Hey Jared (or anyone else who might read this comment) I have a Pearl Masterworks drum kit, very nice. My kick drum is a 22x18, and I have the Emad3 on for the batter head as well. But I have noticed that when I press my kick pedal against the head, not necessarily even kicking, it squeaks. I tried seeding the head, and I know for a fact that my pedal is not what's squeaking. (Pearl Eliminator Demon Drive). Please help! Thanks!
I don't have a resonant drumhead, have you any tips for me to get an awesome sounding bassdrum without a resonant drumhead? I really struggle with it....
actually you can use your old drum head to make falam slams out of it, just cut out the right size, glue it to the new head and you dont have to spend extra money :P
@sharpasknives If you can tune really well you don't need to, but generally imo some muffling on the kick sounds good. If you have some cash, try the Evans emad as Jared talks about. It has a built-in muffling system. If you can't spend money, throw a pillow in your kick, and experiment with different placements.
it would help if you knew how to tighten a head... I would never clockwise tune my $4,000 dw collectors set. if you get ripples, that is why. if you screw up your head or hoops, that is why. treat your dw with respect!
I wanted to mess with my bass drum and decided to tune mine like yours, I have a new EMAD 2 over an old PS3 with 2 port holes I tuned mine as close as I could to yours and I love the sound I really get a lot of attack and punch I've always been a fan of higher tuned kicks and am use to the feel so I'll probably bring up the tension on the batter head! Thanks a lot Jared!
I would guess that the star pattern is more relevant on drums tuned with higher tension, keeping the tension in the head even, and the rim to the shell and the rods to the lugs too. The bass drum hsa nothing like the tension of, say, your snare or smaller toms so it's not as critical. I just realised that I go around my bass drum like this but opposites with the rest of my kit.
Beautiful drums and excellent vids. I like your "old school" tuning techniques and contemporary productions. I think you are thorough, teach without being condescending and are one of the best instructors, online. Props to Victor. THANKS!
After your done putting on the heads how high do you like to adjust you legs on the kick drum? I have heard if you bring the bass drum off the ground in front say 1/2-1 inch this helps resonate the head and lets the sound flow away from the ground some?
@dgarreis Bringing the bass drum up off of the ground is essential to getting a full sound on any size bass drum. Now, it doesn't really matter how much you bring it off the ground. Think of a math problem. If one kid answers 7, and another answers 9, and the answer was 6, both kids are wrong; the one who answered 7 isn't "more" right. A bass drum works the same way. The point is to have the drum off of the ground; the extent to which you do this doesn't matter.
@dgarreis The best technique I've found is to insert your hand underneath the drum, and let the spurs drop down. This will get the drum off of the ground just enough. The good thing is that it also gives the drum a better feel, as the beater is closer to the head.
Any experienced drummer who know about cymbals please answer this. What is the best kind of all around ride. I play in a heavy punk band but we also play metal. We fool around with Jazz during practice and well it is very ringing (for jazz) and doesnt have the kind of sticking definition i would like. I have a Stagg dh 22in heavy exo ride which is great for fast and loud music but for jazz its not so good. What is a good all around ride I could get that can be played live
I enjoyed how the sound at the end, I wonder what is the name of the band and the song that is playing in the background in some parts of the video, Greetings!!
@freedrumlessons He guys I have a question I'm a left hand drummer and I wanna buy a double bass pedal, but left hand drummers pedals are more expensive then right hand pedals. So now here is my question can you make a left hand pedal from a right hand pedal ??
maybe you know it I would like to know if it is possible
PS
hope you know what i mean sorry for my bad english
I have a drum set called "sonor". and the things around the bass drum where you "tune" the bass drum, they are very loose, and some og them have falled of... what should i do?
@ErlendMalvik Tighten those bitches up. and then take the ones that fell off and put them back on. Tighten about a quarter turn each lug then test before tightening more, Eventually you will find that perfect sound
I once accidently cut mysel trying to ge one of those rings in there. It felt like a paper cut. : ( Btw, why didn't you do the criss-cross formation while tightening the head? I thought was bad for the wood to do a circle.
@kelsomc10 Yes, this has been on my list for awhile, I just haven't gotten around to it. In my Bass Drum Secrets product (search Bass Drum Secrets for more info) I talk more in-depth about that, but I should get something up on here ass-well.
@kelsomc10 pedal spring tension depends on you, i like my pedals really lose, but my drum teacher likes them really hard. just try it out, you cant go wrong :p
@freedrumlessons Very good information, now I can finally tune my bass drum and toms and the snare, I saw all your tune videos, and almost all of your videos, I learned a lot from them, Thanks a lot! you and your mates made my drumming better and easier... you deserve a thumbs up on your videos. I really like your videos!
I love the sound of your kick. I got a question though. I play a lot of metal and stuff, and i would like to achieve a nice clicky sound as well as having a good thump. Normally for live performances I keep my kick thumpy and have it miced, and I also run it across my triggering system to achieve that click. It works fine, but its a hassle to mic and trigger a kit; especially when you only have like 10 or so minutes to set up. How can I tune my kick to be clicky and thumpy at the same time?
@RogueKovu I would experiment with different beaters. Try plastic or wood. Then go with a clear head as you'll get more attack. That's all I can think of right now.
@freedrumlessons thanks for the reply, much appreciated :) Right now I am using the plastic side of the stock beaters from my DW-7000's. Its much better than the felt side. Ill see what kind of beaters and heads my local shop has. Someone mentioned a 'gibraltar clickpad' Have you heard of/used this?
@RogueKovu Yeah i use vater wood beaters with a remo powerstroke, and an even retro screen on the front, and you get eveything you need. but if you want t more thump i would go with a regular old bleck reso head, i just started using kickports too, look them up, it lowers the frequency of the reso bringing out those sub frequencies drummers are starting more and more to get after.
@seamusmceagan How are wood beaters? I see them all the time but I never thought of buying them. Are they durable? I mean, all my equipment gets a beating from constantly disassembling and transporting and reassembling for shows.
@RogueKovu yeah dude, one set of wood beaters would last a life time, i've kept the same wood beaters on my axis for 7 years with no case or anything, and i'm a pretty active musician, not a scratch, the only thing separating them from brand new is ink smudge from my eq patch. but yeah man vater wood beaters are great man. they have a nice tack on the head but can still capture those lows with the right head selection. worth checking out
@RogueKovu Tune it so that it has a nice thump, then buy the Danmar PDKP Patch for your bass drum. It has a sheet of metal on the inside to give you that clicky sound
Jared you should do a video about the different woods and parts i.e Poplar or birch and how they affect sound and like the diffrent lugs for the drums
@Gigadrane I am not an expert on this sort of stuff, but in the new year (if the world doesn't end in 2012), I'll be filming a series of videos on the different woods for drums and the sound differences. Stay subbed and you'll get it!
