I have this song on cd somewhere. It's a compilation disc with other artists. This song has some of the best pedal steel on it this side of Greg Leisz on k.d. lang's great albums. Love the steel. Love the Shelby.
For those who seem to be writing Shelby off, she is still very active, performs, writes, tours....she has never viewed herself as a "country singer" and leans more to the creative artist type, working in various genres. She did a remarkable tribute album of Dusty Springfield songs, rave reviews, and several semi blues, rock, R&B albums, check out "Leavin', a great blues number, or "Your Lies", or "Jesus on a Greyhound", she really has a very broad range of creative work.
@gurlsingerfan - yep, I don't think Shelby can be pigeon holed (like Joan Armatrading) can't stuff either in a nifty genre box. She can sing authentic country though or blues, blugrass and rock as well. I think we'll be seeing Brandi Carlile in the same light a few years from now. She's about the ONLY young talent today that's as authentic as Shelby.
@tinketteful Brandi Carlile, YES. I saw her live in Louisville KY last year, fantastic and her song writing is among the best and most moving I have heard in years, so mature for such a young woman.
Sorry to say, gang, but Shelby says she doesn't wanna quit smokin' cigarettes. Sounds like she's already got brain cancer. Most every smoker WANTS to quit. She hit #23 in Billboard, 1-26-91. God bless! Wise up, Shelby. There're better ways to die, than smokin' yourself to death.
@DaveWollenberg actually she never smoked cause if she did she would have gotten wrinkles in her late 20s but however she has never smoked at all in her life and she has no wrinkles. She still looks 19 years old.
My hometown radio station gave this song a lot of airplay years ago when it was first released and I always loved it. Such simple lyrics and yet a powerful song! I'd like to see some of these talentless birdbrains on the radio today produce something this good.
I once heard George Jones He Stopped Loving Her Today was voted the greatest country song of all time, in my opinion this one ranks right next to it, they don't make em like that anymore
@uncletomthall What a voice, what a voice! But she was so young at the time, and it hadn't been long since she had watched her Dad murder her Mom, and then turn the gun on himself. I've speculated that singing heartbreaking country songs like this, and well, the inherent insanity of the country music scene just might have bee too much for her to take.
she was great as a country artist she was so on her way to being a huge star who ever her management was really did not handle her well !!!!!!!!!!this is a great song thanks for the download
yeah I wish she had of stayed "Country" too, had the chance to see her when she was MANY years ago, when this was out (my FAV SL song here...), she REALLY can belt it out I'm tellin' ya'... WOW!
@DERedhead65 She never was all country. She and her sister both have had a lot of blues in them since they started. She will still do a package show every now and then, but it's mostly for the money. I think she loves those torchey blues numbers. I like just about anything she sings...
@coleyman1 no she was never all "Country" she always had a "bluesy" voice but very POWERFUL and full. I always liked Shelby and her singing... she has some vocal cords 4 SURE! I just happen to like alot of her stuff too when she first came out in the Country arena, but some of her other stuff as well. Her voice seems very well suited to "torch singing".
@maggiesmom2007 are you kidding me? nashville tossed her out not the other way around. listen to her new cd revolution road. tell me that's not country. not radio country but real country. she is a real as real can be.
