I remember seeing these in Comet for £400, the same price at the time as the Sinclair QL computer which they also sold at the time. Funny thing is a good one to a collector fetches more that that now. These were sold to help fund a 'proper' electric car. Sinclair may have had a 'G-Wiz' before Reva.
My mom purchased a 50cc scooter in the US in '80 for $550. If I remember right, the C5 sold for about 3 times that here. My memory is a bit shaky on the exact amount so if you find out differently, let me know.
@elementalwiz theres one in very good condition on ebay at the moment for £600. the price of them nowadays varies greatly on the condition. i'm also trying to buy one at the moment
My friend had one of those around ten years ago, just like that one , except it was just a pedal version, no motor. The pedal version was tons of fun, that one must be a blast.
Clive Sinclair was with his Ideas way ahead of his time! Show me today -any kind- of affordable electric car or bike; you will find nearly nothing on the market. The cheapest electric Bike costs about €900, a good one up to 3K and what you got? Nothing. A bike with a small engine, a accupack and some electronics. And the smallest electric car costs about 10k and needs each two years fresh batteries for €3k. No real improvements in all those years since the C5.
how weird that the guy was a legend and these have been around long enough to make the world a cleaner place to live in, but no!! how you were all so very very wrong watch and cry!
no licence, no road tax, classified as a bicycle i think, we own one brand new, still has an original sinclair letter in the boot with their telex number on it :D who here remembers telex ?
Fun, but not an improvement on the bicycle on one hand, or the car. Can't think of a transport situation where the C5 would be the best option.

@elementalwiz
I think it was mainly because they were really expensive. I thought it was a neat idea too, but the price was way beyond my means.
deezynar 7 months ago
@deezynar They weren't that expensive. 300 £ as far as I know. Compared to a moped/scooter it's quite reasonable.

That was a Bodie & Doyle-style braking manoeuver at 0:27, you should have rolled out with a Browning shouting "cover me!"

@elementalwiz yep, anyone over the age of 12 can drive them on the road without need for a license or tax!

@x19710. I hope I never see a 12 year old driving one these on the M25. That's as old as he will ever be.
