Fail safe... Fukushima was also supposed to be failsafe. Of course, all the Nuclear faclities in France are faisafe. Even our borders are failsafe!... (Or so says our Govt).
Yeah, let's trust our govt officials and nucleocrats...
@DivineTurtle96 Waste??? I hardly think so... I cerainly need to know that the containers handling nuclear waste to Yukka Mountain, N.M. and various other facilities around the US are absolutely FAIL SAFE - 100%. I'd say this is a very small price to pay in the grand scheme of things... Don't be so short sighted.
@alnilam66 No, they didn't. What would have been the point? The fire came from fuel splashed from a split tank onto the hot engine and spilling from the fuel pump, which was in the equipment bay that flew out, along with the generator. Sparks from the generator and traction motors ignited the resulting fine mist of fuel.
It would have been so cool to stand behind that wall... People have jumped trains on motorcycles,, but have you ever had a train jump you?? Aah ha ha ha ha
@fattymcfatfatism That "wall" was an overturned low-loader wagon, supposed to have been carrying the flask. Walls are not usually built across a railway track, and they don't usually have buffers, couplings and (detached) wheels! Also, the wagon was shunted a couple of hundred feet down the track by the impact, ending up partially on top of a coach.

obviously fake....notice how all the passengers get off the train before it crashes into the block. If it were a real accident, they wouldn't have got off....also....why was it being filmed like this? Obviously this was PLANNED!
@sooper2dooper3 Did you really not read the captions telling you, as if anyone with a brain needed telling, that it was a CRASH TEST of the nuclear flask? Did you really not notice that the train all the passengers got off (before they went to sit in the stands to watch the test) was newer (smaller one-piece windows, air conditioned) and much longer than the one that ran into the flask? You have a strange definition of "fake"!
@Darmock59 The aim was to try to dislodge the lid, and the loco's drawhook hit in the right place to do that, if possible. This was all about demonstrating the safety of transporting the flasks by rail; terrorism was a separate matter, and the UK didn't face terrorists with shaped charges in 1984.
@LegoMovieMan44 How so? Why use a nuclear container, of all things, as an obstacle instead of a block of concrete or something? The title is ambiguous and inaccurate (nothing is indestructible, and it was never claimed for the flask) but it's obviously a test of the crash resistance of a dangerous cargo container on a derailed low-loader wagon.
@Rocket1981 Not in 1984. Terrorism was effectively limited to the IRA, who were not suicidal; an accident while being transported by rail was far more likely.
@Rocket1981 Back when they tested it, the most prominent terrorist threat was the IRA... and the IRA didn't target anything nuclear. Post-11/9 and post-7/7, perhaps an IED-type scenario would be tested.
@Rocket1981 It's not so much about the scenario of a train hitting the container, it's to demonstrate that the container is so durable, that not even a speeding train can cause damage to it.
@crazynoobboy No, they TRANSPORT them by rail. Didn't you notice the container was on an overturned low-loader wagon? Don't you care whether or not one would leak radioactive material if involved in a railway accident?
@casnick1Just in case you're not joking: at the time of the crash, he was nearly nine miles away and eating the packed lunch provided, having opened an external valve to send the train on its way.
@casnick1 ... He was taken out James Bond style through the roof... just before the crash! Ha ha! ... Didn't you see the rope ladder and helicopter a few seconds before impact?!
@tenfiveracer No. But then nothing will, and the flask is carried by rail, not space shuttle. They just wanted to prove it wouldn't leak in a serious train crash.
@wampaAWESOMEsauce The person at the controls of a train is known as an Engineer ONLY in North America. Everywhere else in the English-speaking world, the job title is Driver, except in some parts of Australasia where the term Train Operator has been adopted.

Excellent illustration of the extreme test needed to show a container as meeting specifications. In this case, the nuclear container should be able to survive anything short of a direct hit with a specified amount of high explosives, and likely it passed---the container survived the train that struck it.

@squirlybmx Your argument would be valid on 99% of the comments on Youtube. Personally I found his grammar to be among the remaining 1%. He used possessive forms and even commas correctly. As for the mistake he made, he clearly just changed his sentence structure in mid-sentence and made an error in the process. I'm sure that's happened to you. Oh and English is not my native language, so any mistakes in this are to be expected, or at least that's how I rationalize my lack of proper grammar.

@Phatency Thank you. I just noticed it. I was not being sarcastic; I have residual stroke symptoms and a visual problem which runs letters together, and I am awaiting an eye operation which I hope will correct it.
@Phatency I know that my statement regarded 1% of his comment and that was my point. Most videos of this type are often quickly viewed by the audience by skipping to the action part. I skipped to the explosion, like a lot of people do.
@squirlybmx There was no explosion. The locomotive collided with the flask on its "derailed" low-loader and broke up, scattering fuel onto the hot engine, where it was ignited briefly by sparks from the departing generator. Isn't it more interesting (and less embarrassing) if you learn exactly what is happening and why?
@squirlybmx What do you think exploded? Parts were torn asunder by their own kinetic energy, and free fuel burned in open air. The fire contributed nothing to the break-up.
@squirlybmx Explain how, in your opinion, the fuel tank came to explode, i.e. burst owing to pressure from inside, rather than be crushed and split open by heavy machinery breaking up around it. If you can't, or won't try, it's a case of troll fail.
My brother Markus Bott had been tortured during 5.5 years by the German BND,the former GESTAPO.I recorded more than 100 videotapes which ended up in the legal system. My brother was tortured 1.5 years while several legal procedures pending. He was assassinated on July 11th 2009 because of our homepage and our book Der Totalitäre Staat. If my homepage disappears, the BND will have assassinated me as well.BND snitchers are thumbing me down
So thumbs up if you want the BND to stop torturing my parents
@SchezS It tells you on screen between 0:07 and 0:17. Actually, the CEGB never claimed the flasks were indestructible (what is?), just that one wouldn't leak if involved in a heavy train crash.
@productiveproductons It was well padded, but it does seem to have stopped on impact, so it may have been damaged. Nothing actually exploded; some fuel splashed on the hot engine and caught fire for a few seconds.

"When I use a word," Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, "it means just what I choose it to mean -- neither more nor less."
"The question is," said Alice, "whether you can make words mean so many different things."
"The question is," said Humpty Dumpty, "which is to be master - - that's all."

If my homepage disappears, the BND will have assassinated me as well.BND snitchers are thumbing me down
So thumbs up if you want the BND to stop torturing my parents

who's indestructibility? train or container?
SchezS 6 months ago
@SchezS It tells you on screen between 0:07 and 0:17. Actually, the CEGB never claimed the flasks were indestructible (what is?), just that one wouldn't leak if involved in a heavy train crash.

how did the camera in the train not blow up?
productiveproductons 6 months ago
@productiveproductons It was well padded, but it does seem to have stopped on impact, so it may have been damaged. Nothing actually exploded; some fuel splashed on the hot engine and caught fire for a few seconds.
