I don't understand this and don't know whether it is just tones or actual words - all I know is when I listen to it I feel calm, peaceful and deeply relaxed
There is no faith involved in buddhism sry kids. Mantras per se have a tantric effect, as a translation or meaning it doesnt have like doing translations simbols per simbols something you can say "oh this mantra means 'everything is cool'" but there are explanations.
Search on the internet the explanation for the "Vajra Guru Mantra" its the explanation of the Om Ah Hung Vajra Guru Padme Siddhi Hung. It's a very long explanation and explains syllable per syllable one by one, you can divide the mantra in 2 parts, 3 parts, 6 parts etc. With very different meanings... but if you are not a buddhist or have studied this probably you are not going to understand it.
And also sanskrit and tibetan syllables are said to be connected to certain parts of the body so the vibration effects the energy (prana) in the body in a certain way
Screw faith - I have never heard a Buddhist master asking anyone to have faith. Buddhism is something to experience and not to believe in blindly. Some tantric texts are however only given to people who have had the practice and empowerments to understand and use them.
There is a vast difference between faith and belief friend. Faith, comes from the conscious experience of the truth, belief is born of ignorance (to ignore, lack knowledge). Where we have experienced, we have faith, where we have lack of experience, we fall on belief. In order to engender faith, it becomes necessary to experience, in order to experience, it is necessary to practice, to work.
@CrestOfTheShield belief comes from experience of truth, faith asks you to believe something which has not been proven. Your arguement is flawed however i will not taint this awesome thread with an arguement. peace be with you.
@CrestOfTheShield edited (not sure if my last post got canceled) faith requires belief in somethign which has yet to be proven (i.e any religeon, we have no actual evidence to prove that any exist, im agnostic and im happy that way, you dont need religeon to be a good person) belief requires evidence to convince the mind of the fact. Basing Faith on something which is arguementative is not grounds for a belief of "consicous experience" as nobody will ever be certain of your personal experience.
do some research on Mantra. its essentially a prayer that is repeated several times in the buddhist practice. every mantra means something different and is used for different purposes.
This is like watching a French film without studying French and saying that you could not understand it. But just because you couldn't, doesn't mean that the French cant. These monks are Tibetan, they're chanting in classical Tibetan (which they have studied), so they do understand.
@shirosakijin That's fine for them. My point is that people here are calling it so wonderful, without understanding any of it. I wouldn't watch a French movie or listen to speech in French and cheer it on, never knowing what is being told to me. How does that make any sense? If its just sounds, then someone should say that. But if its actual words, then words have meaning.
Wow. WOMAD. (World of Music,Art, and Dance) I saw this a WOMAD tour in '94 headlined by Peter Gabriel. I think he started it. Interesting stuff there!
I was sick in bed a while ago and i taught myself how to sing like this. I dont know if i have a gift or something because i read it takes alot of practice. Interestingly these guys cant go very low, smaller stature in asians tends to lead to higher voices, and i can go much deeper then their deepest voice.
This is a great Relaxation, when we meditate hearing them over 40 minutes, it is like to be in Paradise! I have heard them today already in my leaving room! WOW! :)
They are causing their vocal cords to make three separate tones at the same time. It's a secret how they are trained to be able to do that. It's said to be a sound one either loves or fears.
These monks have made at least 2 cassettes of this with music, which I have. Mickey Hart got involved with presenting this sound to the world, bless him.
This type of chanting is actually done as resonating deep in the throat, it's not quite their "voice". Each monk is chanting 2 or 3 separate tones, and the resonating tone is very low. I believe that normally this type of chanting is a prayer for those present and/or everyone in the world to attain enlightenment.

I'm, frightened to say the least. It is either the harmonious beuty of the universe, or all things that drive men mad.

Why is there never an explanation of what is being said? How can people go along with this when they don't even understand the meaning?
Yesica1993 2 years ago
According to the ancient texts, the prayer being said is too scared to translate, that's why they disguise it with their voices.

I really hope you mean sacred(not scared)One little misspell and the whole world is in panic... peace
