Unfortunately, it's rather difficult to explain to someone who doesn't suffer from depression. I suffer from it and my cousin killed himself from it back on Halloween of '99. Despite the fact I have family and friends who deeply care for me, it's hard to ignore sometimes the loneliness you feel. People probably want to say, well, why dont you just become happy? It's not that easy, at all.
Sometimes people use happiness as a front, sometimes it's real, but it still claws at you.

At the end of the show I was so happy Matt finally got the respect he deserves and proved to Sean that he was worth it. I told myself I would finnally sleep good tonight, until I saw the ending. My face fell and I defenetly did not sleep good that night.

This episode was deceptively edited to imply that Hughes' death was the result of the tornado they were chasing. The show opens with the dedication to his memory, but no mention that his death was not storm-related. Then the editors stitched together every segment to suggest that Hughes' death-by-tornado was coming up after each commercial. It was a crass, tasteless enticement of viewers' bloodlust. If they wanted to honor his memory, they shouldn't have used his death as a suspense device.
@colipoo The episode states he suffered "a fatal injury at home". I'm not sure how you'd necessarily conclude that it was because of the tornado they were chasing, considering he wasn't even injured.
@MeanGene79 As I said before, they wait until the VERY END of the episode to explain that he died at home. At the beginning, they just say that he's dead, and that this is his "final chase." Then every commercial break is preceded by a tease that something catastrophic is about to happen. It was a clever move by the editors -- clever and tasteless.

I was just through watching season 3 of this fantastic series, I wanted a sneeky peek at season 4 and found this video, I must say, I am saddened by the loss of a great storm chaser with the ability to find a storm and head into it with no fear whatsoever, it truly is a sad feeling to me to find this video.
Rest in Peace Matt, I will not forget the contributions you made to the series and ultimately, science as a whole. Perhaps the work he did will improve the tornado warning system.

At the end of the show I was so happy Matt finally got the respect he deserves and proved to Sean that he was worth it. I told myself I would finnally sleep good tonight, until I saw the ending. My face fell and I defenetly did not sleep good that night.

@FiveCentsPlease, I was referring to the full episode on TV, not this YouTube clip. It was only at the very end of the hour-long episode that they divulged that he died at home.

This episode was deceptively edited to imply that Hughes' death was the result of the tornado they were chasing. The show opens with the dedication to his memory, but no mention that his death was not storm-related. Then the editors stitched together every segment to suggest that Hughes' death-by-tornado was coming up after each commercial. It was a crass, tasteless enticement of viewers' bloodlust. If they wanted to honor his memory, they shouldn't have used his death as a suspense device.

@colipoo The episode states he suffered "a fatal injury at home". I'm not sure how you'd necessarily conclude that it was because of the tornado they were chasing, considering he wasn't even injured.

@MeanGene79 As I said before, they wait until the VERY END of the episode to explain that he died at home. At the beginning, they just say that he's dead, and that this is his "final chase." Then every commercial break is preceded by a tease that something catastrophic is about to happen. It was a clever move by the editors -- clever and tasteless.

How can people think their life is that bad, that they need to kill themelves...
How could you be so god dam selfish, now 2 kids are going to grow up without a daddy because he couldn't man up and face his troubles; I have no sympathy for him whatsoever.
Sure he may have had depression issues, who dosn't? It makes me sick to think he found his life so bad that he needed to end it.
My condolences to his wife and children they don't deserve this.

Its so sad what happened to Matt. When watching that episode who could have known it would have been suicide. I mean they had some tense and stressful situations but he seemed so happy when they actually did use the TIV to intercept the tornado. At the begining of the episode when they said it was dedicated to the memory of Matt Huges. I thought he was going to die on that episode by a tornado related accident. In any case its very shocking news and so sad. He was a great guy. RIP

I was just through watching season 3 of this fantastic series, I wanted a sneeky peek at season 4 and found this video, I must say, I am saddened by the loss of a great storm chaser with the ability to find a storm and head into it with no fear whatsoever, it truly is a sad feeling to me to find this video.
Rest in Peace Matt, I will not forget the contributions you made to the series and ultimately, science as a whole. Perhaps the work he did will improve the tornado warning system.
