For those of you who do not know why being called big brother is a big deal in this scene. This is because in Japan being called big brother can be used in a sexual way and is often seen that way. Don't believe me? Look at how many Hentai use the idea of incest relationships. Of course most of the time it isnt between two blood related brother and sisters. The people who dubbed this tried to make it fit the best they could because most people don't know the cultural things like this in japan.

The Scene is kinda awkward in English the "Oni-chan" is what made this scene, and unless you watch anime or you are Japanese, you don't get anything out of it at all cause Sister Complexes are mentioned as often in the U.S.

@AtICSt Scenes like this lose their appeal and a majority of their comedy in english, just like a majority of FLCL did, and to me personally I don't hate dubs, some I enjoy more than the subs but I do hate when the cast is bad, I mean if the english cast could have put the same emotion into all the scenes as the Japanese cast did the series would only lose a few jokes that have to do with Japanese Culture, and in a series like this that doesn't matter. That is just my opinion though.

well Onii-chan has more meaning behind it. I don't think this caught the echii meaning though. and Tomoya didn't really whine like in the subbed version. I thought that made it even funnier when he was caught by the girls.

I wonder if the voice actors watch the original version first. if not, they should so that so many things aren't as lost in effectiveness.

@UKiro87 They might watch some of it, most do specifically anime voice acting when they could really do any American cartoon, or what's left of them I guess. What exactlly would be lost, do you mean? Things that just can't get translated, because there is no equivalent, gets changed. Most claim it as "reversioned" instead of just dubbed. It's not like we are bad for doing it, I just watched "24" dubbed in Japanese the other day, I'm sure they have to do the same thing.

@RavenTwoFive That's sorta what I mean. Like how they do in kung-fu hustle. they didn't change the language, they just put subtitles. It keeps the full effect of actions taken be the characters. That and the alien (by american standards) concepts just made the movie funnier too. I mean how could you not smile or laugh at the chase scene where their legs became like sonic the hedgehog's? It's stupid but in a funny way. Things like that shouldn't have to be changed since it's so effective. IiABDF!

This something that I prefer in the jap dub, but it is understandable. I just hit episode 16 (you know what that is) and they did step up the dub on the emotional parts. I cognate the dub because even though the first seasons dub was fair I was worried that it wouldn't be so good in the second season where the heavy stuff comes

@Twistersgirl1 In the Japanese dub, Mei is significantly cuter in the way she spoke to him. Also, the older brother is referred to as "Onii-chan," which has a really sweet and innocent sound to it with a Japanese accent. So in the English translation this scene lost a lot of its humor.

Please say this isn't official. I saw the subbed version first, this scene is a total and complete failure in comparison. It is kinda hard to understand plot wise, for example why he is HHHHNNNNNGGGGG'ing. Meaning was completely lost in translation and or dub.

@Tju1991 actually, if you look on the article for clannad after story on animenewsnetwork, the actress who played sanae in the first season, Kara Greenberg, is still the voice for sanae in after story. but i can see why you'd think they got a new actress, she does sound a lil bit different but its still the same person.
