I remember that the QB has to always hold the ball up to his ear and add the threat of the pass. It is easier and a smoother pitch from this position as well. Pull it down and cover it if he feels (or can see) pressure. I remember a great QB once faking the pass and freezing the DE. Everyone knew on a short yardage play he would not risk a turnover by pitching.

the only read a QB has to make when running the option is the outside linebacker and de
if they penetrate and seal the outside, then just hand it off to the runningback
if they crash in, pull the ball out and take off, off the tackles ass
