i have always been a huge fan of waylon jennings and low and behold i was running coal southbound to san antonio texas and when we stopped over night in houston town . just so happend waylon and willie was doing a show at the astro dome for the rodeo there. so we go to lunch and walk into a taco bell and none other than waylon and willie was sitting there by themselves eating. lol we visited for a while and i was star struck they liked hearing rail road stories. lol godbless everybody.
It's weird, buddy holly died on february 3rd and his BFF waylon died on february 13th. it's sad that buddy died when he did, cuz i read where waylon said buddy was the only (or one of the few) that truly believed in him, and gave him a lot of support. lol i read that waylon wanted to do rock 'n roll but buddy told him that he was country. i'm sure buddy would be proud of the success that his friend found :).
music like this is hard to come by. country music today is nothing but smoke and lights compared to the greats bring back country music like this. long live the legends.
I too know the story about the friendship between Buddy Holly and Waylon. it is very sad..hopeully the day Waylon passed on...he was greeted By Buddy with a smile and a hand shake for his old friend both looking as young and health as that night in 1959. another cool fact about this video if any Holly fans notice...the backing band of cowboys playing with Waylon are actually... none other than the real Crickets
None other than the real Crickets? It's definitely Joe B on bass, but how can you tell it's Jerry Allison on drums? From the hat he's wearing, the drummer looks like Ritchie Albright to me.
He was suppose to be on the plane that crashed and killed Buddy too. He even joked with Buddy about the plane crashing. Waylon never forgave himself for that one. RIP all of the Legends.
Damn fine performance. There was only one Waylon. He did it his way and had fun with the music. Unlike the "pop" crap they attempt to call country nowadays, Waylon was the real deal. Jamey Johnson is off to a good start though. He has that kind of soul to his songs.
I think this is from Waylon's TV special in the fall of 1980. James Garner was on that special. It's never been released in full, but I've seen bits of it on YouTube and on various Waylon documentaries. I saw it once years ago in Japan in a bar, but the bar ladies didn't speak much English, so I don't know where they got it.
it was buddy who taght waylon to play like he did by saying to him dont play by the rules what he ment was play the gitaur the way you want not the way evrybody thinks you should
The band backing up Waylon is Buddy's original band, The Crickets. Joe B. Mauldin on bass, Jerry Allison on drums and Sonny Curtis on guitar.
Also, Waylon played bass for Buddy on the Winter Dance Party tour and gave his seat to J.P. in exchange for the use of JP's newly purchased sleeping bag, because the heating on their tour bus had broken. Buddy told Waylon "I hope your ol' bus freezes up" to which Waylon replied "Well I hope your ol' plane crashes".
Where'd you get this? I'm really eager to see the entire Red Rocks show. The clips I've seen (this one and Honky Tonk Heroes from the Renegade, Outlaw, Legend documentary) are great. Awesome crowd and Waylon was kicking ass.
Waylon was the lead guitarist for Buddy Holly at one point i do believe. Before Buddy's plane crashed, waylon was told there wasn't enough room so he had to take a car. before they lifted off, Waylon muttered "I hope your god-damn plane crashes". Be careful what u wish for eh?
Ahmmmm.... A small correction - Waylon was supposed to be on the flight. The Big Bopper who was ill and was supposed to go on the bus asked Waylon if he would give him his seat on the flght. Waylon agreed.
They were all my friends, we were all Lubbock boys.... I fthere is a here after, I will see them all again,

February 3, 1959 haunted Waylon for the rest of his life. All the drugs and booze were his way of trying to put it out of his his mind.

"Play it Sonny!" Sonny Curtis, another of Buddy Holly's band mates, rips up the solo twice! Looks like Joe B on the bass too.

If there's ever a person that has earned the right to cover a Buddy Holly staple, it's this man right here.

Yeah according to his bio he suffered a lot of guilt for even uttering that, I am sure he didn't wish for that to actually happen!

waylon was the bass player for Holly.. He learned the bass 3 weeks prior to the clear lake show.
