  • Loosing ur home in foul swoop is tough to say the least!

We had a reporter loose his house in the 1983 Ash Wed Fires [Victoria - Australia], reporting it as it went up in flames & it has stuck with me all this timethough him having lost all composure at the time may have had something to do with it?

  • his son is my good friend

  • sux dood...

  • Damn, Stan Miller's still looks fine!!

  • amen to that lol

  • this is so sad!!! my friend lived in La and she lost her home

  • How this guy retains his composure in the face of this is absolutely beyond me. Now there's a strong reporter. As someone who's been in the business, I can say that reporting on that stuff is hard enough even when you have nothing to do with it. I cannot imagine, not even remotely, what fortitude this individual possessed to remain so composed even on camera. Hero or not, he has my admiration.

  • fire pwn

  • OWNED

  • that week was hell i was at school in Rancho Bernardo and our principal gave a long speech about the fires and how the police said we all have to evacuate we were one of the worst hit cities and its comin up on a year it was october 22, 2007 when it started and it's the same situattion again the santa an winds are comin and are strong and its in the high 80's we have to avoid this

  • I saw this during the fires when I was evacted out of Julian, and I actually cried.

  • lovely video :)

  • I feel so bad.. I hope he rebuilt his house or has something that his family really loves!! Nature sucks sometimes!

  • Acting like this guy is a hero is similar to giving an award to a prostitute for working in the rain.

  • respect

  • Oh, yeah we give far more % of our GDP to aid than the USA. In fact I believe we're number one at that. We also give more in absolute terms per person. Look it up at Nationmaster. Then again giving more then the USA isn't such a big deal since most European countries manage that. But you never hear us shouting that of the rooftops like you.

  • jpbalkenende europeans have nothing to shout about any ways they don't give shit.Lol thats a laugh not one Euro country come close to us let alone the entire Eu.

  • Like I said look it up on Nationmaster. IIRC Germany alone gives more than the entire USA so stfu.

  • Looked it up for you. Economic aid top of the list UK 11 billion, 2nd France 10 billion, 3d Japan 9 billion. And after that the richest of them all with a whopping 300 million inhabitants the USA: a measly 7 billion. So no you're not number 1 and if we look at as a % of GDP, which is the only way in which you can measure generosity, America is number 21 of the 22 countries listed. We give about 12 times as much. So pat yourself on the back, idiot.

  • DAMN MAN. Somebody used this as a part of their presentation in Geography, I laughed for like a second, I know everyone inside wanted to laugh, I feel sorry for the guy, but nobody would laugh, only me :\.

    :( So sad.

  • you werent raised right "xantochoroi"

  • these kinds of horrible events efeeft every one <:(

  • You know, this guy still has a job, with plenty of overtime and since the broadcast, people have been sending him all kinds of donations. Must be nice.

Volunteerism in News casts? I think not.

There hearts and prayers are with the less fortunate. But, that's is about it.

Yes. He has a place to stay, plenty of red cross attention, plenty of donations.

The rest of us are just screwed.

  • God bless you dude.

  • This is so sad. Larry is one of my dad's best friends--he was even my dad's best man at his wedding--and for this to happen to such an amazing person is just heartbreaking. I remember spending a lot of time in that house when I was really little.

These fires were devastating, and it's a shame that they hurt so many people. My heart goes out to Larry and his family, and everyone else who was affected.

  • sick little punk

  • I wish I knew who you were cuz i'd kick you fuckin ass

  • kinda makes me sick when i read all the negative stuff written by the ghouls out there.Just want to send some good wishes and hope for the future to all the folk in Cali and EVERYWHERE else that are affected by these natural disasters.

  • I lost my job because of this fire, how about everyone that comes on here and is GLAD lives have been shattered and laughs at our burdens really should look in the mirror, You will see a big fat red white and blue elephant, with GOP written on your forehead. You generalize us Americans, for generalizing the world... you guys really are educated about what America really is.

  • Acting like this guy is a hero is similar to giving an award to a prostitute for working in the rain.

  • What's Larry going for? A national job on the major networks?

  • why are you busy bashing capitalism and the us...pointless and stupid since, especially in a country as close as canada, the us is such a major figure...what does canada have that the us doesnt? and also, just by living in canada means that america has already fucked you

  • God of war indeed.

Live at least a couple of decades before you partake with grown ups.

You are not even wise enough to realize that clearly, you know nothing.

  • i hope you realize you are promoting the same stereotype that was used by Hitler and the Nazis to kill off millions of you Jews...

  • Somebody left a candle burning!!

  • Lets call this what it is.... "THE CHICANO ATZLAN BROWN MEXICAN POWER FIRES OF 2007" Revenge for not passing amnesty to 40 million brown turds.

  • He was @ the chargers game with his family . BE SAFE LARRY !! FROM SAN DIEGO LOCALS BBH CRew

  • This guy is collecting a broadcasting paycheck. Pfft

  • pak why you writing the name of jesus if you dont accept other ideas?

  • jesus is a fictional character

  • he probably doesnt want all the debris in his eyes

    are you an idoit?

  • jesus christ mickeystown would you just fuck off no one gives a shit about what you have got to say

  • Por Dios! Estan hablando de que la casa de un periodista de ellos se le quemo la casa en San Diego. Luego, el mismo que se le esta quemando la casa, sale al aire informando sobre SU CASA que se esta incendiando.

  • Actually, we didn't even lose one.

  • This is the end of the world , people, the time has come, this is the beggining of the end.

  • Yo stop talking fucken shit. All u haters would be crying like little bitches if your house burnt down.Stop kicking a man while he is down. Show some respect

  • If there is a hell, you are going to burn in it. Go back to where ever you are from. Or don't they want shit like you there either?

  • This poor man lost his home. He and his family poured so much of his life and his money into building their dream and now it's gone. Imagine if you lost your home that you spent poured so much of your heart into building and have it taken away from you whether it was a firestorm, an earthquake, a landslide or anything else and then some asshole makes fun of your own tragedy for their amusement. Wouldn't you feel the same way?

  • My heart goes out to Mr. Himmel and his family and to all of those who lost their homes in this horrible tragedy as well as to those who died and especially to the firefighters who time and time again are willing to risk their own lives to save others.

And if the mods are watching this, I think that the spammers need to be banned so we can offer our sympathy to those who have suffered.

  • I LOVE Larry Himmel! He's my local reporter here in San Diego! He's always been so great and fun and outgoing! So sad to see this happen to him.

So sorry for him....and everyone else who lost their home.

  • Hmmm I'm eating a burguer.. damn.. its really tasty!

  • By your logic, where in the world would one build their house? Every place in the world has its environmental risks; Southern California is going through a historic dry period, fires of this magnitude are unprecedented. You see the true nature of some people when they choose to disparage people while they are going through something like this. Real civil.

  • Bravo!

  • You people that reply to this and spat your garbage make me totally sick. That was my aunt, uncle and cousins's home. They lost everything, including the pictures of my father, my aunt's brother, who passed away two months ago. To use this as a place to spat your foul thoughts and feelings is totally insensitive and morally wrong. My family and I will provide whatever we can to larry, joan and miles. My heart goes out to all of you !!

  • I didn't read all these comments, just a few, but how can people be talking shit over this? I watched the news as he watched his home burn down. Get some respect for what we in San Diego are going through. Grow up and take your petty online drama elsewhere. Stop talking about the war, it has nothing to do with these fires. Show some respect, honestly, grow up.

  • nothing at the moment

    just drinking water

  • where are you from?

  • it was a rhetoricle question

    damnn, your fucking stupid

  • stop bringing iraq into this

this video isnt about fucking iraq, so go find a video that is and comment that shit

its about san diego burning down idiot

  • "Dont fucking cry like racist cunts!"

    how are we racist?

because my homes burning down and im not more concerned for the people in iraq at the moment

i guarentee that if your hometown was up in flames, iraq would be farthest from your mind

  • you dont know how much it sucks watching your hometown burn down, its scary and for people in san diego it is real

were not watching these fires over youtube

we can see them from our backyards coming closer to our homes

    so just stop

  • mickeystown, your completly changing the subject on this video. Its about the people that are losing there homes

i'm san diegan and i had to evacuate a couple days ago, thankfully my house is okay but stop ranting about how much you hate americans and say something smart

  • Mickeystown, Are you a muslim or have some other mental disorder? What is your problem?

  • sfmm4life wrote "god people are so hateful"

That isn't always true. Some god people are nice in spite of their religion. LOL

  • haha

    oops

i meant it like "gosh, people are so hateful."

    lol

    thats funny though.

i never would have thought of it that way...

  • sfmm4life, I knew what you meant. I thought my mis-quote funny. I had noticed all the comments about peoples 'hearts' having emotion. Figure of speech we seldom think about.

  • haha ohhhh ok.

yeah i figured you were misquoting or really thought i said that.

    anywho it was funny

    :]

  • Mickeystown You only make other atheists look like assholes too. Say something nice like "I wish you well. I sacrificed a goat for you"

  • Haven't read all your posts, MT, but that one looks just fine.

    -- San Diegan and atheist

  • I'm very sorry about your loss. I'm glad you and your family are safe.

    Love and Respect.

    Mu Chapter class of 2005

  • That's gotta be the most devastating thing ever. I don't know how he managed to get through that.

  • Love and Respect Brother... I'm glad your safe...

    - Nick Goad

    Iota Kappa Chapter - #18

  • No one knows the real cause of the fire, except one person...an arsonist who caused this. But my father believes the wind knocked some electrical wires down and the winds blew it all over the place.

  • This is truly a catastrophe and I certainly hope that the residents in the affected areas get their lives straightened out fast. Pres. Bush...COME THROUGH FOR THESE PEOPLE IN A BIG WAY instead of putting so much emphasis on Iraqi citizens.

  • RIDGECREST, Calif. — A dispatcher with the Ridgecrest Police Department says police there haven't received any reports of any damage or injuries after an earthquake with 4.3 magnitude was recorded in the area.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake hit at 5:22 this morning about 15 miles north of Ridgecrest.

Ridgecrest is about 127 miles northeast of Los Angeles.

  • thats is so heart breaking, especilly when you are a reporter, doing a story in front of your own home taken away from you!

  • Now that's what I call PROFESSIONALISM.

Good thing his family is safe from the fires.

  • dude this is sad

um i WAS evacutated and i just returned home

    i live in ramona

but what most idiots dont get is that it WAS accidental

2 transformers were knocked down by the santa ana winds

[which are what keeps san diego so hot even in the winter becuase their VERY STRONG hot currents]

and the winds kept the fires going

    please people

    get your facts straight

and pray for ALL the people that lost their homes

  • whats up with all the fires

  • miyoshi82

Just google Drudge (The drudge report) there are links to a number of stories already about arson in connection with the southern california fires.

  • that is sooo sad i cryed when that first aired.....

all i know well there is a rumor going around that 2 little kids were playing with fire and thats how one fire got started down here... i am not enterly sure if that is true but it is some crazy stuff and my prayers go out to all those people who lost their homes.

  • thats very sad

  • wow~~

  • Jesus H Fucking Christ people, go rant somewhere else. Hundred of people in Southern California have lost their homes, and Larry Himmel sadly had to watch his home go up in flames.

Have some compassion for people who are going through a living hell and still keeping a smile on their face and their chin up.

Larry, I remember your early San Diego days, with Swami Sweatsocks, and your other routines, and I am so sorry that you, and others, are having to go through this.

  • I'm too young to remember his early days, but I'll always remember his News 8 segment: "Larry's Neighborhoods" where he goes around the county and does reports on some of the coolest things.

    Once again, God Speed Larry.

  • wow shit that sucks. it got fairly close to my house and stopped. dam that blows

  • It is very naieve to think that these fires are from accidental causes. We went from zero to 10 fires in no time. Saturday afternoon the news reported the red flag warning. <28 hrs later, So Cal is on fire. I know in my gut some sick POS lit the brush to get his kicks.

  • 823 comments on this video. 752 of them are worthless comments by Mickeystown. Other worthless information includes:

A rat can last longer without water than a camel.

Your stomach has to produce a new layer of mucus every two weeks, otherwise it will digest itself.

The Declaration of Independence (the very official copy in the Rotunda of the National Archives) is written on parchment, not paper.

  • Feels like I'm smoking six packs of cigaretts over here. Smells like a good day for a work out.

  • lol very friendly indeed -.-

  • well heres some things New Zealand can boast that you cant we were the first to invent nuclear power (even tho we are a nuclear free country) we were the first to climb mt Everest, we proved hollywood wrong and created a box office hit outside of hollywood (Lord of the Rings) we were the first to give women the right to vote and we were ACTUALLY the first to fly and we have historical documents to prove it but because we r so small nobody seems to care -.-

  • Your country is too small to have much of an impact on the world and I don't think it is militarily capable of imposing its' will on any country. Maybe it's a good thing you don't have anything we want;)

  • mickey,

    what did they have before?

  • mickeystown

The Iraqi people now have freedom, the terrorists have all but given in and by stopping Iran they hopefully will live in peace. War sucks, people die but sometimes there is no choice. When Iran nukes Israel and the new president clinton does nothing we will see what happens on the other side of the coin.

  • mickeystown

Yes part of the reason was to make sure we were able to BUY oil in the future, if you cut off our oil in WW2 we couldnt have made it out of France. But we didnt take their oil.

  • mickeystown

Yeah we drew the terrorists into Iraq, so what? Maybe we should have attacked New Zeland....

  • mickeystown

We didnt make the terrorists who attacked us, they grew stronger in the 1990's because of fools and wimps like you. We are winning in Iraq, what has New Zeland EVER done? Nothing!

  • mickeystown

WE didnt take their oil you fool! get a clue

New Zealand is a shit hole, you have nothing to worry about...

  • mickeystown

Well go to africa and feed them then, and dont forget to stop by Iraq and ask the terrorists to stop killing the Iraqis, asshat!

  • I've also traveled to a number of other countries (Australia too!) and there is still no better place to live than here. What exactly are you doing to make your country a better place? Denigrating ours sure doesn't help anyone except to make you feel better about yourself and your country.

  • This really sucks, the wind and fuel of this fire is just azaming to think about. It should not have been this bad, if tree huggers would let the communities cut some fire breaks and clear some growth. This problem has been going on for years...

  • It appears that you've got some issues in your own country that probably need to be addressed before you start making comments about ours. We do have our faults and as a black man in America, I have experienced the best and the worst of Americans.

  • Wow. That's really fucked up man.

  • I feel bad for him.

The horrible things happening in Africa and Iraq shouldn't be used to belittle his suffering, it should help us understand the world's suffering. Let tragedies bring us together, not pull us apart. Bad things are happening in the world, and each of us is responsible for finding the solution.

  • English "Firefighter" is funny.

  • As a Christian, you make me sick. Sure, we went into Iraq and caused the death of a lot of innocents. But why would God punish us, instead of protecting the innocents? Wouldn't that be more indicative of a benevolent God, if he directly acts on our world in such obvious ways? It makes no sense. God doesn't punish people until Judgment.

  • owned.

  • California is possession of the Hawaii native. We are anxious about global warming. Save the earth. Save a whale!White crime!

  • he got owned

  • Excerpt from New Zealand Wikipedia entry:

"Despite significant social and economic advances during the twentieth century, Māori tend to cluster in the lower percentiles in most health and education statistics and in labour-force participation, as well as featuring disproportionately highly in criminal and imprisonment statistics.

  • that terrible for him, God bless him and all the people suffering in California.

  • for some reason i don't have sympathy for any of these people. there are people starving in africa who have nothing who are forced to deal with loss and death every day. and then an american's house burns down and the world stands still. boo hoo.

  • You're sick. This has NOTHING to do with people dying in Africa. The world isn't standing still over this. America is.

  • he's right.

  • Guess what. They don't have to care about what happens to starving people in Africa. Shouldn't they have to worry about their own problems? If your house burned down you wouldn't say, "Oh, my house burnt down, this automatically means I shouldn't feel bad about my own problems because there are starving people thousands of miles away." Get a clue.

  • jimmers205!

GO TO AFRICIA! Leave canada and go help those people right now or shut the fuk up!

  • this sucks for him

  • .com

  • this is horribly sad. i feel horrible for them.

  • But, in the end, who's running your country?

  • Get out the marshmellows!!!!

  • Maybe it was the Maori from New Zealand...

  • you guys should watch "no no i dont want the bug"

  • i total agree but with people living out in the middle of nowhere in southern Cal. with multi million dollars homes we can't do that. Plus not only that but the EPA sucks and is corrupt.

  • All muslims are praying for an end of this terrible fire.

  • All of the Muslims...yeah...Except for the extremists who hate America.

  • Mickeystown

    Take your business somewhere else.

  • CBS News has learned U.S. officials will officially declare California's Santiago Fire an arson and offer a $50,000 reward to find the arsonist...

  • Larry Himmel is a friend of my family. He's a good man, and it was heartbreaking to see him broadcast this news. It just goes to prove that disasters (natural and man-made) can happen to anybody, and that in their time of need, you help out where you can. I give him major compliments for holding his head high in such a time of sorrow and loss. What a man. What a well-grounded human being.

  • What allot of people including the firefighters who r putting out these fires don't realizes is that this is natural. It gives the forest fresh new healthy soil, for fresh new healthy trees to grow from. They should just let it burn I mean it's not like half if not all of these people don't have insurance anyways.

  • It is natural because of the Santa Ana winds, but it may also root from arson or accidental burning as well. It could not have been widespread if it had been an isolated situation. This is a real catastrophe, and it is a combination of both natural and man-made factors that lit the fires.

  • come on you americans..this was al been set up. Dont you know that's its all about global warming. You've been washed up by the government that this was the cause or will lead to the factor of global warming. Idiots

  • if anything i would say the Sun is growing larger i mean it is middle aged right ? it's possible right?

  • It's middle aged, but the star still has 4 or 5 billions more years left in it's lifespan.

  • it's possible arson could of played a role in this but who really knows all we can do now is pray for the best.

  • Arson isn't natural. And it's known that some of these were set on purpose.

  • i just found that out myself just a little while ago so i didn't know sorry

  • Larry Himmel is just one of the hundreds of thousands of victims in the fires in San Diego... it is just devastating that the fires covered a lot from Los Angeles to San Diego, and it is horrible.

Let's stop talking about the effects of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and focus on the devastation sixteen (16) fires can bring to hundreds of thousands of people. Lives are also at risk in here, as so in the wars of Iraq and Afghanistan.

  • Mickeystown, why don't you take this shit somewhere else? Create your own video expressing your views so that there is a forum for people who actually care to read or respond to your opinions. You are that annoying person who butts-in on a conversation that has nothing to do with you. GO THE FUCK AWAY!!!!!!!!

  • I hope that the current SoCal fires will end soon... may God Bless South California and let the people recover from the mess the fire created. Let everyone of us pray that the people involved in the fire, from the firefighters to the families involved, will always be safe no matter how intense the fire may be.

  • Mickeystown, God may be against Iraq but definately not Afghanistan. Those fuckers deserved it. We should have just nuked the whole fucking country.

  • nature´s payback time

  • Mickeystown, You are wrong. God wants the USA to invade every country in the Middle East because they don't believe in Jesus. God wants us to kill as many of those towelheads as possible. God will reward everyone in the USA with 70 virgins.

  • Damn. Gotta suck.

  • I hope all of California BURNS. This is God's retribution to California for being a bunch of Crazy Liberal Wacko Democrates who elected Pelosi and Boxer into office. May you all burn in hell

  • You probably never passed kindergarten.

  • hey fuck you asshole. were not all democrats here you peice of shit. and even so, those are people homes that are being destroyed, i hope your house burns down, and you die and burn in hell after, you intollerant asshole

  • Wildbucky, Only Democrats houses should burn. If you are Republican, than GOD is on your side.

  • wow that sux, a lot of homes destroyed to to the dry arid winds

  • You mean the US government

  • dat suckz

  • sucks

    "

Several years ago when we were in Arizona I asked our guide why dead brush and diseased trees weren't being removed. He told us that environmental regulations prevented that--they don't want to encourage anymore home sprawl into the mountains and canyons. "Sure looks like a fire hazard," I said. "Exactly," he said.

    "

    -- Collecting my Thoughts (blog)

Where Americans see growth and prosperity, Leftists see "sprawl". Liberalism is pernicious.

  • people make jokes about these fires to cover up their deep rooted insecurities because of their lifes failures. they're just bitter people with little hope and therefore, find joy when successful people meet tragedy. THANK GOD FOR INSURANCE, right Larry? ignore these idiots, their comments show their ignorance and obvious unsuccess in life!

  • miyoshi82

There have been several reports of arson in several different places between san diego

and santa barbara. Al Qaeda would be a prime suspect, based on their stated desires to destroy the Great Satan.

  • So far I found one article where some dumb Al Qaeda who is currently in Gitmo confessed about several men starting fires in the midwest. Don't know if it's credible or not.

  • Even if the report of the confession is reliable, "information" obtained under torture is never reliable.

  • omg, i can't believe he had to report on his own burning home.

  • AHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAH

  • I feel bad for these folks losing their homes and possessions. Can you imagine something like this hitting your home and family and losing everything in the blink of an eye? It's probably similar to how the Iraqi's feel when firebombs fall from the sky on THEIR houses. Just like the folks in CA, they did not bring such a fate on themselves. They are innocent victims.
