Admins interested in Sphinx should check out YapMap Site Search for vBulletin. It is a new type of visual search engine for discussion forums. It is fast and was build specifically for social threaded content.
@ashconnor but plugging it into vBulletin software, adding extra features and then installing it onto your servers for you involves considerable work and considering the benefits it gives you is very reasonable. If you have a tin pot forum and no money, you'll find it hard to find the money, perhaps. But if you have a thriving community, value the experience of your visitors and want the best search going, then it's absolutely 100% worth it.
@ashconnor The implementation of Sphinx is highly customised and worth every penny. To make that comment, you clearly do not understand what is involved.
Given the whole insane pricing fiasco going on with Internet Brands and vBulletin software, they might as well call this search the 'sphincter.' You guys are better off creating a search for forums other than vbulletin since it looks like this company's policies are sending customers headed for the exits in a hurry.
I agree with your analysis of IB's strangling of the software. However, the search product, now called Searchlight, will work on other forums in future versions. And anyway, we will be sticking with 3.8.3 for the foreseeable future, so we will be continuing to use it.
