  • @misterdeity & Mrs. Deity: well done. that was far and away the sanest critique of that silly little drama- and more importantly, funny.

  • 4:26-4:36

    XD

    I lost it.

  • Lucy; you are gorgeous!

  • I love ANY episode with Lucy, and especially enjoyed your reference to Rebecca Watson's Dublin elevator story! 100% Pure Awesome.

  • Effin Hilarious. As always.

  • Judging by the number of dislikes, I'd say Watson, Plait and their entire posse have dropped by.

  • HolyBookPro.. lmao. That's great!

  • I love Lucy!!

  • ...does that say HolyBook Pro? Yes, yes it does. Equipped with divine definition, surround sound, and omniscience. Hell yeah!

  • "Peter Sellers did three roles in Strangelove."

"Sir, you're already doing three roles."

    HA!

  • Fuckin hate when people chew gum while talking to you XD

  • hahaha HolyBook Pro, nice

  • Elevatorgate!!!!!!!!!! Bet sceptchik just dropped off Mr. Deity's subscriber list!

  • This is great. Hilarious!

    2 Questions:

1: What are you chewing during the end? If you are not actually chewing anything, it's even funnier.

2: Are you going to do another "words" season?

  • If god or gods were aliens after all, then "Mr. Deity" makes so much more sense! Really, there is no scriptural evidence for god to be omni-..., creator of the Universe and such like. He appears to be humanoid and even looks like Esau (see Gen. 33-10 and 32-30). This fact would put such "god" in the same category of being as us. Therefore he really was a deity.

  • I'm sorry, but no. Puppies are not acceptable. Kittens, maybe. Ponies, better. Centaur babies is more appropriate. I think the hoof's are understated.

    Which reminds me...

Are satyr's midget versions of centaurs?

  • God knows about Elevatorgate =)

  • none of this make any fucking since, all those movies are made before the cosmos was created or whatever. Good commandy should makr since or agrust anything out of the normal. they should atlease made up a funny explaintion of why he knows are those movies which all take place in a time or place in the future.

they could have made a good god is all knowing joke out there

  • @abarrathemaster Well, first, Mr. Deity is outside time. So, temporal sequences have no meaning. But you're also assuming that He's talking about the creation of our universe. Could be some parallel universe. Too many assumptions.

  • @misterdeity now where in the sires dose it suguest that he created other unverses?

  • @abarrathemaster I thought "in god" all things are possible. Read that in some book or reinterpreted collection of pamphlets or something or other. Or maybe those were the Lucytanic unverses...

  • @misterdeity "Here's why we're different than the religious. At the end of the day, we're a principled people who have great respect for dissent & we value diversity of opinion"

    Oh? Coulda fooled me, big-shooter.

If ever 'cooler heads prevail' & you want to try overgeneralizing 80% of the USA, explaining why Iowa (82%religious) has gay marriage, whereas Cali (62%) hasn't, or refuting any of my other 'dissents', just reply.

I gotta tell ya, I really enjoyed our correspondence!

  • @festdir Ha! Good one! But I'm not falling for it again. I'm a fan of absurdist humor too. I'm on to you. Next, you'll be telling me that the religious are against school prayer, creationism in schools, sodomy laws, and that the Pope is a big supporter of condom use. You're hysterical! But I'm on to you. Thanks again. You gave me a good laugh!

  • @misterdeity Keep in mind 80% of the US self-identifies as religious....

"School prayer" Only 23% of the US thinks spoken prayer should be in school (Gallup '05)

"creationism" 43% think intelligent design should be taught in school (Gallup '05)

"sodomy laws" The ELCA (the largest Lutheran denomination in the US) ORDAINS GAYS AS CLERGY. Iowa (82% religious) legalized gay marriage. Cali (62%) hasn't?

"Pope/condom use" Correct. See how easy it is to be correct when you don't generalize?

  • @festdir Caught again. If you weren't goofin', why would you post these stats that scare me to death? Holy crap!!! 43% want creationism -- that's batshit crazy! I had no idea it was that high. And 23% percent of the 80% want prayer in school?!!! That's nearly 30% of the religious. OMG!!! That's how I know you're goofin'. Either that, or you don't live in America where we all know how much power this crazy, vocal minor holds. Again, the more you follow the book = batshit crazy. What a goofball!

  • @misterdeity Creationism is moronic.

However, their stupidity does not negate your own.

You are now judging ALL MEMBERS of a demographic, by the views held by a MINORITY of them.

Unless you are prepared to argue that '30%=100%' (won't surprise me by this point), your generalizing is inexcusably stupid.

It is not only biased & simplistic, it is irrationally & mathematically wrong.

    "crazy, vocal minor[ity]"

They are....You should really hang out with them more, it seems you share a lot in common.

  • @festdir Caught you again! No one who really feels as you say you do would want to be associated with so much juvenile name-calling. You're too smart to not be able to read this thread and see that I have never said anything about "100%" of anything. That's so funny, btw!!! Especially when you could just read and see that I've always been tattling about those who follow the book. "The more you follow the book = bats hit crazy." Only someone goofin' or trolling wouldn't see that. You're so funny!

  • @misterdeity "No one who feels as you would want to [use] juvenile name-calling"

    Nah, I'm cool with it.

    "never said '100%' of anything"

Yes. The fact that I have been calling you out for over-generalizing ALL Christians/religious, has nothing to do with it. (Hint: 'all'=100%)

"those who follow the book" Thanks for the example of the 'all/100%' I mentioned previously.

"more you follow the book= bats hit [sic..check your spellcheck next time] crazy"

In that case, what is your excuse?

  • @festdir Silly! Goofin' again? I know you're smart enough to understand the subtleties of language -- that those who follow the book more closely will be crazier than those who don't. Your pretending not to understand is hilarious though! But what should be really disturbing is that ANYONE is following a book which advocates genocide and the murder of homosexuals. Do you jokingly defend others who follow similar books? And are they fond of the color brown -- particularly for shirts?

  • @misterdeity "ANYONE is following a book which advocates genocide"

So my 80 yr old neighbor is planning a genocide while cooking for a bake sale? What a frightening & TOTALLY not batshit point.

    "murdering homosexuals"

That would explain why a majority of Catholics & Mainline Protestants support their right to marry. Marriage=murder, amirite?

    "brownshirts"

ZOMG!!!! NAZIS!!!! Nothing like using Godwin's Law to really hammer home such a reasonable point.

    Touche, worthy adversary.

  • @festdir Ha! You're too funny!

  • @misterdeity I love how you are dealing with this troll.

  • @festdir "That would explain why a majority of Catholics & Mainline Protestants support their right to marry. Marriage=murder, emirate?"

    Define majority?

  • @00D00 Pew Poll 10-6-2010

White Mainline Protestant-49% favor gay marriage, 38% oppose

    Catholic-46% favor, 42% oppose.

Technically, a plurality. And certainly not indicative of an all-encompassing block that wants to 'murder homosexuals' as 'misterdiety' suggested.

  • @abarrathemaster

If you are going to comment....please spell correctly! One looks unintelligent when one cannot spell or use proper grammar. FYI.

  • it would be a total break through to get Hitchens and or Dawkins on the show. Well Hitch could spend the time making out with Lucy, and Dawkins can make Mr Deity look like a fool... not that he would have a hard time doing it. what do you think

  • Did anybody else see an ad for the mormon church before the video?

  • Brimstone brew, hahahaha, that's good stuff.

  • I gotta say, the green is really working for Amy in the begging segment :-)

  • @ianmathwiz7 That's so true. I'm always telling her that green is her color -- and it really brings out her amazing green eyes. Jesus, now you've got me all excited that she's my wife! I rock!!!

  • @misterdeity Lol, thanks. I should hope that one is excited about marrying the person he/she's with, after all.

Green, and blue, as well. I remember she wore blue in a Season 3 episode, and that also worked pretty well for her.

Tell Amy I said "hi," by the way!

  • Hahaha. It's nice the ship is turning. Getting the message yet BECKY??? Are you working out your planned exploitation-for-personal-gain manoeuver may be backfiring on you yet BECKY???

  • More Lucy!

  • I'm happy he made fun of that idiot who thinks asking for coffee is sexual assault lol

  • @fcdog555 To be fair, I think Richard Dawkins' comment completely missed the point, but yeah, I agree that she completely blew it out of proportion in the first place.

  • @ianmathwiz7 I disagree. I don't think you can even say it was blown out of proportion based on the fact that what the guy said was not even close to sexist.

It would be like if I told a black person to be quiet, and he called me a racist.

    It doesn't make sense lol

  • Hooray! An ad tacked on the front! We're in business now, Brian! Your great show continues! I Luv Lucy!

  • "But there are, among men, those who purchase idle tales, without knowledge (or meaning), to mislead (men) from the Path of God and throw ridicule (on the Path): for such there will be a Humiliating Penalty. "

    The Quran 31:6

  • @momin8888 "An intelligent hell would be better than a stupid paradise" (Particularly one with 72 virgins).

    Victor Hugo 18:73

  • It is great :-). Well, I can thank Elevatorgate, since it brought me to you. Your videos are very funny!

  • Best begging segment ever. :D

  • Love your videos Mr. Diety. This is one of your best! I agree that Richard Dawkins should not be thrown under a bus for his opinion on this(especially considering his mega huge contribution to rational thinking and debunking of religious authority), but neither should Rebecca Watson. They both had what they said blown way out of proportion. They both also contribute greatly to the skeptical and atheist world view. Hopefully people will get that eventually.

  • @sixcats100 I'll add a big fat AMEN to that! No one warrants dismissal in this case. Perspective is everything!

  • I think I missed something. What's this schism?

  • Using apples to cover the apple logo? Clever girl.

  • I love the line "Sir, you're ALREADY playing 3 roles!"

  • Um... "gum?" Did I miss something?

"I can't think of anyone who has done more to fight that kind of thing."

    Robert Ingersoll?

  • @lazyperfectionist1 Bob's a good pick! I guess I was speaking of the living.

  • New(ish) data: CFI has posted the video of Watson’s talk at the Leadership Conference: “Rebecca Watson: The Religious Right vs. Every Woman on Earth…” Her intro addresses elevatorgate, at a time before Dawkins’ attack on her. From ~15:00+: “Since starting Skepchick, I’ve heard from a lot of women who don’t attend events like this… they’re scared because they know that you won’t stand up for them, and if they stand up for themselves, you’re going to laugh them back down.”

  • @8yankee Seriously? Who are these strong, feminist, freethinking women who are so "scared?" This, to me, is a far greater problem than a guy in an elevator asking a woman to coffee -- and I think that's what Richard saw in these comments too. No disrespect intended, but this is an infantilizing of women that I don't find the least bit healthy. Were Rosa Park or Billy Jean King "scared" and afraid people would "laugh." This is a far sadder state of affairs. Let's work on that instead!

  • @misterdeity Google "Shrodingers Rapist" if you'd like to know the answer to the question you proposed rhetorically. Also, I would suggest you actually listen to Ms Watson's talk (after about 14:50) to get what she really said not what that idiot quote mined with his liberal use of ellipses.

And I would bet Ms Parks and Ms King were shit -scared. Bravery is not the absence of fear, but doing what you need to do despite the fear.

  • @nickgorton Exactly! Ms. Parks was shit-scared because she was confronting real, systemic evil and injustice. These women are afraid of attending an event with well-educated men with a extremely (statistically) low propensity for violence. Just as Muslima was confronting real evil, and not a guy asking someone back to his room for coffee. That you just stubbornly refuse to get it, blows my mind.

  • @misterdeity So by that same reasoning, since LGBT people are routinely put to death under Sharia, I should just suck up the homophobic treatment I get in the US?

Or are you saying that racism and homophobia are real and systemic injustice but sexism isn't? What is your bar for defining what real injustice is? 1/6 women in the US are raped in their lifetimes. Far fewer fags get bashed or blacks get lynched (today). So what's the cut-off?

  • @nickgorton Do you see the lengths to which you have to go to equate this incident with real evil? You have to start talking rape to make your point in any way relevant. I'm saying sexism is a real problem, as are rape and sexual assault. But NO ONE was talking about actual sexism, and certainly not rape or sexual assault. They were talking about a guy asking a woman back to his room for coffee. That you think there is only one way to see that (sexism/assault) is simply ridiculous.

  • @misterdeity Ah, so if you don’t like my emotion, then it must manipulative. Interesting. And suggesting that Watson’s attempt to speak up actually harms (“infantilizing”) women? Now that’s a rhetorical twist worthy of Fox News. Brava.

You might also look up “A Letter to Richard Dawkins from Victims of Sexual Assault” for more examples of strong, freethinking women who have cogent reasons to be angry and worried about the backlash against Watson. I know the title will offend you, but be strong!

  • @8yankee Well, there you go again -- equating sexual assault with an invitation back to the room. And who's lashing out at RW? People differ on this -- some with sarcasm and mockery (that's probably the equivalent of sexual assault too -- heck what isn't if EG's invitation is).

No one I've talked to on this side of things is "offended." I'll leave the being offended and assaulted to you and your team -- especially since you're so good at it and can find reason for it anywhere. Hugs 'n' kisses!

  • @misterdeity The people who wrote that letter chose the title for themselves, not to please or annoy you or me. Respond to an argument from the actual letter if you want to be taken seriously. Or respond to some of the content of the previously suggested ‘Schrodinger’s Rapist’ blog post; it’s also chock full of reasonableness.

  • @8yankee I'm not going to respond to that because that letter is not what this is about. The RW/Dawkins incident is what this is about, and I've pretty much said everything I wanted to say. We'll just agree to disagree and hopefully you won't think I'm some evil jackass who just "doesn't get it." I will give you the benefit of the doubt as well.

  • @misterdeity If you're still into defending Dawkins, that letter to Dawkins contains some seriously cogent explanations as to why both EG's behavior and Dawkins' words are problems.

Found another good blog for you to read: on Scientific American Blogs, "Is It Cold in Here?" by Jennifer Ouellette. In referring to material from the American Physical Society, she points out something that tops their list of concerns -- denial of the problem (or its seriousness) by authority figures.

  • @8yankee OMG! Are you serious? This whole thing is so last week. We're done with it, and cooler heads HAVE prevailed. You have to stop thinking that there's an absolute "right" and "wrong" here. You sound fundamentalist! People have differing opinions about this thing which don't make them "wrong" or "bad" or "unenlightened." It's a matter of opinion. That's what I've been defending -- not Richard, but the right of everyone to have their opinion (even a sarcastic one) without being written off.

  • @misterdeity Losing you was more brutally disappointing for me than losing Dawkins. He's always been pompous and reflexively nasty, but you presented as rather progressive - until gems like "it doesn't matter where it would rank for [RW]" and "strong women don't need to be protected." The shaming thing, you are doing it. For the people who'll be objectified at the next conference and the next, this will never be over until faux-progressives like you take a stand instead of hiding in "fairness."

  • @8yankee Forgive me for using this term, but this is the hysterical reactionary stuff I dislike. You haven't "lost" anyone. I just can't honestly look myself in the mirror and say that what EG did was "objectifying" or awful. Nor can I say that what Richard did was awful (Over the top? Yes. Awful and warranting his dismissal, absolutely not!). If that means you've lost me, then everyone is continually at risk with people like you. I'm in it for the long haul, not just 'till we hit a skid patch.

  • @misterdeity If you expect me to consider it a weakness to look for empathy in public figures that I support, you'll be waiting awhile. A woman had her literal words ignored by a man who stalked her into an elevator in order to talk her out of her wishes and into his. The woman calmly issues sound advice on that textbook creep behavior: don't do it, and make our community better. Dawkins' choice to join the resulting shame-the-witch mob was ignorant, inflammatory & harmful to the community.

  • @8yankee Again, hysterical, and unwarranted from the data (remember, we only have her description of the event and how it went down). But I'm absolutely certain you don't care about that. You've invested way too much emotion in this to ever hear or care about the other side. That's not really the modus operandi of a good Skepchick -- a good activist? Absolutely! But I will continue along the calm, reasoned path of the Skeptic while you take this fork in the road. Best wishes.

  • @8yankee why are you defending someone who intentionally blew up what was merely an uncomfortable moment into an atheist/skeptic issue?

RW was fine saying she was uncomfortable with the situation and leaving it at that, but instead she cried louder and louder until she made everyone else felt uncomfortable.

  • @misterdeity I'll try signing off with a quote from one of the many fine commentaries that you falsely think you're too good to have to read or listen to. (But I place little faith in your ability to refrain from attacking women again, trying to protect your fragile, thin-skinned male privilege.) It's from Jennifer Oulette's Scientific American blog post of 20 July 2011, Is It Cold in Here?:

  • @misterdeity J Ouelette QFT: “Here is the message being sent to the women skeptics and atheists say they want to join their ranks: “If an atheist/skeptic man behaves boorishly toward you, or refuses to respect your boundaries, whether social or sexual, and you have the gall to state firmly that this is not okay, you will be publicly pilloried, ridiculed for being hysterical, called a man-hating feminazi (or worse), and have your concerns belittled and dismissed.”" She's got your number, dude.

  • @8yankee Or, if you politely ask a woman back to your room and politely accept her refusal, doing absolutely no harm to her person or property, you will be publicly pilloried as a boorish, misogynist pig. Worse yet, your particular behavior in this particular incident will be hysterically generalized to fit all similar situations with all women. And if you disagree, you will pilloried even worse, despite any and all grand contributions you've made to the movement. Next time, think for yourself.

  • Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you! This was a perfect response. I laughed all the way through. Love it!

  • I didn't get why larry was upset.

  • The camera work in the begging segment reminds me of Woody Allen's "Midsummer Night Sex Comedy" where characters are conversing with characters who are out of shot (or both characters are out of shot.) I've always liked that sort of "choreography"... nicely done you guys!

  • “We value diversity of opinion.”

Speak for yourself. Some atheists are homophobic. As a gay man, I don't value that opinion. Nor do I value misogyny. Or racism. Or people who are completely enfranchised denigrating others' experiences of sexism, racism, homophobia, ableism, transphobia, etc.

Dawkins could end this & regain the respect he lost & shine light on the problems in the predominantly straight white male atheist community by 3 simple words: I am sorry. Then he'll get my respect back.

  • @nickgorton wait, what happened? What did Dawkins do? :( I'm going to have to do some research... :o

  • @emikochan13 Google ElevatorGate.

  • @nickgorton You said it.

(Or do we have a cool, atheist equivalent yet for ‘Amen, brother’?) :)

  • Is Larry Metatron? Or one of the El angels? Or what?

  • I thought this one was pretty good. But now, after looking through the comments, it appears I missed most of the jokes.

  • "Now...had she been chewing gum.....?"....Bah ha ha. Dawkins would probably love this, I'd guess. Nice vid.

  • best mr. deity ever

  • Lucy is kinda hot ....

  • Hey .... "I can be a great villain" hahahahahahahahaha

  • The latest Jesus & Mo has weighed in on this now as well. You know you're in the right when the comedians are on your side. So, while we're "just not getting it" we are able to have a laugh along the way!

  • @Slossius1983 "You know you're in the right when the comedians are on your side."

Yes, so, like Dane Cook puts it, after you die and become a tree, I hope they print the Bible on you! ...You know, 'cuz comedians being against you must be an indication you are on the wrong side.

Sorry, that's what goes through my brain after reading perhaps the worst argument from authority I've ever seen followed by a hard facepalm.

  • @TheMidwestAtheist Yes you're right. What I was making was a serious argument based on the infallible authority of all comedians. You are right to not take any comments on a comedy video as being tongue-in-cheek or light-hearted. But you've disproven my claim! I have now disavowed my previously held conviction that one should adopt the comedians' view on any subject without thought. Of course, this means I'll have to alter the subject of my doctoral thesis...

  • I love Lucy Fur

  • lol "its like the mccarthy hearings" hahahahha

  • Comment removed

  • ONLY if you accept the framing of elevatorgate as a sexism issue can Dawkins' comments be construed as saying that we should ignore smaller incidences of sexism because there are larger ones in the world . They're purposely misunderstanding his point.

  • <3

  • great video

  • 5:54 iPhone email?

  • I would support your mocking of elevatorgate, but I'm just trying to keep a low profile until the tweeting dies down. Don't tell anyone I was here

  • I love the apple covering the "apple" logo

  • Lucy Fur Angel?

  • @misterdeity You mean Lucy is Lutheran, or Amy is Lutheran? Because the former is vaguely funny, but the latter is vaguely depressing.

  • The elevatorgate references did get me thinking about pickup lines I used to use. Two of my favorites: Buy her a drink and say, "Here, drink this till I'm cute." (Often backfired when they asked for the whole bottle). Or, "Let's skip the preliminaries. Wanna get married?" Only used that one once, as it worked a little too well. I'm now told I no longer have a need for pickup lines...

  • As an atheist and a skeptic, I'm a little bummed over having missed the whole elevatorgate thing. I feel so cheap. And not in a good way, either.

  • Sub +1 a touch of Woddy Allen in there :)

  • Coffee Fatwa! BubbleGum Fatwa! Elevator Fatwa... The FSM is displeased.

  • Great video!

  • Every video is pure genius. Of course I'm only saying that because, you know. Great minds...

  • Hi, BeefPies. This is funny: "Pretty soon, you might have to beg to finance the begging segments!"

Agreed. This was outstanding. All of it. I just watched it for the second time.

  • thats a good one

  • {platonic hugs}

  • Did anybody else notice that he is using a "Holybook Pro" computer? I laughed my ass off when I realized, that is some good stuff.

  • I like the omnipresence running gag.

  • Was that product placement? >.>

  • ahehehe ... delicious

  • Another winner! Good stuff as always, and as most people have said, that was probably the best begging segment yet. Of course, it's never a problem seeing Amy show up! (And since she's religious, a damn good sport for taking part in all this! I hope no one gives her trouble for being in them.) Last episode's beg was pretty good, too, though. Pretty soon, you might have to beg to finance the begging segments! Thanks again!

  • You'll never be able to top that begging segment! So, layered. Thanks and good luck.

  • *I* love When Harry Met Sally tyvm and best begging segment you've ever done.

  • *I* love When Harry Met Sally tyvm

  • Your beard and hair weren't white? Peroxide-ed-?

  • The "Religion or Peace" T-Shirt... obvious product placement. The mixed nuts and yogurt.... a little more subtle. And the mention of "Jesus" rather than "Cheese and Rice"? It felt like an even subtler endorsement.

  • Brilliant, for those who know about elevatorgate, at least. I guess those who don't will be a bit miffed...

  • @AntiMonopoly re the nuts reference: it's the same as the old joke about how to tell a boy Hershey bar from a girl Hershey bar - - the boy candy bars have nuts!

If anyone is still missing the reference, being a little more plain spoken, nuts are slang for testicles.

  • As I was saying, in spite of being taught to be scared, most of us grow up and get over it. We aren't so humorless and full of ourselves that we consider a guy hitting on us to be a potential sexual assault. I also don't get what Dawkins said that was so horrible? The trouble with the woman in question seems to be that she feels that unless you're a misandrist, you're a misogynist. Now that said, can someone explain the nuts reference to me? That went right over my head.

  • @AntiMonopoly Did you watch the talk that started it all? No one was calling for misandry.

  • Let me start by saying I'm a woman and I'm a feminist. I think this was fantastic, one of the funniest episodes ever. I so can't get behind the entire Elevatorgate thing. Yeah, it's creepy when you're drunk and a guy tries to get you into his hotel room. But as with any other normal guy, he took no for an answer, making this a non-issue. Granted, we grow up as girls hearing, don't get into elevators with strangers, etc. We are taught fright from an early age. *sigh* Character limit...

  • lol the apples in front of the laptop was a clever idea.

  • Mr. Deity, how can you make light of a OMG POTENTIAL SEXUAL ASSAULT OMG!!!?

  • Loved the video. And loved your response to "elevetorgate" even more. Bottom line, Dawkins was right... Poor kid got up the courage to ask the girl up for coffee (note, no one mentioned sex) and she said no. It should have been left at that. There was absolutely no reason for anyone to be offended.

  • Sometimes cooler heads will prevail only after they are rolling around on the ground"

    Too true!

  • For the first time I re wound and re- watched the begging segment. Brilliant :)

  • Ohhh man, a shout out to elevatorgate!

  • Very clever digs throughout. Well done!

  • God there are so many references to this elevator thing I pick new ones everytime.

  • You can skip this comment in 0:05

  • LMAO - someone is off the calendar now.... You came to kick ass and chew gum, but your out of gum....

  • LMFAO, "Not like your in an elevator"

  • great video

  • I have such a crush on Amy!!!

First and last time I"ll ever say so. "Muslimah", just too funny,

  • Well, now that the atheists, skeptics, and feminists have all gone tip-toeing off into the tulips, I guess the only rational voices left in the room are Comedians and Ceiling-Cat.

  • And the best part? "Hi, I'm muslima." I was nearly choking in my laughter.

  • Most feminist, are no better than misogynists. Having approached several of them over the years I find that if a man does not go out of his way to submit himself, and thereby degrade himself, to a feminist then said feminist takes offense that a man would dare to approach her. She is trying to use an incident to propagate her own self-righteous ideals (i.e. Ann Coulter).

On the one hand I understand why they addressed it, but on the other this is the first show I've not been able to enjoy.

  • @Santo3x7 As a male feminist dating a female feminist, your understanding of feminism includes only the most radical of the "radical feminists" (as sociologists name them).

Personally, I don't want a woman to take care of me, I don't want a woman to order around. I'm looking for an equal partner with an equal share in decision making and the like. We can specialize, certainly, but we'll know and discuss and decide (together) why we're doing it that way. I'm a male feminist, I hardly "submit".

  • @borrofburi As a male helicopter keeping my helicopter in a helicopter, I'm often asked what the hell I mean by the word "helicopter"... :)) Seriosly, mate, your description of a "non-radical male feminist" sounds like what I would call a "normal XXIst century guy just like me and most of those that I personally know". Call me a radical non-misanthrope, but I think that most men are good people who do respect and like women, without any -isms, just like most women like and respect men.

  • @dobrovol Except that the glass ceiling and other disparities (known as "institutional sexism", but should really be "unintentional but consistent disadvantage of a segment (women) of the population") still exist; they could use a lot of mending.

There's a multitude of biases about women we have that we don't even think about. Here's one for fun: it's ok for a woman to act "like a guy", but really awful for a guy to act "like a woman". That's because it's ok to be a guy, but less ok to be a gal

  • @borrofburi Sure, I agree. I think, the problem with any old movement with loosely defined goals, such as feminism, is that different people mean different things by it. Including feminists themselves: some help women in need (which is good), some rationalize their dislike of men (which is Freudian). Sort of like "humanism", which is a movement of bright good people who like people & progress - as opposed to the dumb evil rest of us, who like regress & little pink worms from the planet Zinn. ))

  • @misterdeity Well, I guess to a certain extent I'd agree that she was generalizing. However, what Dawkins seems to be doing is telling somebody who stubbed a toe not to say "ouch, avoid doing that in the future" because somewhere in the world somebody stepped on a landmine.

  • @CoreyChamb Not to put words in Dawkins' mouth, but I believe his point was nothing of the kind. If you take both of his replies together, it's clear that he thinks it was a non-event. Polite words were exchanged, and that's it. There is no evidence of sexism, misogyny, or any kind of threatening/ulterior intent in the part of the man. His point is that talking about it is like going on about seeing a cockroach in your bathroom instead of talking about poverty or something actually important.

  • @PBDPBD , I think you explained it well.

  • @PBDPBD And the response has consistently been that it's hard for us guys to understand the threat of rape that women have to reason about every day. There's simply no need to proposition someone (smaller and weaker, of a gender that experiences the vast majority of all rape) for sex in a confined area like that. Yes, it's not the end of the world if you're polite, just as stepping (hard) on my foot is hardly the end of the world. Yet it's probably better if you do neither.

  • @borrofburi I understand how she might have felt uneasy or even scared. However, it is sexist to categorically say that ALL females would, or that NO male should do that. assuming that the female is this frail, weak, scared little daisy while the man is a strong brute who is so practiced at raping that he can rape or assault someone in 12 seconds is sexist. I'm a guy, and I know tons of women who could kick my sorry ass and wipe the floor with me.

  • @borrofburi Some people might feel scared if a black kid with saggy pants and tattoos all over his body gets on an elevator with them. I think it is perfectly rational to be more frightened when they get on than when a man in a tux gets on. However, that doesn't mean we should categorically tell people that nobody wearing saggy pants should use elevators or that everyone is scared when they do. People. don't have the right to not be scared just like people don't have the right to not be offended

  • Come on, do you REALLY find it funny that some guy asking out some woman in a hotel can lead to so much anger and mudslinging? Yeah, me too, I think it's hilarious. Seriously, while, as a theist, I don't completely agree with everything that Dawkins says (yes, I tried to put it nicely), I think that the elevator scandal is totally ridiculous. If those angry feminists - Science forbid - stop reading Dawkins after this, we angry theists will just have to compensate by reading him more. )))

  • @dobrovol Can you point me to those angry feminists? Because all I'm seeing is calm, nuanced, and proportionate response.

  • @borrofburi Certainly NOT - why would I point a nice person like you to someone angry? :)) Seriously, "no, thank you, I'm not interested" on that fateful elevator of doom & horrors was a proportionate response. Everything else - from all sides - was really not.

  • haa

  • FUCK! YES! I knew I wasn't the only one that held that opinion.

  • "I'm Muslima!" (omigod ... that's too funny)

  • 16 people were named Rebecca Watson.

  • I wasn't aware of what happened until I saw this the first time. The second veiwing made much more sense. Mr. Diety, do whats right, ignore the dogmatic autonomic reactions (, and overreactions,) of an over-vocal minority of the activism for activisms-sake crowd. I'm sure your head will remain secure in it's proper place.

  • Love.

  • brilliant. time to donate again!

  • Meh.

  • I just have to say... I love Lucy! ;)
