  • I have given two of these knives as gifts to people who didn't carry a knife before I gave it to them. One is TiNi half serrated blade and the other stainless with no serration and they both carry them every day, every night and one of them is part owner of a very small flooring company while the other one is Vice-President of a company partenered with Merril Lynch (sorry about spelling, I have been drinking). Knife is a boss. Knife is the balls. Get one.

  • As usual, an outstanding, detail oriented, subjective review. I appreciate your continued effort to provide the "regular Joe" with the sort of straightforward, practical insight that has proven to be such a trustworthy "go to" reference when researching the bewildering number of product offerings available these days. You're indeed a breath of fresh air compared to the majority of blatantly prejudiced/ad influenced commercial rags available today. Kaizen sir. - Taylor

  • I just got the newer, second generation flash 2 with serrated blade. The difference is mine has a slightly different grip and a different locking lever!

  • Hey Nutn..dude just have to say u are becoming my favorite youtuber. and im 15 and love video game youtubers :)...Christmas just came and i asked for the Flash II...i got it!and i love it...all of things u were saying needed to be changed were!!!!...love your vids man keep it up

  • Nutn, why don't you design knives for someone? i would love to get a hold of something you designed because i'm sure you would design the perfect knife! go make a knife for benchmade/sog/spyderco etc.. lol seriously! thanks for the vids!

  • I have had absolutely no problem with the blade unlocking and folding up, even when thrusting into the heavy bones, such as thigh bone and even cranium. The handle is a delight to hold, and there is never a problem with slipping, even when the handle is wet. This is a great knife, very good for heavy use, and holds an edge even when cutting through bone. I would buy this knife again.

  • @kdpopcorna wtf are you doing

  • Hey im left handed does anyone know if there is any problems using this knife with left hand thank you

  • Love this knife. It's my go-to EDC primarily because of the blade size/shape, light weight and what has to be the best pocket clip in the business. Did I mention that I love this knife?

  • I've been using this knife daily in a warehouse environment and it has never failed, my only fault is that the blade doesn't retain it's sharpness. That being said, it is used in an industrial environment.

  • "by the way, SOG, start blackening those."

Love it. Just running their show.

  • Love it!

  • Why does the blade have Flash-1 on it, and also, why doesn't the knife have the arc locks that all Flash II's have ? Did the Flash-II originally have a straight plunger lock, then get upgraded to the arc lock?

  • @SPIKEwillKILL yes it at first had the straight lock and then changed it to the arc lock.

  • I really want this knife, but it's a little out of my price range right now. I like most of the SOGs, but they are too expensive for me.

  • @Cman524 Save up. You won't be disappointed with your sog, I haven't any way. Very light weight for the capability.

  • it says flash 1???

  • do you think this knife is strong enough for every day use around the farm?

  • Can you please re make this review with the HD cam?

  • how do you stop the back and forth play? i have quite a bit of play on mine

  • @douhnutz With the SOG assisted openers they leave a little play in order to allow for rapid deployment. Take out the pivot screw and put some blue loctite in there then tighten it to the point that it still comes out quick but has no back and forth play, easy fix

  • That SOG has a safety feature, so I won't buy it.

  • All light-duty knives should not be serrated.

  • @SuperRip7 There is a plain edge version (the one he shows) which is the one I have. Also, I wouldn't NOT buy it because of the safety lock. It NEVER has engaged without me intending to an it's out of the way. I'd say it's just a good extra feature especially if you have really young kids or something like that. It's a VERY good knife overall.

  • I picked up the SOG flash 2 in plain edge and serrated based on your recommendation. Not satisfied with the vertical movement when it is deployed. Love the weight and the sharp blade but for the same price I should have stuck with Spyderco. I don't feel secure with the wobble on this knife.

  • @glockmeister26 does this knife really have wobble ?

  • I bought a Flash 1 with the piston lock. It developed blade play vertically as well. PROS: Feather-weight. Ergonomic. Smooth, fast action. Great clip. Full flat grind. SOG agreed to repair the blade if I ship it to them :)

CONS: Developed vertical play. Lock isn't very strong (could get it to close with two hand pressure). My blade is about 1 year old.

  • This has been my EDC knife since 2006. I have the combo edge version in camo with a black blade. It is a great knife and I agree with you Nutn. The serration does seem to rip, but it is great when cutting rope or 550 cord. Great to use and great price point. Thank you for the great review.

  • I just ordered this knife and i cant wait till it comes in!!!!!

  • I love Spyderco's,but i'm thinking of getting a Flash II also.Do they hold up well over time???

  • EVERY ONE!!! SOG changed the lock on the flash so its softer on your fingers and there is grip on the bottom of the handle.

  • I want the flash 2 in green but i hate combo edge blades.

  • Which knife has the strongest steel for the cheapest price?

  • @m0derncrysis check the spyderco military. strong steel. Reputatable company and not bad in price 120 online. Only con is blade to handle ratio. But imo a big handle is good even on a small blade. More comfortable and more uses for the knife I think

  • @mark112089 I got the Spyderco Endura FFG for only 50 bucks on amazon, im pretty happy with my decision

  • @m0derncrysis good choice

  • They are truly great value knives... however they have a simple lock system and are very lightweight; I sometimes wonder if the lock would hold up in a situation where you performed a thrust cut into bone or some other solid material. Any one have a guess or experience with it?

  • I love this knife! i just got mine the other day and its great. the only problem i have is that it didn't lock up completely out of the box. I fixed the side to side blade play but there is still some up and down. Great video though, keep up the hard work.

  • Whats it going to take to get a digi camo plain edge flash 2? Come on sog, do it!

  • Awesome knife!! I had the same reservations thinking its kinda dorky and lacking the 2nd type of cool, but what it lacks in looks it makes up for in function! It's incredibly ergonomic and I love SOG's assisted opening feature. The blade shape is perfect to cover some tasks that other blade shapes can't. It's versatile and you cannot beat SOG's clips they just bury the knife. It disappears in my EDC setup. Thanks to Nutn for the info. Love what you do, keep it comin!

  • I like everything about the knife except the minor up and down blade play out of the box. I'm sure it will get worse in time so it will not be used for cutting. I think it a great, light self defense blade, and would function like the Al Mar Eagle.

  • i got one of these knives and i hate it, the knife is to think and i dont like the knive to be all the way in my poacket cuz its to hard to get out, there is blade play in mine even after i sent it in for warrenty, it would make a good camping knife but for the price i would go with a kershaw tremor ot a sypderco tenacious, ill carry the extra weight for the better knife, i really dont like this knife, if anyone wants to buy a combo edge from me though go ahead and message me

  • Just got a flash II - its awesome!!!!

  • take a look at smith and wesson SWAT sw4000gb very good love it for every carry

  • I bought the combo serrated edge because its so much better at cutting, rope, wire ties, etc. LOL......at deke441

  • my girlfriend said 3 1/2 inches ain't that big...I got the knife anyway!

  • Got the knife today! Awesome! Extremely light weight!

  • I agree--plain edge is most useful in my experience. Thanks, as always for the great reviews.

  • FLASH 2 SERRATED $39.98 @ LOWE'S... BOUT ONE YESTERDAY.

  • What would you guys recommend for me as a folding tactical knife, the Cold Steel AK-47 (new version), the SOG flash 2 plain edge, or the SOG Trident plain edge?

  • @dirkydirky757576 get a cold steel recon one t point.

  • Picked one up today(or yesterday technically, as it's after midnight) diggin' it thus far.

  • I put a drop of Tuf-Glide lubricant in both and both the Flash 1 & 2 mechanisms definitely work better. So, it turns out I don't believe they need any adjusting. However, I would still prefer to see an easier way to adjust them than with the pivot screws they come with.

  • I am not a knife expert, and just bought both flash 1 and flash 2. I am not impressed with the locking mechanism, particularly on the Flash 2. I want to be able to use the Flash 2 as an edc and emergency tactical. The blade wiggles up and down when when I hold the sides of the blade. I tried tightening it and no improvement, but then again I am not sure I am doing it right. I would prefer that it used more commonly available screws. It is possible I distorted the screw with wrong drivers.

  • @igregmart Do you have the arc-lock (axis) or the piston lock (slide bar switch, older model)? I have a Flash 1 and it does the same thing. Wiggles up and down. SOG says close the knife half way and look for debris near the stop pin. No debris here. They agreed to repair it if I sent it to them. Tightening the screw doesn't help. The newer Flashes have the arc-lock instead, hmm. Well in my tests, the piston lock is pretty weak.

  • @1dducks

It looks like and seems to act like an Arc Lock, but do not think it is an actual Arc Lock (yes it is the new Flash 2). I just do not carry it anymore because of the up down play.

  • Friggin awesome!!!! Nutn....I've had that exact knife for going on five or six years. I use it for general purpose around the house cutting boxes and opening those annoying heat sealed plastic containers. Pretty cool to see you did a review on this knife...I take your reviews into account before buying new gear and it was nice to see that you had reviewed this knife and recommended it.

  • Very good review as always! I Have this knife always in my pocket! A true companion who is always there for you! If I want a heavier artillery,i go for my Spyderco Millie.

  • What do you think is better the flash 2 or the trident? I just picked up the TF-3. and was looking at the TF SAT-8.

  • you might have just turned my into a SOG guy...thankslol

  • just picked one up today and just like nutnfancy said they made the pocket clip black and the blade has some sort of finish to it as well which is also black awesome knife cant wait to test drive it at work

  • sr im trying to make my mind up shod i go with the SOG flash 2 or the clod steel recon 1 this is going to be a every day carry

  • Whatas nutn think about the sog xray vision?

  • I'm going to assume he works for SOG now :P

    Great ideas man. +1 sub.

  • What cracks me up is you say they should make this knife in coyote brown and they did. That is awesome.

  • @outpatient83 Where have you seen it in coyote? I can't find it.

  • @snareman95 knife center

  • @outpatient83 Thanks. Found them right after I posted the question. Too bad they only come in the combo blade.

  • Well after close to 2 years my sog is still holding up great. Sure it has some blade wiggle, but meh.... imo blade wiggle is totally overrated and I have thrashed on it hard so it's not really the knife's fault. I can't see it ever failing---zytel (fiberglass nylon) is very very strong. It can be scratched sort of if you drop it on concrete or something, but literally breaking it would take a ridiculous amount of force.

  • Cool knife though I prefer their Trident's over the Flash series, I'm a bowie/clip point person. I'm totally with you concerning SOG serrations and color issues.

  • i just got this knife. only complaint is the thickness of the handle...

  • My favorite so far that i have, is my CRKT ignitor Sport knife, very light, very fast, spring assisted, when it came out of the box it as razor sharp, and i've had it for a good few months now and it is still as sharp as when i first got it.

  • which should i get this or a spyderco tenacious. i already have the persistence and i want a new blade and its between those two.

  • My favorite EDC was benchmade griptillian i was the i dont care about weight type guy but i bought this and the twitch II LOVE them,he twitchII a bit more thanks nutn

  • Lowes sells the Flash II (I've only seen combo edge, but they only had one left)

    $39.95

  • nice i went to dicks sporting goods and got my dad this 1 i never heard of sog before but its got to be good if you made a video about it

  • I'm just starting my knife collection. I mostly own fixed blades. My interest in collecting knifes comes from my late father who was a skilled knife-maker. I have a benchmade griptilian on the way, it seems to be getting all great reviews. What other folders would you recommend? I would want the SOG flash I to use as my EDC but I'm having a hard time finding anyone shipping it to Sweden. So what other lightweight assisted folders do you recommend as an EDC?

  • @blinkingLEDs Have you seen the twitch II review yet? Think it's called "Cryogenic EDC". Real fun knife. It will add some weight but boy is it fast to deploy.

  • @y2legs1sFine The twitch II looks sweet. The griptilian was on backorder so instead I got the zero tolerance 0350. The delivery guy knocked on my door this morning and when i got i the zt0350 in my hand I was pleasantly surprised that it was not as heavy as I had imagined.

  • Lost mine recently.. Im bummed.

  • i just bought one of these for my brother in the airforce

  • i have a zero tolerance 301 its big and heavy i like the sog so much better but the only reason i bought the sog is because the spring broke in the zt

  • how much do these go for? i saw one at ganger mtn for $60 and it was serrated so that stopped me from buying it lol

  • dude i thought it looked stupid to until i walked by and saw it at a gun show

  • @zanuha i know that i should get a fixed blade but should i get this to keep in my pocket or bag just in case

  • i just got this knife because of this review,, and i am soo disapointed...

the handle design is horrible, and doesnt feel good in my hand,, the index finger sticks out further than the middle finger (groove for middle finger, but not index)

mine has blade wobble, from the factory, and so does my brother's SOG 2... the jimping on the back is a complete joke...

i think the kershaw blur tanto (14c28 steel) or ontario Rat-1 are a better choice..

i will resell the knife, i hate it that much

  • i know nutn said it could be a defensive tactical then could it be good in milatary

  • @MrMacrulz

    No, get a fixed blade.

  • @nutnfancy i get my knives from bladeplay u should check it out its great

  • i get my knives from bladeplay u should check it out its great

  • Is th clip reversable (ambidextrious) ?

  • NICE KNIFE GETTIN' IT FOR CHRISTMAS YAY!!!

  • For those who dislike the safety feature, it can either be glued in place as mentioned, or if you take the knife apart it can be removed completely without any kind of problems.

  • Well, I ordered this. It's not a bad knife, but I'm not impressed with the weight. I like knives with some heft. Not so heavy that it can't be carried, but a little weight is nice. This one just is just so light that I feel like the assisted open is going to snap the thing in half, and it just feels too weightless in my hand.

  • My Flash 2 has a different lock release. And this knife seriously hard to sharpen!

  • @LedZeppelin13k7 your knife is the new flash 2 they changed the lock

  • I got the tanto combo edge then put it up for sale. I realized the tanto tip was best used for spearing, while most of my cutting is with the belly. If I get another one, it will be a plain edge, and probably the flash 1, the slightly smaller version.

Best part of this knife is the lightning fast opening, and the deep-bury pocket clip. The most annoying feature is the safety lock. The switch consistently moves to the locked position, - super annoying.

  • Just bought this one to. Should being coming with my flash 1

  • Excellent Review, lots of very useful information, probably gonna pick one up soon, Thanks for the review Nutnfancy

  • I actually kind of like hefty knives.

  • I have had my flash 2 for about 6 years and my pocket clip is broke where can I get another clip because I still love the knife.

  • I'm not an experienced knide-enthusiest, such as yourself. Having said that, I own the serrated version because that's the only style my work carries. I LOVE IT. It looks badass (which I do know means little as far as practibility) but overall it is a great blade that performs very well, and as nutn said is extremely lightweight. If money is tight and you want a great blade, get it today, once you clip it on, you'll forget it's there, it weighs nothing.

  • might get one of those

  • I have the same Flash II as reviewed in this video (no arc lock). Very satisfied with the blade as an EDC (maybe just a little too big-not heavy) ) but a word of warning on the pocket clip screws: I found they can be easily over torqued, mine is still functional but no longer "tight" as I gave a turn too many...

And yes, one of the reasons I bought this knive was this nutn review.

  • @Dronston I did the same thing to mine, I tightened It one turn to many :(

  • I love nutnfancy!!! I buy my knives based mainly on his reviews and when people come up to me and say "Hey that's a cool knife" I tell them "ehh It's nutnfancy".

  • Just got this knife, pure sex. Can't wait to stab somebody in the face with it. Half serrated is the way to go. Supposedly only cost me 11 bucks as well ordering from Amazon, but still waiting for $30 credit to show up after signing up for their card.

  • Dude you should get the camo Flash 2 and duracoat the blade! I'd love the see that

  • Is the tip stronger than the the aegis (non tanto)?

  • i just got this knife after i watched this video =DDDD

  • I recently bought the SOG Flash II, based on this review, and have been pleased with the knife. I do have one question regarding the sharpness of the blade, does the blade lose its edge quickly? After using it to cut some cardboard it lost it's edge, is that normal? And what's the best way to sharpen it?

  • well you could always duracoat the the whole knife in coyote brown customization ftw

  • This is legal to buy and carry in most states?

  • @yodayo1 in most states i would think so. its not auto, and its under 4 inch blade. unless your in cali or new york, i would think so, check with someone like a lawyer

  • @shidoink best place to ask is go to your local police station aswell, I lived in New York for 18 years and i always carried a large tactical folder + this sog flash II ever since it was out on the market, never had any legality issues :)

  • never mind about the comment of being a good self defense knife, my computer keeps shutting down and i wanted to write the comment so the computer does not shut down while i am watching the video

  • I carry this everyday, Never notice it until I need it. I have the newer version with the updated release..

  • Do you think the SOG Flash 2 if needed is a good emergency self defense knife?

  • @pupo2908 Did you even watch and listen to the review?

  • I broke the lock on this knife with my bare hands, but since its not sold as a stabbing or heavy duty knife, I'll restrain from saying it sucks. But still, the lock slide somehow malfuctioned and moved about 1/4 the way up the handle while i was closing it with two hands, and as I pushed the blade into a closed position the back plastic (which I discovered was the only thing supporting this lock) exploded, rendering the knife useless. I liked the knife, but I think it needs a lil rethinking...

  • @mattymatt54 you should contact SOG about the failure. They do have a lifetime warranty, and I have read that they have very good CS. I would be willing to bet they would fix/replace it for you.

  • Nutn you dont need to super glue the safety the disassemble it and remove the safety mechanism

  • good blade. ftat grind. good edge. handle is questionable. i can imagine breaking it clean off. I'll keep it to open my hot pockets, but further than that i go with my ESEE 4. the one in the video is different looking than mine. this one looks sturdier. i give it 6/10

  • dude ive had that knife since i was 13 or 14, the spring has slowed down now, but its a great blade hasnt broke, only thing is the safety broke, so i went out and bought its little brother the blink, highly recomended it only weighs 2.1 ounces its a great back up edc knife if your primary knife has failed

  • Picked one up @ The Blade Shop...42.00

  • I love this knife! bought it today.

  • I live and work on a dairy farm, and I can't decide between the Flash I and II, and if I would spend the money, the SOG B66-N. Does anybody have an opinion on these two pocket knives? Or should I go for the B66-N?

  • @Vdubdriver2012 get the Flash ii just because of how fast, light, and large it is. You will be using this knife everyday and this knife is tough. The one handed opening will also be great for you.

  • @Vdubdriver2012 there is a big size difference. Otherwise they are almost identical. The flash I is a pretty small knife, 2.5" blade vs 3.5" sog II. I imagine a bigger blade would be better for farm work. Also- They are almost the same price! might as well get the bigger one.

  • @Vdubdriver2012 I work on a dairy farm also i would defiantly go with atleast the flash 2 if not somthing bigger

  • this is a sog flash 1

  • My next everyday carry knife right there

  • so true about the plain edge option. i think it's way better because such a short run of seration is tough to find a use for.

  • Only thing better is another SOG, the Twitch series. I hate thumb openers.

  • Great video buddy.

  • Maybe someone can help me make up my mind. I really need a new EDC blade and am admittedly a sucker for the "second kind of cool".

I thought I wouldn't be happy unless I bought a SOG Aegis tanto for those reasons. I just can't seem to pull the trigger on a $80 knife with all the other things I really need to spend my money on.

I found out that the Flash II comes in a tanto variation and can also be found for about half the price.

Would the Flash II be a good stand in for the Aegis for me?

  • which is better, spyderco centafone, stretch, endura or sog flash II ?? hehehe

  • This one do not have the Arc Lock? I wonder if makes that much difference ? The price seems to be both (Arc Lock or not) the same... The pocket clip seems to get weak and even start waggle over time. I wonder what's up with that?

  • I got one, and loves it. I noticed the safety lock gets in my way. It came into a locked position as I slipped in and out of pocket.

  • I just got one of these bad boys and I love it. It is my favorite knife in my entire collection.

If you like this knife check out the SOG Tomcat 3.0 and Vulcan they are sexy Folding knives

  • when did you start collecting and about how many EDC folders do you think you have?

  • Just picked one up at Lowe's for $40 (combo blade). Very nice. Sweet deployment. Nice, light weight. Great pocket clip. Mine has a very slight side to side movement but I'll be tightening the screw. Can't go wrong with this one.

  • Just picked one up at Lowes for $40.

  • i have a bit of a dilemma.. which should i get the Spyderco Tenacious? or the SOG Flash II?

  • You tell SOG ~!! LOL

  • does weight really matter at all on knives that size? I mean size matters sure...but weight? I mean come on, it's not gonna slow you down, it's not gonna make your hand tired, it's not gonna pull your pants down with all the weight.

  • if you have a heavy knife the weight makes it hit harder and do more damage

  • @sandythebear yea but not a pocket folder. When you wanna slash or stab someone the power comes from your body not from that extra 2 oz. It's not gonna make you hit slower either. The difference is just so small it barely is there. The only situation I can imagine where a light knife is needed is if you wanna carry 30 of the same knife around your belt.

  • It's a matter of personal opinion; obviously. I agree with nutn. Personally, I don't like carrying a lot of thing in my pockets. When I have a cell phone, wallet, flashlight and knife (I also carry a usb stick to work) I'm happy to save a few ounces here and there; you can tell the difference.

  • I have the flash1 and just ordered the flash2 with a sog seal pup elite.

  • does this knife have a lanyard hole? reply

  • do you think a flash 1 would work?

  • would this be a nice replacement for a crkt m16 tanto

  • its all about the arc lock, ive heard the tab lock is a pain

  • Thanks for the great review man! Much appreciated - going to buy this one now (to add to my SOG collection haha)!

  • Kershaw Skyline 31" at only 2.4 oz. with flip open.

  • brown?

  • It's the best knife I've carried for the price point it's at ~$40 bucks. The steel isn't hard to sharpen. Like nutn I thought the handle was going to be odd but grew to love it. I used a piece of skateboard tape on the thumb rest area for a but more traction. I used it to baton some small branches to get a fire going at camp recently and it took the abuse well. In PA we can't carry auto knives so this was the closest thing legally available. Two thumbs up from me.

  • where'd u buy ur flash 2? reply!

  • Google.

  • @OWNmeansPWN lowes

  • @KaosX I got a couple messages/comments asking me where I got it for $40. figured I'd respond. Lowes hardware store had them.

  • @KaosX Sorry for the thumbs down dude, i accidently clicked that instead of the thumbsup.

  • Thanks for the video. I bought this knife the same day i watched this video. I love this knife.

  • Looking at this to replace a Benchmade Ambush that snapped a tip, and I can't get that model anymore (I would buy it again). This is about as close as I can get for features and price from a bigger brand. Thanks, great vid!

  • One thing I noticed was that there was an "anti-theft" device inside the handle (the knife was packaged in a "blister pack"). With the blade open, and the tip pointing away from you, look to the left side of the blade slot- the white rectangular plastic thing is what I am talking about. I was able to pry it out carefully with another knife's blade. If I were the manufacturer, I could have found a better place to hide the anti-theft device.
