  • what?

  • Osaka never blinks :O

  • i live in Osaka.

a lot of Hanshin things there.

in center of Osaka, there's two of big shopping moles called "Hanshin" and "Hankyu".

and also,baseball-team"Hanshin-Tigers", local train "Hanshin-Train" is famous.

sorry for my poor english skills. :)

  • @magnesium1616 =D Your English skills rock so don't worry about it. ^)_^ ty for the info!

  • the music makes me in such a good mood (^ ^)

  • Osaka: HANSHIN!

    Lady: hhanSHin??????

    Osaka: HAI!!

now look at the lady's face... then.......

    Osaka: HANSHIN.....

    funny....

  • hanshin.....0_0

  • osaka non expression face is so awesome

  • Isn't it common sense that what Osaka said has nothing to do with tigers, baseball, teams or a region? Why would the lady act freaked out, if she was just talking about a region? That's just a question I ask myself when I read all of your comments about baseball, tigers, and regions.. Wtf?

  • @Aprilisbored

It's funny because she made a plush novelty of a tower and a region of Japan (I'm 100% that's what she's referring to). Generally stuffed toys are bears, cats, cute things etc. like what Sakaki made. We are shown Osaka's Tsutenkaku which is a pink oval, so we can only imagine what the hell her impression of Hanshin is. The lady was wierded out because it's bizarre. That's why it's funny.

  • Anyone know the ost for this one?

  • Does Hanshin sorta have the creepy feeling vibe the way Hades does? o_o Just so I can know what to feel. xD

  • How very peculiar, I found this floating around on the internet...

Hanshin (阪神), a word derived from the second kanji from Osaka (大阪) and the first kanji from Kobe (神戸)

I know it refers to Osaka as in the place, but it was just so coincidental that I found this, that I couldn't resist posting it...

  • If I didn't know better, I'd think that that was an art gallery.

  • i was taken here by tropes and i have to say i LOVE the face that girl makes after hearing hanshin. i think i need to see this anime...

  • hanshin

  • Comment removed

  • ... after watching nichijou it came to my mind

Could Osaka actually be the greatest troll in history!?

  • @iGourry Nope. That would be Izaya or Terumi. Can't decide which. I still understand though.

  • @iGourry I doubt Osaka would even know what trolling is. That title strictly belongs to Mai Minakami.

  • well i don't think that woman is coming back until someone changes places with osaka

  • this is on tv tropes

  • Hanshin Henshin

  • LOL :D

  • lol, osaka yelling "WELCOME" with the woman just next to her XD

  • @conchudo12345 really she would be yelling "welcome" right next to a erupting volcano and never notice the volcano at all.

  • HANSHIN.

    THAT IS ALL.

  • I LOVE OSAKA SOOOOOO MUCH!!!!<3<3<3 XD

if only she were real, sigh :'3

  • Hanshin is the most popular professional baseball team in Kansai area. In the United States, if you ask a girl "What is this?", please imagine your reaction when she answered "It's Dodgers".

  • Hai.

    Hanshin.

  • i think the 'hanshin' that Osaka meant is 阪神(hanshin) which is the abbreviation of 大阪(Osaka) and 神戸(Kobe). Since the first doll is 通天閣(tsuutenkaku) which is a tower in Osaka prefecture, it is relevant to think that the second doll has something to do with Osaka(since she IS from Osaka)..

  • @The89shachan Well that's why they gave her the nickname Osaka because she was from Osaka, instead of her actual sur/given name

    ooppss...

  • love how the fansubbers didnt considder that osaka was refering to the hanshin region.

  • BEST EVER FAIL IN JAPAN :3

  • @osiud Shinto shrine priestess.

  • I have a friend who is a true Japanese miko and she told me that buying a "hanshin" at a school plush toy shop is like going to a school fair and winning a shrunken head or a voodoo doll. xD

  • @Tanoro Ok, your (or your friends) explanation just made this scene make a lot more sense and is a heck of a lot funnier. Thanks!

  • @Tanoro hanshins a region though.

  • Will Osaka ever cease to entertain

    (The Answer is no)

  • I burst out laughing when she said 'Hanshin' for the last time

  • That last "Hanshin" was soooo necessary. XD

  • hahahahaha! one of my favorite scenes from the series! :D

  • shoping with osaka

  • lol! My earliest memory of Azumanga Daioh is the "Detachable ponytails" scene. That's when I knew that this was not a series governed by logic and reason.

  • @AxelWedstar411 logic and reason are irrelevant to osaka, and thats why we all love her

  • Comment removed

  • ok, I got the whole "Hanshin" joke part but I didn't get the "Tsutenkaku tower" part...can someone tell me why that's funny?

  • @animationeer Uuumm I'm not sure but I think it's because the Tsutenkaku is in Osaka, and her name is Osaka. That or the Tsutenkaku is no where near that pink blob the lady held up

  • @VongolaFamilgia her name is osaka because she's from osaka. that's not her real name. hanshin actually refers to the region between osaka and kobe, or i think that's what it's referring to in this case.

  • @Joon2324 I see. Yea I didn't really get this part either, so I'm just throwing thoughts out there

  • @VongolaFamilgia you're totally right about tsutenkaku. point is that all the stuff is from osaka and none of it can properly be made into stuffed toys. especially hanshin =)

  • @Joon2324 In addition to that, Hanshin(Hanshin Tigers) is the most famous baseball team in Osaka.

Tsuutenkaku and Hanshin are symbols of Osaka^^

  • It's funny because it looks nothing like a tower. Except from Oaska's bizzare point of view.

  • Osaka is the best.

  • Osaka-chan is awesome ^^

  • Searching up Tsuutenkaku on google images adds the humor to 0:33 because it looks nothing like a pink blob. :D

  • LOL I can't help but laugh when Osaka says 'hai'

  • HAI. My new favorite word.

  • HANSHIN

  • HANSHIN.

  • Osaka is great ^^

  • "Excuse me, what are these?"

    "This one's a dog, and this one's a cat."

    Stops and thinks to herself...

    "or was it the opposite"

    XDD

    LOL "Hai..Hanshin."

  • "Hanshin =3"

  • You can see why they call this the Seinfeld of animes.

  • The fact that Osaka didn't blink and the lady staring made this hillarious

  • Hanshin is actually a nickname for a district in Osaka and Kobe, I believe. It's not a demigod of rebellion, or whatever. I know because it says so on the actual Azumanga Daioh dvds and in the translator's notes in the Azumanga Daioh manga omnibus I have. Sorry, but whoever gave you that translation is wrong.

  • @LackOfPaitents I think it's both actually. It means the region AND the spirits. In another translation of this episode, they actually explain it's both. If you're gonna take it as a spirit, part of the reason for the lady's expression (and the fact that they don't actually show that doll) is because it's bad luck to show them and they're not supposed to have physical bodies. Only Osaka I guess. :)

  • @LackOfPaitents Yeah the kanji (or hanzi for me, I know Mandarin) for Hanshin is 阪神. I think whoever translated this just used something like google translate, the second term ”神“ is "shen" in pinyin which means "god" or spirit.

So anyway: Hanshin refers to a physical place, it doesn't mean anything like "god"... For me that mistranslation ruins the joke.

  • @LackOfPaitents Yes, you're just right. That translation is nonsense at 0:46. Hanshin is an urban area between Osaka Kobe. And the baseball team which Hanshin Electric Railway running in this area owns is Hanshin Tigers. Osaka speaks about Hanshin Tigers.

  • This episode today was brought to you by the word hanshin.

    H-A-N-S-H-I-N. Hanshin!

  • i wish i can make that lady's face.

  • Osaka has one creepy stare....

  • Todays word on the street is...Hanshin

  • best animu ever bitches!!

  • So Hanshin = Japanese version of the Chutulu plushie?

  • Whats that small thing in the corner? Hanshin. O_O Hanshin... Yes. O_O Hanshin. 8D

  • OH MY GAH

  • Osaka is by far my favorite, for some insane reason I can totally relate with her.

  • every moment with Osaka is a funny one ^_^

  • 0:35 maybe that how Osaka sees Tsuutenkaku tower in real life

  • the thing at 0:30 just looks like a giant jellybean lmao

  • Hanshin

    O-O Hanshin...

    Hai

    O-O

    Hanshin

    ROFLMAO

  • Hanshin... O_O

  • Isn't Hanshin a place in Kansai? I don't see anything about it being a demon.

  • @ferretyluv

That's what the government WANTS you to think MAN!

  • Hanshin is the center of Osaka not a demigod xD

  • @ItsRobinWhoTalks

    阪神.

阪 HIllside in Chinese, second Kanji of Osaka in Japanese.(大阪)I guess it means big hillside, or something like that.

    神 God

    阪 Han 神 Shin

Osaka is very fond of word games, and sometimes she says things that mess with your head.

When you throw town names into the mix, things get worse.

Ex:Los Angeles - Comes from Spanish los ángeles- lit. the angels. Taken to mean city of angels.

For more fun, look up Tsuutenkaku. Oh the delicious irony.

  • @Bolatium the city of the angels, aren't angels beings of light?... so that means you're dead if your are there right? you have to have died if you are where the angels... are...

DON'T GO TO LOS ANGELES! STAY AWAY FROM THE LIGHT! DON'T GOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

  • o_o *looks at Osaka* *looks back* o_o "Hanshin." *looks at Osaka* *looks back* o_o

    ... yep.

  • Sakaki cant make things. Hai.

  • Several elements add to the creepy yet hilarious mood of this scene:

    1. The lady's face

    2. The fact that Osaka stares and never blinks

    3. The repetition

    4. The adorable bear ears

Without any one of these four elements, the impact would be decreased tenfold.

  • @trumpeterjen

Yeah, you're absolutely right in everything you said. It's interesting how those little details makes a scene like this makes it funny and memorable, right?

  • @trumpeterjen Yeah, thats why I find it hard to find other good comedic animes. The energy of the dialogue and events in really give this anime lots of life

  • @trumpeterjen Number two alone would be enough to make me soil myself.

  • @trumpeterjen you forgot the way she says "hai"

  • @tuseroni That goes under "3. The repetition."

  • @trumpeterjen not quite because its not the repetition of "hai" but the mater-of-factually way in which she says it. as though no more need elaborated.

  • @trumpeterjen you only state random facts because there's nothing funny about this. you weeaboos make me sick.

  • @Erbtsop I'm not a weaboo, you idiot. I barely watch anime/read manga at all. Don't be close-minded. If you don't think it's funny, don't bother watching it. This may come as a surprise to you, but different people have different senses of humor.

    Obvious troll is obvious.

  • @Erbtsop

Thanks to you I learned a new word, I really appreciate that.

However your post concerns me, if something so irrelevant as a "weeaboo" is already enough to make you sick you will probably die an early and very painful death caused by active gastric ulcer, you should try to relax...

  • @trumpeterjen Don't forget the way Osaka says "hai"

  • @trumpeterjen isnt the lady Nyamo

  • @EeryEarthbound ...?

  • @trumpeterjen gym teacher

  • @EeryEarthbound No, it's just some random lady. Nyamo's with her class, and she wears her hair differently.

  • @trumpeterjen With out these there would be NO VIDEO, so i could care less about how much it would be impacted. LOL WITH OUT THE CREME AND CHOCOLATE I WOULD HAVE ENJOYED THAT OREO 3/4ths as much. sorry im a little drunk so i might be overreacting to your comment.

  • @VictorAdam007 ...

Alrighty then...I'm just gonna leave that where it is.

  • Hai.

  • The womans face was EPIC

  • Woman: "What's that second one in the corner?" Osaka: "Hanshin." Woman: "O.O...Hanshin..." Osaka: : "hai; Hanshin." Woman: "O.o"

  • Hanshit.

  • I personally found the tall girl's part funny too...

  • is it just me, or does the way she says "hanshin" over and over, and ends with a "sum up" way, sound like she is on a "teach yourself japanese course"

    "listen and repeat.....hanshin..................Hanshin".

  • "Hanshin desu. Hanshin..............hai" lol

  • I would do something like that... ^^;

  • oh Osaka...

  • lol I love Osaka!

  • You laugh now.

You won't laugh when Osaka owns all your asses.

  • @lavenderblossom

    I will be happy

  • @Dietcoke998

    Muahhaha!

  • ROFL xD

    hanshiiin.

  • lmfao!!!!

  • Hanshin.

    Hanshin.

    Hanshin.

  • 0:51 What....t he..... f*ck......

  • The lady's like, "OH MY GAH"

  • does anyone know which episode this is from cause I can't seem to find it

  • @pgroms

just go on an anime episode list guide and look up what episodes it could be in the future. I'll do it for you for this.

if you look on an episode list guide, while keeping in mind that this scene happened during a school festival, you can conclude that it is either in episode 7 or episode 16.

This is much easier than waiting 4 days for a response.

  • @MrSuperPhun or the SupidKid6296 answers him after one day couse i think he knows best couse he made the video...

  • @masteralex62

Well SupidKid6296 didn't tell him after one day. He didn't get an answer until I told him. Also, as the common saying goes, "Give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and he is fed for his life."

  • @MrSuperPhun i said "or"...

  • @masteralex62

I noticed you said "or". But that "or" didn't happen, so i went ahead and told him what he should do instead in the future. I found the scene after he asked in 5 minutes. ez. it is always better to take actions into your own hands. it is the fastest way, in most cases.

  • @MrSuperPhun i know

  • so cuuutee, Osaka)

  • Osaka has no artistic style. XD She calls that a Hanshin. XD

  • That lady is awesome.

  • Hanshin! XD

  • lol the lady is like SAY WHAT?!

  • Osaka is adorable

  • The lady's double take is priceless!

  • Comment removed

  • Im from Hanshin area. This "Hanshin" definitely means Hanshin Tigers baseball team...

  • The comedic timing in this show is impeccable!

  • Osakas off topic day dreams and slow actions are what make her funny

  • If I like Lucky Star will I like this O: ?

  • @iAmbiant probably

  • @iAmbiant mmm, depends, if you like long pauses

  • @iAmbiant I think Lucky Star might've gotten some influence off of Azumanga Daioh. In the first manga they actually reference to it. I actually just looked it up. In episode 19, page 109, strip "Lover of Festivals", their teacher says "In the manga that you like and stuff...they decorate with plush toys and wear costumes" and the video clip above is when they're actually doing that.

  • this off topic but i love the music in this anime, it reminds me of less than jake or they might be giants or both together cuz the music is so silly yet has like a ska feeling to it

  • HAI....Hanshin lol

  • One question, how would you react to osaka?

  • Why did they just do 26 episodes of this?? Im addicted! I want more!! GAAAH!!!

  • What makes this show so brilliant and piss all over things like Lucky Star is how it makes jokes with so little. It knows when to use pauses and silence. It's genius

    Hanshin

    o_o

  • @tkhushrenada

Lucky Star is at the same level of this. Don't EVER! call ANY show better than Lucky Star

  • @theriseofJ lucky star is not better than azumanga, azumanga is priceless

  • @HitomiNee

I thinks it's fairer to say I love them both, but azumanga IS generally better.

  • @fireheart890 Tsutenkaku...Hanshin...

  • I think the "Hanshin" is the yellow doll at 0:06.

  • Amazing. Just Amazing.

  • "Hanshin."

-lady stares at Osaka in disbelief.-

    "Hanshin...."

    "Yes."

    -stares at Osaka again-

    "Hanshin."

  • osaka's face is pricless

  • I have a joke where when my friends are trying to remember something, I just say 'Hanshin' in the exact same tone that Osaka uses. No one gets it because I'm the only anime fan in my group. xD

  • I love how calmly and matter-of-factly Osaka says it to the woman. It's also her face - she has this very funny, very strange dopey expression on her face.

Also, I think it's hilarious how she says it again at the end of the video - as if it helps reinforce the strangeness of what she says.

  • Osaka is adorable

  • There is no limit to Osakas cuteness!

  • After the lady's WTF moment, Osaka says hai with such calmness and maturity that I reminded that particular moment to listen and watch again the lady's WTF expression again.
