  • Do you notice the long line of planes waiting to take off?!?! Thats the busiest airport rite there....

  • i like the engine sounds

  • How did you take this if you are not allowed to have electronics on for takeoff and landing.

  • @xyz4565AT do the math

  • Going on one of these tomorrow!!!

  • @DingusHead4554 It is an international airport open to many airlines, but is Delta's main North America hub.

  • is this like Delta's Airport or something?

  • @MayorMcCheese Atlanta IS Delta's main hub. Just sayin'.

  • Sorry i messed up on "767or767(not sure)" it should be 767or777(not sure)

  • Planes behind yours:Delta MD- 8? / MD- 9?, CRJ 200 OR 700 or 900, , B737, 757, 767Or767(not sure), 757, another MD- 8?/9?, 737, md8?/9?, 757 AmericanAirlines-Not sure could be a 737 Delta- MD8?/9?, When did Delta get that turboprop? IDK, Another MD- 8?/ 9?. Thats the end.

  • MD-88 = Musical Delight # 88

  • AWESOME!!! Love the sound of your camera! Capturing the music of two JT8D-200's in all their glory. Long live the Mad Dog. Hopefully the MD80 will be around for a long time to come.

  • awesome video!!! I searched for a video to hear the engine wind up during take off, Thank you for sharing!

  • qwik question when taking off . why does the engines sound like they power down ? i was just wondering when i play fsx im full throttle till i take off then push the throttles to 80 percent .

  • what seat # is this

  • Probably the best engines out of ANY commercial aircraft.

  • nice engine sound!

  • Lol this is defidently a Delta hub

  • Beast , C how dat thang took off : )

  • DEAM that planes going fast :p

  • love the JT8Ds!! Why is this a full thrust takeoff? At 0:30 the pilot probably thought of slowing down but at 0:37 he changes his mind anyways.

  • woops didn't mean to do that twice

  • gotta love the engines, nice goin to BDL

  • gotta love the engines

  • dont you ever get that feelings when as soon as you takeoff you feel lightheaded? or light? I do!

  • @eaglez4evr

    Yup, I do as well.

  • Great video! I have been fortunate to fly on them with Continental, TWA, AA, and Delta. 2 weeks ago I was seated in 10A and it was extremely quiet. I usually sit near the rear of an MD-80 series A/C though to experience the sound of the P&W JT8D's!

  • damn! that's the longest and fastest takeoff I've ever witnessed! one thing I will never do again is sit in the back of a crj 700 or any t-tailed regional jet. the noise is excruciating!

lol only one American airlines plane xD

  • why is this a full thrust take off

  • @Iluvbadgers during the summer... almost all planes need greater takeoff distance due to the hot summer air. hot air is less dense than cold air. as a result pilots need to go to full thrust so they can get off the ground. in additon md's are known to eat up a lot of runway before takeoff..since they are required to use up 7500ft before lift off... full thrust is needed to get off the ground.

  • ...oooooo that JT buzzsaw is sweeeet to the ear!

  • I dont think I have ever heard a pilot adjust and re adjust the thrust so much on takeoff before, like pick a setting already, lol

  • @frtguy80 I noticed that lol. Couldn't quite decide where he wanted to leave it haha. Love it.

  • @frtguy80 lol, the passengers are probably like wtf is wrong with the pilot?

  • @Gerald97241 Either that or WTF is wrong with that plane, lol

  • @frtguy80

I hear that. Just when you think you're safe from throttle jazzers... along comes another blapper.

  • @frtguy80 My guess is the autothrottle was inoperative and the pilot monitoring was working the engines manually. Usually the A/T is engaged right at the beginning of the takeoff roll and the throttles "clamp" at the specified thrust setting after reaching 50 or 60 knots.

  • WHAT TYPE OF DELTA PLANE IS THE SECOND ONE...ITS SOOO TINY...LMAO

  • @free2rhyme29100 crj-700

  • @free2rhyme29100 either that or a crj-200

  • @alpena7 yeah its a -200

  • @111meikle after i looked at it. i new tht

  • LOL take off line...delta delta delta delta delta delta...AMERICAN....delta delta delta delta lmao

  • @Tomk916 well ATL is home to Delta's corporate office!

  • @jm45d It isn't just the home of the corporate office, it is the base of operations for what was, until a few weeks ago, the largest airline in the world. It is also why Hartsfield is consistently the busiest airport in the world.

At any rate, I'm flying from Atlanta to New Orleans next month on an MD 88. I've flown in rickety ancient CH-46 helicopters in Iraq, but I'm nervous about this flight. Go figure. Thanks @shoupmill for posting this video.

  • Delta, Delta, Delta, Delta, Delta, Delta, Delta, Delta, Delta, Delta, Delta, American, wait!! Did I see an American!! holt shit! danm delta, lay off a bit..

  • @SkyWestCRJPilot no im talking about the bins below wing im not even judging i like the plane its just the pit or bin i dont like

  • i dont fucking cargo bins are so small

  • there is nonthing like the md-80 great video

  • That was a long take off...

  • @amatorynumber thats what she said

  • @LotsOfGreatStuff who said what? i'm lost!!!! :-)

  • @amatorynumber its a joke,

  • @LotsOfGreatStuff it has to be something cultural i'm not aware of :-) i'm not american, that is, if you are... i'm assuming it

  • @amatorynumber why were u flying to hartford?

  • @LotsOfGreatStuff was I? I'm getting more and more mystified!! :-P

  • I love MD 80's

  • @paespi

I love 'em too. I wish they weren't disapearing. =[

  • Geesh,Alot of traffic!!!!

  • I used to hate flying "Mad Dog's". But just like in the Military, you grow to love the particular aircraft you're assigned to.

  • Well,

Us old military types hope you grew to at least like her!

  • This is because this is Deltas Major Hub,

I went to Atlanta one time, I saw all Delta and one United flight. ONE

  • delta..delta..delta..delta..delta..american..delta..delta

  • Hey, the old control tower was still up, LOL!!!

  • I get nervous when flying, so i figure that i'll watch videos like this everyday until the flight, so perhaps it won't be so scary. It's good to hear the noise of the engines, for it's the unexpected noises that get me scared, like when the wheels come up, or with turbulance. And of course how high the plane gets up to, that's not fun either. Wish me luck!

  • Just sleep the entire flight and you'll be fine!!!

  • MD-88..annoying engine sound...GE-90's.....thats the engine

  • MD-88 is my favorite jet of all,,,Great sound being in the back,,,Worked in Atl for several years,,thanks for sharing your video with all of us,,,

  • Comment removed

  • why dont boeing just make a modern

verson of the md88 with better engines and a updated panel...man they would sell so many but i guess they have their hands full with the b787..

    >)

  • I agree MD 88 is better than the 737 series. It is more comfortable than 737.

  • American Airlines trying to blend in with all those Delta's in line for takeoff! lol

  • Delta should replace the MD-88 for 737-700's and 737-800's... i really don't like the MD-88

  • No they should not replace the md-80 is one of the best sounding planes and a flight on those is way more fun than the 737-700,and 800s. But sadly its happining........

  • i dont like the md88 because they dont have any video screen, and the 737-700 and 800's have personal screens...

the md-80 scares me! they are old, however the sound is excellent i really love it

  • Comment removed

  • The MD-88 has a larger capacity. It's better for short - medium range flights.

  • So much louder than it's younger brother..

  • almost every plane in atlants is delta

  • So is it just me, or does it sound like the pilot let off of the throttles somewhat at about the :38 point?

Maybe just my imagination, but sure sounded like it. Great video!

  • Actually, what you heard was the autothrottles taking control of the takeoff thrust setting. MD-80's are known for engine flameout if the N1 and EPR reading get too high (over-temp). MD-80's never take off at full power; if they were to, especially on a long runway (such as the 11889 ft Rwy 27R as shown in the video), they would burn out the engines.

  • As a former firefight working air fields, if a plane had engine flame out issues the FFA would not certify the enigine for use. Auto throttle is for fuel saving only. It allows minimal fuel use for take off. Throttle settings are ajustable for weight or wind conditions. All pilots can overide to full at any time for any duration.

  • my last plane to daytona was delta connection like a 1 and 30 minutes flight

  • The md 88 is an awesome plane and the seat u were sittin in made it sound even better

  • I am really worried that i have to go on the MD 88 on monday. It might be a A300 A320 or A300 which i am hoping it is. however it it might be an MD88 can anyone tell me if this aircraft is good cus i really dont like MD's.

    Thanks.

  • The MD88 has an excellent safety record. My brother flew them for more than a decade during a long airline career and he considered the MD88 his favorite. The video was taken right next to the aft engines. Otherwise, they are remarkably quiet. They are every bit as safe as the Airbus aircraft you mentioned.

  • Wow thanks for getting back quickly.

Im not botherd about the noise at all i love the noise! lol espaecially take off!!

Anyway, i have actually just found out that i am going on the A321 so i feel better. But if i did go on the MD88 then i would feel better after that comment.

The one reason i wanted to go with Airbus is that i could record the take off and see the engnes. But the MD88 is rear mounted.

Thankyou anyway. I shall have the video on here in a few weeks =]

  • its a great plane as long as you arent in the back by those JT-8's!!!

  • @ATCOTractor yeah, man, they are pretty safe these birds!!! I can only think of a couple of major accidents involving the MD-88 off the top of my head (The Madrid one in 2008 and the Alaska Airlines off the USA west coast) while I can remember about 10 at least involving most of the other usual aircraft types, 737, A320, 747, MD-11 aka DC-10 etc. And this plane has been on air for a long time!!!!

  • Mate, no worries it was last august lol anyway an A320 is practically uncrashable called fly by wire yeah!

  • @ATCOTractor uncrashable???? ummmm, there are more accidents involving fly-by-wire systems recently than hidrolic systems (such as boeing's)... that's why some ppl say 'if it's not boeing i'm not going' :-D

  • @ATCOTractor the fly-by-wire system has a problem... the computer will try to do what it wants, and in extreme situations, if you don't know how to interact with the computer system in an out of the ordinary case, you are fucked!!!! not the same with boeing... oh no!!!! I hate the joystick planes, as I call them!!! :-)

  • @amatorynumber erm you say that but your not a pilot you dont know shit and other people agree with me just look at my original question!!

  • @ATCOTractor sorry mate, but i don't see why you got all aggressive there... I was giving my opinion, that's all, and very gracefully if I may say so... No, I am not a pilot, but I am the team leader of an air traffic control center in a major european airport and I know a bit about planes... so... shut up??? thanks

  • @ATCOTractor by the way, if I got all excited and stuff it is not coz I was angry or anything... I just like the subject and think ppl here are good sports... I guess I was wrong. :-)

  • @ATCOTractor Only thing you need to know is if your seat is in the rear and near the engine. Its very loud and get no window view next to the engine.

  • @ATCOTractor what's the matter with you?? safest travel method...

  • @ATCOTractor MD80 is one of the finest airliners of all time, and the descendant of the mighty Douglas DC-9 series, an aircraft that helped shape aviation as we know it today. Whatever aircraft you ended up on I trust it was a pleasant journey. PS...heck with EADS products, if it isn't Boeing I'm not going :)

  • @ATCOTractor I would take a MD-88 OR A DC-9 over any aircraft anytime.

  • wtf 45 seconds for a tke off! this md 88 sucks!

  • man listen to those JT8D-212s! Awesome!

  • I'll be on one of those headed to Atlanta in 22hours lol

  • is the md-88 delta good? im going on it next week!

  • their very nice, The last plane i was on was a delta md-88

  • well yesterday i did that and it was a md-88 and the weather and the view was IDENTICAL to this!

  • in ten days im going to be takeing off on a md-88 from atl to bos

  • Yo I am flying a Delta 1854 from ATL-BOS on July 1st, are we on the same plane?, I am also flying MCO-ATL before that and on the 7th im flying a 737-800 BOS-MCO

  • same, but to florida :o

  • Just flew one home tonight from ATL to BOS. A little choppy due to all the foul weather but I love the "Mad Dog"! Wondering when Delta will be retiring them. The one I was on is over 20 years old...

  • they'll be gone when Delta starts orderin 737s as replacements.

  • 00:49 O.O SUPER RARE AT ATL!!!

  • i've been on a boeng 717 they look quite alike but the 717 makes hardly any noise.

  • I flew out of Atlanta on an MD-88 they are such noisy bastards. They sound like they'll never make it off the ground.

  • nice view until clouds

  • 2 DAYS YES...

  • im fling this plane in exatly 6 days YYYYAAAYYY i love delta and check out my videos everyone

  • 0:49 One of these things is not like the other...

  • Hah the lonely American Boeing 738

  • I love Delta Airlines ! It's the best airline company

  • Was that a 737-200 at 0:45?

  • Man, there were alot of delta's (and an American) waiting for takeoff on that runway. Was that runway being just used for takeoffs or both takeoffs and landings. Also i think i saw a 732 waiting in that long line

  • No runway at Atlanta is used for both. Because of the extremely high traffic, ATL has three runways for landings, and two for takeoffs.

  • Oh ok gotcha.. thanks :)

  • no prob

  • True - the MD-80s (nicknamed "Mad Dogs") are getting a bit old, but don't worry, though: Delta and AA (who fly a lot of them) are gradually but progressively retiring them in favor of 737-700/800s.

  • I love the 767-400, how long is Delta going to keep that around?

  • 764-400s are new (being introduced as recently as 2000/01), and are mainstay on most of Delta's trans-Antlantic and highest-density transcon routes; they'll most likely be around for maybe 20 or so years.

  • 737-800s are boring compared to the MD80 IMO. 764s though are a bit interesting as they aren't too common.

  • What's there to worry about ? Delta's MD88's were delivered between '87 and '93 and the aircraft has a great safety record...better in fact than the 737.

Do have have concerns about the 757 also? Most of them are around 20 years old as well.

  • yeah im flying on a delta md-88 kinda nervous about it could you tell me a few more good facts about it

  • No worries. I just flew one last Thursday from Atlanta to Boston. Very smooth ride and like the other posters have said, a very safe aircraft!

    Enjoy your flight!

  • ;) thnks

  • Flew a Delta 757-200 from Boston to Atlanta.

Another aircraft with a very safe flying history. As a matter of fact most of the incidents involving her had to do with pilot error and not with the aircraft.

  • Next Generation 737s have a good safety record

  • nothin wrong w/ delta but i hate that plane because on my last flight all i saw was engine.

  • you cant see all engine on this plane cuz they are in the back on the tail not on the wing

  • ehm yes u can if u are in the very last seat. may differ per version and/or airline but hell yeah u can sit next to and engine ! just to clear it up :)

  • @boeing737600 in the las row the window looks at only engine. it was loud and booring

  • yeah i love delta, it's nice to fly them to DAB (Daytona Beach) to visit my bro. they usually have md-88's, with the occasional CRJ-200 and B 737. the real treat though is landing in atlanta. there's another plane landing parallel to you! and that "fly delta jets" certainly gives a nostalgic feel to the airport, doesn't it?

  • lol 00:49 Delta, Delta, Delta... AMERICAN!!!

  • dude thanks for riding my airline hope you had fun

  • I hear the new control tower at Hartsfield has kept down delays, nice looking tower.

  • nice engine sound...i love the atlanta airport

  • I, myself, am more of a fan of the JT8D Basic series... Sure I like the sound of the JT8D-200, but to me, it seems like they took a good, smoky, noisy, greasy engine and tweaked it to make it more environmentally friendly, and that, my friends, is not what the JT8D is about.

  • I simply favor the CFM56 over the JT8D. When Boeing came out with the 737 Classic (-300/400/500), the aircraft was re-engined. McDonnell-Douglas should've re-engined the DC-9 with the CFM56 beginning with the DC-9-80 series .

    CFM56 engines are more efficient

  • Shoulda, Coulda, Woulda, pal.

  • The CFM56s are quieter and more fuel efficient.

That's why mostly, even the 737 Classics outclassed the MD-80s, except the MD-83 and MD-87

  • No, Fleet Commonality was the selling point for the 737. NOT the engine. Southwest didn't order the 737-300 because of its quieter engine. The main reason was because it would cost very little to train pilots. They all knew how to fly the 737 already. Nobody buys an airplane because of it's engine. I have never heard of an operator who chose one aircraft over another because "it has a quieter engine."

  • I know. It's just that McDonnell Douglas should've replaced the JT8Ds on the DC-9s with CFM56s beginning with the DC-9-80 series

  • why?!

  • CFM56s have better fuel economy than JT8Ds.

  • But the JT8D-200 Are WAYYYYY more fun and jet engine sounding than the CFM56 will ever dream of being. And i fly the M88's and they are not "fuel hogs" and most call them.

  • nice hum of the engin

  • Well isn't Atlanta a Delta hub that would explain it hehehe

  • Actually Atlanta is Delta's main and largest hub. Delta is actually based in Atlanta.

  • At 00:40 when I saw the red sign in the background, I immediatly thought of Flight Sim ROFL.

  • "Fly Delta Jets" it's been there since I was a kid

  • Yea haha I know. Been on a Delta MD-88 in Atlanta as well. Matter of fact, saw the sign when landing. Giant airport.

  • I've been through atlanta countless times. It is indeed a huge airport and very busy. Look on wikipedia, apparently the sign was not lit until recently.

  • I LOVE THAT SOUND

  • same here!

  • classic metal sounding at its best.

  • Hey what kind of camera is this?

  • I like how there were 12 Delta's lined up for takeoff and only one lonely American Airlines. It would be the opposite here at ORD:)

  • yeah thats atlanta. its amazing how huge that airport is.

  • a lot of old Delta aircraft in this one. a B732 and a 767-200, plus the 1997 color scheme

  • It ain't noisy if you sit in front of the wings! Plus they look cool and the 3-2 seating is a plus.

  • dude.....that comment was totally stupid. Why even compare an MD-88 with a 757? First of all. a JT8D-212 from an Md88 only spits out around 21,000 to 23,000 pounds of thrust while a 757s PW 40 Sometimes and or the RB211s spit around 45,000 pounds of thrust. Two different aircraft developed for two different size markets. thats like comparing a 15 passenger Ford Club Wagon van with a 45 foot, 55 passenger MCI Luxury coach...it jus dont make any fuckin sense....

  • Delta Delta Delta Delta Delta Delta Delta Delta Delta Delta Delta Delta American Delta Delta Delta Delta Delta Delta lol!

  • md 88's are nice. i fly 'em frequently between ORD and DAB via ATL.

  • I have to admit it that I love that obnoxious, noisy, and annyoing MD-88 noise.

  • I love that sound!!!!!!!!
