  • Idiots...tell it's slow to Wild Bill Hickok. He can kick your ass with Colts fastern than you moron can shoot modern automatic.

  • My very first pistol was a cap and ball Colt

Shoot as fast as lightnin' but it loads a mite slow

Loads a mite slow and i soon found out

It can get you into trouble but it can't get you out

  • @Domebuddy Devils Right Hand, Steve Earle (Copperhead Road)

  • Idiotic comments... this is what they had back then. Nobody is saying this is a nice home defense gun, or modern warfare gun. Your revolver was your last option in battle, reserved for close combat once the enemy breached the line. Only the horse back soldiers used the revolver as their primary weapon..they would flank, ride in and fire all their cylinders...ride back out and reload, and they carried multiple cylinders already loaded..so reloading the gun was fairly quick.

  • You want sound, go play with your ipod pistol. And remember to load your ipod pistol with charger caliber, ok. Read your ipod manual for safety tips on reloading. No FFL dealer, no transfered fee when you buy blackpowder revolvers.

  • great video, one hell of a gun, gotta love the technology back then old sam was a genius.

  • what size caps do you use

  • That would be one ass to reload in a middle of gunfight.

  • THESE COMPANIES HAVE ALREADY DELETED 1/10 OF YOUTUBE. DOES SONY OWN PSYCHOPATHIC RECORDS? DO THEY REALLY HAVE SOME MATERIAL ON UFO DISCLOSURE VIDEOS? YOU CAN'T WATCH VIDEOS ABOUT GUNS IN THIS FADING WORLD AND THE MUSIC CLAIM IS JUST AN EXCUSE. YOUTUBE IS UNDER ATTACK.

  • I wonder if you give verbal safety tips in your video... and wmg removes the audio...and god forbid some noobie watched your video and could not hear tips and gets hurt can they sue you or wmg?

  • *Whew!* Sure glad you included those safety tips on loading and handling the weapon in the audio track.

    ...f'ing WMG bastards.

  • don't miss

  • They took it away- BAD record companies!

  • were is the music man

  • Well... Are you gonna pull them pistols or whistle Dixie?

    Great Video,,hats off!

  • more stupid responses from idiots who dont appreciate the technology as it was back then....TOO SLOW!!...yeah no shit...what a dumbass comment.

  • Ive got an 1858 Revolver thats a speedloading cylinder. VERY fun to shoot and Very fun to reload.

  • thanks man for the example im a 3D artist doing one of these in 3D so the loading process as you can imagine shows me exactly how the classic 1851 works.

  • where can i get a stand like this?

  • hold the battle dont shoot im reloading lol

  • Wow people had allot of spare time back in the day. Cool vid though ;]

  • Post again this video but without the song, even if its only the end when you shoot cause the sound was amazing :)

  • Pretty much a waste of time. Show loading two and firing same would have gotten the point across.

  • do they still make these kinds of guns?

  • can i buy one at 19 i dont thinks its regulated like other handguns

  • lovin this video!! leave me a comment

im on cam and bored ly

  • Cylinder recoils from firing my brass framed Replica Arms.44 Navy 1851 eventually caused excessive to and fro cylinder sloppiness. It eventually caused all the cylinders to chain fire, barking the pine tree support. Regardless of crisco usage, chain fires can happen with brass framed 44's. The pistol earned its place as a wall hanger. Forgo shims. Just hang it up. For prolonged shooting of 44's get a steel framed one or a 36 which is historically accurate.

  • ...and your attacker is dead later that week.

  • how much recoil do these things have?

  • wow that reload is ridiculous, in the middle of a battle when they were being shot at did they bring a little fold out table once they ran out of ammo and take about 10 minutes to reload 6 shots, lol

  • hahaha ya i can can c it now...Oh fuck im out get the lucky reload table!!!

  • in a battle your pistol was a last resort and when they did load it they werent as concervative on powder and just threw some and put the ball in and rammed it in. It can be done quite fast after a while. Still if youyr in a battle and you have to use your pistol and then your out of ammo. If its close quaters say your prayers and start to use the butt of your pistol.

  • Nice video, However the loading is a bit slow but it's almost impossible to be faster in those conditions. I am using a walker powder flask with adjustable charge so it's a bit faster and for the caps, I use a line caper. The only thing I don't understand is that some are using bore butter after the ball and some are using wad like you. What's the best? The both, wad + butter?

  • Any idea where I can order a pre-made wood reloading stand like that?

  • Cheer for the attempt at aiming through the camcorder eye ! Very extremely !

  • I really enjoyed it ... thanks

  • Multiple cylinders were used like magazines most of the time when reloading. Sometimes disintigrating paper cartridges were used so you just slip the paper pack into it and put the ball on top. Still takes long because you still need to put percussion caps behind each cylinder.

  • what is the name of the tool in the end the one that is made from trees lol

  • A lot of the power comes from the type of powder. You should never use smokeless powder in these types of guns because of the increased pressures it creates.

  • a coversion kit defeats the purpose of shooting this type of pistol. if one wanted to reload quickly there are over a hundred years worth of cartridge ammo revolvers to buy rather than bastardizing a fine weapon into something it is not. and if you honestly had problem with reloading you could go and get a semi-auto and preload

  • It's a nice video. Good work.

  • does 23 grains give you better performance than other measurements you've used?

  • nope, it's civil war.

by the way, you spelled sponsor wrong.

  • Is there any rifling in the barrel of that revolver or is it smooth-bore like a shotgun?

  • It's rifled.

  • BEAUTIFUL!!!

  • You mean in real fights they would take that much time to load a gun ?

  • Of course not.

Once out of ammo, a sensible soldier would go for his knife.

  • sword if its in the hands of an officer

  • Many soldiers also carried up to six revolvers so they always had one that worked/had ammo

And, like he said in the video, you can change the cylinders much faster. Just push out a bolt in the front and you can reload in seconds.

  • its also alot faster when just using a powder flask that drops a measured charge the ball and caps, no wads or grease. it only takes a minute or two to load and ive fired hundreds of rounds that way and never had a chainfire

  • Now you know why the bayonet was invented.

In the "Battle of a Hundred Slain", part of "Red Cloud's War", when the US Cavalry spent their shots, they tried to retreat. Except one: the bugler stood his ground and fought with his bugle itself! The Lakota triumphed, and while the they desecrated the corpses of the Cavalry for being cowards, they gave Adolph Metzler the respect of a great warrior. They aligned his body, placed his bugle on his chest, and draped him with a buffalo hide.

  • at 03:05...is that flint you put in there??:P

  • those are percussion caps

  • you need to get a conversion cylinder

you can order them online without paper ork that way you can shoot .45s instead of blackpowder and lead balls

  • nice :)

  • no shape no grease just put in a ball and some powder and fire the fucking thing i do....

  • is that not a 36 cal ??? navy 1851

  • looks like the .44 cal model

  • your right i think.

  • you aim like shit!

  • and you sing like shit !!!

  • ya i never see people hold there hand to shoot

  • Excellent.

  • Thanks for taking the time to video this. Friend of mine had this same pistiol. Forgot to put that locking pin to hold the barrel on and the bullets were skipping from the cylinder through the air then back into the barrel and out the front of the barrel.

  • war will be over, time to reload it haha

    great gun

  • thats why its great to have semi-automatic guns by WW2 so they dont have to reload guns this SLOW!

  • Yeah, because there were no semi-automatics before WW2, were there?

Semi-auto pistol design started in the 1890's with weapons like the Borchardt C-93.

Even the US Army issue Colt came before WW2; hence the designation M1911.

  • Well is WW2 they used the 1911.

  • I think he meant to say WWI.

  • Around 1858~1860 STARR firearms designed and maufactured the first double-action percussion revolvers. Some were used during the civil war, but not in great numbers. You can also get replicas of those, but they are a little harder to find.

  • I never could fought that revolver could be reloaded so long until i watched that movie, thanks!

  • The combustible cartridges in use by the late 1850's made revolver loading MUCH faster than what is shown here. Also, the Confederate cavalry carried 2 to 4 revolvers per rider. The fastest reload is a 2nd gun, regardless of whether you are using an auto-pistol or a percussion revolver!

  • Im thinking about getting one of these badboys, but I dont know whether I want one with a brass frame or a steel frame. I would just use it for target practice. What would you guys recommend?

  • Get the steel frame, as it is authentic. Only a few Confederate-manufactured revolvers had brass frames due to lack of steel. I'd recommend Uberti replica revolvers. The Remington-style has less culture-shock for the modern user. My Uberti Remington Army is extremely accurate, reliable and will fire 200 grain conicals at 45 ACP +P velocities using a 25 grain charge of Hodgdon 777 FFFg. A full charge is 35 grains, which generates impressive power, but fouls the gun much faster!

  • brass frame is just cheaper ;) that's why I got it anyways. it's kinda funny actually. how you can get a 44 caliber revolver online, for less than 200 dollars, with no paperwork, no background check, permits or questions asked, and they deliver it right to your door. gun laws make me laugh.

  • yeah but look how long it takes to reload. it would be hard to do alot of damage with that, but it is funny, i am just glad we can have guns, its a great hobby

  • Guns like those have claimed more lives than Glocks, SiGs, or possibly even the venerable 1911.

  • yeah a 150 years ago maybe.

  • And? Human life is as easy to end now as it was then.

  • jesus, yes I know this gun can kill just as easy but you get six shoots. thats probably why you can buy them easier is the point i am trying to make. its not like magazines wich you can reload in 1 second.

  • Rotfl, I'm just hassling you. =x

  • lol, ok haha. started to piss me off a little. peace

  • Take a lesson from outlaw josey. Two walker1847s on your pistol belt, two navy colt belly guns, and two pocket models in soulder strapped holsters. Thats 36 shots right there. Even if you shoot like a french man, at the least you should get 12 hits.

  • guess thats true

  • What size caps are you using? I have #11, but I find that I have to crimp them a little to get them to stay in place. I am thinking about trying some #10 but don't know if the fit will be too snug for the 1851.

  • Hmmmmm dont you need grease,, the lesd seems to have a little trouble getting in the cylinder,,,AND WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT, THERE IS FLYING FROM THE CYLINDER AT 5:50 RIGHT OVER THE CAM!!!????

  • Yeah you DO NEED GREESE for cap & ball revolvers & I don't know what it was that you seen flying out over the cam at 5:50 so I don't know why he's not using greese!!! But the thing that flew out was probebly the RING OF LEAD FROM WHEN HE PUSHED THE LEAD BALL INTO THE CYLINDER BECAUSE IF THERE IS A RING OF LEAD THAT COMES OFF OF THE BALL WHEN YOU PUSH IT INTO THE CYLINDER THAT IS A GOOD THING!

  • the old percussion caps falling off of the fire nipples

  • Yeah I just seen that!

  • Do you need wads, or is that just an option.

  • Um.. did the solders during the Civil War have Crisco or grease? No. The only thing that does is make a mess. Use wads less mess an does the same thing. A person tried to get a ball and cap to chain fire and it never did.

  • i think he used too much powder or the ball wasnt round

  • good video whats the ftlbs from one of these weapons and how high is the psi pressure with the lead ball

  • such a pretty weapon

  • i have heard people say you need to use grease in front of the projectile regardless if you use a felt pad. is this true?

  • I believe the use of grease prevents the spark from jumping cylinders (and thus preventing a cook off).

  • No. Greese is used to prevent chain fire (which is what the wad is for) and to soften the fouling for easier clean-up.

  • good job they didnt use these with the normall soldiers! the war would of benn 80 years with how slow tht gun loads! :P

  • i wanna ask, are these kind of guns more powerful then guns that use magazines?

  • No.

  • Well, i have to disagree. A gun's power is not in its muzzle velocity.

  • Conventional weapons have more power, because of all the choices of ammo we have, and I beleive the power to be in velocity and bullet size.

  • And shape.

  • A lot of the power comes from the type of powder. You should never use smokeless powder in these types of guns because of the increased pressures it creates.

  • Where would you say?

  • Power = Mass x Acceleration.

  • Great video!

...and yes, the song is "Gun Love" by ZZ Top.

  • 良いな。

  • thewhole thing is im loading that fucking thing

  • omg that takes 2 long 2 load lol

  • Thanks for loading info and great video, shooting a cylinder or two at NIGHT would increase the WOW factor!

    ...Part 2 maybe?

  • boom click click

  • Im Buying a 1851 Confederate Navy From Cabela's Next Month.

  • I know that is ZZ Top but I can't remember the name of the song...if that's any help.

  • Great video! Boy he's brave thumb setting his perc caps and the way he holds that pistol. You should never hold a BP pistol that way if thumbsetting the perc caps.

  • Whats so bad about it, I have loaded my 1851 colt navy dozens of times in that same manner.

  • what is the name of this song???

  • I own two old CSA Navy Colts in .36 cal

They are in great shape , but I am scared to shoot em!

One has got 5 notches in the butt . I wonder.....

anyway ,they go with my CSA uniforms right nice.

    I'll shoot my Uberti's instead

  • This is a great Five Star Video!!

  • Now THAT'S how you show off a gun. I loved the behind-the-sites camera angle and the slo-mo from the side. Great, great work. Did you really get such a great spread? I thought your hand was bouncing all over the place when you were shooting, but damn if the spread wasn't as good as I can do with a modern handgun. Can't wait 'til my Walker Colt shows up in the mail.

  • I've never seen one loaded before. I didn't even realize it would take that long. It's still quite amazing that in just about 50 years they had swing out cylinders. I'd like a Le Mat or a Colt Army for fun at the range, but if I was doing some serious shooting, I'd go with nothing older than a Single Action Army.

  • Hey great video. I hope to get a cap and ball BP revolver soon at some point. This one has a nice look to it.

Just curious what it is that you are putting in after the powder and before the ball. Is it a wadding pad? What's its purpose? Other BP pistols i've seen didnt use them so I was curious.

    Thanks

    Kevin

  • I think they're called Wonder Wads. Dixie Gun Works sells them. Biggest problem with bp pistols is a chain fire- all cylinders going off at once. That helps prevent that. I used creme of wheat (inert) on top of the powder, then the ball, then Crisco over the cylinder. A lot messier, I'll admit. Got to watch for cap jams, too.

  • i jus use traditions wonder lube 1000 ofer the top of the cylinder. i saw one guy using vasiline of his. ever try loading without the loading stand?

  • nice shootin tex.

  • haha.. did ur hands hurt?

  • Nice 1851 colt navy! This is exactly the video I was searching for. I want one. Took a while to reload, but what can you expect from a cap and ball. Really cool, I liked the slow motion part at the end, and the smoke! It was awesome.

  • In the vid, did u have a spare cylinder of which u didn`t show reload of, or did u reloaded several times? Neat revolver! I want one myself! But since i live in Norway I have to do with the Tanaka Single Action Army .45 Civilian 6mm bb gas revolver.. All best!

  • No, you never have to reload- haven't you watched enough cowboy movies?

  • What song is this

  • I just got an 1858 Remington Army! Im gonna go shoot it for the first time tomorrow! I cant wait, its gonna be awsome.

  • i want one!!! if only they had an airsoft version for me to mess with untill i can afford to pick up a real steel one. i have a hard time finding one cheap. i love half frame, brass frame revolvers

  • Excellent, I bought 4 of the Uberti 1873 revolvers in 4 3/4 barrel length also a Pietta 1860 Sheriffs model - I love these simple pistols. So easy to maintain and shoot. Thanks for the video.

    Johnny

  • Very interesting video, how about the accuracy on those navy revolvers? This vid seriously made me thinking about getting one myself. I mean pouring gunpowder straight into the camber and then loading the bullets like that and placing primers on the outside of the cylinder, thats half the fun of shooting those guns.

By the way about packing the powder with that lever.. Is that safe? Looks kind of risky, or does the gases go out through were the primer are later placed?

  • The BP pistols were actually designed to be aimed at 50-75 yards away. Mine shoots high and to the left if the wedge isn't seated real tight.

There are plenty of websites about shooting BP they do alot better than I can in this short space.

  • This is the kind of shooting that takes patience :D

  • nice video seems like alot of work tho.

  • man! this is exactly what I needed to see!

Now I can feel confident to load and shoot

my cap & ball pistols .

  • That's a nice Colt Navy you got there!

  • Very cool. I love cap 'n' ball shooting. Nothing like it!
