Can I get the chords you're using? I'm not familiar with mandolin enough to see them. I'm looking for songs like this to become more fluent in cherokee.
I am Tsilhqot'in from Central British Columbia Canada and I could not believe that the songs you are singing is so close to some of the songs that I wlas taught as a child, I still speak my language fluently and love listening to other First Nation songs.
Barry, you're truly a very blessed /talented man! Love the ways you've incorporated these white mans instruments into native songs! I've always enjoyed both native songs & singing, as well as the traditional bluegrass music & instruments! Bravo brother, splendid job. I am just north of you on Franklin Co., Virginia. Would love to talk with you sometime about many things. Would be an honor to come to the sunrise services this coming May. Creator willing, I will be there and look for you..peace
@meandmehadi Very well said and oh so true Chief Jim! Not even sure as to which bloods run through my veins. I do know however that I AM native by blood & have always felt connected to the creator / mother earth. This man playing/singing here Barry truly inspires me to want to learn more about my ancestors ways! As well as my true lineage. We have been looking for records & have came short, due to my grandmothers, grandfathers records being burned in a courthouse on Oklahoma
I don't know why but for some odd reason I always feel a connection whenever I hear the cherokee and I don't think I am even part cherokee.....why is that!!!!!
@meandmehadi Thank you so much for this comment. I've never felt I had enough in the blood to be "allowed" to learn the old songs and ways. Then I met a guy, a Pawnee, at Home Depot of all places that told me basically the same thing as you did here. With both his words and yours, I'm gonna keep on keeping the old ways alive. Wado my friend.
I'm 1/4 Cherokee,1/16 Choctaw,1/16 Apache,1/4German,1/16 Irish,1/16 Scottish,1/16English,and1/16 French ...or close to it lol but the Cherokee stands out above all born in NC ,lived in Broken Arrow OK for 10 years and now in SC and trying to learn more about my people...
Thank you, this is beautiful, makes me want to play and sing and dance along..Smile..Ya ! I am Cherokee, part white, not my fault.Ancestoers coming from S. Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Texas, Oklahoma, and me, California. Thank you Chief Jim Pell, I lost my tribe, but I hope to find it. There is such deep meaning in these songs to me.Thank you.
would you please let me know if there are chords and lyrics (for guitar) for the cherokee welcome song? If there are any, would you please tell me where i can find them? thank you.
I am cherokee but can not prove it on paper, my great grandmother changed her name and we cant connect it.... We have pictures of her and her parents on the reservation but still we are not recognized and it sadens me greatly because I love my heritage, my people.....me being who I am
My Great grandmother was full cherokee, and I am now 62 yrs old. As a child I dreamed of living with the INDIANS thats all I knew at 5, and later knew why. It was in my blood and heart. I love the music and wish i could find my people that are decended from all of her ancestors. She was in Georgia and came to Arkansas. I am CHEROKEE and proud of it.
My greatgrandmother and my grandfather were both cherokee and just wanted to say that i feel the same way as you and once im in a place were i can i hope to do some research. just thought i would thank you for saying what you think . :)

This is truly amazing :D I never got to learn a lot of the Cherokee language,I know a few words, but that is not enough for me.I try to learn each and every day(: I didn't learn the first two songs, but I know every word of The Morning Song.I do not understand why people like to be disrespectful to Native Americans. They are people just like us.I am part Cherokee and I find it very rude and hurtful for them to say harsh, crude things towards all Native Americans.
Thankyou my friend...you bring the spirituality of the Cherokee nation to those of us throughout the world who feel a connection with the red path. I will use these songs in the medicine wheel gatherings I attend here in the UK.Walk in beauty brother.

Thank you Grandfather Barry, I sang the water blessing song when the water was brought into the lodge, Next Inipi I hope to sing the Welcome song. Lena Gayle
@meandmehadi Thank you for this reply, it makes so much sense. I have been told my entire life I am "part Cherokee" and I have verified yet per the rolls. But I feel it in my blood and always have. I have read much and practice as much as I know in my daily life and am learning more (thanks to Barry for his teaching!)
It is good to see native peoples that accept "us" that maybe, as you said, have less quantity of native blood, but are pure in our spiritual paths and quests.
@chorizo the banjo is an instrument among the mountain people of whom the Eastern Woodlands people mixed with and , my friend, you can use any instruments to sing. Music is music. Enjoy it. Barry Bailey is Tsalagi (Cherokee)
Hello, I'm french and the songs are very beautiful so I'm interested by having the lyrics cause Im doing a website about the Cherokee and i wanted to sing them :)
@malicia58 The lyrics of the second song are: Wishi ta tuja, tuja, tuja, wishi ta tuja, tuja hey. Washa denaja, heya, heya, washa denaja, heya, hey. The ones of the morning song are: Own shee ma la heya ho, heya, heya, heya, own shee ma la heya ho, heya, heya, heya. I got them in a songbook:)
beautiful!..im part cherokee, i really need to learn some of my ancestors' culture. can you tell me what chords these are, so i can play them on my guitar?
"One drop of blood and you are of the people" What a beautiful perspective on life. i wish the world felt the same!! "But if wishes was horses i'd have a herd"
Ok, I am only 25% Cherokee, and even though I am very proud of that part of my heritige(no matter how small it is) and try to learn more about this part of my family's past, I am ignorant to resources I could use to learn about this culture. Thank you for the video which gives me even a tiny look at it. Also, if anyone could recomment any good online or book resources with solid info about the Cherokee, it would be much apprciated.
Sounds kinda like traditional Chinese music. Not completely, but they're sorta similar. I really appreciate that you made this video since I have Cherokee in my blood, too. However, I don't know much about my Cherokee heritage. You making this video has sorta given me a bit of self identity. Thank you!
Tradishndn I know that I have Tsalagi Blood running through my vains. My father was part Tsalagi I just don't know how much. But I do know that he tried to live by the Tsalagi beliefs. It is very hard to do that in this day and time and I find that very sad. But I would love to learn the old ways and have my family learn. And I agree with you if you can't prove it then don't claim it. I am not one that can prove it as of yet. I don't know if I ever will but I know where my hart is.
For all of you who do not connect with this man, you need to regroup and find where you lost your spirit. Being an Indian has nothing to do with blood quantum and cards. That was set up by those bent on destroying the Indian nations later down the road. Too bad you bought into it but you can turn around and do the right thing by asking that the DAWES ROLLS only be used as a RESOURCE and not a determining factor for who is and who is not Indian.
wow i dont understand how some of you hate this. because he is not playin with the traditional instruments? that is very ignorant of you guys. if i sang native songs with my guitar would you guys hate it? thats messed up. i do have native blood and i can tell he does to. but being native comes from the heart...not the blood. thank you very much for these wonderful songs. they were great :D
wow so much hate out there sometimes its just nice to listen to peaceful sounds from someone that took the time to love another culture and try their hardest to express it..its def. not authentic but its nice for him to try
This nice man singing these nice songs should not be mistaken for a person singing Cherokee songs. The third song in the series is actually based on a contemporary song made with Cherokee words in it. The other two don't have any direct relation to Cherokee culture. The problem isn't the mandolin or the harmonica -- though they're clues that the product you're getting here is not the genuine article -- a person could very well sing a Cherokee song to those instruments. But this ain't real
Respond to this video... this is amazing, im part cherokee, named redhawk, born into the wolf clan, of the tsl lagi and this guy is legit i grew up singing all those songs on the drum he is just making a folk version of traditional songs the songs are all completely legit the morning song is not a modern song with cherokee words it was actually sang by the women every morning while they would go to the river to bathe so please dont dis this guy before doing proper research
These are traditional BIA Native Americans! Ask them and they will give you their blood quantum to justify their instant credits to be wannobes. This has little of nothing to do with showing respect or pride for the tsalagi peoples. This mentality is merely a display of being the good BIA mascot, or to continue with the dilution, pollution or prostitution of of a culture or genecide; either for the glory or the gold. Certainly while never connecting or relating to the tsalagi people.
Perhaps there are some kind of "Time Life" books out there; you know.... like the volume just after bedrooms and bathrooms, and if you decide not to keep the entire set, you get to keep "How to mock the indigenous" book for free! I Dunno!
I'm with you mdt75, most of these "cherokee" songs are BS. It's no wonder everyone that wants to be NDN claims Tsalagi blood. If you realy are then learn the old way and do something to be proud of. Sorry I couldn't be more positive. Is that a traditional mandalin and harmonica???
NO WAIT.....the creater has sent me a vision of what to say.......it is BULLSHIT!!!!! WTF!!! damn crazy ass wannabe! this is a prime example of why we REAL cherokees dont teach you crazy ass white people shit!!! ya'll take and fuck it up!!!
@mdt75 : Water song? HMMMM...wow never heard a song like that before. WAit I have all the time when non-indian people want to try to be us or do something that they think is in the best form of sincerity. What people need to do is quit trying to be something they are not or if they are 1/4 or less, which most are, they need to quit making things up and this is a prime exammple of something made up! The Cherokee morning song is only sung like that by Rita Coolidge and she's made that up too.
@nathanwallacei3 Tsalagi is what the People call themselves. It was Europeans who misunderstood and penned the word Cherokee, because that's how it sounded to them. I also wanted to make note about the many people that act so mean to anyone trying to get in touch with their roots. To someone who said they are 'part' Cherokee, a Tsalagi elder laughed and said, "Which part? Arm? Leg? Many would argue and call you names, like an Oreo, or 'wannabe, but one drop of blood and you are of the People."
Wado. These songs mean a great deal to me; I am part Cherokee and trying to get my link to the Dawes rolls so I can gain my cdib and tribal membership.
@dihardtwihard123 Yeah, me too, but I'm not for sure I'm Cherokee, I might be a Choctaw... All I know is my mommy is a Native, and my daddy is a white hillbilly from Tennessee.
Could you send me the words to each of the songs?????? I'm 1/16th Cherokee and my dad is 1/8th. I think he may like to see the words to three songs that our ancestors sung.
Osiyo. Thanks for sharing the songs. I was wondering if you could tell me what the words mean in the first song? Wondered if you would also share the words in the Water Song. wado

Nativegirl1985 1 year ago
Could you send me the words to each of the songs?????? I'm 1/16th Cherokee and my dad is 1/8th. I think he may like to see the words to three songs that our ancestors sung.
