are more discrimated than the other foreigners?
@squallgallardo cause of you message, it should say, people like me are seen in a very bad way, but for us its even worse and a few other parts like that
@squallgallardo Well, you can't even live in Japan. They take a lot of pride in being a "pure" country and they don't have any immigration, no exceptions. The only possible way for you to live in Japan is if you marry someone who lives there (which would be hard because of the discrimination) or if you get a job (which would also be very difficult)
Japan's memorial service to Korean who taught them how to write and gave them culture are the reasons why Japanese are always afraid of Koreans. The fear towards the domination of the nation is running inside their DNA.
This guy really knows what he's talking about here. I lived there for a number of years, have a Japanese wife, Japanese friends, experienced the life. While a majority of the time I was able to function fine in society and liked it very much, theirs many frustrations. Frustrations this man puts perfectly into words.
I have a question..Why is it that you decided to go live to japan?! i mean imnot sure if you said it in your video but i would liketo know if itsnt too much to ask.
This video gave me more realistic view of Japan, so thank you! Still Japan sounds really great, becouse I don't mind going with the flow and do what I've told. Keep these great videos coming and mabey some day I will actually visit in Japan!
I think the words may betray you, in any country, but not the actions. So, you can know how someone thinks/feels by observing the actions. And some people don't say a word but show their attitude by actions.
If someone is repeatedly helping you, for example, s/he is willing to support you.
In Japan, I think this type of non-verbal communication is almost required and a bit (or more) overused, causing trouble/frustration if one relies more on words.
With the rent thing... I'm not buying it. Landlords almost always require some sort of security deposit, and usually in Japan it's a huge security deposit, possibly accompanied by some expensive gifting. Just an excuse for discrimination, just like the "no foreigners cause you don't understand our culture" excuse. Sorry buddy, you can't enter this onsen, you're black, you can't possibly understand the complexities of washing yourself and sitting in water.
Fantastic video. I love how concise and clear you are and your points are almost always relevant and interesting. Thanks for doing a video of this type.
I have been watching your videos and really like them...but this makes me think twice about visiting Japan....being a Black Woman ..this would Never do. it just seems like a crazy slavery way of thinking....If I wanted Fake! I'd better just stay where I am....I do like the different landscapes and Gardens.....
I'm Japanese, I've been living in Australia for 4 years.I think some of them is true, but some of them is not.Just his opinion and his feeling.I'm also irritated to living in AUS ( sometimes) like him. Because I grow up in Japan sometimes I can't keep up with a system and a custom in AUS.But I like Japan and AUS both.He also said there is nothing perfect place to live.
just wondering, i am a female living in canada. i have thought about moving to japan when i am older. will it be really hard for me to adjust to japan culture?
@MrCadefulp Not quite true, a lot of the customs and habits that are natural in japan are included in many animie's (mostly Slice of Life type) but I do agree that basing your love and will to move here is quite outrageous, but if it gets you interested then hey, more power to him.
ummm... I'm Japanese and lived in Japan for 10 years and, well, I haven't had any sexism related problems what so ever? maybe I was just lucky? but either way, I don't think Japan is such a sexist country as many people think they are...?
The retort was non constructive. You can slap a passive agressive label on it all you want, but the fact is that he got butt hurt about constructive advice and made an unnecessarily harsh (and slightly immature) comment in return. If you can't see the reaction was immature, then you are either kissing ass or immature as well.
Can i ask you, about how much is the average cost of a 1-2 bedroom apartment in Japan?? Also are you simply able to buy a house and never pay anything again or how does it work exactly? please let me know. Thanks!!
thanks for the video i don't think i will be moving to Japan anytime soon ( definately holiday though) i enjoy my freedom of speech, anti-sexism and friends i know what is on there mind XD.
I have a lot of respect for Japan and its unique culture but as you pointed out it is a select taste
Thanks for the videos and keep up the good work !!
P.S just wondering are you Aussie your accent seems like it?
i`m japanese and i totally agree with you`r opinion except the part about the friendship or relationship between the citizen. As you can tell from the tsunami catastrophe, they were helping eachother and people stands up to cooperate for the tohoku region and i was amazed of how every individual(from young to old) was actually doing some sort of aid.I cant compare to other foreing country but i can say the japanese have close relationship as you think.
Great video, very informative and helpful. Had mates that have gone there and told me they had a blast but couldn't live there, they weren't able to properly tell me why they found it hard to adapt to the Japanese lifestyle. This has helped a lot, thanks.
I've seen a Japanese show about an idol group and sometimes the male host hits the girls on the head. It bugs me but after seeing this I understand why they treat women this way.
I'm with you. I love the Japanese culture. The honesty, the shakuhachi, art, Zen Buddhism, the way they talk and gesture (thanks to Kurosawa samurai movies and Toshiro Mifune), and even the bad houses in your "Interesting Japanese Houses" videos.

@Sativa313 That's not racism.....in English we would label it as a "stereotype". Whether if someone takes it as racism or offensive is subjective.

Would a person be able to hold on to his or her Canadian citizenship while married to a Japanese person? Just wondering.
jexman41 1 month ago
@jexman41 In no way is your citizenship in danger. Your citizenship can play a part, when you file your documents with the Japanese government. So you being a Canadian will actually assist you if you choose to live in Japan with your spouse. Citizens from other less developed nations may be given a shorter spousal visa at first (which sucks). So relax, your Canadian citizenship is perfectly save. I have been married to a Japanese national for 10 years and living in Japan as well.

@dzunku1 hmm. i think that conclusion is from more than management statistics. in the west, when some women said 'i want freedom to achieve goals instead of a golden cage,' not all women agreed with them... believing that a womans place is as you say. but i think it's better for individuals to have that choice if they want it, because not everyone is happy staying at home and bringing up children as their meaning in life. i wonder how many geniuses have given up on dreams for that.

breathingwishes 5 months ago 3

About communication and relations:
I think the words may betray you, in any country, but not the actions. So, you can know how someone thinks/feels by observing the actions. And some people don't say a word but show their attitude by actions.
If someone is repeatedly helping you, for example, s/he is willing to support you.
In Japan, I think this type of non-verbal communication is almost required and a bit (or more) overused, causing trouble/frustration if one relies more on words.

what about when you are on a holiday in japan and stay in a hotel. I wonder what the japanese people think about the foreigners ^-^ (just a thought)
boweki 6 months ago
With the rent thing... I'm not buying it. Landlords almost always require some sort of security deposit, and usually in Japan it's a huge security deposit, possibly accompanied by some expensive gifting. Just an excuse for discrimination, just like the "no foreigners cause you don't understand our culture" excuse. Sorry buddy, you can't enter this onsen, you're black, you can't possibly understand the complexities of washing yourself and sitting in water.
