I was an exchange student in Edgehill road in the 2010- 2011 and what I can say is that coventry isnt a great and secure place as it used to be... I can say it because of my personal experiences
My dad owned the dry cleaneing store on coventry and hampshire, across from irv's and pee wee's. as a kid in elementary school i loved going into all the hippie shops; the leather store, the pet shop, the head shops and a moroccan shop as well. fond fond memories of that haight street of cleveland heights.
I lived on Hessler Street and later Cleveland Heights from 79-82- it was a great area back then- very cool- bohemian- cheap- and authentic- We used to read Pekar's comics then too- great interview but no mention of Arabica?
Thanks for the comments. We worked off of pictures, but I don't recall seeing any with Arabica in them. Who knows, maybe Harvey will come back for a second round! By the way, check out his Aug. 3 edition from Vertigo (AS Season 2, #3) - he wrote about being interviewed.
These were wonderful to watch. One question though...at the end if this video he mentioned he had to go because of time constraints, but said he would return later to do it again.
Would you also have these video/memories posted too.
I grew up in NE Ohio and found these fascinating. Thanks for posting them...
We haven't set up a time for a second interview as yet, although we are thinking of doing some more videos on Cleveland Heights history. Thanks for your comments!
I lived on Hampshire and Cadwell, 2 blocks from Coventry from 1964-67 We were a Jewish family that moved out after the Hough Riots. I remember Van Horne Bakery, Irv's, Pic n' Pay, Carrol's Drugs (and hunky Brian who worked there). I walked to Coventry School daily and great memories of the homes and neighbors there. We left just when Coventry started to change. Would love to hear others' memories of the days before Hippiedom!
Great video. Sadly, only a hundred people have watched it. It's symptomatic of the dumbing-down of America. Nothing good is on right now on my 300 cable TV channels...everything targeted at the center of the bell curve or lower. Youtube is a blessing.
Thank you for posting this six part interview with Harvey Pekar. It was so fascinating to hear him talk about the neighborhood he lived in in Cleveland, and the personalities of the people, it made it all seem so interesting and vital.

Would love to hear from any former employees of Damm and Associates. I'm looking for Henry John Damm, son of Dr. Damm.
Very good series, enjoyed Coventry in the 1970s.

Too many graphics interruptions near the endings.

The producer should have also done this: link "part 2" as a reply of "part 1", that way when you finish watching part 1, you just click a link below.
Yes, I understand that's a solution for dumbs, but what one won't do to promote one's favourite piece of art ;)
PS I've watched "Crumb" (the movie) on a French channel in Poland. That's how I've found out about Pekar. I'm grateful...
