Quick question: Is this form a personal arrangement of the Ba Xian Jian methods or is it an orthodox form? I have seen many arrangements of Ba Xian Jian. I was wondering if there was an orthodox form passed down by tradition. Nobody seems to be an authority on it. I would welcome some insight.
Just my opinion, we need to understand that Ba Xian means Eight immortal Souls or Gods which traditional chinese believe. Actually, they are coming from imagination fm chinese Novel.
The writer imagine 8 different characters inside.
Sooner or later, people imitated the characters and put them in MArt.
So, this is one of the reasons why I said it is an Art only.
No real Martist will dare to fight with enemies with something which came from only imagination!!!
but i think my real pride is terms of Tai Chi is the sword. I'll say there's like a bond... I think that's how we say it right? a bond between sword and wielder ...
@philipw2005 Thank you for sharing your perspective! I have been coming to the belief that there are many types of wudang Ba Xian jian, so there is no "official" 8 immortals form.
I agree it would be foolish to create a combat "art" totally from imagination. However taoist masters "have" been known for creating whole paintings in their mind, and then miraculously painting them out in one bit of time, without lifting their brush. Sort of makes me wonder!
FACT: the strait sword was used all over the east for centuries with deadly effectiveness.
FACT: it was the spear and the broadsword that was used in war.
FACT: even europeans used light weight swords in duels and for self defense.
oh and greek hoplites (spartans were a social class in ionia (greek city state) not a type of soldier) were great but they had almost no mobility. thats why they got their asses kick so many times.
Actually, the most wonderful weapon was from WuDong. That is the reason why WuDong Sword was called 'The God of All Short - Distance Weapons'.
So that, some people even chinese do not know the truth, and said Wudong Sword are not for real sparring or not for fighting against other weapons excluding Guns.
This 8 Immortal sword style is only an Art. Not for real killing or Combat...
Please do researching more, and If possible , please take a tour to WuDang Shan once in life-time.
SIX FOOT LONG! What kind of sword was this; jian, dao? Have *any* of these swords been found/ survived? My jian is about four foot long, but that includes the handle; I have personally modified mine. I would be interested in reading about this ancient wudang shan sword book. Can you share anything more about this topic?
Thank you for you time, I appreciate your efforts.
WuDang Shan was a place for chinese Emperor to pray for goodness.
There4, there wer Emperor's Soldiers around him. And the Soldiers were all top MArtists with Long weapons- esp. our Chinese Spear.
Do you think the taoists inside WuDong Shan would not think about how to fight against these soldiers?
Fm my views, this's one of the reasons why Real WuDang Sword is a long sword at least as long as a ch. spear. However, long Sw was improved better than Spe in fighting
wudangshan was used by the taoists for martial art instruction much like it is today. the teachers there were martial arts masters who took refuge there or to atone of a life time of killing not taoist monks. to be a taoist monk means to rennounce the world and its madness. the taoist sects resided on huashan's 5 peaks. that is the birthplace of taoism-not wudanshan-in fact wudangshan is where most of the warrior class nobility sent their children to study before the sino-japanese war.
I have a question to you people out there: do you know if wu-dang traditional practitioners engage in sparring with the weapon techniques? Do they participate in full contact sparring? What about the Shaolin monks. This is not a veiled diss or anything I am genuinely interested in knowing. I have nothing but respect for the asian martial arts.
i'm not really sure... coz buddhist don't believe in killing so that's probably why it doesn't kill. If you see the Wudang Clan's (I think it's called clan) weapons, they are all totally different
i'm not sure if I'm correct but Taoist believe in killing to save others whereas shaolin monks don't believe in killing but in changing the person or something liddat
No matter Taoist or Buddhist Monk, they do not prefer killing.
Real Taoist believes the United of the Nature, the united of the universe and becoming ONE with them. The mixtures of Sky, Human and Ground.
Real Shaolin Monk believes in "San" fm Buddhist. It is the empty of yourselves, empty the nature and empty the universe. This will lead your mind in a state of totally looking deep or insight everything and everybody in the world. And owning eternal happiness forever.
No matter what the styles are Wudang Sword, Clan, Spear, or even something we have not seem, they are all - ART- nowadays. And it is not for real combat or fighting skills in ancient wartime anymore.
A person still has great advantages with long weapon/s on hand/s when he need to act against his enemies. This is common-sense indeed.

"Dao" itself is vague and hard to grasp, impossible to intepret. The daoist philosophy stresses on obeying natural order. In that matter, the last thing a true daoist would do is to strive to prevent a dying art from dying, because if it is to die than it is meant to die. If it has life and hope in it, than there are no need to strive to make it lively or hopeful. Re yr quick question - U can even put yrs in the Ba Xian Arrangement as it is only an Art !!

You are the form.
Best MArt is something which is developing with the world fm time to time or even breakthrough of present.

And, most of the Tao Temples inside the mountain were built by one of the past Chinese Emperor.

Real WuDang Sword was Long Sword which was over 6 feet long that stated in Anient WuDong Sword Book.
For real fighting conditions especially talking about Anient Wars in China, only two kinds of weapons were usually used in Troops.
Long Chinese Spear - (The King of All Short-Distance Weapons) ;
Long Chinese Knife - (Terminate Horse Knife).
These two are long weapons.

Hi Syphen888
My sword at home is around 5 feet long with 1 foot long handle and 4 feet long blade. However, it is still not up to standard and not light enough !!!
The ancient WuDang Shan Sword Book is an introduction of Sword structure and the most basic fighting methods.
It indicates the dreaming MArt's level for a swordman.
But, there are too many concepts which is outdated fm my point of views. Ofcourse, it is old knowledges.

Sword stabbing,
Sword blocking,
Sword Circle,
Sword Lifting
WuDang 4 Swords is the mother of all the sword's development.
All different WuDang Sword styles and movements are based on these mainly.

Hi Meshelsidek
You asked a good question.
Shaolin Pole methods is famous in china in this thousands year.
WuDang Sword is famous in China also.
In Chinese Words:
Southern Shaolin ; Northern Wudong.
However, the Wudong Sword today is not for real fighting even they are sparring with each other in practicing.
Real Wudong Sword is Long Sword, and it is as long as a Chinese Spear.
But, the Strength and Killing techniques are much more flexible than All others weapons.

Havn't you enjoy the movie 300 Spartians?
They were all using Long Spear with One Shield. However, they are almost invincible.
If using Combat Tactics, the Spears and Shields were totally invincible.
This is as same as Long Sword in basic.
What you are watching in Youtube about WuDang Sword styles is only a show. They are all unrealistic.
Just imagine when taking a real ' alive or death' fight with Long Spear, the Swordman only have holes on the body, and lose precious life.

Shaolin Pole is wonderful, but it can not take one's life by just one hit.
Do You agree ?
Even, WingChun 6 1/2 Pole's methods are fm Shaolin.
The methods are simple pure and powerful.
Almost No MArtist with weapons can get near.
So that, No matter Asian or European or even others countries knew exactly what was the real things in real Wars.

It should depend on what kinds of weapons One is using.
Using Long weapons or Bow and Arrows, it can !
Using short weapons, it can not.

Not including sudden attack from the back.

Hi Plovakia
I can sure U that Buddhist do not kill.
However, as an MArtist, the belief of truth includes Killing and Saving both.
Once we know killing, we will perceive the value of saving people, the true value of life.
Thats why we should have deep thinking, real heart learning on Buddhist, this is just one side.
Learning Devil is on the other side.
So, we can somewhat like 'dissolving within the Universe' ; ' to be One'.
