  • do u wanna hear a secret? I know one.

  • This song has the potential to be awesome, but it ruined by that annoying fucking sound

  • I feel like my head is gone. My ears are receiving sound, but I can't... hear? This is weird. Which... ugh, do I like it? I think... wait, yeassssh eshc ?SS ?E? ?E F G?G? SHG YUIiiL??

    AHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! MY BRAIN!!!!!!!

  • that sound destroys my ears!

  • 5:00-5:36 is so soothing! To me, it represents death, which is the calm coda to life and an end to the pain of aging that this song conveys.

  • @michaelkmadsen wtf are you on?

  • @Cptheadstomp420 Haha nothing man. I just wanted to have the most pretentious comment on here! I think the "chaos inside an atom" guy kinda beat me tho...

  • @michaelkmadsen true.... you people are weirding me out....

  • @Cptheadstomp420 Sry I'll calm down :)

  • This makes me think of the seeming chaos inside of an atom.

Intuiting it from all the way out here.

  • just plain painful, i like animal collective but this shit is TERRIBLE

  • @deathspasm9 Most of their early work sounds really unlistenable to me too. Must be an acid thing.

  • SO GOOD IT HURTS

  • hello ghost friends : )

  • honestly this is one of the coolest thing iv ever heard.

  • its like you want to change it.... but you just cant

  • ouch, cool

  • Oh the beauty. It sucks that this gerneration of music is no where compared to this...

  • @WatterShades This came out in 2000. Start expanding your horizons if you think every musician on Earth declined within 10 years.

  • houseofteeth.bandcamp.com

  • animal collective , even this weird nerves cracking sounds are just beautiful , how can a band change someone's life so much , i dont know how people can talk shit about this band , this band its going to stay as a classic , as something that started somehtign new and seeing comments as the one of @evantstowers make sme feel even happier to know there ar emore people out there who love animal collective a smuch as me , and how you can fall in love with music , amazing , no words

  • If u didn't like this check out Someday I'll be as Tall as the Giant. It could open your mind to the album.

  • The noise is what I hear when in a dmt-induced paralysis. Dmt is what our brains produce when we sleep. Interesting...

  • i love Animal Collective but this song is awful, just awful

  • @deathspasm9 This song is painfully gorgeous dude, or dudette

  • that background noise is basically the same sound that i hear when i experience sleep paralysis! amazing

  • @mrsaganscosmos Yah I thought the same thing! I am sure thats where they got the idea from these sounds from.. astral projecting or something. I can't stop listening to this haha

  • Such a sweet music. The sound that supposedly "hurts" you, doesn't do that. Call me whatever you want, but it works as a barrier, a way that tthe band are telling you that even though the mellow symphony behind, there's always an obstacle. If you can abstract from that, the song is just plain lovely. So it's there for a reason, and without it the collective would be just another group of plain pop, with nothing more.

So, people who don't like it, either try to understand, or shut the fuck up.

  • 41 thumbs up for this? you want your music to hurt you so that you can learn and work for something. this is some pretentious hipster bullshit if i've ever seen it.

  • one word

    awesome!!!!

  • I feel like a wire is loose in my brain. I Love it.

  • First ever song by animal collective I listened to. Didn't need to get used to it. I loved it straight away.

  • after a few listens the piercing tones almost seem to soothe the eardrums

  • this song is so fucking amazing i cant stop listening to it.

  • auditory lsd

  • verbal acid

  • i got high off of listening to this song

  • If you understand animal collective, the sound will not bother you. I promise.

  • 2 people don't wanna hear a secret.

  • @fearmycomment I like Crystal Castles and Animal Collective. Try a different song this one isnt nessecarily for starters, or sobriety

  • i like it, i'll need to buy better headphones to listen to it on my ipod, but its really kind of soothing once you get used to it

  • This song cant be healthy.

  • this would be one annoying ass ringtone

  • Whenever I play this I have to turn the volume way down in fear of bursting my guinea pig's little ear-drums

  • his voice flowing in and out of the song... It makes me feel like whatever he's saying he is the most important thing ever.

  • @fearmycomment

Have you ever basked in cat shit before?

  • a dog started barking from 9 houses up when i played this as low as possible.

  • @PatThePhat1 near where i live most of the time when i play a.c. a dog downstairs starts to bark as well. when ever i put dave matthews or the grateful dead no barking, but as soon a.c. goes on. barkbarkbark. weiirrrrrrd

  • the background noises are great cause it gives you the vibe that the song is about something sad and painful, but i wish there was a version without them cause the actual notes are so beautiful and my ears always ring really loud after i listen to it haha

  • @fearmycomment Xiu Xiu and Crystal Castles are both bands that take some "getting used to." Most people will have their ears hurting on first listen to those bands, but if you keep listening you began to like them.

  • I'm listening to this song with my windows open, and it's really windy, and it makes it so much better.

  • very intriguing...i'm assuming that after a few more listens i will "get it."

i've recently been exploring AC's older material and it's been a great journey =]

  • haha, painful? what's wrong? I think it's totaly relaxed, calm and emotional in some way. I really really love it. so amazingly beautiful.

  • animal collective should be listed next to bands like the beatles and the grateful dead because they are and were more than just bands. They represented ideas, and a certain counter cultural identity which will be remembered indefinitely.

  • doggies understand this shit more than we ever could. its the music of the place they came from, to help us.

  • great song. wish somebody would post #3. I use it to drive anyone away when i don't want them in my presence. then i can sit back and listen to its ear-splitting beauty.

  • Mum: WHAT IS THAT?? ARE YOU SERIOUS? HOW CAN YOU STAND THAT? TURN IT OFF! SERIOUSLY, TURN IT OFF NOW!

She's expressed her disdain for my music in the past but nothing else has gotten such an intense reaction from her.

  • I don't understand it :/

  • i got thumbed down 4 times :(

  • @FUTTAHSIKK There there hun, tis alright.

  • They knew it would be a painful sound. It's like they set it up so that you must pay a price to listen to this song, it makes it so much more enjoyable to work for something. Your ear eventually adjusts to it as well, and then you'll love it. They've broken through the notion that music can't hurt your ears and still be enjoyable. I feel like Animal Collective is my teacher and they are teaching me so many things about music and life.

  • quit taking LSD haha

  • NEVER

  • @evantstowers the people that influenced animal collective led them to these conclusions...experimental music existed for decades before them, and that's where this can be traced back to...check out john cage or john zorn...

  • @PopCultureShaman Thanks for the suggestions, I liked them.

  • @evantstowers Right as this song started, my mother walked in and said, "What's that noise? I don't like that high pitched sound." This is blowing my mind. It's abrasive and serene, simultaneously. These guys rule.

  • @evantstowers

Well personally, I've listened to so much ear rape and other ear drum busting sounds that I guess the sound doesn't bother me... I kinda like it... It makes me imagine that theirs little translucent mini comets flying around my bedroom with no direction and varying speed... with their tails of light whipping rapidly through the air creating trails like a distant plane in the sky... This is why I like AC, their the make your own adventure story of music.

  • @Arcturusalt sounds about right

  • @evantstowers Your comment made me feel good

  • @evantstowers I see what you mean, but I think they did it because it was original, not especially so that ''you pay a price'' and to teach us about life and music........Although that might have been an afterthought...

  • @evantstowers I disagree. Kind of. They knew it would be painful. But it fits the mood of the lyrics, not like you have to pay a price to listen. The lyrics are about the pains of aging (like many Animal Collective lyrics), and like you said, your ears adjust to the music. So the music, painful at first (like aging,) becomes sort of... a familiar friend. When it ends, you still hear it. It sticks with you. That's just like aging. It's fucking terrible to realize, but we get used to it.

  • @unkommon2001 Do you think they actually thought of that when creating this?

  • @evantstowers That kind of idolization / hero-worship is generally unhealthy and not productive.

  • @evantstowers If that's the case, then I must actually love Adele, because my ears are still bleeding from the last time I heard "Someone Like You."

  • Their sounds are on a borderline of bliss and pain for me. I really like it!

  • I think this is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard! I personally love the buzz, it is soothing to me and I can stand it loud. [:

    this makes my braingasm

  • love fleet foxes. love this more. one of the most beautiful things I've ever had the joy of listening to.

  • @hisblood27 boths good

  • 2deep4u

  • Fleet Foxes are good but these guys are awesome.

  • This song is strangly soothing, almost cathartic in a way.
