Most of the formations he used were formed in layers. If you look immediately next to the structure there is a hole/quarry. By digging out a place to work from he merely drove wedges (see photos) horizontally and broke out the formations along the natural striations.

The anti-gravity stories come from some young boys who spied on Ed at night. Ed used a tri-pod and pulley system. The boys could not see the ropes and such at night, especially since the loom of the light colored coral was bright. It is a misunderstanding by children that keeps full grown men mystified.
