  • Where can I get thick wiring from?

  • @Mallwiil12 try a craft store. they will be more than willing to help you.

  • @Mallwiil12

Hey, a wire hanger worked best for us. We bought wire but it was too flimsy, so we straightened a wire hanger and smoothed it out really well and it worked great. This was fun, thanks for the instructions our hat turned out great!!!

  • Did you use normal acrylic paint to dye the coat and pants???

  • ...That was fucking amazing. I SO wanna do a female mad hatter for halloween. I don't think I have a hot glue gun though D:

  • ok for the sizre card if you take lemon juice to it lightly with a qtip and the put it in the toaster oven at low temp wile watching it it will brow the paper better than teaing it and then you should burn the edges

  • @AngieGandalf6

I don't know if you mean like what they said with top (place the cylinder on TOP of the circle)

Or what the TOP is made out of (posterboard)

    Hope I helped :)

  • Awesome! I going to make a similar top hat like that, but not Mad Hatter's hat but which another character have. I didn't know how to make that hat, but since it's similar to the Mad Hatter's hat I can use this video as a guide, so thank you for doing this video!! :D

  • Just finished making my own hat. It still needs to be spraypainted and the scarf and some hatpins, but it definitely looks like a hat now. I'm very proud of myself and you fuys were so much help : )

  • Dear Alice why is a raven like a writing desk? Dysitfturbgbhfihthcugjbtbturutjthh Alice Cooper at a bat I ate cheeze

  • Stupid

  • what is the material that you used in the hat

  • SO MAKING A HATE NOW! :DDD

  • 37 people were late for tea! oh, and could you please tell me, why is a raven like a writing desk?

  • Can anyone please tell me how to put the fabric on the hat??? it can get it around the top but i can't do it properly so it looks smooth when you have to stretch it into the hat :'( someone please help

  • Omg it's Erik Beck!!!

  • How much fabric should I need?

  • This is great! You guys are so inspiring! I'm going to try this to this year's Ropecon (the biggest roleplaying event in Finland) : D

  • is it just me, or does the march hare look like eric beck?

  • @DondeBano It IS Eric! ThreadBanger and IndyMogul used to team up for stuff all the time because their headquarters were in the same office.

  • Yeah stretch the hat tot

  • good mad hatter. bad alice cooper. hair was all wrong and he doesnt actually play guitar lol

  • Amazing! I love how simple the individual steps are, so if I do just a few of them, it shouldn't be too difficult! Since I can't make the whole outfit, I was thinking of being some kind of a "ironic hipster hatter", with mostly black and white costume and a pair of hipstery glasses :-D

I also thought about making the hat a bit smaller, and perhaps attaching it to a headband or something. Hmm! Thanks for the inspiration you guys! : D

  • This has been very helpful. I used this last year to make a top hat, and now, I'm in the process of making a mad hatter one. I couldn't do it without you. I do have one question though. What kind of wire did you use?

  • what are the wig materials

  • this is awesome! but looks difficult too ;o

  • SO AWESOME! A friend is having a MAD HATTER party soon and i been looking for a tutorial on making the hat! THANKS SO MUCH! you make it look so easy! others leave out important parts like how the brim attaches to the hat! To those inquiring on the fabric, it can be any material that stretches thats why there are no pleats!! All this really takes is a lil imagination and patience!! I kant wait! Gonna use this model to make the white rabbit hat! MATERIAL DOESNT HAVE TO MATCH! The hatter is MAD!

  • Comment removed

  • how'd you wrap the fabric around the structure without the fabric having pleats in the part of the smaller circle? does it depend on the type of fabric? if so, what fabric did you use here, cotton? thank you verymuch.

  • After watching this I've decided something, I'm buying a costume for Halloween.

  • Its actually not a size card, it's a price tag, as even the hat he was wearing was intended for sale.

  • this can also be a willy wonka hat if you make some minor adjustments.

  • hi! I like to thank TreadBanger for this tutorial because I made a very special costume.

I was in Venice Carnival and I was a very successfull! how can I send photo of me?

    thank you very much.

  • This is so cool I love It

  • I've been working 3 days for this costume, and it's NO WAY intermediate. But in the end I've had my result, a great result! Simply my best costume ever. And I gotta thank Threadbanger and this tutorial ;). Soon I'll post here the pictures!!

  • I'd like to watch a "death!" difficult costume...

  • @demiselenaalways i know the answer is reaaaally late... but... does it matters??? its a mad hatter! it doesn't have to be perfect :D

  • We are doing a stop motion animation film called Tim. The movie is a stop motion animation film that is dedicated to Tim Burton and has Sir Christopher Lee as the narrator. Search the directors name Brian Joseph Ochab to find the video.

  • It took more than 4 hours for the hat, because i wanted it perfect ! But it really helped me out !!! Thanks for the great video !!!

  • When has Alice Cooper ever been "Glam"? His shows were kinda Goth-y... Lotta blood...

  • lol paper bunny teeth <3

  • Approximately how many yards of fabric do I need to make the hat?

  • Great tutorial, but I think it's only the hat that takes 4 hours. All that dye work and paint work is super time consuming because you have to let everything dry.

  • @tigerb1976

the pants are the most time consuming part. it took me longer to tape and paint them than to do my entire hat. i had to do two coats of paint on the pants to get the purple to show up on top of the green. i worked on this project in small shifts for two months and was the HIT of halloween this year. if you decide to do this the payoff of compliments you will get is well worth the work!

  • how do you get the wire rim the way you had it? when you cut the large circle for the brim, would you say make it more an oval than a circle to achieve the turned up sides?

  • @yerkees9891 You could do that or just pull the fabric REALLY tight...

  • @yerkees9891

i made this for halloween this year. do the brim wire in a circle as shown then shape it as you pull it taut. they also dont tell you how tough it is to get the curve shape down the hat side as your pulling it taut, the key is cut some slits near the brim and pull them together. have extra material to work with if you need to start over. i had to do trial and error. i was extremely happy with my finished product and got TONS of compliments, i think mine looks better than theirs!

  • how do you get the wire rim the way you had it?

  • today i started off with the hat, but the fabric won't come smoothly when I'm done stretching etc.

what can i do to make it even?

respectively did you measure the fabric to a certain size so that it fits better???

    please help, i'm desperate D:

  • I used this for a mini lolita top hat headband, thank you threadbanger :)

  • I love the hat and scarf

  • the hat is amazing!

  • this is how it's done new threadbanger.

  • this must took a lot of hours...... very good job......

  • i say madhatters hat in disneyland for 230 dollars

  • the hat is awsome but couldnt you of got a floral print fabric instead of dyeing a white scarf?

  • what kind of wire did you use for the rim?

  • it's a price card, not a size card. it means ten shillings and six pense.

  • meh.. you ruined the hat the moment you had the whute stuff, let alone the spray paint... still good tutorial!

  • ja ja...jaaaaaa jajajajaja haaaaa por dios el intro fue la onda...muy bueno.

  • This helped me a lot ! thanks guys ! you Rock! /m\

  • I love it!!! I made it for my 5 year old girl... She won the school contest... !!!

  • @MzU2Carmen cool!!!!

  • @MzU2Carmen I did the same for my little 3rd grader and a BOY stuck lunch money in her shirt!

  • @MzU2Carmen me 2! only i made it for a boy!

  • I'm becoming mad trying to do the mad hatter costume! It's so difficult!

  • @helker89 if i did it you can do it!

  • Thank you so much for this video...it helped me so much...

  • funny

  • any suggestions on how to make a hat brim if I don't have access to a sewing machine?

  • @kakeyk85 use the hot glue. its what i did! you have have to stretch it, lay the glue down and hold it while it dryes.

  • @kakeyk85 I sewed it by hand and it came out really welll (and i sew like crap) it wasn't too hard

  • @kakeyk85

just pin it like they did and hand sew around thebrim wire....thats what i had to do and it looks fabulous! it will take some time but its so worth it when you have the finished product!

  • this is an amazing idea, and thanks for the hard work putting it together, so informative, and clever!!

  • Comment removed

  • ummmmm does this really take 4 hours??? cuz...theres one week until halloween

    *gulps*

  • @hailandclouds only if you're really good at this stuff. I did it and it's my first attempt at something like this and the hat alone (building it) took 4 hours. That doesn't even include painting it ect. It's a great tutorial though. And if you had all the materials, and knew how to sew, you could do it in a day.

  • was the first bit necessary

it made me a little bit sick

  • thx i needed this for halloween

  • I'm totally going to make this outfit and have my boyfriend wear it, as we are going together as Alice and the Mad Hatter for Halloween.

Question: Does the spray paint and dye make the clothes stiff or stain your skin while wearing at all? Also, what kinds of dyes/paints did you use, and can the clothing be washed after wear without color bleeding?

  • If you look closely, it appears the fabric is cut on the bias which would give the fabric the ability to stretch enough to glue to the top while retaining it's ability to ease rather than tuck at the base. Try cutting your fabric on the bias and see if it helps with less puckering.

  • How the hell did you make the fabric not pucker when you glued it into the bottom fo the hat?????

  • @chocolatefountainpro I actually used a lampshade recovering tutorial to get the fabric to lay right on the hat because even when I cut some fabrics on the bias, they still would not give me enough stretch to glue down without puckering. Just click on my name to go to my channel and check out my featured video Making the Mad Hatter's Top Hat for more info since I can't post links in the comments.

  • this is fantastic!!! its soo fricken cool! but i highly doubt it takes four hours.. more like 4 weeks.

  • wii

  • Thank you SO much for this!! You have brought me out of my depression about my costume... I experienced a major fail in the making of my costume and was about to spend a lot of money to fabricate my own hat... this will save so much time and money! Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • great costume tutorial over all i'd give it 9 out of 10 :D 1 point of because you dont tell is where we can get any of the supplies. : / anyone have any suggestions?

  • @Dmaster19996 material found at a fabric store or hobby lobby or some walmarts, hot glue guns anywhere, and stong gauge metal-also probally hobby lobby or the like, I got mine from Menards a home improvement store for real cheap and alot of it (rebar tie)-I have used this in the past to make butterfly wings also. Poster board at hobby lobby, I think used a cake round cardboard as I happen to of had some-since I make cakes. I am impressed with my results, and almost done

  • Did you cut the fabric in an angle to make smooth?

  • @cristitaly I'd love to know this trick too, as I end up just with folded over seems just a few and dont feel as though it takes away from my hat
