The decision to start this war was made in Moscow, not Tbilisi. So if Georgia had no army, it would only be easier for Russians. And Mr Saakashvili is right when he says that Georgian troops fought bravely - they inflicted heavy casualties on the forward units of Russian army, the town of Tshinvali had been in Georgian hands until August 11.
BTW almost all the weapons Georgians have are Soviet-made. Read wikipedia - educate yourself.

You know the difference between Russian action in Georgia and NATO action in Yugoslavia? We didn't bomb bridges with civic people standing on them, we didn't ruin foreign embassies, didn't use cassette bombs.
In the rest we did the same thing as NATO: protected people, those people who have no intention at all to live in the same state with those who came to kill them (Georgians).
So for us any accusation from NATO countries looks hypocritical.

You are damn right. What we did was humanitarian intervention against dictator Saakashvili. His good command of English doesn't make him democratic. He banned an independent TV channel, killed a couple of his former friends in politics, cracked down on demonstrations, killed 200 innocent civil people in Ossetia.

Sorry 10zhk but most people realize all to well this attack had nothing to do with 'protecting Russian'citizens'but had everything to do with an open attempt to bring Georgia back under Moscow control. Not much 'humanitarion'to find in that.
And, I'm sorry again, but when someone from Putin country starts talking about dictators I can't help but laugh.
I'm sure Saakashvili is no saint (no politician is) but he's largely considered a lot more "democratic" than the man from Moscow.

Sorry, I do not believe people lying about genocide and etnic cleansing. It kinda makes me very distrustful and skeptic about their real motives (but, I must say, Russia DID make those pretty clear the minute they pushed through to Tblisi)

Russia simply eliminated the military infrastructure of Georgia, which was a reasonable thing to do. We didn't drop a single bomb on Tbilisi, so keep your false allegations, imagination or whatever to yourself, as you have no proof, but guesses.

Hey, how do you come to be so mean? Of course, Russian government was lying about 2000 and stuff. But the number I gave you has been varifyed by international watch groups.
Your sympathy, as well as one of "most" people comes from lack of sources and the image of Russia, generally bad now in the West. Once again, Saakashvili is fluent in English, but not democratic. The scale of his dictatoraship is just smaller, due to the size of his country.

Russia didn't care much for "its citizens" in Chechnya. If fact it labelled the legitimate government of Chechnya as "terrorists", then proceeded to burn the whole country to the ground. Tens of thousands of people were brutally murdered by russian troops. And now they are talking about "their citizens" in Ossetia!

well so what is, that people do not believe a word you say anymore. other than that it gives a rather clear picture on what Russia's true motives were, and that, pretty much, was what turned world opinion against them.
It's not up to some guy in Mosow to decide who is president in another country, least of all of that person came to power through free and democratic elections.

Previously I told what was primary for the Russian government. But if you ask whether Russia had valid reasons to strike back, so yes we did. Killing peace-keepers of a country makes the country legitimate to interfere.
Once again, Russia is just awful at information wars, but it shouldn't disturb those who are able to see both sides of the coin.
I just wonder do you realize that it was mr. Saakashvili who attacked SO republic?

Look. Chechnya- S.Ossetia & Abkhazia. Banning TV channels, cracking down on demonstrations, assisinating people. The only probable difference is that Putin drove out foreign NPO. But in case of Georgia it would mean cutting a financial Feedback.

Because Saakashvili didn't crawl on his knees at the feet of "Big Brother". Because they tried so hard to throw him away but failed. Because he is a successful president. Because he has a huge international support, etc.
Powerful Putin (how he pictures himself) couldn't get rid of a president of Russia's former "backyard" and install his puppet instead - I can imagine how painful this is for a KGB colonel. He must be furious - and so are his supporters here.

Abkhazia and South Ossetia (which has its name Samachablo) are parts of Georgia. It is hard to be a small nation like Georgia and fight against a big power. Not a super power - because Russia does not act like one. It has a KGB run Government.

human rights watch has confirmed that ethnical cleansings of Georgians took place in part of South Ossetia, and there is no single evidence that confirms genocide of any other nation than Georgia.

- Tskhinvali: 4211 buildings = 175 destroyed + 55 severely damaged + 3981 with no visible damage. (230 affected buildings = 5.4 %)

Georgia has always been poorer than Russia, since the early 90-es, but this has started to change recently. Since Saakasvili came to power foreign investment flooded into Georgia, and the average GDP growth has been more than 9% over the last three years.
Under Saakashvili administration Georgia has been developing faster than Russia - that's one of the reasons russian president hates him.

he called a one sided size fire, after which Russian peacekeepers and their Osetian militia friends opened fire on Georgian peacekeepers while Russian tanks sneaked onto Georgian ground through the roki tunnel. It took a while for these facts to come out, but they are slowly emerging now. The world, by now is putting less and less value to the Russia tale of we only invaded Georgia to protect ourcitizens.

Two hours before the Georgian invasion to S.Ossetia Saakashvili told on TV that there he ordered not to attack Ossetia. At that time Georgian army was concentrating near Tskhinvali. Conclusion: Saakashvili is a lier and war criminal.
