Did this really cost $20million? I could understand the vehicle costing a lot, but some of the effects are really unconving to say the least. This was 20th Century Foxes big budget adenture/SF film that year. They also financed a lower budget movie for $9 million (ended up costing $12m) which none of the Fox board had any confidence in....Star Wars. Naturally Goldsmith scored D.A., while Williams scored the mega blockbuster. Then Williams completed Superman, as Jerry finished The Swarm!
I've tried to find this movie. I don't really want to buy it though. It was the first movie I ever walked out on and I'd like to give it another chance. I guess I was 10 or 12.

Oh man, I remember talking my sitter into taking me to this. I've been embarrassed ever since. Still, a decent enough time waster.

Any news on this being released on DVD?
A couple of outrageously over-priced VHS tapes available on the internet, and VOD rental from Amazon is all that is out there.
Both of which are in the virtually unwatchable "pan and scan" format. This is a movie that needs to be seen in the original widescreen.

The book was better.
The movie was ok,
but the book ran deeper and had an entirely different story line.
It only had 3 things in common:
1.the machine
2.post-nuclear desolation
3.Hell Tanner, who was a convict not a soldier. It explained how he got his name.

This and the 'Mad Max' films inspired me to write my sci-fi series, 'Apocrypha'

This was cool movie! I haven't seen this movie
on tv in years. Its sad that the tv networks or
or even the sci-fi channel does not movies like
this one.

you should add more clips from this movie like the war itself

It's been a while since I've seen this movie but I'm pretty sure they never showed the war itself. Just the explosion at the beginning.

This movie is terrible, but it spooked me when I was a kid. And the visuals of the sky were freaky. I liked it!
