Alright so how the fuck can i get these UI's in my games? I know absolutely nothing about editing files or anything. So brake it down to me someone please!
@cMARVEL360 Long story short. You can't. This is for game developers for use in new or in progress games. You can't just add this to an existing game unless you took it apart and rebuilt it. Sorry, but it's just not possible.
Hm so let me get this straight. Why are game developers using scaleform instead of just programming their own in-game UIs? What's so special with scaleform? I see it's flash but is there any performance gain here or is it just eye candy which you can make yourself without the use of scaleform? I'd cut down time yes, but is it really worth the cost compared to creating your own UI?
@vikocho123 It's a good preset, don't get me wrong. I'm a programmer myself and I don't see the problem of creating something similar from scratch, the question still remains though, since it would take extra time doing this from scratch, maybe it would be more cost effective using scaleform? I don't know though, I can't seem to find any prices of what scaleform costs (free with unreal engine 3 though!) but it wouldn't surprise me if it would have been expensive!
@icebice You can roll your own UI solution sure. But it would take a junior engineer a good year to two years to build one that is comparable to Scaleform. Also, Scaleform provides a much faster implementation of Flash, because it is hardware accelerated on the GPU. And GFx 4.0's core architecture and renderer are multithreaded.
@scaleformpress The more important reason (in my opinion) is that most interface designers/artists already know Flash, and so don't have to retrain. Have you ever tried to teach a designer how to use new software*? Down that path lies only pain. No, trust me, my friend, Scaleform is the superior solution.
*PS - I am a designer, so I feel comfortable making this statement.

@scaleformpress No one is suggesting that you use flash UI's but that you make UI's natively and low level, and much faster to do by just making them the same way you'd make anything else in 3D.
@AnveenaMenethil Scaleform comes with UDK and UDK is free. If your developing a game on the Unreal Engine 3 using UDK, you can use Scaleform for all your UI in game.
@Maholain Also note that Flash has a free trial. Is most definitely not expensive even if you are a student. And there ARE free alternatives to flash (not as good as Flash but are available choices nonetheless).
@xXSythenXx It's free trial only lasts 30 days. It also costs $700 which is quite expensive, especially if you are just a hobbyist (which is one of the reasons why you might choose a mostly-free engine like UDK). Also, all other tools that do not have even close to Flash functionality are not officially supported by Scaleform.
@Maholain UDK is not built to be a one man show. If your looking to create a game yourself on your own without either extensive knowledge or extensive software, you'd be looking at Unity or another free game development environment. Yes it costs 700$ but the majority of users of UDK and/or Flash currently are students. And you can get that for under 100$ with a student ID.
@xXSythenXx Please tell me how Unity is more geared towards a one-man-show than UDK. All 3D games are hard to build with one person, period. Also, I am using UDK to create a game by myself anyways, and I do not find Unity any better suited for that task. Another thing - please back up your fact on how the majority of the users of UDK/Flash are students. I don't think that is true.
@Maholain Both in some form or another do require a team, but take a look at Unity's community. There are hundreds of thousands of people creating their own small games. UDK games are either previous Unreal Tournament Mods, or entire teams developing games. I too am creating a game myself through UDK and I really do not see the point of this argument, I'm simply stating that practically everyone can find a version of Flash one way or another.
Here in Ireland 70% of all colleges have switched from Crytek and Source to UDK and with that the colleges recognize the needs of their students and supply them with discounted versions of the game industry standard software. I'm not saying that every UDK user is a flash user or a student. Rather I'm saying that if you think about the amount of people in Computer Game Development. How many of them have some kind of multimedia or computer based background? Quite a lot of them.
@xXSythenXx Be it programming, or texture development, or 3D modeling. There is always someone who is willing to join a team, with that level of skill needed to develop that indie game in question. So the likelihood of one member of any one team having Flash is quite high,
@xXSythenXx What does a computer based background have anything to do with using UDK? You are discounting a large number of indies and hobbyists who use UDK due to the low cost of entry. Schools have access to a wide variety of engines that may cost several thousand in an industry setting.
I am most definitely not discounting a large number of indie and hobbyists who use it. They are precisely the people I am talking about. Most UDK users (Indie and Hobbyists) either form in teams or know someone (possibly even themselves) who have a multimedia background. In all fairness, you are not going to get far in UDK if you have never even opened up paint or know anything about game design.
@xXSythenXx Flash isn't the only software that you would require to use UDK.
Yes you can use Blender for 3D, but this brings us back to the same thing.
Blender is free, but the ideal would be Maya, XSI or 3Ds Max. But those too cost money.
There are always free alternatives, they're just not as good as the retail - and if you want to use UDK to it's fullest extent, you're probably going to have to invest in some software.
@xXSythenXx Sure if designing a Flash menu is really that hard, you can get the web designer of your indie team's website to make one up.
The point is, it's always possible one way _or another_ to get software. UDK would have switched to Scaleform anyway, because they would have done extensive research into how many of their users would prefer Scaleform than UIScenes.
@xXSythenXx A company as big as Epic Games with this large of a fanbase would not have just made an off hand decision. Their users want Scaleform. Their users want Flash.
@xXSythenXx Please explain to me how 3ds Max or Maya is better than Blender, other than the fact that more people use it. UIScenes can still be enabled. Scaleform was chosen because it is more powerful than UIScenes- however, this comes at a cost of higher entry. I want Scaleform. I want Flash. I want the world. You don't always get what you want.
@Maholain Max and Maya are more user friendly. But it's in personal preference. and if UIScenes can still be enabled the why are we even debating about this?
Honestly, you really are lucky enough to even be getting the Unreal Engine 3 with UDK for free, let alone all the software needed.
I wish you the best of luck with your project, this debate is becoming both pointless and personal.
@xXSythenXx I do not know why we are still arguing about this. I'll have to agree with you that this debate is pointless. Thank you for wishing me luck on my project and I wish you luck in whatever you aim to do.
@lostinseganet I'm not sure I understand your question, but what I can tell you is that Scaleform has already been used in many AAA titles, including Batman Arkham Asylum, Mass Effect 1 & 2, Crackdown 2, Mod Nation Racers, DarkSiders, Starcraft 2, and many more. We're always improving the tech to make it more of a win for the devs. And while Flash does vector graphics really well, it is also capable of doing bitmap stuff too.
@SFCOmdoyle As games get more high def will the scalable ability of vector graphics make programmers more interested in using vector graphics? That is what I was wondering overall.
@lostinseganet Some have already begun to use vector graphics. I believe Crysis Warhead by Crytek used almost all vector graphics for the UI. That was Scaleform GFx as well.
I actually would prefer they dont force us to buy another software in order to create something cool!
This some kind of pissed me. Because I just learned handling UiScenes in mix with kismet. And then they remove functionalitys in kismet that was hardly needed in order to create interfaces. As example MIC:Settextureparameter.
Instead of outsourcing to other softwares they should make it easier and succesfull to create cool working interfaces with UDK. Kismet + Ui Scenes.
@Shmaitotem Scaleform is making a product that can work outside of the Unreal Engine. They mention it can be manipulated using C++ or gamescript, so this is cross-engine. Merely modifying the UDK (something that Unreal would charge them an arm and a leg to do) would lock them into selling an extension to Unreal - instead they have made a product that can be used in multiple instances and situations. Games or otherwise.
Also, flash costs what, $70? Compared to the Unreal License?
But what is bringing me into trouble is that epic remove older well working functionality in kismet. Im not a programmer (c++) im pretty handy with kismet but that gets actually limited/ neglected(I hope i picked the right term) by epic.
@Shmaitotem Last time I checked the UDK, I didn't see any real limitations in their Ui Scenes system - that is to say I do not believe they removed anything.
From what I've seen of Scaleform, the code is really not that hard - they are still trying to make it artist friendly. Games is where Artists and codes need to wear a little bit of both hats to make any headway - Kismet is awesome, but knowing your way around some C++ is very very helpful.
@Shmaitotem I don't use YouTube all that often, so I didn't think it was required to back up my credentials, and I don't see why arguing the other side of the coin should annoy you. Your original comment was a normative opinion about what they should do - a declarative statement of what must be done in your opinion. I am merely pointing out that your opinion is short-sighted.
You actually repeatedly defend this product that is ok.
And I understand your opinion and accept it.
I think thats Scaleform is a huge step and make a lot easier.
And my statement just relay on this facts:
One update before the newest Udk version including Scaleform was out
they removed the kismer function which allowed over kismet to switch textures(not materials) via kismet. Which allowed to set graphics within a Ui Scene to certain state.
@XFuncCaRteR if no ui's had gimmicks we'd be left with hl2's interface everywhere. Ui is part of the graphics and presentation of a game, it's silly to ignore making it look good. Wipeout HD's interface is slighty shifty when you boost or accelerate and it actually improves the experience of the game.
