  • what dumb ass gave this a thumbs down, they must be deaf? and should have their thumbs removed off of youtube

  • I'm a rather cold person, but I cry sometimes when I listen to her. She makes me feel human.

  • Sublime voce.Da brividi

  • she is a SINGER, not the shits that we have today.

  • deep....deeep! but i have drank from a well that will never go dry.....JESUS...WOMAN THOU ART LOOSE! AMEN!

  • sublime!

  • sublime.

  • wow

  • This is the song that defines pain, sorrow, and struggle. I love Nina, Rest her Soul

  • Wow!!! Never heard her before , I'm a fan. Her voice I's remarkable.

  • @mochamami916

    Welcome!

  • She's amazing!

    What'a great singer!

    Awesome!

  • the way she sings this song blows my mind, beautiful!

  • the song is from Porgy and Bess a old broadway musical written by George Gershwin and the only musical with a all african american cast for its time . Beautiful music came from that including Summmertime and this .

  • @gundamshogen2310 well... it's indeed from porgy and bess, but it's a really different rendition comparing to classic performances by Ella Fitzgerald for instance

not that much left from the original

  • @Manyakhin That's what we have ... Original Classical performances by classy African American Sisters/Mothers for some. We love them all and truly appreciate" the work of Nature's God"(Sun Ra), expressing its muti-dimensional elements through them. How about a real love shout out of gratitude for those African Americans who touched Gershwin's mind with their music...which he heard in that time. Probably did not get honorable mentioning.

Thank y'all for keeping that feelin' alive.

  • @Manyakhin I would have to completely agree with you on this. But you also have to take in to account that Ella is most definitely a true Jazz vocalist to where I would put Nina more in to the Blues. fits her style and voice the best.

  • @Manyakhin

that's because Nina Simon was an original herself and didn't need to be yet another Ella clone.

  • @gundamshogen2310 A seemingly minor point, possibly, but "Porgy and Bess" is actually an opera, although it does have deep roots in Broadway. It even had a later run as a Broadway play, with many parts converted to spoken dialogue. Now, though, it's considered legitimate opera, having been performed by the Met and Houston opera, among others. I agree, this is a beautiful rendition, but I really miss the B section of the song.

  • @tedwilsonjr Why wouldn't it have been considered legitimate before a performance by the Met and Houston Operas...as far I know it was always considered a legitimate opera, particularly b/c it was performed by an ensemble of CLASSICALLY trained African-American musicians.

  • @gundamshogen2310 It is not a musical it is an opera ... ans it is not a song , it is an aria :P

  • @gundamshogen2310 Porgy ans Bess is not a musical, it is an Opera

  • I am 21 years old and I greatly appreciate older music. It transports you, it moves and inspires. I wish they made more of this kind of music now. THIS WOMAN IS AMAZING, AND WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN.....moving!

  • this is pure class! no comment needed just listen and be transported!

  • Clássico!

  • My man's gone now Ain't no use a listenin' For his tired footsteps Climbin' up the stairs Old man sorrow's Come to keep me company Whisperin' beside me When I say my prayers When I say my prayers He come around He come up, he come around Ain't that I mind workin' Work n' me is travelers Journeyin' together To the promised land But old man sorrow Mountin' all the way with me Tell' me that I'm old now Since I lose my man Since I lose my man Since I lose my man
  • Awesome! Nina simply owns this.

  • chills down my spine

  • Maravilhosa Nina!!!!!!!

  • TRUE TALENT!!!

  • I truly love the voice and emotion she displays in each of her works.

  • on of theall time best .on a rainny sunday afternoon thinking about old times love and loss. sigh *

  • Nina cries this song for me... but old man sorrow.. tellin me that I'm old now, since I lose my man since I lose my man.

  • simply divine! sinead o'connor does a great tribute to this song. very different to ms simone's, but hauntingly delicious all the same. it's found on the gershwin tribute album, the glory of gershwin.

  • @czahnie

Take a look at the documentary of the making of the album - Larry Adler tears strips off O'Connor, but she delivers in the end. Really interesting insight on the pressures of performing.

  • totally. great song, my favorite singer

  • What she wants to say......i understand you ;-) wow great honestie :-)) i like you so so much.

  • I just wanted to say that the video for this song was nicely put together. It was nice to see Nina at different stages of her performing life. To me she always looks beautiful.Yes the song is packed with feeling and depth. Thanks for posting

  • @angelialvares Holy cow! Thanks for the compliment ))

I just felt the urge to upload the song which I'm just very fond of! Every note in it echoes in me.

I too find Nina beautiful every time she performs. I can't think of anyone else being on stage in a pink swimsuit and still being astonishingly beautiful..

I'm sure you understand what I'm trying to explain here...

  • @Manyakhin This is a fine recording, but Nina set such high standards that it does not even get into my top 10 by her. You asked me which ones I preferred. My favourites are (in no order)

I PUT A SPELL ON YOU, FOUR WOMEN, NOBODY, KEEPER OF THE FLAME, FEELING GOOD, BLACK IS THE COLOR OF MY TRUE LOVE'S HAIR, DON'T YOU PAY THEM NO MIND, I AM BLESSED, NE ME QUITTE PAS, and DON'T LET ME BE MISUNDERSTOOD. Wow, what a roll call! Aretha is divine, but in my humble opinion Nina outshone her.

  • @1408alan Hey, thx for answering! Even had to listen to some of those you mentioned for another time, and no - this one is my all time fave, and not only among NS songs :))

  • i think my heart skipped a beat just now.

  • I believe it was recorded in one take late at night . She was tired..and damn..she owns it. A real american treasure.

  • True emotional conveyance in her voice....makes ME sad

  • God, this one breaks my heart. I never heard the original version until finding some here today. I'm feeling the opposite of those of you who heard those first - I can't think of a better interpretation than Nina's. Her voice is just so honest and wounded.

  • @BerkeleyFightGuy totally agree here! best version ever

I can only advise to listen to Heifitz interpretation of Porgy & Bess for piano and violin - this one is extremely good too

  • no offense intended but this song was orginally written as an opera-type song. the style that this version is written in isn't like the original. but nicely performed, though.

  • nina simone was a classically trained pianist who studied at prestigious music schools

  • @dancingdiplodocus true! and a very talented one BTW if you saw any of the documentaries

she was complaining, pure thing, that they didn't let her become a classical pianist... but thanks to that we got Nina Simone that we all know

  • probably why she seemed to perform songs from all over

  • @TheKKB36 The song was written as opera imitating the blues. Nina Simone just brought it back to its roots, same as Miles did with Gil Evans. The fact that it works so well as a blues song is a testament both to her talent and Gershwin's brilliance as a composer.

  • @EOsborne318 You make a very valid point. Furthermore, this piece and most of (if not all) the other pieces in Porgy & Bess have become an integral part of the jazz standard tradition. The heart of that tradition is in interpretation and improvisation so it fits that Nina interprets Gershwin's tune as a blues/jazz hybrid thus vocally promoting the deep & brooding emotion of the lyric.

  • Beautiful voice! However I have to say I much prefer the original classical arrangement. I really think the sorrow of this song is just so well demonstrated in the higher part of the voice. That being said, I do really like this interpretation. :)

  • great singer!!

i never heard of her....but she is ..amazing!!

    i love her voice!!

  • love this song... thank you so much for uploading it!!!! LOVE YOU MANYAKHIN

  • @coleio14 thx :)) to be honest i uploaded some yrs (?) ago and never checked the comments :O but it appears to be quite popular here...

I can still remember the place, the moment and can recover the date when I first heard it... I still have a feeling as if Nina communicates directly to me with this song )))

  • this is by far the best rendition of this song i've ever heard. EVER. I've heard countless. where is this recording from?

  • Comment removed

  • 1967 RCA album "Nina Simone Sings The Blues" Probably one of the best albums she made.

  • thank you!

  • Beutiful...

  • My favourite black female singer. Forget Urethra Franklin, Nina's beyond Queen, she's empress status.

  • Why on earth do you have to make a snide sexual attack on Aretha Franklin to comment on the power and beauty of Nina Simone's voice? That's totally uncalled for and dumb.

  • Why on Earth do you have to type like such a smart ass? Say "snide" and everyone takes your side. How was this a sexual attack? Everyone has a urethra. It was just something funny that I heard. Besides, without Sam and Otis, she would be nothing.

  • I hate to admit it but until I heard Nina Simone Aretha Franklin was like a god... But now I wont ever hear her the same way... Dont get me wrong she still has an amazing voice just not as impressive. Nina is orgasmic Aretha is arousing LMAO

  • It is a great video and pictures. Unbelievable song from one of a kind.

  • she is an indulgence that i always turn to...

  • Leaves you speechless!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @bluehippo54 ....THIS NINA SIMONE IS SO DEEP IN THE SPIRITUAL THINGS YOU CAN FEEL IT IN HER TANTILIZING VOICE, IT PIERCES YOUR INNER CORE, IT'S BEEN SAID WHAT COMES FROM THE HEART TOUCHES THE HEART SHE'S FEELING GOOD , I KNOW WHAT SHE MEANS, OLD MAN SORROW TOOK ASEAT, TOLD HER SHE WAS OLD ONCE SHE LOST HER MAN, I FEEL THE SAME WAY WITHOUT MY MAN, NINA WE GOT THAT IN COMMON! LOL!/ KMS ! LMAO

  • Una voz , simplemente in igual, maravillosa.

    Me pone carne de gallina!!

  • you both need to go to a free clinic afterwards....tramps...i can't ask you to show some respect for nina....you both clearly have none for yourselves....

  • Pls cut the crap and go to some fucking chatting site.

  • Hey that's my name for you @ below! lol

  • precious

  • so soulful my shero

  • it may be hard to believe, but when i heard nina sing this song is my time of sorrow it actually made me feel better. it is really true that misery loves company. i could not believe another woman could feel the same depth of sadness as i. but, nina convinced me otherwise and in some kind of strange way it made me feel a just a little better knowing that there was someone out there who could feel the same depth of pain and that i was not alone in my misery. nina was a balm for my soul.

  • I can feel the sorrow in every note sung and played

  • amazing !!

  • This was filmed around 1968, and it is just fine. She's wearing white, and she is playing the piano---all before a 100% white audience! *(My father filmed it.) I was there. She's a heroine. Thank you kindly!

  • isnt she adorable

  • truly amazing performance. she's incredible.

  • maravillosa, maravillosa...!!!!

  • holy crap, this woman...

  • There was a documentary about her but I haven´t been able to find it.

  • The Legend, Frank Lords, UK

  • The still at 3:20 is a bit naughty - laughing her head off because she's lost her man!

    Great song, great performance.

  • that really stuck a cord. it made me cry for a sec wow wow wow. :)

  • Its nice to see pics of her because I have never actually seen or heard her music before.I would always hear references about her

  • OK- heard all the operatic ones, great. BUT THIS !!! THIS IS THE REAL DEAL! This is the best of the best...totally clear and understandable, and truly conveys the correct passionate emotions.

    MASTERFUL NINA SIMONE ~~ !

  • @20caratstone Agree!! Agree!! Got Louis Armstrong & Ella Fitzerald record of this, and have to admit - nowhere near!!!! Of course, Nina made it her own, but the best version ever!

  • if i could post tears...

  • christ, this is good.

  • wow

  • Love, love, love.

  • She is truly amazing

  • Yes , halas.

That's why the second part of her life and her career is so sad and irregular.

  • These fluctuations also characterized her own personality and personal life, worsened by bipolar disorder with which she was diagnosed in the mid-1960s, but was kept secret until 2004 after her death.

  • hypnotic and masterful.

  • agreed

  • ;(((((( my man is gone 2

  • my favorite artist

  • exquisite...........i've listened to her for many years....have a few CDs....this is one of the best

  • I'm transcribing this song

  • Wow! That's great. Will you share when you've finished? :) Also, a great song to transcribe would be You'll Never Walk Alone by her too.

  • BREATH TAKING BEAUTIFUL

  • beautiful, thank you for posting. great photos, some i haven't seen.

  • wow wow wow

  • Absolutely wonderful.

  • It an adaptation from Porgy and Bess, the mourning song, Serena lost her husband and grieving.

  • i dont understand the song. could someone pls explain?

    though it breathtakingly beautiful.

  • She is singing an opera aria from Porgy and Bess. The aria is sung by the character Serena after she finds out that her husband, Robbin, was murdered. I hope that helps. :o) And you're right. This rendition is breathtaking in a way that can't be described.

  • Truly inspirational to ANY artist in ANY place. One word... PASSION

Deep down from the bottom of the soul PASSION

  • Lord have mercy. Long live Nina. Gone but never, ever forgotten. Viva Diva.

  • I`m listening to this song and it`s like I`m the the same time in a grave and in the sky,in hell and in heaven,in day and in night, flying and falling...no one can do that feelings,no one but Nina Simone and her songs...

  • she was so real...im listening to this song with tears in my eyes..wow...now thats beyond music....

  • it is incredible. absolutely breathtaking. stuns me even.

  • She has what most singers today lack. Her music reaches out and touches your soul in such an amazing way. It breaks my heart to hear it. I hope she found rest among the stars.

  • she is so awesome!

this deep voice which makes you get goosebumps and this music which touches you deep inside...

i cant discripe the feeling i get from her music

  • there is a version by sinead o'connor, which is amazing too! try it, if you like this song...

  • Brilliant!

  • no words !!!

  • Who can do it better?

    My Nina's gone now...sleep well.

  • this song gives me chills everytime. incredible song by an incredible woman. love you nina

  • I was at a thrift store a few years ago and found a bunch of old cassettes.

One of them had this song by this woman I had never heard of her before.

The first time I heard this song, I about fell out of my chair because it was so beautiful.

Easily one of the greatest songs I've ever heard.

  • ...by one of the greatest singers I've ever heard, a match made in musical heaven!

  • u got that right

  • That was the way I reacted the first time I heard her; she was singing her 1959 recording of I Loves You, Porgy. She makes your heart ache.

  • God damn! Breathtaking and so sultry......

  • nina at her peak an unrivaled interpreter of songs amazing ,powerfull !

  • Pure fucking goosebumps.

  • Gershwin has NEVER been interpreted with more gripping soulfulness! The first time I heard this peice, wave upon wave of chill-bumps went through my body. I was stunned by the depth of raw, naked emotion she brought forth. The sheer power of her voice laid bare my own feelings, so much so that I felt... exposed and vulnerable... yet liberated and free! She showed me that it was safe to embrace and inhabit parts of my soul that I had been afraid of. In 4 and half minutes! She was amazing!!

  • well spoken

  • So true. Although, she doesn't do half badly with "I love you Porgy" either!

  • Bravo!Bravo! 1St to Nina-as well to u friend in music! That was so well said the I'm ramblin' now cause i'm jealousy. The best description ever. Thank You 2 U Both!
