This is where SerramiahmE is incorrect. This problem has nothing to do with the larynx in whole or even the vocal chords. Lurking above our vocal chords sits a valve called the epigolttis. Functioning in only one direction it keeps us from aspirating food/liquids. Otherwise invaluable, the epiglottis is responsible for a long list of problems when comes to healthy-esthetic sound production. After infantcy we loose conscious control of 95% of muscles used to affect that area.
OMG everybody calm down! Poor vocal posturing is not going to kill them and it doesn't make any of the performances/performers less amazing. First, in defense of the individual who posted the video, you certainly CAN identify poor technique by listening alone. Watch the 3 singers between 3:45 - 5 in the video with eyes closed. All human brains have perfect pitch even if we are not always aware. Singer2 tries to hit E5, her epiglottis slips causing a sudden drop in vol/pitch/quality.
Who are you to assume that these singers are singing in high larynx position when you dont even see the movements of their larynx from outside? Without touching it, without medical instrumentation it''s very hard to tell if a singer is in high or low larynx. Remember the quality of every singer's belt is different. Their tessistura varies.
To the uploader of this vid, please stop acting like a singing expert. You are making yourself look dumb. WHO ARE YOU TO TELL IF A SINGER IS USING LOW OR HIGH LARYNX BY LISTENING TO THEIR VOICES ALONE? You are judging these singers' abilities to belt not by the real position of their larynx (precisely because it's impossible to determine without proper medical instrumentation and if you are not the one singing) but by your bias.
To Staccato: Tell this to Jonalyn, if she won't stop belting every week, there's a big possibility that she'll have throat problem. Her A5 is too dangerous. It's too high that it's already dangerous for her vocal chords. Remember that Jonalyn's speaking voice is not naturally high, that's why when she belts high notes, the tendency is she'll have to force her larynx in order to reach it unlike Regine and Angeline who have natural high pitch voice. :D
To Staccato: San mu natutunan yang theory mu na Sideways singing shit. :D
Even Steven Tyler has rough and piercing voice pero ayun naman talaga ang quality, PERO di sya nagsstrgle
@staccatovibrato WOW,ngayong nag-sstruggle naman yung pinapansin mu. Was it because na-debunked na yung high larynx shit nyu? hehehe NGayon naman nag-sstruggle ang laban. Hehehe Well all singers have experienced struggling once in a while.Even si Jonalyn nag-sstruggle sya sa pag-hit ng high note nya minsan, And nakapanuod ka na ba ng mga live performances nila Aretha, Patti, Chaka Khan and MARIAH. If you'll gonna look at them most of the time ang likot nila sa stage na parang nag-SSTRUGGLE.LOL:D
NAPAKADALING unawin yun diba? and that's a fact, tama ba?
@staccatovibrato Struggle?? LOL. Sila Mariah, Patti, Chaka at Aretha pag live yang nag-peperform ang likot likto nyan sa stage, they look like nag-sstruggle sila. LOL.
kyla's vocal problem way back 2008 is normal thing for singers, meaning minamalat, but she doesn't have nodules like Mariah or her throat is bleeding like Rachelle or thee is an apparent deterioration in her voice like Sarah Geronimo.
As i said, Kyla's voice is very unique for a Filipina, kaya na-jujudge sya ng iba sa kanyang singing style and technique. The cardinal rule is, don't use the same yardstick or diva meter to her, it will lead you to false understanding and bias judgment. My advice for everyone is to ENJOY Diversity in singing, listen to other genre, to other kind of voices, black, soul, jazz, mowtown, big band, etc.
Kyla is using just the right technique in singing. Kung mali ang technique nya sa singing dapat matagal na syang nagka-throat problem and she's freaking 10 years plus na sa business, unlike Rachelle Ann Go, Sarah and I assume Jonalyn (malapit na) kapag she continues her style of belting (especially the use of whistle) sa Vox na nagka-probl;em na sa throat. Kyla knows her tone, and she knows how to use techniques to compensate for her weaknesses.
@ulrichfitsche Di naman nadeteriorate ang boses ni Rachelle, as a matter of fact, nung lumipat sya sa PP, mas nagimprove ang belting skills nya..Kay Sarah, given na yun. Kay Jonalyn naman, if minus the whistle, she can maintain her voice kasi di nmn mali technique nya, ni hindi nga sya nagsstruggle sa high notes. btw, what technique do you think she use? and what is her weakness? BELTING? I guess so. That's why when she's belting, she is obviously struggling. agree or agree?? lolz
But nagka-problem sya sa throat. Her throat is bleeding for pete's sake, that must be something, i am certain that's because of too juch streching of vocal chords due to incessant belting and wrong technique. Especially yung A5 nya and whistle, too much stress ang na-proproduce nun sa vocal chords.
One cardinal rule in music: Don't ever use the same yard stick you use when judging Regine or Jonalyn's belting power/technique to Kyla's. Because Kyla has a very unique voice for a Filipina diva. More akin to black and soul singers. Try hearing those black singers, if you'rte gonna use this school of thought, you might judge them that they're singing in high larynx (ie Aretha Franklin) when in fact they are not, what we're hearing is the natural tessitura of their voices.
Accept it guys, not all Filipino singers will sound like Regine or Dulce in high notes. Nasanay kasi tayo sa belting technique ni Regine so we're basing our judgment sa quality ng belting ng ibang singer sa kanya. When in fact, singers are all different, especially KYLA! Kyla's voice and belting is very different sa usual Filipino diva so we should not judge her quickly. LOL
Talking about Pavarroti, he'll know if he's singing in high or low larynx precisely because it's him who's singing. But for an ordinary listener like we are, it's hard, almost impossible to ever assume or judge a singer if she's singing in high or low larynx. Expert? And guys, some singers might still sound they're singing in high larynx technique even if they're not, talking about natural tone and tessitura of the voice.
@ulrichfitsche uuuhhhhmmmm as far as i know its not about the larynx another thing that affects the voice is via altering the breath pressure using the lungs as a complementary muscle that acts as the medium of flow of air to the larynx while making the proper control to the larynx makes your voice different in the case of marcelito pomoy. One things for sure try to listen to all the singers around the world from notes C5 to G5 it actually sounds the same but for A and above it varies in chest.
@ulrichfitsche I don't think that kyla does have problems with her voice since she's not belting any notes higher than G5 but for the others. . . will only see those problems to appear after 20 years or more so. But in Regines case. ITS ALL THE SAME , , , she can hit it effortless
the movement of the larynx is not about someone just making her larynx move up or down. Its about the vocal chords doing their work that appears to make the larynx being pulled up or down.
In Angelines case here. Its not a neutral belted note. More like kyla's but she's training herself to do it naturally but it is not. listen to regine's version and listen how the full note sounds being whole not losing the quality and the volume.
@muzikchesk well, angeline's tone is thinner than regine's and I don't know why people always say that angeline and regine have the same voice (and face, LOL). Angeline's voice have this heady tone when she belts and that's because of her mix voice.. It's very obvious that she uses mix voice.
For example, have you ever heard a single expert-judge (Simon, Randy Jackson, Mr. Cayabyab, Louie Ocampo, Kitchie Molina etc) in international or local music competition to ever say or talk about this high and low larynx shits? THINK AGAIN PEOPLE! Dont be fooled by youtube LOL!
@ulrichfitsche Luciano Pavarotti is an Italian operatic tenor, who also crossed over into popular music, eventually becoming one of the most commercially successful tenors of all time. He made numerous recordings of complete operas and individual arias, and established himself as one of the finest tenors of the 20th century.
These "head facing forward, low larynx or high larynx" school of thought of music are all SHIT! Dont be FOOLED by these people who talk like an expert but doesn't really understand what are they saying. No one cannot be sure what's happening behind your larynx, epilogtis while singing more so belting especially without proper medical instrument to do it. All these low larynx or high larynx is all unfounded, unscientific observation coupled with bias.
@ulrichfitsche well I guess that school of thought about music coming from Pavarotti is better than to be an ignorant fool who does'n't believe in anything. . . Moreover. . its an evident fact that wrong vocal use can lead to vocal nodules and callous formation in the vocal chords that causes damage or worst lose the ability to sing. Which is also evident to celine dion's case hehehehehe
@muzikchesk like Mariah's case. And i thought, westvoice, the proponent of this school of thought here in youtube is an avid Mariah fan, and she's praising Mariah to have this great, neutral larynx technique shit, so look at her! circa 1998 onwards, look at her vocals, it has deteriorated, her larynx accumulated nodules, is that the benefit of having a great neutral singing technique shit?
@ulrichfitsche well. . . Mariah's voice did not have problems in singing. . .her damage was due to over consumption of heavy liquor and smoking. . .Westvoice is glorifying mariah in her prime but i really don't think that westvoice is heavily biased to other singers LOL. others might have issues in listening. as of Kyla I do think she had problems before. Regine only had vocal problems due to having series of concerts outside the country while taping diva.
@muzikchesk Does Kyla have nodules in her laryx like that of Mariah Carey, in which West Voice assumed and praised to have the best singing technique in the world- the neutral larynx shit. Does she have throat problems like Sarah Geronimo, Rachelle Ann go and Regine (before). If Kyla's using the wrtong technique dapat sana matagal na syang nagkaproblem sa voice nya, but alas, nada! Is it because she's using the wrong or the right technique? Kunting common sense guys :D
@ulrichfitsche I thought your an avid fan of kyla I guess i'm wrong. . . Way back 2008 she had problems with singing and was relieved by drinking glutathione. . . moreover rachelle ann and kyla I think has the same qualities of vocal technique however rachelle hits higher notes such as G#5 and A5 compared to the notes that kyla can hit. I can't compare kyla to other black american singers since most of them are queens of hitting notes which kyla can't unlike regine she does it effortless :)
You really cannot say that a singer is singing in high larynx or neutral laryx unless you're the singer or you are their vocal coaches. You're judging the singers on these videos based on the texture, range, power and quality of their voices, that's all you need to assess in order to make sense not by these high or low larynx shits.
@ulrichfitsche The epiglottis is located below the larynx. If you swallow, the epiglottis will cover your larynx (including the air pipe) so that food and water doesn't go down into your lungs but in your esophagus instead. So if you sing with a high position, the epiglottis will cover your larynx creating a choking sound like Kyla does.
One cannot say that a singer is singing in a high larynx voice by just merely listening to her voice, sometimes a singer is singing in a neutral larynx position but the quality of the sound that is produced sounds like high larynx. In the end it's the question of quality. Black Singers normally have that.Look at Leona Lewis,Fantasia Barrino, Chaka Khan, Patti Labelle, people may think that they are singing in high larynx but actually it's just the natural quality of their voices.
@ulrichfitsche Chaka Khan, Patti Labelle, Fantasia Barrino are mix voice users and that will make their larynx in its relaxed position... They sing with too much chest tone than the head tone that's why they sound scratchy like rock singers... Leona Lewis have this great nasality.
And don't you really think guys that Kyla doesnt know how to use proper singing techniques, my gosh Kyla's voice wont survive this long if she is not using proper singing technique. In fact Kyla is very well known in her mastery to use different singing techniques in order to compensate for some of her weaknesses. For example, she may not be the best in belting technique but she's the best in using headtone, in using her vibratto, in using melissmas, riff and runs and shifting from head to chest.
@ulrichfitsche True... Ang pansin ko lang kay Kyla, this is just my observation, madalas nyang iniipit yung leeg nya kapag high notes, hindi relaxed, that's why you can actually say that she is struggling, best example yung sa Love on Top nya and Through the Rain. You know, most of our singers do sing with their head facing forward.
@staccatovibrato absurd. How can exactly one can "ipit" her neck especially without using her hand, does kyla has exceptional muscle control in her neck to do that? LOL
@ulrichfitsche I'm sorry if my comment made you irritated or what. :)
@staccatovibrato Obviously, you're a Jonalyn fanatic who use this school of thought in music to show that Jonalyn is a better singer than Kyla. LOL As i said, Kyla's voice is very unique for a Filipina diva kaya normal lang na ma-judge sya ng tao sa style and singing technique nya, hindio kasi sya tulad ni Regine na high pitch at napaka-taas ng boses or si Jonalyn or si Charice na mala-dulce ang voice quality. And the cardinal rule is, don't use the same yardstick to Kyla.
LOL.
@ulrichfitsche Kyla survived the industry because of the 2 reasons, people who love her and the people who are not that inclined to music. The Philippines have a small amount of attention to music as a profession because this country doesn't have enough opportunities comparing to other countries, they have their own school for music. I don't hate Kyla, i love her head voice, vibrato and specially her riff and runs but I just don't like her belting technique.
@SerramiahmE "small amount of attention to music as a profession "- wow, how can you say that in a country where in every corner there is not one but many aspiring "professional singers". Oxymoron.
"they have their own school for music"=exactly. exactly! you're observation is based on the philippine school of thought of belting with big, thick and high notes like Charice etcTry to listen to some black belters and broaden you're horizons. And to rock singers as well, with throaty, screech belt
@ulrichfitsche 80% of this country where in every corner there is not one but many aspiring professional singers are joining singing competitions without any professional trainings.
wag kayo masyado maniniwala dyan sa high larynx positioning theory na yan. first we really can't be sure if the larynx is high or low, up or down just by looking or hearing a singer's voice. Remember people have different physiology and pathology. Unless they have proper medical instrumentation or they are touching the adams apple of a person, dun lang nila malalaman kung high or low ang larynx.
@meccaress but not all singer can use it like regine and some other diva do ,man voice is naturally low so it easier to use mix voice unlike women so it's something that shouldnt be a shame of
Kyla and sarah are more than just belters, they have their own genres. I'm not a big fan of their high notes as well, but Kyla sounds best from low to midrange singing. She got that unique raspy/airy sound, not to mention her riffs and runs. Sarah excels on upbeat fast tempo songs. Give the belting to the belters, Kyla is RnB, Sarah is pop. But all of them are Filipino pride! We should be proud of all these singers.
kyla needs more air..she only needs to learn the breathing control, she has a good and high voice too..
jonalyn and regine..no doubt..:) the best ever..
angeline, she has a future.:) welcome to the industry..
sarah sucks...but i think if she will be trained of using the right technique, she will belt effortlessly.. she wouldnt need to dance anymore just to prove that she can impress..
all great in belting -- except kyla and sarah,, maybe because theres a right note for them which they really comfortable and easily hit ... but they are great in mid-register i guess.. that their advantage among other young singers
With instruction from one of the few educated vocal teachers aware of this you can regain complete control over your voice.

I can't compare kyla to other black american singers since most of them are queens of hitting notes which kyla can't unlike regine she does it effortless :)
muzikchesk 2 months ago
@muzikchesk but most black singers sound like pitchy screechy and high larynx like aretha franklin,, chaka khan if you'll listen carefully.

I'm sorry but I don't believe this video.
iegorulez 2 months ago
@iegorulez why? is it because of Kyla?
SerramiahmE 2 months ago

SerramiahmE 2 months ago
One cannot say that a singer is singing in a high larynx voice by just merely listening to her voice, sometimes a singer is singing in a neutral larynx position but the quality of the sound that is produced sounds like high larynx. In the end it's the question of quality. Black Singers normally have that.Look at Leona Lewis,Fantasia Barrino, Chaka Khan, Patti Labelle, people may think that they are singing in high larynx but actually it's just the natural quality of their voices.
ulrichfitsche 2 months ago
@ulrichfitsche Chaka Khan, Patti Labelle, Fantasia Barrino are mix voice users and that will make their larynx in its relaxed position... They sing with too much chest tone than the head tone that's why they sound scratchy like rock singers... Leona Lewis have this great nasality.
SerramiahmE 2 months ago
And don't you really think guys that Kyla doesnt know how to use proper singing techniques, my gosh Kyla's voice wont survive this long if she is not using proper singing technique. In fact Kyla is very well known in her mastery to use different singing techniques in order to compensate for some of her weaknesses. For example, she may not be the best in belting technique but she's the best in using headtone, in using her vibratto, in using melissmas, riff and runs and shifting from head to chest.
ulrichfitsche 2 months ago
@ulrichfitsche True... Ang pansin ko lang kay Kyla, this is just my observation, madalas nyang iniipit yung leeg nya kapag high notes, hindi relaxed, that's why you can actually say that she is struggling, best example yung sa Love on Top nya and Through the Rain. You know, most of our singers do sing with their head facing forward.
staccatovibrato 2 months ago
@staccatovibrato absurd. How can exactly one can "ipit" her neck especially without using her hand, does kyla has exceptional muscle control in her neck to do that? LOL
ulrichfitsche 2 months ago
@ulrichfitsche I'm sorry if my comment made you irritated or what. :)

@staccatovibrato may tama kah... :)
SerramiahmE 2 months ago
@staccatovibrato Obviously, you're a Jonalyn fanatic who use this school of thought in music to show that Jonalyn is a better singer than Kyla. LOL As i said, Kyla's voice is very unique for a Filipina diva kaya normal lang na ma-judge sya ng tao sa style and singing technique nya, hindio kasi sya tulad ni Regine na high pitch at napaka-taas ng boses or si Jonalyn or si Charice na mala-dulce ang voice quality. And the cardinal rule is, don't use the same yardstick to Kyla.
ulrichfitsche 2 months ago

SerramiahmE 2 months ago
@SerramiahmE "small amount of attention to music as a profession "- wow, how can you say that in a country where in every corner there is not one but many aspiring "professional singers". Oxymoron.
"they have their own school for music"=exactly. exactly! you're observation is based on the philippine school of thought of belting with big, thick and high notes like Charice etcTry to listen to some black belters and broaden you're horizons. And to rock singers as well, with throaty, screech belt
ulrichfitsche 2 months ago
@ulrichfitsche 80% of this country where in every corner there is not one but many aspiring professional singers are joining singing competitions without any professional trainings.
SerramiahmE 2 months ago
wag kayo masyado maniniwala dyan sa high larynx positioning theory na yan. first we really can't be sure if the larynx is high or low, up or down just by looking or hearing a singer's voice. Remember people have different physiology and pathology. Unless they have proper medical instrumentation or they are touching the adams apple of a person, dun lang nila malalaman kung high or low ang larynx.

MIX VOICE is not authentic, it's fake. it's nothing a female singer could be proud of. Men can also do that, mostly gays, without a single effort.
meccaress 2 months ago
@meccaress they(mix voice users)are faking their voice and that explains how they can hit high notes easily..
SerramiahmE 2 months ago
@meccaress but not all singer can use it like regine and some other diva do ,man voice is naturally low so it easier to use mix voice unlike women so it's something that shouldnt be a shame of
EVERMUSICLOVER4 2 months ago
Kyla and sarah are more than just belters, they have their own genres. I'm not a big fan of their high notes as well, but Kyla sounds best from low to midrange singing. She got that unique raspy/airy sound, not to mention her riffs and runs. Sarah excels on upbeat fast tempo songs. Give the belting to the belters, Kyla is RnB, Sarah is pop. But all of them are Filipino pride! We should be proud of all these singers.

go for regine and jonalyn
prozerfina 2 months ago
kyla needs more air..she only needs to learn the breathing control, she has a good and high voice too..
jonalyn and regine..no doubt..:) the best ever..
angeline, she has a future.:) welcome to the industry..
sarah sucks...but i think if she will be trained of using the right technique, she will belt effortlessly.. she wouldnt need to dance anymore just to prove that she can impress..
rheylorbeth 2 months ago
charice pull her larynx down to create a fat voice when she sings big songs.
there were times she doesn't.
angeline quinto has a neutral placement of larynx, not chesty as the other belters though.
jonalyn and regine has the best belting and placement.

@JVHighNoteChannel angeline uses mix voice that's why her tone is heady..

all great in belting -- except kyla and sarah,, maybe because theres a right note for them which they really comfortable and easily hit ... but they are great in mid-register i guess.. that their advantage among other young singers
