"In some sense the most benevolent, generous person in the world seeks his own happiness in doing good to others, because he places his happiness in their good. His mind is so enlarged as to take them, as it were, into himself. Thus when they are happy, he feels it; he partakes with them, and is happy in their happiness. This is so far from being inconsistent with the freeness of beneficence, that, on the contrary, free benevolence and kindness consists in it." Jonathan Edwards
@notourown Did Jesus not? We are commanded in Hebrews 12:2 to look at Jesus as our example in experiencing suffering, and it states that it was "for the joy that was set before him" that Jesus was able to endure the cross. Jesus found His greatest happiness to see us reconciled to Him and to His Father because He loves us. :)
Also, regarding 1 Corinthians 13:4; Paul isn't saying that you should love out of a motivation for gain but simply stating that you won't gain anything without love. It's not about the gain, you aren't motivated by the gain. That's the whole point. IT'S NOT ABOUT WHAT YOU GAIN. love seeks not it's own.
Yes this is a contradiction. Christian Hedonism is Love motivated by selfish ambition. The gospel is Love motivated by love motivated by love motivated by love motivated by love etc....
God IS love. We love because He first loved us. It's not about seeking happiness, it's about dying to selfish ambition and being born again in love, love that seeks not it's own.
I love Piper and his ministries and I want what's best for Him. Please see the truth.
