I'm 51, 185 lbs. I had my first THR in April. I was using a cane only in 4 days, off all pain meds in 7 days, driving in 9 days, played golf @ 3 weeks, Surfing in a month.
Hey, Everyone is going to be different in their recovery & their dealing with pain. If your in shape & active you'll be back up in no time. If your out of shape and lazy or a senior citizen it may take you a lot longer.
Bottom line is this is the only way to get your quality of life back.
Why get total hip replacement? When you can get hip resurfacing? Hip resurfacing has no limitation. It could last a life-time. THR last about 10 - 15 years. Then you need a new one. See a good hip resurfacing doctor.
Not everyone qualifies for this. Depending how bad or brittle your bone structure is I did not qualify at age 43 for this. Just bad genes I guess I have or I would have done that.
@jimmygrag That is what several doctors said(two OS) about my case. If they don't do hip resurfacings, they have no rights to say you don't qualified. How do they know that you don't qualify, if they (doctors) don't even do the resurfacing procedures. I got BHR ( birmingham hip resurfacing). That is why you should always go to the excellent doctors that do hip resurfacing to get opinion, not just any doctors.
I am 57 and had both done 2 1/2 yrs apart. Before the pain was so bad I used crutches for several months, I decided I couldn't walk and pain was severe, the bad joint was just wearing out and never will improve, so it was time to brave it to get it done. The last surgery cost $77k insurance took care of the bill, I paid $100 and was off work 4 mo. I felt really good on the 3rd mo. Its a wonderful surgery if you have that crippling pain.
My dad has avascular necrosis and they told him the bone on one hip is already dead and eventually he has to get a hip replacement. I'm really worried about him, he's only 49 years old. How is your mobility after? Can you still be active and do the same things? Did you feel alot better after the surgery was done? And are you still in pain? I'm just really worried because I have heard horror strories from other people.
I heard they are only good for 10 years and then you have to get another?
@washappnin hello there. ive had avascular necrosis on both hips. i have no idea what caused it though. i lost my hips at the age of 23. im one of the oldest they say with the disease. im 40 now. mine has last that long untill this year i got staph infection in one of them and had it removed im finally home from the hospital. write anytime. godbless.
@BokatorFighter the doctors guess was i caught it at a doctors office when they was giving me injections in the back and legs. staph is horrible in doctors offices especially the older ones like we have here and are not kept up to date with cleaning and so on. all i know is it was the most pain i ever felt in my entire life. they had me on 100mgs of oxycontin three times a day and 20mgs injections of morphine every four hours with lortab and percocets every two hours plus a fentanyl patch.
I haven't had a hip replacment (yet) but i have had a fractured acetabular. In surgery they put screws and plates around it. Does anyone know what this surgery is called?
that was awesome
