soooo I was there the night in question at the Blind Pig. The reviewer is not exactly the most intuitive person in the rowboat... there's zero chance Dan was serious about being angry with the guy or kicking him out. He is, like most singer/songwriters, always teetering on the edge during a performance... self-doubt butting against bravado. The guy was just a little trippin and had a weird reaction at a point of the night where Dan was looking to get his footing.
The reviewer is kind of clueless, as demonstrated by the review's lack of understanding about the use of icons as metaphor/mythology... which is actually a quite brilliant and concise way to get your point across in 3 and a half minutes.
Anyway. Dan's been known to ride the mood swing rollercoaster... but he's one of the sweetest and most sincere humans you'll ever meet and for some lamebrain to take some clueless person's convoluted analysis and turn it into hatred for the guy... that's lame in the first degree.
Dan Bern fans! Catch Dan Bern’s appearance on Dave’s Gone By, Sat, noon-3pm(ET) 3/12/11 on UNC Radio (uncradio. c0m). He’ll chat about music, religion, touring, his family and more. If you miss the show, hear it in the archives at davesgoneby. c0m.
Dan Bern is awesome. I haven't read all the bickering going on, but in Dan's defense I saw him live a few years back and he was such a cool guy. After the show he did photos, drinks, and had real convos with practically everyone who attended. Closed down the bar with us. Rare to see an artist be so friendly with their fans.
Different faces for different crowds, man. And I wouldn't begin to call my stance "uneduated," for it most certainly is "educated" in the sense that I've heard multiple reports concerning this guy and most were negative, including one particularly bad one . Hey might be a saint, the most cordial of all musicians, to most, but he has acted like an "ass" to some others. And I'll concede that at first glance it seems like a rude comment, but I trust my sources enough to post.
@MrZuss I have met Dan on more than one occassion at his shows and he has NEVER been anything but nice and cordial. Perhaps you shouldn't believe everything you hear, or better yet, get out there and live it instead of just hearing about it. And leave your unexplored opinions at home. I don't understand posting such a rude comment from such an uneducated stance. You haven't even met the man yet are so quick to spread the word he's an ass?? You could not be more wrong!!
@MrZuss How can someone look like "a real ass"? That's like saying that someone looks adopted. Whether he's an ass or not is irrelevant--I've never met him and wouldn't know. The issue is your reasoning or lack thereof.
@GeneralStiffness Hardly. That's a very poor analogy to say the least, for one can most certainly look like a "real ass." I'm basing thissuperficial opinion on his antics and demeanor in this video (e.g. gyrating against a dryer, wearing shirtless t's, lots of close-ups, self-congratulatory smugness over the song's lame pun.) See Also: the entire video for "I'm not the Guy." Please explain my lack of reasoning in this or any of my posts...your response seems to lack any real purpose.
@MrZuss I honestly do'nt understand why you are commenting on Dan Bern's videos if you're so against him. You heard he was an ass and decided to look him up and say he looks like one? Are you twelve? Do you honestly have nothing better going on in your life? You claim he's an ass because of close-up shots? Do you know nothing of making music videos? Because Dan sure as hell isn't directing it. He's a musician who for many years has struggled to make it and finally has achieved a following.
@Shintiko Hah I enjoy getting arise from folks on youtube cause I'm just a puerile college student who goads fanboys into fights, right? Maybe half. And commenting here doesn't take but 5 minutes, so that's classic comeback doesn't hold water. And if I had that kind of music video made, I would ask the director to not make it so kitsch. But who am I to even begin to comment on things above me head. Hah seriously I'll bow out gracefully and admit that I like Dan, just wish he were nicer at times.
@MrZuss Also because Dan Bern once told a fan to "get the fuck out," that does not make him an ass. I have seen musicians do far worse. People pay money to see Dan play and if someone is going to interrupt the show, I wouldn't be surprised if they are thrown out. I've had concerts nearly ruined for me due to obnoxious people. The fact that you looked this event up after hearing he was an ass just makes me think you are trying to prove your point to dedicated fans who aren't going to listen.
@Shintiko Haha didn't take more than one wild google search of "Dan Bern Insults Fan" to turn that little link up. And laughing isn't really interrupting a show too terribly, doesn't warrant a "GTFO." And my point is that as a formerly(?) struggling musician, he ought to show a bit more grace and humility, especially towards other musicians and fans, both of which I have heard he has openly insulted/disrespected. He's a solid musician, but that doesn't diminish his capacity to be an "ass."

As someone who has personally met the guy, he is far from an ass. He can be sarcastic at times but he really is nice.
