It's amazing how you tried everything you could to keep him alive but when my dog broke both of his back legs, we didn't want to put him through surgery (it was so bad that they would've had to take his back legs off) but we didn't want him to experience anymore pain and fright so we decided the toughest descion ever...putting him down. It happened 4 years ago and I still think of him and I love him so much still :)
@Deathenally Hi Deathenally, rabbits (being the prey animal), r very susceptible to diseases &injury (especially when they get older). The average lifespan of a rabbit is 10-12 yrs. Thus when they get closer to tt age (like us humans), they r likely to get all kinds of diseases like infections & abscesses. The most we can do as rabbit owners is to ensure tt they get a healthy balanced diet, ample exercise and physical & mental stimulation & tons of love (strokes, massages etc). =)
I wish everyone cared for their pets like you care for Spice. You're a great bunny-owner and hopefully others will try to go the extra mile when caring for their pets. I never considered owning a rabbit.... but after watching this, I'm really giving it some thought. THANK YOU!!!!! :)
@katypsu620 Thanks katypsu620. Spice was a very special bunny and friend and we still miss him so much. It really is a bit committment owning a rabbit (as he only has you to rely on for food, companionship, love etc). However, if you're in it for the long haul, the bond and friendship is indescribable. =)
i just want to ask, i want to get a realy chill and relaxed rabbit for a pet, dose it go with the personality of the rabbit, or dose it vary with male and female
@fatlizzard19 Hi fatlizzard19, the personality of the rabbit depends on the rabbit itself. There are male rabbits that are gentle and sweet and female rabbits that are boisterous and bold and male rabbits that are bold and curious and female rabbits that are shy - it all depends on their personality (like us humans!) A tip, sterilizing/ neutering your rabbit makes them less aggressive and easier to litter train.
hi. i recently got two netherland dwarf bunnies and they are a mth old today. ytd, i noticed that one of their ear started drooping down, making it floppy. the other ear is fine. whats wrong with it? it can hold it up at certain angles, but most of the time it flops down. when i touch, stroke it, it doesnt seem painful and its still eating/drinking/pooing and peeing fine. i read abt it online and it says that theres nth the vet can do. smth abt the base of the ear nt being strong enough. anyone
@CavyLoverr Hi CavyLoverr, unforuntately Spice passed away in Feb 2010. It will be his 1 year death anniversary come this 24 Feb 2011. That little bouncing bundle of sunshine will always have a special place in our hearts. =)
omg these vids are making me soooooo sad!! But at the same time, when an animal starts to suffer and theres nothing you can do its best to put them down then have them being uncomfortable everyday
Aaaawh, do you have quite the territorial bunny on your hands huh? lol. I don't blame you for not getting another rabbit .... Sugar probably prefers yourcompany anyways. If your vet ever needs advice on the beads (if you have another rabbit who may need them), I can always give her my vet's number and my vet can talk to her about it. They are working very well for my English Angora. He had several abscesses in his neck area. The beads stay in for a long period of time as they are viable.
@cleo72 Thanks cleo72, I would definitely like to try the beads out to check out its effectiveness compared to the regular injections. Will let you know when the need arises k? Thanks so much again!
Thank you for your videos. You seem like such a soft-hearted, kind lady who loves your rabbits dearly. Have you thought about getting another companion for Sugar? In the future, if Sugar or another rabbit of yours gets an abscess, there is a relatively new procedure using antibiotic impregnated beads. They have had decent results. I also noticed you were giving the antibiotic injfection subcutaneously. Usually antibiotics don't get absorbed well like that in rabbits.
@cleo72 Hi cleo72, thanks for your kind words. Sugar's coming to 9 years old now and her personality is such that she's very territorial while quite the scary-cat at the same time. The only bunny she could get along with was Spice. =( Thus, instead of getting her a rabbit companion, we're trying to give her more attention now that Spice is gone. I've not heard of antibiotic impregnated beads before, but will definitely read up more about it. Thanks so much for sharing! =)
@stephylove10 Hi stephylove10, abscess happens as a result of some sort of infection - some of which set in when ur rabbit gets older n when disease set in. Some of which r preventable though. Some ways to prevent abscess: 1) Keep your rabbit's living area clean and sanitized. 2) Keep sharp and dangerous objects away frm ur rabbit. 3) Ensure ur rabbit is on a healthy, high fibre diet. 4) If ur rabbit get scratched or hurt, bring it to e vet asap to hav e wound treated n keep the wound clean.
I know that Spices death was sad but can you continue to make videos? I love them please! And I am sorry for what happened to Spice! I am getting a rabbit soon and I will use your tips!
hey teeny a few less than 3 weeks ago i got a rabbit i notice that sometimes his eyes turn red when his natural eye colour is brown also recently in his litter tray ive noticed some orangey liquid ........ pls help :)
@skysthelimit9t6 Hi skysthelimit9t6, For red eyes, do u mean red discharge (most likely blood - a bad sign) or do u mean sometimes it looks red (like when our eyes come out red in photos)? The latter is ok, but if there is blood or any type of discharge, pls bring rabbit to vet ASAP. For orange chalky urine, it sounds as thou there is too much calcium in rabbit's diet. Do ensure tt rabbit does not eat too much pellets, veges high in calcium (like kale, kailan) n has unlimited hay n fresh water.
@MegaBonzie Hi MegaBonzie, I don't really understand what you mean by "red eye lyning shds and can't stop iching her ears". It sounds serious though. You might want to bring her to a rabbit savy vet to get her checked out ASAP. It's normal for rabbits to dig and bite as that's what rabbits do - especially if she has not been spayed (neutered).
@lilunder Hi lilunder, I'm so sorry to hear that your bunny has abscess too. It will indeed not be easy but take heart knowing with the right medication and care, it's usually much easier for younger rabbits (like yours) to recover from any illness compared with an older bunny. Hope your bunny recovers soon. Hang in there!
It's hard when any pets die, my hamster died 3 weeks ago and it was really sad but every animal grows old and dies. I hope sugar will be fine though:)
@321katt Thanks 321katt, Sugar's an amazingly resilient bunny. We try to spend more time with her so she doesn't get lonely. She's really shy and skittish though so we just sit beside her and stroke and massage her whenever she allows us to. Even though it's been more than 3 months since Spice passed away, we still miss him dearly - Sunday's are hardest for me. =(
I have 5 rabbits and one of my girls has reocurring abscess and I have to do aaaaall the same things you did for spice. I know I've cried a lot and I know it's hard to stay strong but you did a great job and Spice truly appreciated you for it. I love my rabbits and Im glad there are people like you who do as well :D
I hope the best for you and Sugar now that Spice has passed.
@stiffyzee Thanks so much for your kind words stiffyzee. Spice was an amazing rabbit - spunky, inquisitive and he always wanted to play. Most of all, he was a great companion and friend - to both Sugar and I. It's been more than a month but it's still difficult. I guess time will heal all wounds. I'm so sorry to hear that one of yours has a reocurring abscess - I can only imagine how emotionally draining it must be. Hang in there and I wish you and your bunnies all the best. =)
Thk u to all who have been following Spice's fight with abscess & for ur love & strength. Unfortunately, Spice left us on 24 Feb 10. Even though his abscesses healed really well, his tumour got bigger & some of e tumour got into his lungs. He was constantly gasping for air & it was then I knew I cldn't let him suffer anymore.
My baby Spice, thks for 8 amazing yrs & for teaching me what it means to be brave & fight on even when life throws u curve balls. I miss u buddy, see ya later pal...
thank you for sharing your experience with Spice. My rabbit is suffering from a hind leg abscess, and we are having to inject her daily with antibiotics, so I can understand how emotionally draining it can be to own an abscess bunny. My girl unfortunately will probably have this abscess for the rest of her life, so we are just making it as comfortable for her as possible... however she still has years left to live :)
How is Spice doing now? It would be great to have an update!
Thanks for ur comment coco1200. I'm sorry to hear ur rabbit is suffering frm abscess too. I am however heartened to know that there are rabbit owners like u who love their rabbits so much that they are willing to stick by them no matter wat it takes. Kudos to you.
An update on Spice: Front abscess has healed nicely. 2nd one at the side was more stubborn. As of today, there is almost no more pus, but we are still lancing e abscess just to be sure.
Thx for that video! One of mine has an abscess, too. He has an OP yesterday and the day before. Now he is at home. We have to flush his wound twice a day. I'm very happy to have my husband helping ^^
Saying, that people must not get rabbits by effect is a very good thing, imo! Thx for that, also.
Greetings und hugs from Germany ally with Mr. Lehmann, Ada und Lulu
@wackelnasentv Yes! It's great to have a supportive husband. I do too. =) My husband and I get up at 630am every morning to feed Spice, then flush the abscess and squeeze out the pus. And once before we go to bed. Sometimes when he gets fidgety (Spice), my husband and I have to sing silly songs to Spice and miraculously, he sits quietly for us to squeeze his pus!
