  • i see 7 people need 10 fingers to play this song. then man does more with 9 then most with 10

  • sounds like a bit of flanging and or delay..regardless, he's a wonderful player.

  • my fave songs on the master and the magician!

  • The Master and Musician was the best story album i ever heard any where. i bought it the first day it hit the shelf. I had a chance to see him on a tour with Hadley Hockensmith doing rythym and stuff. after a few songs into the show i just watched Hadley play because Phil was just way too over my head!! L O L

  • I always re-listen to Phil Keaggy songs because they're so awesome, and I hesitate to go on to the next song. It never ceases to amaze me that literally EVERY song is absolutely masterful.

  • A favorite of mine by the master guitarist. One that got me hooked!

  • Are there any guitar tabs available for his tunes? I would love to play like this !!

  • @MrTomanderson76 Go look on ultimate-guitar they have a good bit of them.

  • @caveman091 Thanks so much as I am a avid Phil Keaggy fan I will most certainly check it out !!!

  • @MrTomanderson76 No problem, happy to help.

  • i jized

  • oh jesus i shit my pants

  • Phil was the lead guitarist for Glass Harp in the 70's, gave his life to Christ and is one of the best in the world.

  • Is he using effects? why does his guitar sound so much better than mine, disregarding the huge skill level gap that is... lol.

  • @chesspro22k: Definitely. Sounds like a bit of delay, reverb, flanger and most of all chorus. Not a lot of all of them, though. Brilliant sound!

  • wut he duz,its freakin IMPOSSIBLE!!!!!!:D

  • wut he duz,its freakin IMPOSSIBLE!!!!!!

  • The mood this guy sets with his playing, it's like he's his own genre.

  • Wonderful, talented guitarist from Nashville who sometimes firsts with my friend Miranda Louise

  • One of my all time favorite pieces, it feels almost medieval in my interpretation. Phil Keaggy is a true musician, which sadly, is becoming hard to find these days.

  • I love that part at 1:20 It sounds almost like Bach. Phil shows us such a wide spectrum of styles of music....what a talent.

  • Making sure I say this before a troll smells me out. He doesn't play Olson's exclusively.

  • Not only is he a fantastic guitarist but he is a gifted singer/composer as well. His voice sounds like a carbon copy of Paul McCartney !!! I have also heard that he is as humble as he is talented.

  • Phil Keaggy is not only an amazing guitarist, but also a song writer/singer. He writes full songs, lyrics and all, which is something that can't be said about all other guitarist. On top of that, he has no limits in versatility. He is skilled in classical, contemporary, progressive, and blues. He is one of the best simply because he is so well rounded.

  • what guitar is that?

  • @johngoo343 Phil play's Olson's. Wonderful, expensive beasts. ;) It's only $12,500. I've been saving up... My entire adult life. Haha. Good luck!

  • @tool4lyfe thats alot of money, I want a gibson j-45 and thought that was expensive, 12,500 bucks, howd he even get that when he was starting out

  • @johngoo343 it is a James Olsen guitar

  • 2:52 is sheer perfection!

  • this guy is most definitely not one of the best guitarists of all-time hes light years behind Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Vai, Dimebag Darrell, Joe Satriani, Eddie Van Halen, Shawn Lane, John Petrucci, Jimmy Page, Zakk Wylde. He plays with melody but he plays with no balls or technique

  • @TruckDrivinShredder7 You simply don't understand musical talent then. What those guitar players do is play tech. I love JP, but he's a pure tech player. He can shred with the best of them, but ask any of them, and they'd give Phil props. You? You sound like a mere pretender.

  • @TruckDrivinShredder7 you have a lot to learn. a few years ago i would have felt the same as you. it just takes time. there's more to guitar than speed and tricks.

  • His style & originality has decidedly set him apart from all other artists. Unique in expression & delivery likened to a precision crafted watch. In other words, He's a Rolex!

  • He is awesome!!

  • Beautiful..Phil is amazing.

  • We are on a journey don't look back

  • I have been a Phil Keaggy fan since the 1970's and I get to go see him finally 7-16-10 I hope I live long enough! I know there is a world full of great guitarists but I pick Phil Keaggy as my personal favorite. That don't make me a bad feller!

  • i'm gonna try to learn from 1:18 onwards

    that sounds absolutely beautiful

  • The bass on that Olsen is just awesome! Of course, Phil really knows how to get the best out of it.

  • @Jubal24 yeah Olsen guitars sound so great and look great two. I want

one so bad. I also saw James Taylor playing one. I wonder who else does?

  • he never got world renown because of his lyrics he was immediately lumped into the christian music scene

  • does anyone know what scale he is using in this and what a common one he uses

  • @tnt420tnt smells like F Major for the first part maybe a Phrygian mode for the rest also in F. I say F cuz he tunes a half step down, and is capoed at fret 2.

  • @jnbek1972 okay thats sounds good 2 me thanks

  • Two great instrumental songs from one of my favorite Keaggy albums, The Master and the Musician...

  • ridiculous

  • I don't believe most people can understand or appreciate the accomplishments of this man. I just shake my head & pity them. He has treasures in heaven unspeakable & full of glory that he's been laying up in heaven for decades...he needs no other affirmations.

  • so old! Man this is pretty.

  • Even though it's impossible to place artists in some kind of order based on how talented, or "good" they are, I would have to say Keaggy IS the most versatile and accomplished guitarist I've ever heard or seen. If you haven't seen him, you OWE it to yourself to do so. It's an absolutely amazing experience... The Olsen guitar he's using is like the one James Taylor uses and is made in Minnesota, I believe. Keaggy played at Paul McCartney's daughter's wedding....that's a good gig!

  • Ive actually played an Olsen before. Theyre in a class all by theirselves.

  • I especially like the part that starts at 2:15

    this is an awesome song!

  • Magnificent piece of music!!... by any standard, and by any musical discipline.

  • *so Rare & Grand style, i can imagine him playing right along with Francesco Corbetta & Robert De Visee...the guitarist to King Louis XIV, he holds the baroque essence, legend :)

  • the most amazing guitarist off all time?, i just found him. i cant believe this guy isnt world famous... thats just how you know most people are ignorant music wise. every work of music from this guy is unique and ive never heard music that flows so greatly.

  • he is world famous amongst all christians in the world. But the world is worldly and commercial that is why they can't put him in mainstream music. And he wouldn't have it any other way I imagine

  • does it really matter with instrumental music?

Beethoven and Bozart were christains. (if I remember right.)

  • I know Bach deffinitley was.

  • Dude... please don't ever say stuff like this again. 1.) The Christian world takes half-rate musicians and makes them "famous"

2.) Phil Keaggy is world famous in the non-Christian world.. he's won 2nd best guitarist in the world like twice... by a non-Christian guitar magazine.... he is in mainstream music, and any guitarist worth anything will cite him as some sort of influence.

  • @marty051892 he IS world famous. When Jimi came on the Cavett show to play "purple haze" Dick sez... how's it feel to be the world's greatest guitarist? Jimi sez, I dunno, ask Phil Keaggy... he was already known in the 60's for hos work with Glass Harp, and has remained high in most polls ever since. peace out

  • @czzham AN endorsement from a famous guitarist doesn't make someone world famous and that story is just a myth.

  • @czzham Also, Glass Harp released their first album in 1970, the year Jimi Hendrix died.

  • @czzham yeah, that never happened, timelines proved that jimi hendrix never even knew that phil keaggy existed.

  • @marty051892 Personally I hold Pat Metheny in the highest regard, but he and Keaggy are cut from the same cloth musically.

  • @Abaryn, I couldn't disagree more with that last statement. Phil is uniquely innovative in creativity & style. I only need to hear 3 or 4 bars of a song to tell me if it's phil keaggy or not. ear education, you need.

  • @heycolslaw When I said cut from the same cloth I was implying they are both of the highest caliber. Frankly, musicians reach a certain point where comparing them becomes irrelevant. I like Pat Metheny more because I find his tunes suit my tastes better than Phil Keaggy's, that doesn't mean I find Phil Keaggy to be any less of an accomplished guitarist. As a musician, I find being told I need ear education offensive, especially since I was trying to compliment Phil in the first place.

  • @Abaryn I am sorry I thought since I didn't know Pat Metheny I should at least check out some of his work ...and you know what I found out? I was right, your ear does need a tune-up! After seeing10-12 videos of strictly Jazz music, I can firmly re-enforce my initial decision. He IS quick , clean & talented but complicated & hard to listen to. I find Phil is as technical as Pat but much more appealing to listen to...Sorry if that offends you.but that''s my true belief

  • @heycolslaw We'll just have to agree to disagree then.

  • @marty051892 This is on this Master and the Musician CD, think you'd like it.

  • @marty051892 actually,he is world fameous, hes the worlds best gituar player, the first best gituar player is supoosedly jimmy hindreks but when he was being reported, the reporter asked, how does it fell to be the worlds greatest gituar player, jimmy said,i dont know youd have to ask phill keaggy.

  • @missmalissa15 Please learn how to spell Jimi Hendrix.

  • @marty051892 don't worry, he is pretty well known

  • @Wilshier Yeah. I was thinking more commercial success famous... but that really isn't as great as it may sound.

  • @marty051892 Unfortunately, Christian Guitarists don't get too popular. Well the majority of them. It really is quite sad.

  • Phil you know I am your greatest fan! Well, I try to be,

and I love to play, too, although you are still the best

in my book! I remember when this album first came out

and I was at an Amway meeting, didn't really care about

the meeting, I was just playing your cassette of The Master

and The Musician at my table, tryin to turn everyone on

to your music! That was circa 1980! Wow! Loveya man!

  • oh man! all those pulloff

  • Not a lot left to say about Phil really.....He's been voted in with the top three fingerpickers and musicians in the world.....and he lives in my CD cabinet!!

  • i believe thats known as "kidnapping"

  • @edwardManfre LOL!!

  • great finger independence from his right hand..

  • :D

    :D :D

  • Phil is definately one of my heroes.

    5 stars

  • this man is my idol..ive seen him twice in concert and each time it makes me like his guitar playing even more..he is no doubt the best talented guitar player of all time..

  • @abryanc he gave a concert in Fort Wayne, In this other brother & went up to talk to him afterwards so while we were talking, I asked Phil if i could play his guitar! I couldn't believe what had just said, but you know what? He handed it to me with a smile . the next few minutes were like a dream. It didn't seem real .

  • @heycolslaw I can tell you this, he has POWERFUL hands. He likes the action high! that must be why he's so clean & every note so distinct: every space between each note is way off the fretboard.

  • Sounds like Iowa in the coolness of summertime

  • Having jus been in Iowa in the coolness of summertime (and sweated my butt off), I'm not sure where the connections lay ... but I agree that it's a good song, if we mean that. ;)

  • This piece sounds to me to be infuenced by Bach. Like some kind of boroque music.

  • There's alway going to be someone "better" if you're going to break down and tear apart for the sake of bolstering whatever argument you want to make. Be bored if helps your cause. I love the balance and contrast he brings to just about every piece, and his overall attitude makes him a fav of mine.

  • I wonder then, why you search for and watch Phil Keaggy videos if you've 'outgrown' him.

  • Entropy56. I had exactly the same experience. Yet there is something delicate and accessible about his sound that lures us time and time again to ponder the gentle stream out of which his sound comes. Wind and the Wheat has been a personal favourite of mine. A.

  • It's good that you like comments. Its nice that you won't give two thoughts about the words given here, because clearly you're just doing it for the response, right? To stir things up? That's great. Wonderful, we need something like that. We need people like you in the world. Absolutely necessary.

You give us a great example of the people we need to feel sorry for, the people who are so unfortunate. Truly! We must pity these people.

Come on, internet! Join me in feeling sorry for this guy!

  • "I'm picking up your sarcasm."

  • One of a million who love God's creation, more than His Word.

  • @Entropy56

Well you missed out on the stunning acoustic album called "beyond nature" yr 1991. There is nothing quite like it.

  • There are many great guitarists. Phil remains my favourite due to the beauty of his compositions.

  • Phil became as good as he was before he became a christian around 1970, so attributing his talent to his faith is false. He was basically aspiring to be the next Hendrix (although Phil's way better IMO). He was high on acid on Valentine's Day 1970 when his christian sister called and said his mother died in a car crash. The experience changed him forever, as he converted to christianity like his sister. Ooo I just noticed he has his guitar capoed, I must try that...

  • jcastorina, how did you know about Phil's conversion to Christianity? Does he have a book or how did you come about that story? Thanks

  • If you look it up you will find it, if you're really into musicians like Keaggy you aspire to learn things like this.

  • Yes I've been a huge Keaggy fan since1989 when a lady @ my church said he would be coming and that I should go because I love to play as well. Man I was hooked after the first show. Since then I have seen him live 8-9 times, even got him to autograph one of my guitars. I can say that he is truly a gentleman. Soo nice and caring and it really reflects back to " A walk with GOD". He is simply the best and a TRUE musician. Thanks for all the great music over the past 30+ years Phil!!

  • If you are into acoustic music listen to pretty much anyone on youtube that plays for candyrat records and you will be amazed. Candyrat are the people that sponsor Andy Mckee and others with their talent.

  • His playing is so beautiful......God bless this man!

  • finally something in standard tuning...

  • Yet he's using a CAPO. so technically it is NOT in standart.

    Fail?

  • So he's using a capo... SO WHAT? That's doesn't not make him one of the best gutarists in the world because his fingers not long enough to reach the 2nd fret.

  • ?.... My comment was a reply to someone elses.

I never said it was bad to use a capo. LOL.

  • thats beacuse hes paly chords that need 4 fingers for the cord before the bar part so it would be impossible to paly some chord you could of if oyu had 5 fingers

    ile at 1:04

  • um maestroo!!

  • He is simply amazing...

  • What brand of guitar is that?

  • Olson

  • Ownage

  • it looks like he's missing the middle finger on his right hand haha, but he's a badass

  • I actually I think it's Bb flat Major. My bad. A 1/2 step tuned down and a capo on 2nd fret. Anyone please correct me if I'm wrong.

  • I'm pretty sure this arrangement is in b minor. Anyhow, Phil Keaggy is awesome and amazing. It's a guitarist's dream to be as good as he is.

  • Then your saying that it's wonderful when a Guitarist matures into a Musician.shuts up and just plays from the heart.Right?

  • I don't understand your question. Every musician, unless your born a prodigy, has to do a lot of hard work and practice to master his kraft. You're always still learning, but you get to a certain level where you can play from your heart and not have theory or your ear be a hindrance. Theory will be become second nature and your ear will be so well trained that what you hear in your heart you can translate that to the fretboard with not much problem.

  • Well it's like Michael Hedges says in the seminars posted by type3secretion - learn the theory, know it and then forget about it all and just write from the heart.

  • This is awesome. I really like this particular arrangement how he had some intro then combined castle's call and pilgrim's flight. This is great. I know Pilgrim's Flight is in a minor, then the pilgrim's flight outro is in b minor (I believe), but what key is this one? Is he using standard tuning or some alternative tuning?

  • Infinite chops with a great sense of taste, one of the all time great melodic improvisers!

  • liked him since i was a kid. he's great, to say the least.

  • Sweet! And I got the mp3 of this, too! Keaggy RULES!!!!

  • thanks for posting this

took me right back to my youth

    nice one

  • Thanks so much for this clip. I totally agree about Phil being one of the world's best guitarist. I once read an interview with Hendrix. Hendrix was asked, "what's it like to be the best guitarist in the world?" Henrix replied, "I'm not the best guitarist in the world. You wanto to hear the best guitarist in the world? Listen to Phil Keaggy". Thanks again mate!

  • phil keaggy is one of the greatest musicians of our time. He's much more than just a phenomenal guitar player. He's a musician who plays guitar rather than a guitar player who plays music.

  • I used to tour with a country rock band(christian) and opened for Keaggy. He came on stage while we were playing our set at U of M, picked up a guitar and just started playing along. It was magical. the music went to another level. Phil is gifted.

  • For an excellent examination of our humanity and music see the documentary study "Baka - The People of the Rainforest".

  • For an excellent examination of our humanity and music see the documentary study "Baka - The People of the Rainforest".

  • wow ovationelltet...10 super-christian points for you...i was thinking about posting a bunch of christian cliches, that we as christians probably dont understand or misuse, for fun...but looks like u already got that one covered...probing question at the end too, i like how u offered no resolution or reason to believe in the God of Abraham Isaac and Jacob, but it sounded good fo sho...keep it up!!

  • Non-Christians, you cant win in a religious dispute, look at the times we are living in, and face the facts, phil keaggy is a christian and since you dont support christians, why listen to his music?

  • Why does it matter? A lot of his songs don't even have words... Plus if he wasn't christian he wouldn't have any motivation or inspiration for his music (because a lot of it is centered around God.)

  • it doesnt, im not real big on christian bands the more they talk about geebus the less i like to hear it but damn this guys good and if jb hadn't said he was christian based I prolly would've never thought. so whatever makes him play pretty sounds is fine by me.

  • I am 54 years old and grew up thru the 60's and 70's music scene as I am a guitarist as well. I became a Christian in 1977 and can tell you that Christ radically changed my life. Music was a problem ..until I discovered a secret unknown to most ...The Christian muscians all over the world are heads and shoulders better than musicians that are household names..the spark and gift of music was God's idea and He is very creative with His own...one small benefit of knowing Jesus personally.

  • Just because a musician is Christian doesn't make them better than anyone. I am a Christian musician (but I am not a fan of "Christian" music), and I still have to work just as hard to be a good musician. God doesn't favor anybody, and neither should you. We're all sinners, and the fact that we believe that Jesus shed his blood for our sins doesn't make us any better. We are just redeemed.

  • Right on brother !!!

  • I don't believe that a Christian musician or a musician that's a Christian is the same as a non believer musician. I don't believe it's like you come to Christ and all of a sudden become a better musician. You have to do a lot of hard work, practice, and perseverance to get real good. But a Christian has greater/deeper revelation of God, creation, and purpose in life/meaning to live than a non believer. Everyone can sing creation's song but only the redeemed can sing redemption's song.

  • but i have a question, christians when they write music? is the topics they talk about or express non different then those of a secular artist? there are only so many songs that you can write about redemption.

  • One might have said the same thing in 1940 about love songs! There is as much lyrical potential within the theme of redemption as there is in the secular theme of love.

  • I think that I should make clear that every Christian has great revelation. It's those who passionately pursue God, His presence, and who He is that have greater and deeper revelation. Those types of Christians who are musicians are the ones whose music comes from a deeper place, and Keaggy is one of them. There's still the skill factor that no one is excused from. But what our music is birthed from, that's what separates us from them.

  • That deep place you talk about can be reached by followers of every religion, and "nonbelievers" alike, because its that deeper truth that man-made religion is based on, but falls short of hitting the point. Religion, lost of its original pureness, contains too much arrogance like that of your statement.

  • I that sk8er4Jah, perhaps meant that when you become a Christian. Your great revelation is that you no longer are a lone. You have someone that cares for you and loves you deeply, i think that it was wrong for him to say that "Skill factor that no one is excused from." Because yes, people do have great talent that are not christians. But the happiness you feel when you are a christian..it is incomparable. And sk8er4Jah dont say "them" we are all people...

  • /He is very creative with His own...one small benefit of knowing Jesus personally./]

Are you doing reviews for a club or cult here? What happened to our common humanity? Does it go off the radar if one is not in the 'right' club/cult?

Seriously like to know what you mean.

  • Some worship a god of pleasue, others a god of power, many worship a god of money. Phil worships the God of Abraham Isaac & and Jacob. Everyone serves a god... Which god will you serve?

  • who cares

  • ahahah i lol'd and being christian does not instantly give you +100 to music skill. their may be a few who are more driven because of it but no its not a racial bonus for being christian. thanks for the life story horizons i care how old you are.

  • i never said it gives you a bonus. i said who cares if he's christian or not. i wasnt even commenting to you. what an idiot

  • wasn't talking to you i mentioned horizons by name thanks for joining the comvo smarty.

  • you're an idiot. thats why i got a message in my inbox. replied to the wrong person. and i probably couldnt understand who you were replying to, because you can't even type understandable english. you need to get educated

  • I own the DVD this is from! Phil is definitely an acoustic wizard. I highly recommend his "Master and the Musician" album.

  • what dvd is it from

  • I was just a grammar school kid when Master and the musician was released. After years of rock n roll I was deeply moved by this music. For me it began a never ending quest that streches from Bach to Miles Davis but it all started with Phil Keaggy. Before the Christain rock superstars of today there were musicans serving there master. Phill keaggy, second chapter of acts and the late great Keith Green & Larry Norman were all pioneers led by the very Spirit of God.

  • you remember the ressurection band? they were awesome.

  • I was a big fan of ressurection Band.Glen Kiezer has put out some great praise & worship albums over the years. There are some great Ressurection Band clips here on you tube. Chech them out

  • i just saw online where keaggy was playing a private event in my city of houston in december but no details...drats! any ideas?

  • Unbelievable!! My dad used to hand out with him years ago in a coffee shop before I was born. And now that I better understand music, I wish i had known him too.

  • ha..... ha..... HAHAHA..... no

  • wow, you're a fucking cunt.

  • Beautiful

  • Very Renaissance, it is a rare man who can draw influence from such a huge number of sources... simply amazing.

  • A---MAZING!!! Sweet instrumental.
