Thanks for this. Very informative. I'm not African American (I'm not American at all) and for me the word means diaper. When I first heard the Stevie Wonder lyric "nappy-headed boy" used in reference to his childhood I had assumed it referred to him being very young ie. in diapers. So, thanks for your elucidation.
I don't care too much for the word nappy. I like the word abundant better. Or words like kinky, coily, spirally, or bountiful. But abundant is like the main one. It means more than enough. You did a good job with this video. And you are beautiful.
Lady this was awesome!!!! I love my nappy hair and I admit had to grow into loving my God given naturally nappy hair and guess what I'm mad that I wasnt told as a child that it was beautiful it took me till bout 17 to get my first relaxer as a child press and curl so most of the time we are raised from babies trying to straighten the NAPPY out and never experiencing the HAPPY in being ourselves! Thanks I loved every minute of your documentary you are beautiful!
Its interesting how people generally understand the english language. It seems that when others hear words that are generally not apart of their everyday language, they may ask someone what it means or recall what they have may have seen on tv; but never really take the time to do the research to understand the word and its true meaning. If more people were to research words, view & reflect on the history, I believe the general mindset of 'negative & positive' words would change.
While I don't have a problem with other naturals referring to their hair as "nappy," I personally don't have a positive relationship/history with that word so I refuse to use it in reference to mine or anyone else's hair. That being said, I still really loved how you ended this video!
As a natural myself, nappy to me means...freedom (from chemical and hair salon slavery), versatility of hair styles, adventure (nappy hair has it's own personality and you have to LEARN what makes nappy happy) and finally, BIG HAIR. I love big hair!! :-)
Nice video. I would really like to see some of these strong sistas challenging and dropping knowledge to the fellas that think that rolie polies are a bad look and a "good grade of hair" is looser. I know we don't want people to be scared to speak how they truly feel but sometimes ignorance needs to be confronted and some of these people need to be educated. So they will be embarassed next time they say anything so ignorant and maybe they will think about why they view "nappy" hair as bad
Oh you did a fantastic job with this video. I loved the interviews and the perspective of others of the word. And at the end that is the perfect comeback! It is the look that all us naturals are going for, really! I can't keep my hands out my head I love the texture so much! Thx for the video!
I think you did a great job with this video. I dont know about you but I love my naps. I hate it though when we say good grades or bad grades of hair. We really have to start listening to ourselves.
Thanks for sharing this perspective. I recently did a video on this subject based on an incident with my oldest daughter. The word has always held a negative connotation for me. I don't believe that I can embrace it. I don't care if others describe their hair in those terms. I won't use it to describe my hair and encourage those close to me to rethink using the term.
i really dont like the word nappy. our hair is exstremely kinky, curly or lamb or wool like hair. nappy was a word to ppl with that hair texture down. do u agree
I agree that I don't like the word and your description of our hair and that the word was and still is used predominantly as a put down of our hair texture. For me, making Nappy or the other N word positive is impossible.
Hello Soror, I love this video. I am glad to see different view points. I love your hair also. It is gorgeous. Nappy has always been natural, tight curled hair in my opinion. Nappy is good hair to me. I have embraced the word and my natural hair. :)
Thanks Soror! I"m glad you enjoyed watching the vid. I always used the word nappy when I would need a retouch. So when I decided to be natural, I was basically saying I am ready to have nappy hair. Thanks for your comment!
great video!! I never really liked using the word nappy because I always heard it in a negative manner so I never use the word. I prefer tightly coiled/curly...great video =))
I'm glad you enjoyed the vid! Yeah, we started using coiled, curled, and kinky to replace nappy. I guess it sounds friendlier. Thanks for your comment!
I agree a more friendly sound because you wont here me say nappy the only time you would here me say nappy is to tell someone I don't like the word. So yes lamb hair sounds more pleasant =)
me on what the word meant.... so now my prespective has changed in a sense on the word... but I am going to dig deeper and do my own little project on the word and what it means.
thank you for this video. I personally have mixed feelings on the word nappy. and your right because society has used this word in a negative sense it some of us including myself tend to take offense to it. I actually wanted to do my own little documentary on the word nappy as well. I still will because I think it is a good topic to speak on. But thank you for this information. as you know I used the word nappy in my video and how I disapproved of the word and I did get a few comments informing
Basically, what is considered nappy is in the eye of the beholder. Its a personal description. If you consider nappy to be a negative term, you will use it in a negative context. Nappy is just an adjective; we can make it positive or negative. Its all up to the person. I think my hair looks like the nap of a carpet, even when Ive combed and moisturized it. Therefore, it can be called nappy; I would not be offended at all. Interesting video!
I, personally, do not equate the word nappy with hair in its natural state. Naps were the little balls of fabric on wool blankets and clothing. Unkept natural hair can appear like the nap of a wool blanket. I don't want my hair to look like that. I want it to be tightly coiled, curly, moisturized, or fro-ed out, but never like the naps on a blanket or rug....Just my humble opinion. Thanks for doing this video!!!!
