This is totally Islamic. Prophet (pbuh) ordered the women of medina to do matam when Hazrat Hamzah (R.A) got martyrdom. Also Hazrat Owais Qarni broke his teeth when he heard that our Prophet (pbuh) lost his teeth in battle of Ohud and prophet did not say that Owais did a haram act by breaking his teeth in love of Prophet(pbuh). Similarly Ayesha (ra) hit her face when prophet died.

@ghurammi The people did that in front of our prophet (PBUH) and prophet did not stop them to do these acts.To hit ones self in grief or shock is not haram. This mourning is to remember what happened to the family of prophet (PBUH) on the day of ashura. Even ahlulbayt(a.s) praised these mourning activities and this is the life line
