  • what will i do with out you ???? ^^

  • hi could you complete the square for 3X^2 + X - 2 = 0. I need to complete the square in order to find the inverse of the quadratic. If you can, can you also help me out with the inverse part as well. Thanks.

  • could you do an equation with a higher coefficient? like 5x2 + 2x + 7

  • @patrickJMT how did you factor to get -3/2 ?

  • May God reward you for this

  • HUH. This is hella hard :(

  • I think its really great your doing this for people :)

  • this one is more harder

  • Your tutorials are great.

But in this Video i am slightly confused.

Can you explain me that, how did 3/2 arrive and where 'x' has gone ? at 3:20

  • y = a (x-h) ^ 2 + k

  • what do you do if there is no x twrm like 3x^ - 121 = 0

  • anyone hear the door creak at 1:44 ?be safe PatrickJMT lol

  • @neneluvred the door didnt creak lol it was him erasing

  • Thanks for the awesome video!

  • Can you Explain, Why you put 9/2 instead of 9/4 when subtracting?

  • @TheJigzoe

    1:43 mate

  • What if the question turn out to be 3x^2-x+11=0? I would have x/3 to deal with. Please help!

  • Thanks If it wasnt for this video i repeated 3rd year-lyr's little brother

  • You are a life saver!!!

  • Thanks so much for all of your videos! :)

They've helped me so much with my Pre-Calc class, I'd be lost without these!!

  • I LOVE YOU

  • how would you solve something like x^squared+2x=7?

  • @DescendInFlames you subtract seven to both sides, so you get: x^2+2x-7=0 , and then you do what is instructed in the video :)

  • what if theres no 2x squared, what if its just x squared you don't have to divide by 2 or do you? idk

  • @XxBlindedBySin92xX refer to his first video

  • Its so nice to be able to come to your channel for help, I'm in calc 3 and its hard to ask how to do something like completing the square, but your channel gives me the little refresher I need for stuff like this, thank you :)

  • THANKS MAN. I have a math test in two days and couldn't figure out how to do this. I gonna SUBSCRIBE and LIKE.

  • im in engineering at uni, with a math test in an hour, im completely forgot how to do this.. completing the square is a small step in the LARGE integration questions... you jiust saved my ass. cheers

  • Thanks for the video. It's funny how something so slacker-ish like youtube can actually help me in school!

  • This is a fantastic help, thank you so much for taking the time and effort to do this!

  • How would you know weather to use the completing the square method or the quadratic formula

  • @no1boozaa I guess it depends on the question. They look the same to me. You know how teachers teach two different methods to solve a problem.

  • I am usually very good at math but i never really understood completing the square until i found your 2 videos on it. now i understand perfectly!!! :) thank you so much. probably the best explanation of anything math related I have ever seen. I'll be sure to look through your channel before anyone else for help.

  • What if your x's are 5x^2 - 2x?

  • @xXForgottenFallXx decimals.. :/

  • Thank you so much! You're the best teacher ever

  • Thank you so much. We've started reviewing quadratic equations in Pre-calc, and I remembered none of this from Algebra 2. Now I remember!

  • I forgotten how and came back and I'm back in track . Thanks !

  • I'm glad i found these videos when I started my maths, I have a feeling I will be relying quite heavily on them in the future.

  • THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU and THANK YOU

I find my math teacher very confusing to understand but this is easy to follow and well said THANK YOU

  • Thank you

  • Thanks man. Really clear and concise. I hadn't done this in 20 years and your videos on completing the square and deriving the quadratic equation were just what I needed. Keep the faith and continue to Ignore the trolls and the ignorant ;-)

  • what does the JMT in ur name mean ?

  • I spent an hour and a half trying to work out where i was going wrong... then you came into my life ;) :P

  • Thankyou very much or this vid =)

    Mathematical life saver!

  • thank you for this, the second part is what i was lacking. i wasnt taking out that extra number

  • thax so much :D

  • thax sooo much dis vid help me lods on my test :)

  • anyone notice that he had a black marker with a blue cap?

  • I had a math teacher during the year.... that did not go so well. Anyways, I failed math and am now in summer school. If she could have just explained stuff the way you do I might have passed. Thank you though, you're helping me through summer school.

  • Lols OMG yuh teach it a really different way from my teacher no lie . This is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy easier ! Got a test tomorrow lmao . Wish me luck !

  • 62,000 kids screwed in their maths test tomorrow, thats why they are watching math videos on youtube

  • thank u.. i have a test mrw.. this is really boosting my confidence.. wish me luck >> i hope i dont spew in the exam hall

  • how did u get 3/2 at 3:11?

  • @patrickJMT for the first step, you divided by 2 because its the coefficient in front of x^2 right?

  • @Alex1996Andria yep!

  • I hate rude people complaining when your just trying to help people out!!!!

  • @naheeda13 welcome to the internet.

  • Comment removed

  • @meowooflapflapflap it is called: writing. that is what happens. you sometimes cover up what you write. there is a pause button and a rewind button though. try 'em out.

  • isn't easier to -3 first... just to get it out the way

  • @monalisaa21 it is all the same to me

  • You just saved my life. ;)

  • thanks a lot math teacher guy, this helps a lot :)

  • i cant believe i didn't think of turning to youtube sooner!! at least i did b4 my

"quest" (<-- math teachers these days, seriously)...i am greatful for this marvelous video, never learned soo much in 5 min! THIS IS GENIUS, thanks!

  • what??? omg this is confusing

  • Thank you! Math does not come easily to me at all, but your videos make this stuff easy to understand! So much easier than trying to figure out what my textbook is talking about.

  • i love this video thank you your a genius haha so nervous for my exam tmro but hopefully this helps a lot (:

  • my teacher sucks >.<

  • thankss!!

  • @buzzcadet yep!

  • im failing my subjects cause i cant understand this simple topics and equation but thanks to people like you who makes it simple and not complicated as hell like my teacher that i got a chance to pass, thank you :)

  • @Nenjaw

The textbook is always full of errors

  • Solve it further if you can but yes I would put that as my answer.... AND THANKS FOR THE REFRESHER

  • so in the exam i write that as my answer??

  • Wow thanks i spent so much time trying to figure it out by factorising EVERYTHING instead of the 1st 2 terms. thanks dude i'mma be checking your vids more often ;) wish me luck in my exam tomorow!!! :/

  • this is awsome. really helped me with my maths homework. thanks alot!!!!!!

  • I have a problem Patrick.

@ 1:35 in the video, 3/2 squared gave you 9/4 - which is correct in all ways, yeah - but in my textbook, they only seem to square the top number of the fraction.

Is this a mistake on their behalf or are you doing something wrong?

Thanks in advance for a reply.

Love the videos by the way, a great help.

  • You have very valuable math solution encyclopedia . Thanks :)

  • thanz, im starting to understand this stuff :)

are there any good websites you would recommend to go on to do some practise question?

  • how r u not lefty

  • You suck at explaining it I still don't understand

  • Your videos are so good they put ads on it

  • Thanks for the video. My question is, what if the constant term is negative when you move it to opposite side of = and solve by taking square roots? Do you leave the sign out of root or put it in and end up with a complex number?

  • @johnlocke74 when you send it to the other side, the sign has to change!

  • @Alex1996Andria

Exactly, so what happens if the 3/2 (in this example) is positive on left side rather than negative, we subtract from both sides and are left with a negative on right side. We need to take square root of this negative number. Is this now a complex problem or can we leave negative outside of square root?

  • @johnlocke74 it really depends on the question or equation... sometimes the square root of a negative number is essential but sometimes it isn't. for example, i had to solve an equation that was really only the equation and i had to find the square root of -1, and the answer was undefined, just because it didnt ak for an especific answer... that's just for me... i don't wanna say anything wrong, so i guess you'll just have to look that up. or maybe patrick will answer.

  • This is great! Are you by chance left handed?

  • @patrickJMT Oh... I guess the camera just flips it. Anyway, keep up the great work! You're a lifesaver.

  • @neondreamscollide the camera doesn't flip it, otherwise the numbers would be backwards too.

  • @patrickJMT wait ur not left handed? In the video ur using ur left hand?

  • how did you factor it out on 3:07 ? that's where I'm stuck at

  • I am either too stupid too follow or not very focused right now :(

  • i always look at your videos to touch up my algebra for cacl :)

  • my teacher only thought us this for 2, 43 minute periosd and she gave us homework and i barely understand it

  • The dislikes must be from math teachers with students who'd rather go on youtube than sit through lecture. Thanks Patrick!

  • @niksilveira ha, no problem

  • thanks to you i feel confident i can pass the upcoming test, thank you!

  • Thank you it really helped me

  • what IF B is an ODD number do you still do the divide by 2 and square it?

  • @TheJason999s yes

  • @TheJason999s dude you're really dumb what kind of question is that???

  • i love you! im pretty sure u tought me better than my teacher in minutes! ive ben learnin this stuff for weeks fo real ily!

  • there is a 2 >:O

  • Everyone critisises our generation because of youtube and such but DUUUUDEEE!!! YOu're the sole reason i'm going to pass my exam next week [P O S I T I V E T H O U G H T S]:)

  • @xkuchex old people always complain about the new generations stuff. i will do it one day, and you will too. : ) but i agree, when someone complains about how useless youtube is, i know they are at least 50.

  • There is a new product to Protect children online. (SnipeSlider)

Snipe creates a barrier between “parent” mode and “children” mode.

    It's amazing! Take a look:

    youtube.com/watch?v=48saXiJE9Mg

  • ineed help with this equation (2x +4)to the power of 2 - 12 =52

could yu help me please .. i am meant to find x

  • you are the reason i passed my exams <3

  • Comment removed

  • Thanks, for all you did helped a lot.

  • thanks for your help! i spend hours frusterated with my math homework but i understand it now, all thanks to you :)

  • heh, those were the exact numbers as the problem I was having trouble with. Thanks.

  • thanks for the tutorial I completly forgot how to complete the square when the coefficient wasn't equal to 1 at first was a lil confusing but I got the hang of it :)

  • ok i still dont get it. :( im falling behind in class

  • hi i hate doing this i always get it wrong!

  • thanks man! your videos are really helpful.

i forgot some step and i was really confused. but u cleared it out!

  • thanks for the vid, u saved my ass :)

  • How'd it factor from 2(x2-3x+9/4) into 2(x-3/2)2 ?

  • where did the 1/2 come form?

  • Thank-you so so soooooooooooooo much :-)

  • where did you get the 1/2 from?

  • can u make a quadratic functions using a(x-h)2+k?

cause ive learn a lot from yours.

    You are a great teacher!

  • @jelry09 i have already - do a search of 'vertex form'

  • y1/2 -7y1/4 +12=0 could sum1 please help me solve this

  • @superrimswj let x = y^(1/4) and then you will have a quadratic equation

  • @patrickJMT thanks for your help but i was wondering if you could just tell me what to type so i can get different examples similar to this one

  • @superrimswj well, you can type 'quadratic equation ' and search my videos, i am not sure if i have one like this... i will make one real quick though! just keep an eye on my recent uploads; it will be out there in a bit

  • @patrickJMT okay i subscribed to your channel just in case

  • @superrimswj ok, sorry, my webcam is having issues. i will try to get one posted later today or tomorrow. you may also search 'rational exponents' as well

  • SO CONFUSING THE LAST PART

  • @accuratejanice OK THANKS SO MUCH

  • Thanks, your a lifesaver, easy to understand too.

Only qualm is: Why do you only have options for 1080p and 360p, and nothing in-between? It's probably Youtube's fault anyway.

  • @linx1970 not sure, you would have to ask youtube!

  • how do i make the coefficent = 1 if i have a sum like 2x^2-7x+6=0

You have 2x^2 and -6 .. 2 and 6 are like divisible..what about 2 and 7? ANYONE can answer :)...awesome vids btw..ive learned MORE on youtube that all my maths teachers combined lol

  • @jaafarj you can still divide by 2

  • thanks.

  • Thanks. it's nice to see a vid like this where it doesn't make it seem harder like some other ones... good job.

  • all you've done is the quadratic formula in long form, LOL, what a horrible waste of time.

  • @1too3fore reading your comments are an even more horrible waste of time, imo.

  • @1too3fore stupid asshat he showing the completing the square method look at the title you dumbfuck not all of us isn't required to get the answer using your lazy ass method

  • how did you factor (x^2 -3x+9/4) to (x-3/2)^2 ??? I know that he square 3/2 to 9/4? Can you give me more details about that part .. thanks

  • this helped a lot more than what my teacher told me. Thanks for posting this up!

  • 3:09. Factors? What? Don't skip anything please, let us know what that is. Now I'm just confused again.

  • @xtrebleclefx you factor out the previous trinomial 2(x^2-3x+9/4) =2(x-3)(x-3) or

    2(x-3)^2

  • @comicreaper Thank you, a month after my final exam, haha

  • @xtrebleclefx Sorry man, hope you still managed.

  • Is this for gcse or a level please tell me its not for gcse

  • yay left handed!!!!

  • excellent tutorial. I was following yours to do my problem of -

    2x^2 + 16x + 82 = 0. I ended up getting (x+4)^2 = -50/2 or -25, which came

to, x +4 = +- square root of -25.. Since it's sq root of -25 or any neg. answer for that matter.. would it be UNDEFINED or an IMAGINARY #?

    Thank You

  • I couldn't have gotten into Calc without your help...

You are amazing. I love you.

  • hey thanx now i get it ;)

  • Yeah, it's slightly harder but you made it totally easy! Thanks! (:-

  • completing the square takes FOREVER. is there a faster way to solve that specific equation? (besides the quadratic formula cuz that can give you some weird answers.)

  • @converse48 quadratic formula or factor. that is all i ever use to solve these.

  • f(x)=a(x-h)^2+k

    whereas; h=-b/2a and k=f(h)

the put them in the equation

  • Comment removed

  • Oh my gosh! thank you thank you thank you! Esp. for breaking down the steps that were in between - the fractions. Obtained notes for this when I was not at school that day but could not figure out what was being squared and what was being multiplied.

  • you helped me soooooo much for my ib exams. thank you!! you are so much better than my teacher haha

  • shouldnt the andwers be 2 and 1

  • Quick question for anyone that might be able to help. Where does the multiplying both sides by 1/2 come from? I know he said it was supposed to be by 2. Im a bit confused there. Thx!

  • @boxer1029 he was going to divide the equation by 2 to make it simpler. multipying by 1/2 has the same effect.

  • @boxer1029 see the first value of 2x^2, he wants to get rid of the coefficient so if he divides the whole formula by 2, or halves it, the 2 becomes a 1 and the first value is x^2.

  • @boxer1029 when you factor the completed square term, and multiply the products you will see how the number came from

    say take for example

    x^2+6x+5=0

    x^2+6x+(6/2)^2=5+9

    x^2+6x+9=14

    (x+3)^2=14

    (X+3)(X+3)=x^2+6x+9

Did you see where it came from? If you are still confused, contact me.

  • thankyou so much! you literally saved my butt on a paper i'm handing in tomorrow.

    thanks again :')

  • Haha, what my teacher takes 1 hour to explain, you explain in 10 minutes, and after 10 more minutes of practising i master it LD. Thanks, ill watch your videos and i hope ill get my ib diploma

  • thnx a lot.

  • was struggling with these. Now you've just lost me completely!

  • I never got to understand this trick before..now I know!! thanks so much!!

  • This really helped, thanks!

  • does it work the same way for y= [equation], F(x)=[equation]

or does this only work for 0=[equation]

  • jesus look how fcking long this equation takes to solve!

  • I think its a lot easier if you just immediately subtract the constant (which is 3) on both sides first, then divide both sides by the leading coefficient (which is 2).
