There are many renditions of this wonderful Schumann work by a number of very capable virtuoso pianists, but few that really do it justice. This one is way up there. Indeed the only other that rivals it is Cherassky´s, also a live one. imho.
He did 2 editions. First one in 1837, and the next one in -52. The first one, there are triplets, and some variations are in the ending as "anhang". However, in the latest edition, the triplets are gone, and some of the Anghang-pieces are put into the original piece., so it's not Urtext's idea... if that was what u meant... :)
That's right, live 'n and a decidedly paced, individual performance. I hv this somewhere; but will refer to this (and download to harddrive for posterity) -thank you for this living presence of greatness, B2

Get Rubenstein out of the studio and this is the type of thing that could happen. Musicmaking of rapturous abandon.

This is a truly greatest performance of the Symphonic Etude. Emil Gilels must have heard him played the piece.

One fascinating thing Rubinstein does is includes the triplets from the first edition in the first variation which few pianists do.
