I want to take back what I said at Polo, Oh Ronnie, I am such a fool...Hmmm, the great Indian Sex trick once again...No wonder hippies flocked to India in the 60s and 70s...
The ruins look more like Angkor Wat than India. Is that in the novel? David Lean being very unsubtle, beating the audience over the head with a hammer. We get it, we get it.
I'm pretty sure the ruined temple in the scene is a made-up set, but the erotic sculptures are modeled after the (in)famous Khajuraho Temples. Built between 950 and 1150 a.d., there are no contemporaneous writings explaining their significance so the debate as to their deeper meaning will go on forever. A lot more is depicted in the extensive carvings than just boffing. However the gringo touristas are not interested in the more mundane stuff.

Incredible scene... Lean was a poet who explores sexuality and forbidden contents with a beautiful style.
