  • I found the sheet music for this "Slow Martch"" at mindlabratory dotcom under the music section. Enjoy and post your interpretations

  • what is the actual name of this tune?

  • I love it! It doesnt have to be blindingly fast to be great fiddling , such a refreshing change. Thanks Lori.

  • Isn't that the old King's Own Scottish Borderers slow march?

  • It's amazing.. Keep it up!

  • 666 likes.... scary number.... time to make it 667 :-D

  • @god0bless0the0uk

  • i also play the fiddle i wish i was that good though /:

  • @Philatanus3 asshole

  • @jabulanififa i know ppl these days -.-

  • @Philatanus3

    I agree!

  • I am sorry to say but you got a bad position, you should try fixing it, because if you play like that for years, it's going to be hard to fix your position and I mean really hard.

  • @heywatsupf What a stupid comment - People can play in whatever position they're most comfortable in. You're most likely just plain old jealous.

  • Would you play music with my bow?

  • Buy Lori's Scottish music CDs at ISLE Music Scotland and Footstompin

  • I love it, thanks for posting.

  • je jouerais bien du violon avec cette jolie fille qc

  • Delightful! It does sound very Scottish.

  • I thout this was delightfull. I play banjo and guitar and could feel my heart through the sound of the strings.peacefull,fullfilling.soothing

  • Hi, I have a question. Is the Fiddle tuned like a bass guitar with E-A-D-G? Thanks

  • @BethYeshuaMacon G,D,A,E

  • Beatiful and thanks for sharing.

To you complainers about position watch Truman Price play

  • @bugs5ca

Yeah- but I have great memories of Truman and "Westefer" playing for our group "the Marysville Cloggers"

    Well done gentlemen!

  • Beautiful..Sounds Nova Scotian.

  • @hexcane You can angle the bow to run across two strings. It very rarely happens in classical violin, but a lot of fiddle tunes do so. Actually it takes some practice just to not accidentally hit the adjacent strings when you first start playing. It's one of the reason beginners squeak so much... that and inexperienced bowing.

  • @hexcane you can only bow two stings if they are next to each other (by altering the angle and pressure of the bow)

  • Dangit, press dislike by accident :S

  • @hexcane The strings are positioned so that it is possible to play one string on its own or two at once comfortably. By moving away from the bridge it is actually possible to play 3 at once while using more weight. 4 is even possible but depending on the expertise of the player with varying degrees of compromise to the tone.

  • very much the upper half. Right folks, this is Folk music. Firstly look how beautifully free her right wrist is, thats why the sound is so free and gorgeous. The scroll is down cos that is often the style of folk fiddlers, it makes a darker earthier sound, and the scroll does not need to be up as one does not need to access the higher postitions! And use of upper half is also stylistic and influences the tone also. Critics learn some facts before u criticise!! Great playing, Beautiful, Well done

  • Well done, beautiful playing, I tried to troll through the comments to find what some people had been saying negatively about posture to address those criticisms specifically and got to about page 5 and got bored looking. Frankly it is irrelevant. You are playing beautifully. Great sound, tuning style and phrasing. All I can think is these idiots who think they are experts cos they have had a few classical lessons though probably play like shit have noticed your scroll is down and you are using

  • Magic musician ! Le gach dea guí ó Eireann. ( Every best wish from Ireland )

  • very nice lovely.

  • i love this song. still learning it, not eazy. wish you would teach me it Lori!!!

  • Hey Lori, it's Cheryl Forman. as you know me, i'll stick up for you :P emm, i agree with all these people who say it's beautiful! xxx

though.. taking into consideration.. this is an old video, and you're still improving! :) xxx

  • Love the feel of her playing. Kind of steady and strong. Nice

  • Strong and sensitive at the same time. Nice job.

  • SHEET MUSIC PLEASE.

  • omg, screw the hand position thing, i've never in my life seen FIDDLERS holding the violin right, its awesome that you're into it and having fun and we totally enjoy it, that was great

  • boringgg

  • To play like that, so long as I still had hands and a fiddle after, I just wouldn't mind where my hands went - like, whatever it takes ?!

Absolutely beauitiful. So who's complaining ?!?

"There's nowt as strange as folk."

  • Thar is beautiful, no flaws and awesome!!!! Look forward to seeing more from you... Again That was beautiful!!!!

  • awesome playing !

  • I need...... SHEET.... .MUSIC.... please :)

  • @jjwierd @jjwierd I was in the same boat as you....until I finally came across this! enjoy! scribd.com/doc/2864342/Tams-Slow-March

  • @arjunab1 THANKYOU so much! ahha I was about to lose my mind.

  • @jjwierd you don't need sheet music!listen to it listen to it again then find the notes on your instrument.this would be a great slow tune to develop your ear with.also you pick up part of the stylistic approach of her playing violinists mainly play from dots fiddlers from ear.to play this kind of music you must trust your ear over everything else.that is not to say there aren't allot of good collections of tunes written down but you must be able to play from how it sounded good luck

  • @dancingfeetylem That is so true, and after two weeks of practice. and a LOT of re-watching this video... I finally can play something that sounds like this :D but thanks for the little motivational speech :)

  • @jjwierd ta I also need to find the motivation to do the opposite develop my music reading skills

  • @dancingfeetylem that's what makes music easy... trust me :D

  • nova scotia

  • I like! =)

  • Anyone out there know why the region between England and Scotland is referred to as "the marches?" I always wondered why.

  • @davidrodgersNJ

i do not know, maybe someone else knows. keep woundering till someone out there like me knows.

sorry i was not much of a help

    good luck finding the answer

  • @davidrodgersNJ

This might Help, particularly the Etymology section :-

    wikipedia - search for marches

There are also the more widely known Welsh Marches between England and Wales.

Marches are basically a border region.

  • A true demonstration of folk music and feeling from any country. It's about having fun and getting a nice sound, regardless of technique. Sounds great!

  • not bad

  • Lovely playing.

  • What a beautiful tune. I will learn this immediately. Thanks for the performance!

  • Nice chick!

  • @mixtaperewind

    Double stoppings good, eh? :D

  • Only one word to discribe your talent....! Amazing! Bravo! I would love to learn the name of that piece

  • This is fantastic! Do you tune your violin differently than the standard EADG tuning for this?

  • @bitterfly77 I don't think she does.

  • what grade are you on?

  • the lower half of the bow does exist you know...

  • thats all u can say...u cant say its sounds great as well?? besides, fiddlers dont normally pay attention to finesse details that strictly classical musicians pay attention to.

  • erk

  • Pardon my noobness, but that's a 4/4 right?

  • hey just want to that your playing is so beautiful i brings such a peace if mind keep on playing

  • well done tha is amazing! i play the viola. do you have to go on the E string in that piece? if not , i want know where you got the music from :)

Good to see a person from the scottish borders playing on here.

    Great job 5 star

  • coolio. i'm learning how to play the violin :) plus the piano double :)

  • very very good

  • ;-)

  • You guys are criticizing, but I'm sure that anybody could come up with a problem with your playing.

  • Don't listen to people yacking about hand position and posture. You play the way you play and if they don't like it--who cares? That was wonderful, I wish I that good.

  • @Kirke182 gerg

  • @Kirke182 me and my gran who has played for 80 odd years had this very conversation last week when she noted my hand and fiddle position. Being completely self taught I do not use anything other than the first position and I can hold the fiddle In some odd positions at times but it really doesnt matter. there is no right or wrong in my opinion, just good sound or horrid sound! And yes I squeak at times!

  • @sixyearcycle Generally, when people log onto these clips, ignore the music and attack every little thing they can about position and posture, it's jealousy. Either they know they're not as good and it rankles them or they took lessons for years and get mad when somebody self-taught playing in a way they were told is wrong plays as good as they do or blows them away. Then there's the age thing too. People get jealous when a kid at 6 or 7 is already better than they are or will ever be.

  • The sound is beautifull but you'd care about you're hands and body position.

Anyway I love the way you play the violin

  • Tnak you for that. I almost fell in love.

  • That was beautiful.

  • the hand posision !! really nice !!

  • Beautiful sound. Never heard this song before and now the bar is set.

  • She needs better posture...

  • You've got an incredible wrist. Great sawing too. Thanks.

  • good job!!!! :)

  • Keep up the good work. . .quality sound and presentation. . aye!

  • what great melodic quality and resonance!

  • wow this is beautiful. i want to learn to play something like this, but sadly i am bow challenged.

  • good job Lori

  • Lori u owns :) Good Job I Like Ur Violin xDDD =) <3 Love And Hugs :P

  • omg! ur sooo good!!!

    Perfect!<3

  • Beautiful. And great job of recording that! Excellent playing and gorgeous sound.

  • Your violin and your skill is awesome!!! What a great job & beautiful violinist!

  • love at first sight. :D ooopppss i ment love at first sound. :)

  • Nope no frets! :) Although, I actually found the violin easier than the guitar and I started with the guitar and then went to the violin. I'm hoping to add a mandolin to list this Christmas...hint, hint, Mom and Dad. :)

  • No, not mandolin!

Banjo - at least you can play 1/4 notes once in awhile (clawhammer style).

What did the mandolin player say to the Bass player?

Who knows, she talks so fast, who can hear the words.

  • Haha, that's funny. :) The reason I want to try the mandolin is because the strings are the same notes as the violin. And, my family will tell you I have no trouble playing things fast! Most of the time (they say) I play the piano so fast that they can't even spit out the words (if they are singing with me). :)

  • weird how scottish music changed so much over there.lol cape breton still got it tho!

  • beautiful! loved it

  • I recently recieved a violin from my parents. I am coming from playing a guitar, so I have a question. WHERE ARE THE FRETS!!!!!!!!

  • lol. No frets. sorry, you'll have learn where all the notes are by feel and ear. A lot of private teachers will put tape marking where your fingers go for certain notes when teaching beginners. That'll help when learning.

  • they actually got you a violin???

without your wanting one in the first place?

  • XDDDDD Good luck. Violin/foddle is a different animal.

  • Haha, there are no frets ya sill person :P

  • ...muscle memory :)

  • I'm impressed. You make it look easy. Did you play at the Holyrood homecoming this past July? Also, have you ever heard this song played on the bagpipes or have you played with a piper?

  • i wish i could once veiw a vid without seeing 3 or 4 know it alls adding their 2 cents to every performance. shes clearly great. if you can do better post it. then we can rip you apart on small things that dont matter anyways.

  • Haha I agree! Something about violinists...bunch of know-it-alls I guess! (And I can say that, I'm one myself ;-)

  • Very good, looks and talent, keep playing luv.

  • Absolutely beautiful!

I don't think you can compare the classical violin to the fiddle and claim one style is superior to the other. When played by an individual, this music has great emotional value, on a par with a full orchestra. It just depends on how you want to listen to it.

  • Beautifully played song!

  • Great sound. 7893458, she's not leaning too much, we're not talking classical music but fiddle here. Vibrato doesn't necessarily mean improvement. That was so hard to teach my Asian students. You might notice the position of the right hand (bow) is pretty high as well. This is normal too. It's a matter of sound/balance.

FYI, if you want to play 3 string at once, use a violin with a rather flat bridge, or a bow you don't like too much. Cheers!

  • I never knew that fiddle was done differently than classical music, all the time I have been playing I have been being told that you can never lean down while you are playing, but I guess I have been playing classical this whole time so that is probably why!

Good thing I lost my fiddle books (but found them again today) otherwise I would've been playing wrong for months!

  • Leaning over too much? Looks like she is well endowed and may need to, ever think of that. Vibrato is only really needed on long notes. Listen more and look less.

  • Wauw !! ö

  • Lovely sound! Lovely lady, too!

  • whats the difference between violin and a fiddle? is it the sound or are they the same instrument?

  • it's the sound ;).

  • same instrument. fiddle because it is being played informally... it is the informal way of calling a violin. fiddle because they're not playing classical music on it etc

  • itzhak perlman the classical Violinist always called himself a fiddle player and in Galicia the Celtic area of Spain they often call the Fiddle a Violin. Since the popular swing of Traditional music has hit in the 60's the term "Fiddle" and "Violin" has been characterized by how it was played and not how it was made. There is a Fiddle style of music (folk that cannot necessarily be notated) and Violin classical which is often notated. So genre tradition and style are the biggest differences.

  • same instrument, different styles of playing

  • Bob Wills said it best. A violin makes music and a fiddle makes money. Same instrument. Large variety of strings make it tremendously versatile. Great instrument to try and master., Except for your family who have to listen to your early days. Nothing sounds much better than good fiddling. And the sounds a bad or beginner can make are about like finger nails on a chalk board.

  • amazing violin, amazing song, amazing PLAYER... beauty is in your bloodstream ;)

  • piponaaaa que eres una pipassss

  • beautiful chords

  • chill out man, he has a right to comment I play both classical and trad. irish mostly not upright but wouldnt beat anyone up if they told me the way they think I should play.

But I think she plays very well 5 stars from me !

  • chill out!! best way to fiddle is by feeling comfortable... u only have to sit up straight if your trained in an orchestra.... stop giving out and post a tune of your own and we compare hows that sound....

  • Taus802 will you be posting a video demonstrating your violin playing skills soon?

  • tru ya can get a bad back from it but if she is comfortable playin that way and she sounds great she doesnt have to change!! I say you probably would if she doesnt play classical music..ya never knw though!! she could play both! or many other different styles!

  • amazin =)

  • You are good Lori

  • so if you want to learn to fiddle do you buy a violin

  • yeah there the same instrument just different style of playing..

  • hey i play both the fiddle and the violin its almost the same but not

  • Wow! Shes realy good. At first I thought it was a whole band! Thumbs up!

  • whats the difference between a violin and a fiddle ?

  • In general, the violin tends to be cleaner because, for obscure reasons, fiddlers seem to believe that rosin residue improves the sound of the instrument. Other than that, no difference whatsoever. The difference mainly applies to the style of playing the same instrument.

  • so both look the same?

  • Yes, it's the same intrument being played in different styles.

  • The fiddle has a flatter bridge, easier to play the chords.

  • I heard the difference was one has a slight arch were the strings are and other is flat. It's just something I heard and I wouldn't know for sure because I don't play I just like listening to both.

  • No, it is the same instrument, identical in all respects. Any fiddle player can play any violin, and any violinist can play any fiddle - the difference is only what different musicians call the instrument.

Any play can get their instrument modified - some bridges are flatter to make double stopping (ie, chords) easier to play, but that makes changing between individual strings more difficult. You can also have different kinds of strings for different sounds, or add microphones (pickups), etc.

  • the instrument is no different its just how its played

  • the instrument is actually different to the violin. The fiddle had only 3 strings but the melody is only played at two of the 'cuse the 3rd is used as bordun.
